We had a leak along the roofline of the garage, where it met the side of the second story of the house. When the representative from the company came to do the estimate, she went into the attic over the garage to look at the roof leak. She stepped off the rafter and went through the ceiling into the garage. Fortunately she was not hurt. She then proceeded to rip out pieces of the ceiling, saying to my husband that they would have to come out that far anyway. In the course of this ongoing destruction, several items stored in the garage were damaged, as we discovered when WE cleaned up the mess. They then gave us an estimate to pay for the ceiling repairs for the ceiling they had damaged. That should have been our first clue. Still, we went ahead and arranged for them to do the roof repair. The day they came back to set up for the roof repair, we had an upstairs plumbing leak (into the ceiling below) and asked if they could fix it since they were there - he said they could. He had to cut into the ceiling, and left a pile of drywall and dust on the floor; he did not offer to clean it up and left the mess behind in the foyer. When I called several days later to complain about the roof repair (below) and mentioned the mess, the owner got a little defensive and asked if he needed to come out and clean it up. Well, of course I had cleaned it up by then. By the way - the repair to the leak turned out to be only temporary -- a couple of weeks later we had to call out a real plumber who actually fixed the leak, cutting a bigger hole, spending about twice the amount of time actually doing the repair, cleaning up after himself, and charging us less. When they actually fixed the roof (and it does seem like they DID fix the roof leak), and replaced a couple of pieces of siding on the side of the house, it looked like a piece of siding on the front of the house was damaged. When I called about it, the owner came out to look at it. He asked if the house had been recently painted (it had about 9 months previously) and asked if I knew that the painters had caulked up there. (Yes -- painters frequently caulk.) The damage was just to the paint, which was cut cleanly in a circle exactly the size of the downspout guttering and was peeling away. (I suspect that they bumped the siding roughly with the downspout either when they removed it or replaced it during the siding repair.) He told me they would be happy to fix it when they came back out to fix the ceiling in the garage. This would be the ceiling they damaged that they wanted us to pay for. I told him that we also felt like their expectation that we pay for the ceiling repair was unreasonable; he countered that the ceiling was wet and would have to have been fixed anyway. Wet or not (and we aren't so sure that it was -- the girl who fell through it didn't say that it was, and the ceiling mess that we cleaned up wasn't wet drywall), the extent of repair needed went beyond dampness. We declined any further services from this company and absolutely do not recommend them to anyone.

Thank you [Member Name Removed] for taking the time out of your day to write us a review! We hope you keep us in mind next time you could use our help around the house!
We used this company based on the good reviews here on Angie's list. This was a huge mistake. Kyle came over three times to review the repairs we wanted done and estimate the cost. I went over in great detail the exact work that we wanted performed. Our plumbing leak was in concrete and would require a directional drilling engineer to place a new water line. Unique Const. hired a subcontractor to complete the plumbing that had to be connected to the new water line as well as the remodeling work connected to the plumbing work. The subcontractor said he was not given the instructions we gave to Kevin and his work was not supervised. The work included finishing a utility room area to accommodate a new stackable washer and dryer. He never looked at the units to determine where the new water and electrical connections should be positioned to allow easy access and to allow for ease in connecting the units. They refused to relocate the vent for the dryer and also refused to reposition the plumbing connections to fit the washer as they will work although they are not in the ideal position. They are behind the units so you have to drag the washer/dryer unit out into the room to reach the water connections. He installed Pex water line under the house rather that the copper lines I requested. I've fixed two leaks myself and will call another plumber to replace the Pex with copper. We may have an underground leak in the new plumbing based on the water bill I got today. This may require the concrete they replaced to be dug up again to check the connections. Three of the doors installations are ok although one of the doors was not positioned the way we requested. The screen doors are not. After a couple of weeks one is not closing properly due to a shift in the hinges, on the other one the lock is not working properly. The laundry room remodel was a disaster. A wall he built to accommodate bi-fold doors was in the wrong position and had to be torn out and replaced. Kevin didn't notice I had a dryer electrical plug that would no longer meet code so I had to hire an electrician to install a new one. After all the work was almost completed the subcontractor told us he was neither a licensed plumber or electrician. He was a hard worker but did not get the supervision he needed.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience and I by no means intended for your experience with our company to be a bad one. You mentioned that we had met 3 times before work had even begun. I assumed that we had a good enough relationship for you to reach out to me to correct any issues you may have had. That is my fault for assuming that and I should have regularly checked in with you. If there is anything I can do to help out the situation please feel free to reach out to me personally on my cell phone. They were good. I had a couple of jobs for them to do. But they didn't honor. It was unclear about what they could do and told them what I needed and asked them if that will take time and if they have the stuff to do it and which they had to go and get. I disliked that. I would prefer someone to come out first and know what they are doing rather than to come out without a clue. The work was done right. It was done how I wanted it to be. But I wanted people to whom I can just show what I wanted rather than to question each and every thing. I also felt 199$ that I paid was way too costly for what they did. I could have got it done cheaper somewhere else.

Hired UCS to insulate the walls of my garage since the attached garage stayed as cold inside as outside. The worker arrived and I explained what I wanted done and we came up with a plan that we agreed would work. He left to go rent a machine to blow insulation in the walls. After being gone about 15 minutes he returned and said that he talked to his boss and he had a better idea. Instead of blowing insulation he wanted to tear the sheetrock off of two walls then insulate and then redo my sheetrock. I told him that this was not going to happen as this would make this job about 3 times the cost. The only thing that this would have done was make me about $1000 poorer for no reason. I told him I believed his boss was trying to make needless money off of me and told him to just go ahead and do it the way we had discussed. I bought this thru Angies List so it was prepaid. If I had not already paid I would of probably told the guy that I would just find someone else for the job. After day one he left and cleaned up part of the mess in the yard and driveway. I then took my shop vac outside and spent about an hour vacuuming my yard and driveway. When he finished on day two I told him that I wanted all the insulation picked up when the job was complete. He came and wanted paid for the job and i told him it was not complete till my yard was clean. He came back about ten minutes later and again wanted paid. I told him again when every piece of insulation was clean I would pay. So it took several times of me telling him to clean up before it happened. It really makes me wonder how many time they have gone out and found someone that did not know anything about construction and charged them for doing needless work. The guy did really good work but after trying to pull a fast one on me I will not hire them again. I also had him figure putting gutter guard on my gutters and he over measured my gutters by 25 feet or about $150 extra dollars. i do not trust these people and if you decide to use them I would question everything!

The service provider was prompt, and completed my ceiling repair for the cost approximated over the phone. The service tech was very nice and we would definitely recommend them and will use them again in the future. The owner, Kyle is very easy to deal with and talk to.
Description of Work: Repaired a hole that had to be cut out of the ceiling due to a recent upstairs shower drain repair. They matched our ceiling texture about as good as I could hope for. Looks great.
Oh my goodness! WAY more was accomplished than I ever dreamed within 8 hours. My "honey-do" list was smashed. So many things that I had been putting off were accomplished. Work was completed very efficiently and it was done well. The price was beyond reasonable for the work. I cannot WAIT to use these folks again. My only regret was not hiring them sooner.
Description of Work: Demolished old street lamp near street Demolished large flagpole in yard Repaired fluorescent light fixture in laundry room Installed new locking mechanism on french room doors Installed 2 new ceiling fans Installed new kitchen flush mount light Installed 2 new track lights Replaced ~ 10 receptacles and switches
They were prompt, reliable, and highly qualified. Scott was very attentive to details, was highly professional, and consistently reliable. Scott did 95% of my projects so most of what I have to say is based on his work. First Scott modified our closets and rebuilt them. I wanted a custom shower that had more than one feature Scott had not dealt with before, including Pulse shower panel system, but he went above and beyond to do what was needed to get the job done in a highly professional manner--including installing a fully customized ADA compliant bathroom that has high style, and even sexy looking features. His attention to details was exceptional, and he took the time to get it right. Brian was also good to work with and he was also reliable and very competent. Clint was in training and it showed, but he was also quite pleasant to work with, although his work needed more supervision, but he was open to learning and he has great potential. There was a 4th worker who was very good at carpentry, but I had a concern about his attitude and when I mentioned it to the owner, that worker was removed from my project. Overall, I give this company a AAA+ Rating and highly recommend them. I would not hesitate to hire them again, and in fact have them returning to install custom stained stair treads and risers that will tie in the upstairs hardwood and the downstairs wood parquet. Plus they started a loft for me that will need to be finished later because I need to think about it for a bit longer, and there is a lot of painting to be done as well, and I may decide to modify another closet and add a 2- story all-weather porch. These folks are highly professional.
Description of Work: Tiled the kitchen, laundry room and 2 bathrooms, installed hardwood floors as well as one room of parquet flooring, and replaced lighting and light switches. In the process of doing the flooring they found two significant structural problems that were quickly repaired. We had purchased the house 3 years ago, and every year we were having to repair new cracks that would appear in the walls and along the edges of the ceilings. And one area of the upstairs hall would sink when stepped on. In the process of removing the old flooring and installed the new, they discovered changes made by the previous owner that had created structural deficiencies, including an exterior wall that was not fully attached to the interior structure which was causing the wall to flex when the wind blew, which explained why the walls were cracking and in need of constant repair. In fact, over time the wall could have fallen down. If I had hired just hardwood floor installers rather than competent licensed building contractors, these problems may not have been resolved.
Unique Construction has been wonderful to work with and I will use them again to renovate my kitchen. They were very professional and went above and beyond to make my master bath fabulous. It took about 4 months to complete the job but it was well worth the wait. My home is about 18 years old and it's built on a slab so it was quite a job to make the changes I wanted. I had them move my shower to the opposite side of the room and move the vanities to a different location. They had to break up the cement floor with a jackhammer to move plumbing and drains and then when that was complete they installed elements for heated floors and finally new tiling. They added a huge shower with a bench and several shower heads and body sprays. They built a walk in closet. They installed double vanities, additional cabinets under a bay window plus a new a make-up vanity. They Installed all my new lighting fixtures. I am attaching some pictures of the finished product. I want to thank Brian, Scott and Jennifer for making this project turn out great!
Description of Work: Unique Construction did a complete renovation of the master bathroom. They gutted the room down to the studs, removing shower, garden tub, vanities, closet, flooring and changed the layout of the plumbing and moved the drains. They installed the new cabinets, plumbing fixtures, lighting, installed heated floors and custom marble tiled shower

This is a very old house which had never had any guttering on it before -- as a result, years of runoff from the roof had rotted out several lengths of fascia and dry rot has claimed several feet of soffit. So before any guttering could be put up, all that old wood had to be pulled out and replaced. Paint all along the fascia on all sides was flaking, so that had to be removed and the old wood painted. Finally the guttering and downspouts were put in place and the area thoroughly cleaned up afterwards. Bryan was very skilled and dedicated, even working all day Sunday to finish the job. The lady who was sent along to do the painting was very personable and hard-working, doing far more painting that I had expected. All in all a very professional job by people who were very pleasant to work with.
Description of Work: Replaced several rotted fascia and soffit boards, installed guttering and downspouts where there had never been any before, cleaned and painted the old fascia and along the roof line.

The service was performed well, from initial contact to the truck departing my home. A fair price was offered (in fact a little lower than others had estimated). The installer arrived on time and explained what the cost would actually be, after measuring for the first time. He went to work immediately. He advised me that some rotted fascia should be replaced. I observed that it was truly rotted (60 year old house). A price for replacement and painting was offered and accepted. The job was completed with all refuse carried off. I'm very satisfied, and would use Unique again.

Colt called Kyle up on the roof. "Can you come up here real quick? I want to show you something?" Yes, they found light-weight debris over two (2) downspouts; one of the downspouts (in front) was not too bad and was the depth of the house distant from where the guttering fell away from the house ? the screws had not pulled out and the guttering had not fallen away from the house. The other downspout was in back, abutting the other corner of the newer guttering. There was very little light-weight debris there. None of the screws in that section of guttering pulled out; none of that section of guttering came away from the house. I cleaned yet a third downspout, which had at least twice the debris in it than did the downspout nearest to the back corner of the newer guttering. None of those screws had backed out; none of that guttering came away from the house. The only section that came away from the house is where part of the fascia board came down at the time of the initial installation in June 2014. Pics of the debris have been provided to Angie's List. ***Kyle said the front - South side- fascia board is angled away from the house and that is why it seems to be coming away from the house. --- After some logical thinking, this makes absolutely no sense. If the fascia board were really angled away from the house, the guttering would also be angled away from the house. If the guttering were angled away from the house, the guttering at the corner would not be able to be mitered with the newer guttering on the West side. It is mitered. Colt had taken a few pics of what he found while on the roof. One showed where Kyle had, improperly, applied caulking about one week after the original gutter replacement in June 2014. Colt had taken one picture showing a very small area of fascia board. Kyle asked if I wanted them to remove the gutter - that, if there was fascia board, they would charge me $600, but, if they found a problem, they would make it good. Kyle pointed out that the picture showed fascia board. (The picture was of one small area and did not show the entire fascia board drop - how it hangs lengthwise from the roof. The picture also did not show the entire length of fascia board in the relevant area.) I told him I would wait to see what happens. (Even though we had torrential rains at that time, I am waiting to see what happens) I am a good Christian woman. I do not lie. I do not exaggerate. I am not blind. I am not stupid. I do not gamble. I know the truth. I do not tolerate anyone ? including Kyle and Colt ? attempting to extort $600 ? or any other amount of money - out of me to correct a problem they created in June 2014. I also brought up the fact that I had seen estimates of gutter jobs, by Kyle's company, on Angie's List - the entire job, for a similar size roof, was just a bit more than $600. Kyle said they carry only two (2) colors: white and off-white - that mine is more expensive. I pointed out that it comes by the roll - Kyle agreed (very little from the roll was used, so it could be used on another job). Kyle freely admitted the deal is a loss-leader. Kyle had Colt snug the screws where the guttering had come away from the roof. One bracket had to be moved, as it had come away from the house. When I pointed out where the screw had pulled through the flashing, either Kyle or Colt said it was an old hole. (No, the hole was from this most recent event, where the gutter was hanging away from the house. Colt's picture showed the bracket directly below the torn area of the flashing.) In one of the pictures I had taken on July 23, 2015, one could see where the screw had pulled out. (This has already been provided to Angie's List.) The only part of the guttering that came away from the house is the section that came down shortly after it was installed, because part of the fascia board is missing in that section. No other section of the newer guttering was impacted - only where the caulking had been, incorrectly, applied shortly after the initial gutter replacement - and that is because part of the fascia board is missing. Also, to snug up screws that had pulled out is an effort in futility. Once the screw hole has been compromised (the wood has been stripped), the screw will not hold properly or snugly. This company is trying to save its hide by covering up the problems it created and blaming me. What I am really sorry for is not posting an update, the week after the original installation in June 2014. A week after the original installation, during torrential rains, the new section of gutter came away from the house. Kyle's solution was to apply caulking to hold the gutter to the roof. Kyle needs to get himself a lot of education, when it comes to building construction and proper installation of a gutter. Unfortunately, the pictures I took from the day of installation I, erroneously, deleted them, thinking it was the end of the matter and, apparently, it was not the end of the matter. Keep away from this unprofessional, and building-wise uneducated, youngster. He will do you wrong and blame you for what he did wrong, by attempting to cover it up with his lies. And trying to extort a bundle of money from you, when you know the truth and he has conjured up all manner of lies in order to cover his tail. And, you want to stay away from the gutter company that they (Kyle and Colt) proudly proclaim to be their own.
Description of Work: Kyle Hohman and Colt arrived at my house at 11a.m. - the scheduled time. The first thing Kyle said was, "What can we do to get all those things said about us (on Angie's List) taken down?” I said, "Remove gutter, replace gutter." I mentioned the fellow with the guttering company and was corrected by either Kyle or Colt - "...that is our company. If you call the phone number on the side of the truck, you will find it goes to our company."

Kyle was fantastic. The job went perfect. I had Unique replace all my gutters with seamless gutters. They make my house look so much nicer and they were the best priced in town. I highly recommend them to anyone.

chimney repair

He was very good and very thorough but $1,600.00 to repair a chimney was just more than what we wanted to pay. He told us what he would do and gave us an estimate. He was very nice, very polite and I'm sure he would have done a good job, it's just that we couldn't afford $1,600.00. He was there when he said he would be there, that's the good part. He was here on time. He gave us a good estimate and a very detailed estimate. From the estimate, the quality would have been very good. If I could afford him, I would use him in the future.
Description of Work: Unique Construction Services gave us a quote to fix the chimney.

Response from Unique Construction Services
[Member Name Removed], thank you for providing our company a review. I remember meeting with you and looking over your roof with you. You had a very beautiful home! When I was looking over your file, it looks like I provided you a bid for your roof in the amount of $16,000. The bid included the following: Remove existing shingles and felt paper including dump fees Felt Paper #15 Replace boots Flashing in valleys Ice and water shield in valleys Upgraded dimensional shingles Upgraded shingle over ridge vent Attic Fan I did give you a call back and you choose to go with another contractor that had worked on your home before. I do appreciate you giving us a chance to bid on your project and I hope we can work together in the future! Kyle Hohman Project Manager Unique Construction
They did a great job. The contractors, Kyle and his brother Colt were easy To talk to and tried very hard to please us. They sent 2 guys to do the work And they showed up everyday and worked very hard in the extremely cold Weather. Thank you Scott and JJ.
