Description of Work: I bought the Angie's List special for landscaping services. He showed up on time and did what was required. I didn't use them to do the job (decided to do it myself) but did use some of their ideas. He was professional and knowledgeable and did what he was supposed to do. Enough said!

Description of Work: What was provided? An Angie's List Big Deal landscape design and follow-on construction. | |As part of an Angie's List Big Deal the company Native Design provided a design to install a retaining wall parallel with the front of the house, provide backfill, topsoil, and plants in the newly terraced area behind the wall, and to install metal edging and a 4-foot wide river rock path directly adjacent the house. The design consisted of a plan view where features would be installed in relation to the house and a list of the items to be installed. Jacob provided a sample of the retaining block proposed to be installed. | |Prior to approval of the proposal I requested a specification and drawing detail on how the retaining wall would be installed. Drawing details with notes were provided and the contract was signed. | |How did it go? - Retaining Wall |The initial layout of the wall was short on both ends (approx 15 feet total). Excavation of the wall footing was 1/2 as wide as shown on the specification detail. I showed the workers where the current wall layout and footing excavation was at variance with the design drawing and their response was that they had not seen the drawing before. We worked through the problem to get the initial layout close to the design drawing. |Block was delivered that did not match the sample. There were discussions where I heard the sample block was no longer available. Jacob referred me to ACME Brick salesman for further discussions. ACME agreed to take the delivered block back and send out materials to match the sample retaining wall block. | |Block was delivered a second time that did not match the sample. Again there were discussions and I heard that material to match the sample block was not available. Following my search on the internet I sent Jacob a picture of the block and link for local area vendors. | |Block was delivered a third time and matched the sample block. Pieces to provide a finished look for the terminal points of the wall were not provided. I worked with the mason to design a way to terminate the wall to achieve a finished appearance. The retaining wall installation from that point was acceptable. | |How did it go? - Landscaping |Prior to placement of the behind-wall terrace soils to achieve final grade the crew excavated several inches of soil from adjacent the house and installed metal edging and a 4-foot wide river rock path. The rock path excavation was not constructed to drain and held several inches of water saturating the soils directly adjacent the house. I requested the deficiency be corrected. No resolution could be settled upon and I requested the river rock path be removed from the scope of work. Jacob proposed the river rock materials be moved to trim behind the top of the retaining wall and that was accepted. | |The river rock was moved but not properly segregated. I personally excavated to separate out 6 to 10 cubic feet of river rock stone carelessly mixed into fill soils. I requested verbally and in writing that care be taken to prevent the finish stone from being incorporated into the backfill soil. That request was not followed and more of the stone was buried in the backfill soils. | |Red clay was brought to fill and level out the terraced area behind the wall. There were several discussions required before the Native Design folks understood soils placed adjacent a structure need to be graded to drain away from the structure. | |Toward completion of the project the crew worked the red clay fill soils following a rain storm. This resulted in staining the top of the retaining wall block and much of the river rock material with residue from the red clay. | |Plants were installed in the red clay without placing a layer of top soil over those fill soils. Jacob explained the line item on the proposal listing "Top Soil" meant each plant root ball would be placed in pocket of top soil. The red clay was covered with a veneer of mulch to finish. |March 28, 2014 The crew demobilized from the project. A month later the retaining wall cap block and river rock remains stained with red clay. I have excavated additional river stone from soils that were pushed off the slope in front of the wall. A large stump removed to place the wall remains in the front yard where it was pushed off the slope and left. Red clay is visible through the receding mulch layer. | |I give Native Design an overall D rating because at the end of the day the project area looks acceptable. But please note the project required a lot of involvement from the home owner to get it to that point. Because of the switching of materials, design deficiencies, out of sequence work, and misrepresenting materials to be installed, I cannot at this time recommend Native Design to any person who does not have the ability to understand construction and direct the work. |

Response from Native Design & Hardscape
First off, as with all our clients, we appreciate the opportunity to work with them on their projects. We especially appreciate working with all different types of people as it gives us the opportunity to learn how to respond to a wide range of varying personalities in hopes of accommodating them during the process. In this case, we set out to build a routine retaining wall, walk and landscape valued at around 14k. The install was located on lower side of the house with the objective of elevating the slope and creating a level space from the house outward approximately 30'. The project of this size and scope generally takes around 10 business days with good weather. Immediately after the first day I realized this would not be the case; we would be accommodating our client's unusual request to inspect the job at each step of the way before continuing. Our first section of the project was to install a river rock walk along the house. After a rain there were small splotches of water, which would be typical in a river rock walk that sat on top of a layer of landscape fabric. Water percolates slowly through the fabric. The sub grade sloped away from the house. In all of this it is important to note that water cannot slope towards the house as it can create foundation issues. At any rate, the client was unsatisfied with the walk as he thought water would seep back towards the house. We agreed to disagree and we accommodated. We removed the walk. The client then requested that soil be reinstalled where the walk was. We agreed. We then spent 4 days reworking the soil to his specifications, this was a space approximately 60x4, not large. We string lined the for the grading and we chalk lined. We made additional changes to the grade after we thought he was satisfied with the original grade work from the original chalk line. Upon his approval we completed to his satisfaction the dirt work for this area. At this point we were 7 days into the project. It is important to note throughout the project that all phone calls and email were returned within 24hrs except on Sunday. When we began the retaining wall we started with the footer. The wall we were building was under 3' and therefore not a load bearing wall. The specifications I gave the client were a general spec for retaining walls up to 50' tall, it was not site specific. It was to serve as a general guideline. I should have communicated this fact. The original footer we installed was adequate for the size of the wall. The client was not satisfied and we doubled the size of the footer to accommodate the client. Upon his inspection and approval we moved forward. We did have a problem with the retaining wall block as the block that was originally sent was the same color and size, just a small varying design to the edges. The client desired the original block and we understood that and apologized for the fact and retrieved the desired block. The installation of wall went smoothly and up in 2 days. He was pleased and approved the wall. We then installed and graded the soil from the house to the wall. At this time we took careful provision to grade the soil. It is important to note that there was significant fall from the house to the wall to accommodate water. He was not satisfied with a few areas of the soil and we took a concrete screeder to even out any variation in the dirt. The dirt was as smooth as a concrete driveway. We then installed the plants. The client was not happy with the fact that more clay was used then topsoil, but I explained to him that all the plants installed had topsoil installed all around the root ball 2x the size of the plant as required. He was envisioning a blanket of topsoil. He was pleased overall. He mentioned that the river rock had some soils mixed in it along the wall from where they had been moved 2x's after taking them all up from the walkway. We offered to clean the rocks for him, but he declined. The project took approximately 21 working days. It is important to understand a few things from this project. Even though the client was communicated with us on a daily basis through phone or email or onsite, there was still a communication gap. Essentially the client had a certain way of doing things that were contrary to the way the contractor did. An important thing to note is that through the whole process we as the contractor accommodated our clients needs, even when we disagreed, through the course of the whole project. We did so with the objective of him being satisfied and we saw through the project to the end even when it cost us to do so. Again we appreciate the opportunity and will use it as an chance to understand and accommodate the individual and desires of our clients.

Description of Work: Replaced some pavers with different pavers that were more attractive and more functional. I signed up for the angie's list deal that was for a 1-hour consultation. They came out and only spent 15 minutes with me, I felt very rushed and like I was bothering them. I got the distinct impression that they came to see the place and then spent the hour coming up with a plan. They said they would email it to me in a few days. The first time I got their proposal it had zero drawings or plans just a $xsq ft = total cost type of quote. I emailed them and asked if that was all I got for my consultation and they said no, there should be a drawing which they then sent. It was something a 7-year old could have come up with in MS paint in 5 minutes, it wasn't a real drawing and i was amazed that they would send something so bad. It had zero information about the type of stone to be used, they just told me to go to the manufacturers website. I cannot express how disappointed i was in my experience. I felt ripped off that I paid that much for what should have been a free estimate. I'm also disappointed in Angie's list as they had the deal and I took that to be a recommendation of this companies services. I'm surprised that they would send their customers into such a horrible deal.

We are very happy with the design and quality of work. I must say Native has a good group of guys, they did good work, worked every day to complete the project as quickly as possible and cleaned up after themselves everyday. No doubt it was a construction site but we greatly appreciated the effort to clean up daily. A small thing but means your people care about the people they are working for. They also took the time to explain what they were doing and what was planned next whenever we asked them. Great job and we look forward to doing the next phase. Defintiely A+ rated for us.

I got them through an Angie's List coupon. This was the first time I have used them. The product ended up being fine. That was an A. There were a couple of issues probably because it was so hot. It wasn't a good time to be doing this. The guys were tired, they would come late and only stay half a day. I didn't blame them at all but I had to get on them about cleanup every day. They would leave soda cans around. Once I complained about it to the head guy, it was fine. They usually told me when they were going to be there. I think I probably would use them again. Once you establish where the guidelines are, you know what you're going to get.
Description of Work: Native Design & Restoration Landscapes did some hardscaping and some mulch. They rebuilt my flagstone patio, installed a 90 foot stone path, did some drainage work and rebuilt my herb bed. They dug out some liriope and put in 40 little hollies down my front sidewalk as a hedge. They put in a planter in the back, a shrub, seeded where they tore it all up and did some mulching.

We found Native Design on Angie's List and liked what we saw from their reports. When he came to our home for an estimate, he was very professional, informative, offered references before I asked and very cost competitive. He was very prompt at answering questions either through e-mail or phone calls. We are very pleased with the outcome of his work.

Description of Work: They arrived to give an estimate. After viewing what needed to be done, they said they would e-mail an estimate. We never received an e-mail, and my call to them to ask why was ignored. We have an older home in a rural area and have had no landscape work done since the 90's. Response from Native Design & Hardscape
The customer was not given an estimate for our services because she was not willing to pay for our DESIGN services. Native Design is more than willing to provide general estimates free of charge, but we cannot provide our service for design at zero cost. We regret that the customer did not understand this.

They came out 4 or 5 weeks before that. I had 5 different companies come out and give me an estimate for a paver and patio driveway estimate and they were right in line with everybody else. They were the most pleasant landscapers that we I had come here. They were very professional and was the only company that gave me a complete quote, whereas everybody else had something missing in their plans. It was more like they gave division beyond what we asked them for, so I could see what the picture would look like in stages of other things that they would suggest that I do.

From start to finish Native Design ALWAYS does a great job.
Description of Work: Mr. Dunaway and his staff are always professionals when they are in my home or backyard. We have used Native Design for various projects including laying new sod, planting a line of trees, trimming hedges, laying mulch, general mowing and maintainence. They place close attention to detail, look well groomed, and always work hard at getting the project complete and done well. Not only have we used them for yard work but we recently had Native Design rip out an old brick fireplace and replace it with a stone fireplace. They cut every rock by hand and it looks AMAZING! The work went very well. I had a good idea of what I wanted, and I needed it by a certain time, and he said that he could do that. They started a day later than they needed to, which put things back a day, but they still finished on time. Jacob, the person who came out, did the job, and I enjoyed working with him. There were a couple of changes that were to be made because of some mistakes but they were very easily rectified. The work was finished by the time he said it would be. I don?t know about the price because I haven?t received a bill yet - the estimate was $850. I would use them again in the future.
