Response from Concord Watch Clock & Jewelry Center
Dear (Member names removed), You brought your clock in to be checked out on August 15th, 2013. The Umpah Band Vintage cuckoo was checked out. The German Movement in the case was extremely dirty and rusted as well as all the bellow wiring. The music movement is just as bad. The music governor is shot and it needs a new set of bellows. The case needs parts glued as well. Parts for clocks of this nature are not found on a shelf at Wal-Mart. Before I give an estimate, I track down the parts to make sure they are obtainable and at what price. I cannot possibly give you a proper estimate unless I do this and I refuse to guess or give you a cost I cannot honor and raise it like other places do. I called you on September 12, 2013, I always note on the customers tickets the contacts made and what the result is. I wanted to give you your estimate of repair however I reached a message machine. I will, at this time, admit..... I had not seen my family in 19 years and decided to go on vaction to see them I, needless to say, don't take personal time as I work "around the clock" (no pun intended). My husband and I are dedicated to our work, our clock customers and their clocks. We have been doing this work for 30 years now. I left on my vacation on Thursday, Sept. 19th and drove home Monday, Sept 30th, 2013 I was back at work this monring bright and early and find myself at 1:41 a.m. still working, writing you. I had not heard back from you about your estimate at this point. On the phone message machine, I stated I was going away and for how long and asked my customers to be patient and I would get back to every single one of them in a few days from returning home. There was no message from you however in those calls. I always try to call my customers back if they call however, it would be stupid for me not to. I don't advertise and rely strictly on word of mouth from happy customers. I attempted to get a price on replacing the cuckoo movement fully with an exact replacement movement. I like to explore all options for my customers. When I give an estimate, I give you every option and you can then make an educated decision on what to do from there. After checking however and getting the costs for the new movement, I found out that it is obsolete now and cannot be obtained. To do all the work I mentioned at the beginning of this submission, ultrasonically service both movements (cuckoo/time movement and the music movement), polish all wheel pivots by hand to get rid of rust, replace the music governor and replace the bellows and do some case work.... the estimate is $285.00 plus tax and is certainly worth doing... these old umpah band cuckoos are selling for quite a bit now. The new ones go up to $800 + as well. The older vintage piece is so much better though than the new one. Well, I will await to hear from you. I don't want to put your phone number on here publicly but is it possible I don't have the correct phone number if you didn't get my message on the 12th? I am sorry you feel I don't communicate well. I try to give out a letter to customers when they bring clocks in. I did not assist (Member name removed) when he brought the clock in. J.D. did and I do not know if he gave you the letter or not. It explains that estimates can take several weeks if we are locating parts for the repairs, etc. I do all the work for the Clock Peddler in Gatlinburg and Dollywood and stay very busy but love all my clocks and my customers, as stated, my husband L.J. and I have worked on clocks for 30 yrs now. When an estimate is o.k.'d, I may have your clock for 2-3 months depending on how the movement responds and how quickly the time keeping regulates. I have a tough quality control and want my work to be right. I don't call inbetween.... once o.k.'d, you would not hear from me again until the clock is finished or if the estimate had to change from what we discussed for some reason. I don't usually allow that to happen though. Most of the time I eat the difference and fix the clock... So again, I am sorry you feel the way you do. Maybe I spent too much time tracking for a new movement or parts for your existing movement to get proper pricing. Then I went away, that I am not sorry for since everyone is entitled to vacation time each year... but please do accept my apologies. if you feel you want to have the work done, please call me on my cell number at (386) 453-6604 call me either way as if you don't want to move ahead, I need to put it all back together again. It is certainly worth doing, from the value standpoint... Thank you. Respectfully, Joanie LaTorre
