They really did a good job. They were very reliable. I called on Saturday morning and someone called me right back. They were very easy to work with. The man that came out and gave the estimate was delightful.

I was recommended to Jewell Roofing by a local subcontractor that I have worked with in the past who has always provided exceptional work for me and my family. I have just recently purchased my house, and after discovering a mold problem in one of the walls, was able to trace the leak back to a corner of my chimney, which did not have any flashing installed on it to divert rainwater. After diagnosing the problem myself, I needed someone to repair the leak by installing this flashing for me. Normally, I would do such things myself, but roof repair on a metal roof in the middle of summer is a treacherous task, much less in late fall/early winter. Since my normal handyman was unable to do it due to scheduling conflicts, I went with his recommendation and called Jewell Roofing. The repairman, Glen Morgan, was very helpful, and came out for an estimate on the first day that appear to be safe enough to get on the roof; in actuality, I was expecting him to cancel and reschedule due to the weather conditions, but Mr. Morgan braved the elements and climbed up to take measurements of the chimney anyway. He was very good at explaining what needed to be done, how long it would take, and provided me a written estimate of the cost. I agreed to the work, which began a few days later (4-5), as the weather had been horrible for the past few weeks and had backed up most of the work they had already taken on. When Mr. Morgan arrived, he installed the flashing in a matter of two or so hours; he was very courteous, cleaned up all refuse, and did not require me to babysit him for the install. At the end, he appologized to me and said he wasn't able to complete the work that day, and would likely have to return on Saturday, due to a mismeasured piece that had to be custom made for the install. An understandable mistake, I told him this was acceptable, and he left for the day. As I was leaving for work the next morning, Mr. Morgan was pulling into my driveway. He said that they were able to make the piece earlier than he anticipated, so he had left early that morning to finish the job that he had started earlier. I thanked him for putting in the extra effort, and the repair was made while I was at work that day. I am happy with the work provided, and the repairs seem to have stopped the leak for good, allowing me to continue my repairs. I was unaware of prior comments left on this company via this site before today, so I am unsure as to what might have been different with my case this time. Regardless, based solely on my experiences, I would hire the company again to do roof repairs for me in the future. My sole complaint was that the price quoted for the work ($625) was a bit higher than my subcontractor had indicated it might run. However, since I took no other bids and did not shop around, I only downgraded the price grade to a B.
Description of Work: Installed proper flashing & counterflashing on chimney, involving a metal roof.

After installation, a small leak developed in the bonus roof, damaging ceiling drywall. Contact Jewell and repairman came out. Said it was the flashing around the chimney and had been repaired. I volunteered to repair drywall stain on ceiling. On 9/5/11 @ 10pm, I discovered water in the corner of the bonus room, wet carpet, and drenched drywall. I called the repairman and left 2 voice messages, with no immediate reply. I then left a voice mail at the number on the Jewell web site, which advertises 24/7 emergency roofing. I received no response until the following morning. The following morning I received a call that they were going to send someone out. On the first trip, the two repairmen could not find the leak (it was coming a downpour outside). They informed me they would have to tarp and wait for drier weather to find the leak and left. The leak was still occurring and, if anything, was worse. I called Jewell back and asked them to send someone back. I also requested drywall be torn down to allow for drying. There was no response for a couple of hours, so I called back and asked for Mr. Jewell. All of his local advertisements portray him as a local owned, company business which prides itself on service and has been in business for 30+ years. I was informed Mr. Jewell was out of office. I asked them to have him contact me or my attorney would be in touch. Mr. Jewell called and I explained the situation to him. He told me the original repair team would be headed back over to tarp more and remove drywall, which they did. Jewell's repairman also contacted me to discuss the repair and drywall tear-out. I also point out the leak on the foyer ceiling to the repair team. They contended it was the wind blowing rain in a mortar crack. The Jewell repairman stops by in the evening to look at the job so he can speak with Mr. Jewell concerning repair. We agree it needs several days to dry and that I would test for mold before we began repairs. We also agreed we needed to make sure leak was resolved before repairing. On 9/7/11, I have independent contractor examine the area outside the house, draw a diagram of the construction and said it would not have been a result of the mortar crack and wind, based on the construction. On 9/9/11, a team from Jewell come to water test the house and inform me it is mortar holes in the chimney causing the leaks and not a roofing issue or responsibility. When asked about the foyer leak, they said there was an area that might be suspect and they would seal it. On 9/12/11, I receive a call from the Jewell sales rep informing me he will be point person for Jewell. I confirm the plan to have chimney examination by Ashbusters and will call him back with results. He asks if he can join us and I decline, telling him I wanted to speak with Ashbusters and may have my attorney present. On 9/13/11, I have Ashbusters examine chimney, and they report there are some areas where mortar has eroded. Also points out there are some areas that appear to be new and have "clean" lines, with no erosion. One of these is an area Jewell contends was the leak. Ashbusters didn't understand how this was missed when the flashing was repaired, due to its close proximity. On 9/14/11, I call Jewell sales rep and inform him of Ashbuster's findings and that we were scheduled to have it repaired in the afternoon. Later that day, Ashbusters comes and tuckpoints mortar joints on chimney and waterseals. That evening, we have more rain and 3 leaks are observed. On 9/15/11, I send an email to the Jewell sales rep. I later call and confirm he has received email and informed me Jewell would be contacting me to schedule repairs. I expressed my frustration with the repair work, the amount of lost time from work due to this. Later in the date, Jewell schedules repair for Monday 9/19 between 1 and 2 pm. On 9/19/11, Jewell team tarps the roof. Said it appeared there were a few nail holes. Will be back on 9/20/11 around 5pm to reroof area with holes and perform water test. Once again expressed my displeasure and the lack of urgency/priority I had been given. Mentioned I had not spoken with Mr. Jewell and I felt that he should have called, given his "service" attitude. On 9/20/11, I received a call from Mr. Jewell at lunchtime. Said he heard I wasn't happy that he hadn't called me to follow up. I told him that I thought he prided himself on service and given the issues I had experienced, I thought I would hear from him. I also told him that waiting over the weekend for them to come back did not seem like service. His response was that he had people working on it and didn't feel the need to call. Somewhat ambivalent to the whole thing. I thanked him for calling. Later in the day, Jewell team came onsite and water tested. Said the problem was still with the chimney and about 1 1/2 feet up the chimney is where the water began coming in. I explained to him on the phone that there were 3 holes I had circled on the underside of the seating where the leaks were. He was emphatic that the water was coming in the chimney and running down to the holes in the sheeting from the old roof. He contends there are no holes in the roofing where it could be leaking. He was going to send me the photos they tool of the chimney areas that need work so I could get them to Ashbusters. He said he would send them 9/21/11 in the morning when he got into the office. On 9/21/11 @ 11:15AM Ashbusters has called multiple times awaiting photos. Called Jewell Roofing and gave them my email address and asked her to follow up with the repair tech, as I was supposed to have the photos first thing this morning. I also told her my chimney masons were waiting on the photos. She was to check with tech and get me the photos ASAP. At 2:25PM, I still haven't received photos. Called Jewell back. They checked and came back on line, asking me to hold for Lori (Mr. Jewell's wife). After holding for several minutes, Gloria came back on the line and told me Lori was still on the other line and could she have her call me back. Gave her my office direct line. At 2:57PM, I received email with photos from Gloria. They were in email format, so I had to copy each one individually into the email, but got them to Ashbusters, who performed additional work on chimney. On 9/2711, I emailed Jewell, asking them to come perform a water test on both the area and the entire roof. On 10/7/11, the Jewell team and Ashbusters came onsite for the water test. The water test showed no leaks. Ashbusters felt the chimney brick on the roof decking cracked due to the heat of the summer and it needs to be reinforced/supported. Ashbusters recommended Vintage Construction as they had done jobs like this previously for Ashbusters. Additionally, the Jewell sales rep recommended a file a homeowners claim for the waster damage. On 10/10/11, Vintage Construction examined the area. He did no see any deflections in the 11/16 OSB roof decking and felt no bracing was necessary, but could be done as a precautionary step when the repair was done. I also spoke with my insurance agent regarding the damage. My agent felt the claims adjuster would certainly pay the claim, less the deductible, but my rate would also increase in subsequent years. After hearing the story, he felt that their claims would seek litigation to get their money back from Jewell. On 10/11/11, I spoke with Jewell sales rep and offered to split the bill in half with them. He advised they had a meeting on 10/12/11 and he would discuss with Mr. Jewell what he wanted to do. Assured me he would be in touch by end of week. On 10/24/11, I called Jewell sales rep back and left message that he hadn't called back. Advised that I needed an answer by end of day on 10/25/11 or I would assume they had declined the offer and wanted to pursue litigation. On 10/25/11, Jewell sales rep called and said Mr. Jewell had spoken with Ashbusters and Mr. Sharp from Vintage Construction and felt he had done all he needed to do and he would not be doing anything else. I informed Gary they needed to replace the shingles with holes in them that had been siliconed and he said he would contact the roofing tech to get it done as soon as possible. Thanked him for returning my call. Bottom line - House is 11 years old. Had no leaks until new roof was installed. Roofer refuses to take any responsibility for damage, misses the cause/repair on the first call out, which, if found, could have eliminated damage to bonus room. Roofer blames the problem on normal roof wear and tear, does NOT have 24/7 on-call emergency roofing as advertised on their website. Advertises to be a local, family owned company priding themselves on service for 30+ years. This was certainly NOT what I experienced. Refused offer to split repair. I have taken offer off the table and will likely be seeking damages, as well as repair reimbursement. Have filed complaint with BBB. Will be sending letter to local radio station where roofer advertises their service. Consulting with attorney to move forward with litigation.
Description of Work: Tear off and replacement of existing roof, decking replaced where necessary.

Description of Work: I contacted Jewell for repair work on my roof on more than one occasion. On one occasion, one of their representatives, Glen Morgan, did show and was very professional. He gave me a very fair assessment. That said, on other occasions, I couldn't get the receptionist to have anyone come to my home. On more than one occasion, she promised to call me back to schedule a time, but never did. I finally gave up and and going to a different roofer. By the way, I have also informed them several times that a bad phone number is posted to their web site. I guess they just don't care.
