DAVES TREE & STUMP SERVICE

DID NOT FINISH THE JOB. I hired Dave's to cut down three trees on one side of my house, cut the trunks into firewood size pieces, and remove the brush. They did a reasonably professional job on these three. While Dave was out, I negotiated separately to have another tree on the other side of my house cut down. I asked for the same on this tree, to have the trunk cut into logs and to remove the brush. When the job was and quot;finished,and quot; one of Dave's kids came to the door asking for the check. My mistake was in handing it over without making sure they'd done what I'd asked. Then I saw that they'd left all the brush from the last tree. I live on the side of a ridge, and half the brush was at the bottom of the yard, the rest in my side yard. I called Dave immediately to say that we had a problem. When Dave came back the next day to get a trailer he'd left, I told him I wanted the brush hauled away. He first told me that I'd agreed that he'd leave the brush for me to clean, then asked for more money to finish the job. I said I couldn't pay him more, but asked if he could at least clear the brush from the side yard. The last time I talked to him on the phone, a week ago, he asked to give him a couple of days to work something out. It's now a week later, and I've had to hire someone else to finish the job. If you hire this guy, write down what you want him to do and have him sign it, then make sure the job's done before you pay. Better yet, hire someone else.

Very satisfactory

We had a little bit of confusion because I wanted it cut to fireplace size but he said he didn't agree to that. We compromised and it all worked out. We did everything verbally and it seemed to be an issue, but I didn't have a problem with him in the past when we had it all written down. He did what he said he was going to do and his price was fair.

Extremely satisfied with their high level of professionalism from start to finish. They brought in a full crew with all necessary equipment and completed the cutting and removal in one day. The following day another employee returned to restore our grounds to pre-existing condition. You'd never know they were here! We've had trees removed in the past, however, I've not seen climbing/cutting talent such as this. The ability to set huge branches/limbs down from 70-80 feet in the air to an area of +/- two (02) feet on the ground--WOW! Definitely a first class outfit.

Something has obviously happened to Dave's Tree Service since we first hired them in March of 2007. They were courteous, reasonably priced, and efficient. I would have easily given them an A rating back then. As a result, we were more than happy to hire them again in October 2009. Bad move. My husband showed the owner all the needed work, including a dead tree hanging over our property from the neighbor (who gave us permission to cut down this tree), and the owner promptly gave us an estimate. When they showed up for a short time and did not finish the job on the agreed day, the owner dropped by that evening to say that rain interfered with their completion of the job, a perfectly acceptable reason--and we appreciated his coming by to explain. On another day they arrived, did the work, and agreed to come the following day to complete the job. On that last day, I called to one worker's attention that the neighbor's tree only had a few limbs taken off and was not cut down. The worker informed me that he "only hauled off the debris" and that I should call the owner about the incomplete work. The owner showed up later, dressed in a suit, since, as he told me, he was on his way to church, and requested I give him a check for the full amount, despite the fact that some work still remained. I explained the we still needed one tree downed, and he quickly promised me that they would return the next Monday to take care of it. Trusting a man on his way to church, I naively paid him the complete amount. The next morning he called to ask me exactly where my credit union was so he could go there to cash my check. I found this odd but told him how to find my credit union....And that is the last contact I have had with David Simmons. I have called the business and his cell phone numerous times and left messages with no response. I even included messages about professional and ethical responsibilities. When my friends said I would never hear from him again, I assured them that his last comment before heading to church was his promise to complete the work. In frustration I left a final message, saying I would not call again but that I felt obliged to leave negative feedback on Angie's List, a move I really did not want to take. The irony of all this? To complete the job would not have taken more than an hour, perhaps less. The wood did not even have to be hauled away. My neighbor and I were taking care of that. As a result of not finishing my job, Mr. Simmons has lost two jobs for friends of mine who want no part of someone who does not complete a job. I have never had to give anyone a failing grade before. Should you hire Dave's Tree Service, DO NOT PAY ANYTHING UNTIL ALL WORK IS DONE TO SATISFACTION. I will not be hiring them again under any circumstances.

Relatively quick response to request for estimate (couple days). Owner's son came over and gave 2 estimates- one to cut down trees and haul away ($700) and one to "cut down trees, cut logs into about 15" inch fireplace lengths, and branches into easily manageable lengths" so we could clean up ourselves ($400.00). We went with the latter. Made appointment with owner for first thing Friday, Sept 4th for around 8:30a.m. Owner and son did not show up until around 2:30 that afternoon. Apparently they had taken on an another job or had not finished with a former one. Worked part of the day agreeing to come back at a later date to complete the job (which worked for me since I had a previously set appointment and had to leave). His son showed up by himself the following day and it went down hill from there. The son was obviously more concerned with the money than doing a good job. Shortly after starting, he came knocking at my door asking if I was going to pay by check or cash and, since I said I was going to pay by check, wanted to know if I would drive to an ATM and withdraw it out in cash instead since the banks would be closing early Saturday and he didn't have any money. I politely refused but did offer to give him about $100 in cash and the balance in check which he refused. He went back to work but returned shortly asking me to call my bank to see what time it closed. I did. He went back to work again, running out of oil for his chain saw which I then provided. He then asked if he left his equipment there as security, if I would give him his full check before he was done so he could go cash it. Looking back now, being the idiot I was, I gave it to him because it appeared he was close to finishing anyways. He then decided he would just finish up and then rush to the bank. As he finished up on the other side of the privacy fence I began walking through his finished work. I discovered several sections of branches that had not been cut all the way through but worst yet, sections of the base of the tree left in about 24-30 inch lengths (easily weighing 200-250#') and left where they fell- in this case, my flower bed. The owner's son then reappeared around the corner of the fence headed for his truck saying he was now out of gas for his saw but finished anyways. I stopped him and called him back to show him what I had discovered. Obviously agitated and in a hurry to make it to the bank, he said that is all he agreed to do originally. I asked him if he had to be kidding and how was I going to move these 200+# monsters- he said something to the effect- "oh, they'll move" and proceeded to his truck. I told him I would be giving his dad a call to which he replied- "There are plenty of people in Knoxville, one bad complaint isn't going to matter". Needless to say I was furious and immediately called the company's number receiving the same voice mail I did originally when I first contacted them. I told the owner I wanted to talk to him "half about the job his son did and half about his son period". That was 9 days ago and I have yet to hear from him. In the meantime, I have gone ahead and cleaned up both sides of the fences cutting up the branches they failed to cut (leaving some 16+ feet in length) and hauling it all away with the exception of those 200# pieces which I will have to get later. I also discovered several smashed rose bushes and the cages they grew in where he had allowed the larger branches to fall where they may. His son had made the comment to me that mine were the first trees he ever climbed that normally someone else did the climbing- Nice to know now!

David met me for estimate at my convenience. He was punctual and professional. He gave me a reasonable estimate for the work. Crew showed up promptly the next morning and completed the job quickly. His crew removed all small branches and debris. Per my request he left all the larger limbs in neat piles to be used for firewood. Overall excellent work - they removed all debris and left the site neat. Would most definitely use this service again.

The crew showed up on time. Three of the cotton wood trees were close to power lines, and the utility company was called to "down" the lines so the trees could be cut. The utility company was 2 hours late. Dave's crew kept themselves busy readying the trees to be cut, sharpening their power tools, etc. The trees were cut down, and the debris removed without delay. The crew was very courteous, but got down to business when the time came. They took great care with my property.

The overall experience was very satisfying.

He cut some of the branches up for me so that I could use it for firewood. He took all of the mess with him when he left. He was very professional. I would recommend him.

He did a very good job. His price was reasonable.

They were very timely and professional. The work area was very clean when they left. Their prices were very competitive and they were the fastest to come out, give us a quote, and get to work.

They were the most responsive of the companies that we called to give an estimate. he estimates ranged from $4000 down to $900, so they were toward the high side of the middle. They gave the estimate and followed up with a call. They called when they were on their way. There were a total of 7 men and one woman, and each had different jobs. The owner that we had spoken with was on site and working along with the others. We have had to have three other large oaks removed over the span of 30 years, and we are always concerned about safety. These worked very carefully, but also quickly. It took about 6 1/2 hours from start to finish. They didn't have the finesse that some other companies have shown in that not all of the pieces fell exactly where I think they meant for them too, but none were in danger of harming property or personnel. We got the quality of service that we paid for. The contract said that they would haul the pieces away and leave our property free of tree litter. What actually happened was that, after they began work, our across-the-street neighbor made a deal with them that if they would bring some of the big branches over to his side yard so that he could cut them for firewood, they could put the rest of the wood and tree litter in his ditch. They did that, and we got our clean property and the neighbor got his firewood.

WONDERFUL! We set up a consultation appointment and he showed up ON-TIME and was very professional. He did a great job and removed the stumps then ground them down well below the soil line. After multiple other companies did not show up or refused to come back to do the work after giving us a quote; this man was a breath of fresh air. He actually gave us an excellent quote and did the work immediately. Our neighbors came over during the process and he ground some stumps for them that day also!

Mr. Simmons came to give me an estimate for removing several trees. While at the house, he noted some heavy limbs that were hanging over our new play-set. We had not noticed that they could potentially cause damage to the set or injury if they fell. At this time, we decided to postpone removing the other trees and just have the limbs cut. Mr. Simmons and a helper came very soon after I called and were very efficient about the job. This price did not include cleaning up the limbs, but the men did cut them into manageable sizes for us to move.

After they received my message, they showed up, gave an immediate estimate, and performed work the next day.

This company does fantastic work. I was very satisfied with all the work that they did. I called them up and they responded in a fair amount of time. I was simply amazed by their politeness and the respect that they had for my property. We have used them in the past as well and I have recommended them to my friends for the great work that they do.
