They gave me a very low bid for painting the trim on my house, and I guess that should have alerted me of potential for trouble. But in the end they paid themselves a somewhat decent wage around here: $15/hour. They came on the day they said they would come. They bought the paint, and they got the right kind. On the first day they went up ladders with paint brushes and buckets and started to paint the windows without removing the screens. I insisted that they remove the screens. Then I noticed that they were painting the windows shut. I insisted that they open the windows and paint the sills. Then I noticed that they were not cleaning or scraping the windows before painting. The windows had peeling paint and some areas, where wood needed, to be filled in before painting. I told them to clean and scrape the wood before painting. I gave them rags and cleaning stuff to clean the sills, and I did some of this myself. My partner showed them how to scrape the peeling paint off. But, each time they came to a new window, we had to do this all over again. It was as if they were refusing to open the windows and scrape the old paint off. Finally, I told them that I didn't understand why they were refusing to open the windows and scrape the old paint off. This was when they told me that I was already demanding too much of them by requiring them to remove the screens. In the end I sort of gave up and just paid them and made them go away.
Description of Work: The painters wanted to paint the trim around the windows without removing the screens, or scraping the old paint away, or opening the windows. I made them remove the screens (I helped) but then I had to tell them repeatedly to open the windows before painting them, and to clean and scrape the window sills before painting. No matter how many times I told them to do this, they didn't do it unless I came to the window. They were painting and specifically told them to open that window and clean and scrape it. When I complained on the second day about the fact that I had asked them repeatedly to open the windows and clean them before painting, one of them got mad and said that I was already asking them too much by requiring them to remove the screens. I asked them if they had ever painted a house before. They said they had painted "million dollar houses." (Mine is not, by a long shot.) I said, "So, you paint the windows shut on million dollar houses?" They said yes. Apparently they think this is normal. After they left I had trouble opening and closing the windows, but fortunately a friend helped me use a putty knife to pry the windows open.
