Stan Swaggerty started work in our master bathroom in our new home under construction. At first glance the work appeared normal, the time to completion however was very slow because he was doing a lot of the work himself, by himself, without a helper on the job for days at a time. He began work in July and was still there at the end of October. He had some minimal help from his nephew and/or his son occasionally. As soon as the first bathroom was complete, he covered all the floor surfaces with cardboard to ostensibly protect the tile, however, we discovered later that the flooring of both the stand-up shower and floor was unacceptable, uneven tiles with sharp edges sticking up in the shower, and uneven grout joints. We have both video and photographic evidence of the poor workmanship. The walls in the bath seemed 'OK' but under close examination, there were extensive errors and omissions, both technical and esthetically. Uneven surfaces, poorly grouted joints and we discovered later, not properly waterproofed, with horrible drain transitions to the surrounding floor tile. We could not possibly imagine how the drain would work or look. He then began laying our kitchen and sunroom tile. The tile was not spaced evenly either vertically or horizontally, again, all is documented with photographic evidence. As soon as this portion was partially completed he had to remove some tiles because of poor workmanship by him. There were a couple of areas he never replaced the missing tiles (for weeks). He immediately covered his work with cardboard. He then moved to an upstairs bath and this job seemed much better aesthetically, bath walls were even but the Marble floor tiles were poorly grouted, poorly spaced both vertically and horizontally. Upon inspection by another tile person, we discovered the soap dish and downstairs bath seat were not properly waterproofed, in the case of the downstairs master bath, the seat was never finished. Material was ordered and received but he never got back to finish those remaining areas. The laundry room had chipped tiles laid right in the middle of the traffic pattern, vs. putting those edges against the wall where they wouldn't be noticed. Laundry room tile was uneven vertically and horizontally with very uneven grout joint spacing. The last bathroom was started but the workmanship was absolutely horrible. The tiles were uneven and spacing way off between sheets of matted diamond shaped patterns. This was expensive tile and it was completely ruined before he ever grouted it. We cancelled the job before he did any other work. We have had several professionals, three tile distributor representatives, a factory representative for a national tile manufacturer see this job, and all of them were shocked at the poor workmanship and lack of waterproofing in the visible soap dishes and unfinished seat area. Additionally, we hired a Forensic Architect to come photograph the entire job and document in his words the extent of this very poor workmanship both aesthetically and technically. This Architect serves as an expert witness in cases like this. Due to obvious water proofing problems we decided to remove all the product he had installed. During demolition we discovered more waterproofing problems that would have ruined our new home and likely costs us tens of thousands of dollars in water and mold damage in the coming years. Including his labor, our losses to date exceed $50,000 in ruined material, lost labor and demolition and replacement of 100% of his work. We have asked Mr Swaggerty to meet and discuss financial redress but to date he has not responded to regular or E-mail.
Description of Work: Stan Swaggerty (S&R Flooring) was recommended to us by a professional in the design business. He had previously done jobs successfully for this person. We assumed he was a highly competent tile contractor. He did tile work in three bathrooms and three other rooms. He laid a combination of natural and man-made stone and tile.
