Smith Handyman Service

I hired this company to assemble an elliptical machine. The technician assembled it incorrectly, causing the bolt shown in the picture to strip and one side of the machine to break. It is now unusable. The only thing this company has offered to do is charge me more money (with no guarantee of actually fixing the machine). A terrible and costly experience all around.

We were working from home due to COVID. As long as Smith Handyman received approval from us in writing before ordering materials, the process was ok. This bad review is mostly because 'she' ordered the kitchen countertops without confirming the product with us prior to placing the order, and this was for a more expensive quartz material. We have run this error by multiple contractors AND suppliers and they have all noted they would NEVER order such an expensive product without written confirmation from the customer. The day of delivery we were home and what arrived wasn't even close to what we'd shared via email, with a spreadsheet that listed the materials for the project, and multiple times verbally. 'She' insisted it was a joint error based on a photo from us which was sent ONLY to show the cost of the material - she then defended herself by saying they can't order material from a picture (she often contradicted herself). This error was clearly hers - she has zero proof that we approved what she ordered. She insisted we pay half of the deposit for the wrong product which we 100% disagreed should happen as it was clearly her error. It was insinuated work would come to a halt until we paid half the deposit. We finally paid the amount requested but clearly noted it was ONLY for the work to continue and we disagreed that we owed the amount. Not only did she make a huge error, this cost us having no kitchen 2 months due to waiting for the correct countertop to arrive and be cut for the order., vs. the original 4+ weeks This was an additional expense as most of our meals had to be deliveries. Most days their employees showed up and would comment things like 'I am here to do xxx' but we would have to show them exactly what needed to be done - communication was poor, even within Smith Handyman. Also, we requested a quote for an additional project not included in the original quote which she submitted in the amount of $5,000. We declined the work as this seemed very excessive. We have since had the work done by another contractor for $1,000, and it was completed as quality work, including the finish work. We have had to have multiple issues fixed by our new contractor due the poor quality of work that Smith Handyman did. IF you use Smith Handyman buy as many of the products yourself as 'she' will mark-up excessively. Make sure you are CLEAR about what the quote includes; our experience was that no matter how many times we went over what we wanted to be done for a project, after receiving a quote and going over what would be done, we would find out much of what we wanted was not included in the quote. Also, now that we are working with another contractor, again for multiple projects, we have discovered Smith Handyman's quotes are MUCH higher than we should have paid; COVID or no COVID. She now refuses to respond to our reviews, and to our Better Business Bureau request to refund us the half of the deposit because it WAS HER error, not ours. This is a reflection of their poor customer service. Her way of doing business is, 'get it done so we can get paid'.

The work was done well by Jon and Riley with oversight by project manager Andrew. All three are very professional, competent, exacting, and personable. I could not be more pleased with the results of their labors or with them as people working in my home. The same must be said for Kevin who evaluated the project and gave me an estimate as well as Alex and Angel who have painted the interior, put down new baseboards, and replaced an improperly installed floor.
