On Sunday (4/7/2024), Paul with Good News Home Services responded to my bush trimming project posted on Angi. I sent him photos of the yard, and he then came to the house the next day (4/8) to inspect the bushes to be trimmed. He called my cell phone, and we discussed the job as he looked around. Later that day, he texted me a quote for $775 and said he could do the job on Friday (4/12). I agreed. He then changed the date to Thursday (4/11). He then rescheduled for Saturday (4/13). On Friday, per his request, we changed the date to Wednesday (4/17) On Wednesday (4/17/2024), Paul and a younger associate came to the house to do the job around 10:30 AM. He arrived in a small pickup truck which did not provide space to remove the debris. (Also, they would visibly have trouble cutting the bushes with the tools they did bring.) Around 12:15 PM, Paul left to get a Home Depot small rental trailer that he would attach to his truck. He returned at about 12:45 PM, and he and his associate loaded the trailer with debris cut so far and continued working. They both left with the debris in the trailer at around 2:30PM. They returned at 4PM, collected their tools from the yard, did a little bit of trimming of the bushes on the fence in the front driveway, and then they left at about 4:15PM. After they drove off, I got a text message from Paul that they had finished. I immediately replied that the job was not complete. My son, who was working inside of the house, stepped outside and took pictures that I was able to forward to Paul. The bushes were still wild and unkempt. I could also see their work on surveillance camera footage at the house. I know they did some work, but the bushes at the end of the day still looked horrible. I have before and after photos that show how he only made a small dent in the trimming project. Paul and I went back and forth regarding whether he had indeed finished the job. When we disagreed in our text messages, Paul conceded that the phone discussion we had as he assessed the job may not match the job description language in his quote. He said that he was only going off of the job description in the quote. That's frustrating, but I didn't notice how the job description in his quote was incorrect because I was reviewing several other quotes. Therefore, I agreed to go with just the job description in his text quote -- even though that was not the agreement. Here is the description of the job from his quote: "-- Trim back 225ft of hedge/bushes to be appx. 5ft thick by 6ft tall (West and North Fence line from House wrapping around to back of garage) -- Trim back other bushes near East Fence -- Cut back bushes by front driveway -- Haul away all debris". His description of the work to be done included the note that the hedges/bushes be trimmed "appx. 5ft thick by 6ft tall" which is not in line with what we discussed on the phone. We did discuss trimming the bushes down to 6ft in height, but I don't know where he got the 5ft thick measurement. We discussed cutting the bushes back to be closer to the fence. The bushes originally were mostly already about 5ft from the fence. So, that was not what we discussed. There was a lot of growth over 6ft tall that remained after he left the job. The West Fence (as he refers to it in his quote) extends from the front yard to the backyard. He admits he did not trim the growth along the West Fence that was to the side of the house. The growth there was left untouched and completely wild. His quote did not exclude that part of the West Fence. And he examined it when he originally assessed the job. The Before and After photos show that he left so much tall growth along the fence that it's obvious he did an incomplete job. He finished less than half of the job. I asked him several times to just come back and finish the job. Even if he didn't complete it to my satisfaction, I wanted him to at least cut down the areas of growth he skipped so that he met the low standards set in his quote. He refused to do so without charging an hourly fee or some other additional charge. Eventually, he agreed to drop the cost of the job from $775 to $650. But since I was on the hook to pay another professional to complete his job, I insist that's unacceptable. I proposed a discount lowering the cost to $400 to both compensate them for the work they did do and me for the incomplete work that I was left to fix with yet another professional. He refused to accept this more reasonable discount or to come back and complete the job. ($400 is a fair price, but $450 is okay also.) After a long stalemate, I was forced to finally hire another lawn service. The lawn service that fixed Paul's job had better equipment (including a trailer already attached to a truck at the beginning of the job) and moved far more efficiently. I think Paul and his associate worked hard, but this job was far too big for him at the rate he quoted. We both would have been better off if he had passed on the job when he first assessed it.
Description of Work: Trimmed a portion of the bushes and shrubbery along fences at my property, but he did not trim everything that should have been trimmed.

Response from Good News Home Services
The work we quoted is exactly what we completed. The homeowner wanted us to come complete additional work for free. The work she wants done is clearing more brush between the house and fence, on the side of the house. The original quote is copied below, and states we were clearing brush from the house along the fence line, not beside the house. We have already removed 1500lbs of small limbs, sticks, and leaves. That equates to about 15-20 yards of material. Two employees worked for 6 hours to complete this job, which is longer than what we had estimated. There are several trees in the brush that we are unable to cut down, as well as tall brush hanging over from the neighbors that we are unable to cut. Wherever possible on the home owners property we cut the brush down to 6 ft and appx. 5 ft from the fence.
