Monticello Custom Homes has failed to complete the work he was contracted to do and some of the work they did complete is already needing repair. I contracted with Monticello Custom Homes, in December of 2016, to add an outdoor living space and garage to my home. Initially, Brian(Owner) was very engaged and responsive. So much so that I even coordinated intros/referrals to a number of friends and family members that were considering similar projects. As the project went on, progress slowed drastically and the quality of the work declined. I have been contacting him every week for the last 2-3 months to remind him there was still work to be done and other work of his that already needed to be repaired. After many excuses for the delay and missed commitments about when it would be fixed, he has now gone completely non-responsive. The stone fire pit they built is no longer draining. Due to the fire pit having a foot of standing water in it, even days after a small rain, I am unable to use it and barely able to use the patio since the fire pit has become a hot bed for mosquitos. There are also stones falling off of the wall he built around the pit. To make the mosquito issue worse, the door on the screened-in porch he built is warped and not closing or locking properly. Again, I have been reminding him of this for many months now. Also, he committed to re-sealing and re-staining the stamped concrete patio at the close of the project. This was necessary because his crew completed the initial stain very early in the project and it had worn off from the many months of them using it as a work area for the other parts of the build. Still no movement on that issue either. Lastly, the final inspection is still not complete. I will be fling suit and reporting this issue to all relevant entities.

Response from Monticello Custom Homes
We are disappointed to hear this response when we felt we gave this client an incredible addition to his home. The homeowner wanted to do his own grading to the yard for the sod he was installing himself. The fire pit was working fine and past all code inspections before he did his own yard work. We did come back out there after the project was completed to view the leak on the fire pit. The owner was instructed how to fix it and was told it was due to his grading of the yard had covered up the drain pipe. In which, him covering up the drain pipe had caused the standing water and the mosquitoes to happen. Which is very unfortunate that we are to blame for what the homeowner created. We have pictures to show what an incredible job this addition turned out to be to their home. Unfortunately, from this review we are guessing he did not feel the same way. In closing, it was homeowners error that the drain was covered up causing the fit pit not to drain properly. Due the homeowners grade work after the project was completed. In which, we instructed the homeowner not only the issue but also how he could fix it himself.

project was to take 2-3 weeks, but was told to allow a month for rain delays. After an initial deposit, he also requested 2 draws for materials. Said everything was paid for after that. Well after 2 1/2 months had to fire him. He did not follow codes from building dept, did not make any progress on the job unless I threatened him with law suit or formal complaint with state licensing. I wound up paying double the permit fees because he began work without valid permit, paid for garage door thru him and once again to the garage door company. Can see trees thru the soffit, gaps between the door and siding allowing water inside, windows installed at wrong height, plus many other issues. Will probably have to file suit against him

Upon starting this project customer and city approved site to build new garage. Customer advised me that the septic system was on the side of the house. Upon digging the footings we found the septic system. The customer had told us wrong information on the placement of the septic system. We then had to move location of the garage which had very different elevation which cost much more to build a foundation. Customer did not want to pay difference. Also, upon moving locations the city required a brick foundation instead of just block because it was on the side of the house that can be seen. Customer did not want to pay for that cost even though it was their fault that we had to move the garage to the side yard. So in closing, having to move the location of the garage cost more than originally quoted because of elevation change and city requiring brick instead of block foundation. Customer did not want to pay difference at the end of project so they decided that they could fire me and not pay what was due!

We did not know Brian and were skeptical at first, but as the days went on the quality and professionalism were astounding. Every detail was thought of and tended to by Brian. He insisted on quality and only the best from his subcontractors. The addition looks like it was always a part of "our old house". If you have the opportunity to work with Brian, I encourage you to do so. What a pleasure.
