I sent my fiancé's watch to Mr. Carpenter in mid-December. He sent me an estimate for $0 while he ordered parts for the watch. Fast forward 2.5 months and no work was ever done on the watch. Mr Carpenter kept it all of this time, never worked on it, never gave us an estimate for costs or when it would be ready, never responded to several emails. When I called to ask when it would be ready, I could hear Mr. Carpenter in the background saying, "Tell her I'll call her back," which seemed evasive to me. I began to worry that we'd never get this watch back, which has huge sentimental value for my fiancé. When I asked on the phone if someone could make sure to call me back since it had been 2.5 months and he wasn't responding to my emails, Mr Carpenter told me to "just come and get it." So again, he had the watch for 2.5 months, didn't touch it, didn't ever tell us what his plan was for it. I hate to say it, but this guy is very shady and I would recommend protecting your valuable watches by taking them elsewhere. Stay far, far away from Carpenter Clock repair.

Mike Carpenter "fixed" the clock, charged me $125 and left. The clock never kept accurate time and despite 20+ calls to Mike Carpenter, he has not gotten back to me. By the way, he closed his shop in Knoxville - not much of a surprise given his terrible service. AVOID THIS GUY!

I have a German box clock given to me by my parents. The clock kept good time but the chimes are off. I took it to Carpenter's in mid-January, explaiNed the problem and he told me it would be March before he could repair it. I paid $25 down and he said he would call me when it was ready. The last week of March I started calling the store to check on my clock and called several times during the next week. I always got the answering machine and each time left my name,.number and the reason I was calling. No one ever returned my calls. So in April I stopped by the shop. There was a power outage in the area and the woman working in the store said as soon as the power came back on, she would find my clock, see where they were on the repairs and call me. Again, no one called me. I stopped in the store again last week and Mr Carpenter told me it wasn't ready, they were getting ready to close the Kingston Pike store but assured me my clock would be ready this week, and he would call me. I hadn't heard anything from him by the following Thursday, so I again went by his store. There was a Uhaul parked in front of the store being loaded with clocks from the store. I went in and asked for my clock. He said it still wasn't ready,.but I told him that was fine, I just wanted my clock. He gave ito me and apologized but didn't offer to refund the initial $25 dollars I had paid. He may be an excellent clock repair person, but his service is horrible and unprofessional.

Description of Work: I wanted to find a winding key to fit a friend's grandfather clock. The shop's owner and staff were very helpful. Who knew there were so many key types?! They sold me the key they thought would work but told me they would exchange it if need be. The key did work. They were very friendly and helpful even though they were only making $10 off of me. I have 2 antique clocks that need repairs and I will be returning to this shop.

NOT GOOD
Description of Work: He had my German Cuckoo clock from 02/16/15 until 09/15/15, and had not even looked at it in that time. When I called him somewhere around 09/15 to see if it was ready, he gave me a sob story about ehy he had not looked at it yet, snd then he said he would get right on it. I waited another 2 weeks and called him to see how it was going. Again, he said he was working by himself and had not had a chance to look at it and, again told me he would get right on it. He called me a couple of days later and told me that he had cleaned the clock real good and that he found the problem was that it came from the factory with the chains not being in the center of the holed. He said he would plug the old holes and drill new ones. He ended up keeping my clock until 10/16/15 told me it was ready. When I went to pick it up, he started it and it ran for about 10 seconds. I became very upset and told him to just give me my clock. Mike wouldn't let me have my clock until I wrote him a check for $248.13. I took the clock home and hung it on the wall and tried to get it going. It would run just long enough for the pendulum to stop. I tried everything to get the clock to run. Finally, I called Mike. He told me several things to do to get it running. Nothing worked. I could hear the pendulum wire scraping across metal inside the clock. Mike had bent the pendilum wire in front of me before I left his place, when I brought the clock home. He told me to bring it back and he would adjust something on the inside of the clock. I took it back, I brought it home, and it ran until 11/30/15. I took it to another shop. The clock had not been touched at all as far as cleaning by Mike, even though he told me he gave it a good cleaning inside and out. The new people told me it needed a bearing. I called Mike to see if he would fix it, since I had paid him $248.13. He got mad and told me he wanted nothing else to do with me and my stupid clock; that he was erasing me from all contact with him. So, I had the new clock man to fix it. It needed new inside works, so I had it fixed and paid them and it worked as soon as I put it on the wall. When I took it to Mike Carpenter's shop told me

Here's my story... I stopped at the Carpenter Clock and Watch Repair shop on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 to talk to someone about my grandfather clock. It had stopped running. I talked to Mike, and we set up an appointment for him to come to my house the following Thursday (October 1) in the 8:30 to 9:30 time frame to service the clock. Sometime close to 9:30 that day, I got a call from John saying he was coming instead of Mike. John asked for directions to my house, and since he was still in Knoxville and I live in Oak Ridge, 9:30 didn't happen. John arrived closer to 10:30. He serviced my clock and left it running. I was really happy! But about 3:30 that same afternoon, the middle chain and weight fell completely off the clock. There's quite the noise when a weight falls off a grandfather clock! I called John immediately and told him what had happened. He told me he couldn't come back out that day but would call me back that evening and set up a time on either the next day or over the weekend to come back. Great! But I got no call back either Friday, Saturday or Sunday (October 2, 3, or 4). So I called John again on Monday, October 5. He said he was currently on a job but would call me back later in the day to set up an appointment. No call came. I called John again on Tuesday, October 6 and Wednesday, October 7. Same story - I'm on a job but will call you back later. Same story - no call. On Tuesday, October 13, I went back to Carpenter Clock and Watch Repair shop. The plan was to talk to Mike about what was happening. Mike wasn't there, but John was. We agreed that he would come back out on Monday, October 19 at 5:00 to work on the clock again. Monday, 5:00 - no John; 6:00 - no John; 7:00 - no John. Why am I not surprised?!! When I got out of the shower sometime after 8:00, my husband said John had called and said he thought he was supposed to come that day but wasn't really sure. He said he'd come "tomorrow" (that would be Tuesday, the 20th). My husband didn't agree to that. I didn't call John back until Monday, October 26. Yet again, he said he was on a job and would call me back later that day to set up a time to come back and work on my clock. And yet again, he did not call. Here's the bottom line: I'm tired of calling; they completely wore me out! Carpenter's Clock and Watch Repair was paid $152.95. The clock they serviced is not only NOT running, it is now in several pieces.
Description of Work: Carpenter Clock and Watch Repair was hired to service a grandfather clock that my father built and that means a lot to me. I answered the "services performed by the provider" question with a No. To be clear, they did come out and service the clock on the scheduled day. The clock ran for only about 3 hours, however, so to my way of thinking, they did not perform the services I contracted for and also paid for. And still haven't!

Dropped the clock off in May of this year and never heard from him again. We almost forgot about it!! Called this morning to find out what was going on and the woman who answered couldn't find the clock, that it got lost. Mr. Carpenter, I believe, called back telling us he had found the clock, that it had been "forgotten". He offered to start working on it immediately but I told him I was coming to get it and the $25 deposit we had left. He told us the $25 deposit was not refundable as indicated on our receipt. Upon arriving, I told Mr. Carpenter that I could understand that the deposit would be nonrefundable if he could not fix the clock, however he never even tried to fix it. Mr. Carpenter said that he had looked at it and I told him that he looked at it when he walked by it. He finally gave me back the deposit. As a collector of several styles of clocks I would have given him plenty of business had he repaired this one. After this experience I will find another clock repair business.

We have been upgrading the computer system and reorganizing the shop to overcome this problem of tracking jobs. We have never "lost" a clock in 37 years. I did underestimate the time it would take to finish the job. An estimate is just an estimate. No "promise by" date was ever issued. I rarely ever do that. She still should have been contacted. I am working to fix that problem also by reorganizing the shop. I'm sorry she is unhappy. Mike Carpenter

Called and made appmt to have my dad?s grandfather clock setup in my house. A service date was given which was both timely and reasonable. Representative from Carpenter Clock showed up on time. He set up the clock which is a Howard Miller GF clock. It has not worked in years. But the rep. quickly determined what was wrong and fixed the problem. (the gears were not in sync.) He oiled and tightened up every thing on the clock, showed me how to wind and set the time, how to adjust the clock?s timing so that it would keep good time, and how to change chimes etc.. He had forgotten to bring an electronic device that would measure the timing as the pendulum went back and forth, bu this did not become a big issue since manually setting the timing was not hard. just took a few times adjusting a nut on the bottom of the pendulum to get the timing right. Friendly and competent service was given and I would recommend Carpenter Clock and Watch Repair to anyone who has a similar need.

Our 1920's grandfather clock stopped suddenly. I called Carpenter's. They came immediately...the day I called or the day after, I can't remember, but it was fast. They checked the clock carefully. Two men. I had used Mr. Carpenter many years ago on both this clock when I moved it and another old clock in the 80's when I moved it. He has been in the business for many years and knows what he is doing. He took it out of the case and suggested that it needed a thorough cleaning and overhaul. I believed him because of it's age and in my memory had not been overhauled even when moved from another state during the 70's to my mother's home. It had merely been adjusted from the rigors of the move. Mr. Carpenter required three months to thoroughly clean and overhaul the clock. Three months later, my clock runs better than ever. The sound is low and soothing, and he showed me how to slow it down or speed it up so that it keeps time as well as the electric ones. After he reinstalled it, he left his card with three phone numbers and said call me if you have any problem. I had to call him. He returned to the house to make a small adjustment which fixed the problem, and his man called two days later to be sure all was well and that I was happy with the work. Carpenter's is old fashioned honorable and I recommend him to any clock lover and for any clock job. He does require time. We were without our clock for three months, but the old clock needed cleaning and overhauling and we're happy with the result and the printed information he left with us about old clocks and how to take care of them. I recommend these fellows without one hesitation.
Description of Work: My husband heard the clock pendulum which normally ticks gently, clacking loudly and then it stopped. Scary. He unhooked the pendulum and we called Carpenter's. Mr. Carpenter and his colleague came promptly (within 24 hours) and concluded that among the problems, the old clock needed a thorough cleaning and various repairs. He showed me several points that needed repair. He removed the clock, weights, pendulum and carefully packed them in boxes. He said that he would need three months. We accepted the time since old clocks are tricky, but we missed hearing the comforting old chimes. I believe it was worth the wait.

We did not know much about the clock. We took the the clock in and got an estimate and some details about how old it was and how much it was worth. I called to see if the clock could be finished earlier than estimated and they were very helpful. They brought the clock to my home and hung it on the wall and leveled it. More of it's functions were explained.

Mr. Carpenter came for a free estimate. We had two clocks worked on. However, we became concerned when he advised us to replace some of original workings of a 200 year old English case clock that had been rebuilt by a European expert 10 years earlier. We did not take his suggestion but had that clock repaired by another individual and it only needed cleaning and minimal adjustments. That was a few years ago and the case clock is keeping perfect time. I'm glad we did not replace the original parts! The cuckoo clock stopped working within months and we did not go back to him. We've found another reputable clock repair person that has provided good service .
