Mike Smith came out promptly to give us an estimate. He knew that he was among 3 contractors, in each category, bidding on the work. This house was built in 1963 and, of all the contractors, Mike was most familiar with the oddities of older houses. He was also the only one to give us a detailed sketch of every one of the items he was pricing (roof, gutters, exterior painting), replete with dimensions and price per square foot of any boards that might have to be replaced under those 3 existing roofing layers. A to Z's price was not the lowest; nor was it the highest. But it was certainly the most thorough estimate, leaving almost nothing to chance, and this one company could do everything we needed done, providing us with just one contact (Mike Smith). In addition, Mike included a copy of their insurance and references for us to call - without being asked to do so - and they warranty their workmanship (including roof leakage) for 5 years, as opposed to the customary 2 years of other contractors we talked with. Once we settled on a start date, work began right on time. Each of the crews (roofers, painters, and the gutter/downspout folks) was professional, quick, cleaned up beautifully after themselves, and took pride in their work. In all, the entire job lasted approximately 6 days. Mike came by every day to check on progress and see if we had any complaints or additional wants. The house looks fabulous and the roof no longer leaks. In addition - and one of the best parts! - the estimate and the final cost were exactly the same! That's right: no cost overruns! Yes, we will use A to Z Construction again, when the need arises, and have already referred customers to them for both exterior and interior work.
Description of Work: 1. Roofing, which included removing 3 previous roofing layers and completely re-sealing and re-shingling the entire roof. 2. Gutters and downspouts - removing them and the Gutter Helmets on them, adding 4 downspouts, painting and re-installing the gutters, helmets and downspouts. 3. Exterior painting, including replacing rotted wood (fascia board and/or siding and/or trim), sanding, and re-caulking/puttying where necessary; replacing 2 decorative shutters was also necessary.

The individual responsible for the gutter and gutter helmet repair/replacement was excellent - professional, courteous, punctual. He and the office staff were very helpful and responsive, performed the work as agreed and I am very pleased with the gutters & helmets. My only comment about that part of the job is that the gutter helmet system is a little pricey. I had also requested a quote for siding replacement & paintin around the outside of the garage. A different individual came out timely and seemed quite professional in his approach. He measured, we discussed what I wanted done, and he said he would get back to me in a day or two with a quote. He did not, so I called the office to request that he call me. This went on for 2 months. I never did get the quote for that work ... and therefore I will NOT be hiring A to Z to do the siding work. It is now nearly 6 months, and I am beginning the process of looking for someone else to perform this work.

The man was late getting here. He said he needed to go up on the roof to look at it. We needed a roof repaired, siding on both sides repaired, and interior painting. After coming down from the roof, he asked if the insurance had been notified. He said the way the roof looked, we should inform our insurance company. He said he would come back with the estimate after we talked with the insurance. The day they were supposed to meet the insurance adjuster, he said he couldn't come. I asked if someone else could be here. The insurance adjuster said that the only thing that needed to be done was to repair 6 sheets of shingles. We now have a claim on our insurance for basically nothing.

How did it go overall? Terribly. First of all, they decided that this would be a "training" session for a new guy. So I got to pay for 2 guys, while one guy was standing around watching. The job cost almost 3 times much as the verbal estimate. Yes I know, I should have gotten a written estimate but these guys came recommended by a friend. The friend had them perform new work and this was remodel work which they apparently don't know who to do. Upon original discussions, Rick said it would take a couple of hours. Two days later, my ceilings were ripped open, the drywall had been poorly put back into place, and I was told fixing the ceiling "was my problem." Rick (the head guy) was incredibly rude and so were the office people when I tried to get them to reduce the overpriced invoice. I also had them install a new porch light. Instead of running the wire inside the wire, they simply stapled it to the siding.
Description of Work: I hired a "professional" electrician to install some can lights in my living room and dinning room. I am very experienced with home improvements having done several "studs-out" remodels personally. I didn't have the time to do this particular project before we had a party scheduled. I hired this company to do the install since the Romex needed to be snaked through several ceiling joists. So the drywall ceiling wouldn't have to be repaired.

From start to finish A to Z construction came thru wonderfully! Our contact was Mr. Brian Rogers, the field representative contractor for the company. When we called him out for an estimate, there was no song and dance routine, no silly videos to watch. Just old timey down to buisness, honest to goodness professionalism. He found out exactly what we wanted and the estimate was fair and precise. When Brian said he would be at our house for a meeting he was there on time. He told us precisely when the work would start and when the work would be finished. The work started on a Tuesday and was completed that Friday. When the job was finished the installers cleaned up the worksite very well. The siding looked wonderful! It was installed professionaly and it was crisp, the lines matched and neighbors would stop by just to see it. We still get many commemnts on how nice the house looks and what a good job was done. When it came time to pay, the estimate we got at first was exactly what we paid at the end! The courteousness, professionalsm and honesty of Brian Rogers and A to Z Construction is excellent! Brian could write the book that other contractors should follow. I am still amazed that a company still exists of this kind in a world where others just want to take your money and give you lousy service. I applaud Brian and A to Z for a job well done! Five Star Service!

Their price was a little bit high for me. I think it's because they're like a general contractor. I didn't see where they had any bad ratings. They did follow-up. There was a lag in time. I would not say that my experience was a bad experience.

It took a really long time and it was twice as high as any other estimate. The other estimates I got were $800. They were going to come down and tear down the gutter and put new gutters. They probably do a good job but they are expensive, and the estimate took a really long time. I guess I’d grade them B minus for professionalism, as they took a lot of your time just to give you an estimate.

Called Gutter Helmet on December 2nd to ask them to come out and repair a section of gutter and Gutter Helmet that were damaged. We were informed that an estimate would have to be generated and that there would be an $89.95 charge for the estimate. If we decided to go ahead with the work the charge for the estimate would be deducted from the final bill. Our credit card was billed for the $89.95 the next day. We had to call back a few times before the being given an appointment for the estimate. The Estimator came out on January 9th to estimate the job. After changing the schedule several times the work was performed on January rd. The work was done quickly and in a professional manner. We like the Gutter Helmet system but are disappointed in the amount of time it took to get the repairs completed. The $89.95 fee for an estimate would be more tolerable if the credit card charge took place on the date of the estimate. Communication throughout the entire process was not up to expectation.I indicated above that we would use this company again because they are the authorized Gutter Helmet franchisee in the area.
Description of Work: Removed 18' of damaged gutter and replaced with 18' of new 5" gutter. Reconnected 1 downspout. Removed 1 damaged Gutter Helmet panel and replaced with new panel.

They did a great job expect for the sloppy caulk job!
Description of Work: I had the sliding glass door on the back porch replaced. The door is great, no heat gets through, the door & screen door slides great, the door is level, no wind comes through, and the installer put insulation in the sides & top. They installed brick molding around the sides, reinforced the bottom then chalked it. Expect for the sloppy caulk job & caulk on the bricks, I am very satisfied!
Reason for implementing this project was driven by two requirements: a) existing crawl space hatch was very small and difficult to access b) planned deck construction would obstruct existing access - needed to have it relocated. House is 1950's era, conventional foundation. Initially, finding a contractor was somewhat challenging for this project. I contacted several companies listed as basement / crawlspace specialists (per internet sites) to no avail. Mostly these other companies seem to specialize in crawlspace encapsulation services. Even though they listed "crawlspace access" as part of their offered services; as soon as I began to discuss specifics of cutting through brick veneer & concrete block foundation wall they would quickly decline to quote. Researched general contractors via Angie's List. A to Z demonstrated decent ratings. Reviewed their website and decided to call for a quote. Brian responded as Project Manager and arranged to review the proposed work; along with Tom. I noted that their business card states "Solving problems is our specialty" so I was curious as to whether they would opt to quote. I provided a detailed description as to how I wanted the access constructed. Initially my plan was to use purchased metal crawl space doors available through Vestal building products / General Shale & Brick. These turned out to be unusable therefore custom built doors became the chosen approach. Tom recommended a fabricator who would be able to manufacture doors and mounting frames precisely as desired. Cost for the doors was moderate and purchased separately: $450 for (1) 24"x24" and (1) 16"x24". Construction of the doors and frames was very robust and provided for proper support of the upper courses of brick veneer once the openings were cut. I also specified there must be a means to secure (lock) the hatches be included in the design. A to Z quoted the job at $2088 for installation (only) each opening. I had originally estimated somewhere between $1000 to $1500 might be an appropriate amount per opening. This was the reason for price being graded as a B. Given the difficulties of finding someone to quote the job and having it performed exactly to my specifications I therefore elected to accept the quote. Both individuals provided me with a feeling of confidence that the work was fully within their abilities. This contributed to the decision to move forward. Their demeanor is quite professional & friendly. Decision was made to perform one installation for now and delay the 2nd for budgetary aspects. Actual work took place over a period of 3 partial days; to allow for concrete to cure day one and epoxy adhesive on 2nd day. Overall the work went smoothly. Communications were good, emails & phone calls were promptly answered and specific requests during the course of the work were carried out to my satisfaction. Installation was neatly done, Clean up was thorough. Overall I was pleased and do recommend them to others. Currently the intent is to use them again for the second installation in approzimately 6 months.
Description of Work: Bit of an unusual project in this case. I selected the category "basement remodeling" as it was the only closest choice available in the expanded selections. The more appropriate category is actually "crawl space access". Services performed: 1) Indirectly through another supplier: manufacture of heavy gage custom crawl space access hatch & frame 2) Cut through brick veneer and block foundation 3) Pour a concrete sill at the base of removed foundation block section per item #2 4) Frame the new opening with treated dimensional lumber and provide proper support to remaining brick courses above 5) Install new crawl space frame and hatch manufactured per item #1 6) Seal around new frame installation with epoxy sealant 7) Debris removal

They did the job and did it well. They arrived on time and completed the job in the timeframe estimated. The gutter helmets work. My only negative comment is their prices for repair work on the soffit / facia. I think they were a bit high. They had also quoted me a price of $1500 to replace my drip cap and the lower piece of siding. My friend and I did it ourselves on a Sunday afternoon in about 4 hours. It cost me around $200 for the wood, paint and caulking. One other comment I'd make is that when the first rain occured after the installation, I had one downspout that was overflowing where it meets the gutter. Upon investigation I found the problem to be a very clogged downspout, from the ground up for about 6 feet. I was able to quickly clear the mud and debris that had accumulated. But, had they done a water test, they would have found the problem before me. All in all I am happy with my gutter helmets and I look forward to never having to clean gutters again.
Description of Work: Gutter helmets were installed on all of my gutters. There was also some work done on replacing some of my soffit / facia that had been damaged by the weather.
