They were great. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted -- just had a photo of what I had in mind. They made recommendations and the finished product was even better than I had imagined. All the guys who worked at the house were pleasant and professional. I will be calling these guys for anything that comes up in the future!

After some investigation, Glen's crew found that the source of some mysterious water damage in my master bathroom to be a lack of waterproofing on the wooden substructure supporting the tiled "bench" in my master bathroom shower stall. The underlying wood was rotten and the water had supported some fungal growth on the underside of my house beneath the shower stall. Glen's crew fixed everything: Replaced the rotten wood, cleared out the fungus, re-tiled and repainted the shower. Since they had to remove the glass walls of the shower stall to re-tile, I got them to install frameless glass and update the fixtures in my master bathroom. Now it looks better than ever before! The work took about a month to complete from start to finish. Glen was a pleasure to work with -- very professional and patient. I respect Glen's integrity and commitment to getting the job done the right way. He stuck to his original estimate for the job even when some parts turned out to be more expensive than he'd planned. I will always try to hire Glen for any substantial home improvements or repairs I need done in the future.
Description of Work: Glen and his crew helped diagnose a mysterious source of water damage in my master bathroom. Ultimately I hired Glen to remodel my master bathroom shower and update the fixtures.

Although I know Glen's company usually does much larger projects out in Franklin, Wess came to help with this small project out in East Nashville. They'd done a few projects at my home in the past, and Glen has consistently been responsive, kind and friendly. Wess was absolutely great, the work looks really good, and the price was fair. I sincerely can't compliment Glen and the rest of the company enough -- they have a level of integrity and skill I haven't come across in any other contractor. I can't imagine having another company work on my home, and I sincerely hope I never have to. Glen and Co., your work and professionalism is more than appreciated.

If you have a small project that you want done fairly quickly, do not call Mr. Hutchison, because he is apparently very busy. He did not take the time to sketch the project as did the contractor that I ended up using. If I have a large project in the future, I may call Mr. Hutchison--he does have very good ratings from other who have used him.
Description of Work: Mr. Hutchison came by to give an estimate three weeks after I contacted him. When he arrived, he tried to change my plans and make the project less involved. I ended up going with a different contractor who performed the project perfectly. The other contractor took the time to develop plans on how the project would look upon completion. Mr. Hutchison is apparently very busy and does not want small projects. See below.

This report is troubling and confusing. I will try to address the disappointments the customer mentions. First of all, we perform small projects all the time and enjoy them. However, we have to work the smaller projects in around the larger ones. If we are in the middle of a kitchen remodel, bath remodel or an addition we cannot simply pull off until it is turned over to other tradesman in order to keep the project moving. I try to be very upfront with all of our customers about our need to place our priority on the large projects and work in the smaller projects as we are able. I arrived at his house before our 9 am appointment but only received a “C” for punctuality. As far as the low grade for responsiveness is concerned I usually schedule new appointments for a week or two out, rarely three weeks out as mentioned in the review. This 3-week-wait could have been the case but usually only occurs if there are scheduling conflicts. Although I would like to look at new projects the following day, I need to honor our current customers by focusing on their on-going jobs and leave room in my schedule for taking care of existing business. I did call (deleted member name) a few days after we met and left a message. After not hearing back from him I phoned again and spoke with him about his project. From what I can remember this was a pleasant conversation leaving no indication of the disappointment he expressed in the review. While there is a chance that he did not get my first message, I find it peculiar that he gave me a “C” for responsiveness. There were 3 items that needed to be completed and the mention of a wall with built-ins. I gave him a price on all three within a week. The first and primary item he wanted completed was to close in his dining area with a wall and French doors with special trim around the door to create an office. He showed me a detailed picture of the trim his wife wanted around the door. The trim that his wife wanted around the door was typical of a 1930’s era house with plinths, header and crown. I mentioned to him that using the standard trim already in his house would be less expensive but I never tried to change his plans to make the project less involved, I merely wanted to let him of the significant cost difference. Cost-saving suggestions are usually welcomed by customers and I am sorry if this suggestion offended or bothered him. I was not asked to provide a sketch for the door and trim nor was there a need for a sketch as he had one already. The second item he wanted completed was to patch and paint the wall in the new office area. The third item he wanted completed was to install a subway tile back-splash above the kitchen counters. It is my practice to first supply a rough cost to the customer and then, if they would like to proceed, have a designer or architect draw the plans or design. I can provide simple sketches upon request, but usually this is done when we are in agreement to move forward with the project, not at the first meeting. However, the only item that (deleted member name) really needed a sketch for was already drawn. I do hope to work for (deleted member name) at some point in the future and will be more sensitive to the items he mentioned in the report.

We checked Angie's list and decided to go with Glenn Hutchinson based on his excellent reviews. So glad we did! Glenn is a great guy and an extremely knowledgeable and honest contractor. Glen scheduled time to meet and discuss the project. We did not need it completed in any hurry so he set a loose time, a few weeks out, to meet again with the person who would do the actual work. The second meeting and tentative installation date were set and work began in our house as agreed. The installation and painting were accomplished over a 3 day period. Jeremy spread tarps and cleaned up each day before he left. The final product is exactly what we wanted / had in mind. Great job.

Description of Work: I had Mr.Hutchinson come out to give me price for doing a small kitchen cabet. He was on time a very nice fellow. He gave me a ball park Figure that was about 2k.This did not include a top.The person who built me a custom cabnet with a tile top also installed the cabnet and hauled away the old cabnet. His bill was $800.The one Mr. Huthinson was going to use was a off the shelf cabnet. I also discussed, in general terms ,remodel of my bath. He told me that his normal price for a bathroom remodel was 30k. Again that was almost 2 times what I had paid to have my other bath gutted and re-done. Since I did not hire him I can not comment on the quality of his work.

I am sorry about the misunderstanding on the estimate. [Member's name removed] and his wife were nice and I enjoyed my visit with them. My estimate actually did include an allowance of $800 ($67 per foot) for a granite top that measured approximately 5’ long x 2’ deep which translates into roughly 12 square feet with a 4” backsplash included. Here is a breakdown of the estimate given: Remove existing pantry cabinet and haul away or place in garage. Purchase, deliver and install a 3’ base cabinet. Built-in shelf for a small fridge to the side of the cabinet. Move up an electrical outlet to counter height. Paint cabinet and shelf. Install granite counter. Install hardware on cabinet. ______________ $2000 I am not sure of what all was completed for the $800 mentioned in the review aside from the cabinet and tile top but in the end it sounds like [Member's name removed] received a fair amount of work for a good price. In regards to the bathroom [Member's name removed]mentioned in the review I believe I said that most of our master bath remodels cost between 20k and 30k as a general rule of thumb. This was intended to be a very general price as there are so many decisions that have to be made prior to a quote being given. I usually bring up the cost of a typical bath remodel to help a potential understand how much remodels cost. The other bathroom [Member's name removed] showed me that he had completed for $15,000 was a hall bath, not a master bathroom with distinct differences between the two. The estimate that I gave to [Member's name removed] was a verbal estimate only. A written estimate would have cleared up the confusion but I was not asked to give one. At the end of our phone conversation I was certain that he understood the cost and that he would be in contact with me if he wanted to proceed with the project or if he wanted a written estimate. This is common practice for me to look at a project, give a verbal quote and give a written estimate if asked or before starting on any work. Again I am sorry for the misunderstanding and will try to avoid any misunderstandings in the future.

This job could not have gone better. It has been 5 months since we moved back into the house and not a day goes by that I don't stop for a moment and marvel at the work Glen's crew did. I never imagined my old bachelor pad could have looked this good. When we decided to do the project, I got 5 estimates. Glen's was dead center in terms of price with 2 higher and 2 lower. Glen was the quickest to respond, asked all the right questions, and gave off a really good impression so we went with him. We thought it was a little unusual when he said he almost never signs a contract with those he works for, but we went with it and there was never a point that we wished we had a contract. He is just so honest and straightforward it is really unnecessary. After hearing horror stories about working with GCs, I was prepared for the worst but our experience was the exact opposite. Glen and every single member of his crew was so friendly, so knowledgeable, so approachable, so polite, so eager to please and so skilled it was almost hard to believe. I was very particular about how I wanted things and not once did they even give a hint of frustration over my pickiness. They started the project when promised and completed it in the original time frame despite numerous "surprises" that revealed themselves behind the walls and under the floors once the demolition began. Communication was excellent for the whole 4 month duration of the project and Glen and Ben made sure I was always getting just what I wanted. The project did go over budget by about 25%, which was evenly divided among "surprise" work that only revealed itself once demo began, add-ons that I requested after the work began, and underestimation in the original quote. This final portion of the overage is the only area for improvement I see for Glen, though this was a very big job on a very old house so I understand it is hard to give a completely accurate estimate. That said the price I paid was plenty fair for the expert craftsmanship and massive amount of custom work that Glen did at my house - this incredible transformation was worth every penny. Glen's team is small and almost all are carpenters, but each has their own specialty in addition, be it tiling, HVAC, structural, etc. The only portions of this huge job he contracted out were the drywall work, plumbing, electric, painting, and shower glass. The subs that did this work were excellent too. Throughout the job, Glen's team took care to preserve the historic nature and value of the house by salvaging and reusing original materials, customizing new materials to match existing, and using period-appropriate design elements. The result is a seamless transition between the original portions of the house and Glen's careful re-creations. So in closing, I could not be happier with Glen and his team and the work they did. It is great to know such an honest, fair, skillful guy with such a great team assembled. I would not hesitate to highly recommend him to anyone. We will be contacting Glen again soon for some more work we want done at the house

It sometimes takes a little while to get work performed, but the end results are worth the wait.
Description of Work: Glen and his colleagues have worked at our home quite a few times on different projects. They recently repaired/replaced some rotten wood on windows in our home and did an excellent job. In the past, Glen has also helped us with roof repairs and exterior painting. The workers that Glen has sent to our home are always kind, professional and respectful. When repairing our roof, I was unhappy with the color of shingles that the worker chose to try to match our existing shingles. Once I let Glen know I was unhappy, he quickly worked to remedy the situation and got new shingles that matched perfectly. He did not charge me to correct the problem. Glen is intelligent, knowledgeable, and a great communicator.
We bought a late 50's to early 60's ranch style home in the Crieve Hall area and it need a good bit of maintenance because the house was vacant almost 2 years prior to our moving in. It also needed a good bit of updating. Called Glen for an estimate on the repairs from the home inspection. The man we bought the home from was out of state and would not be able to take care of them so we went ahead and planned on taking care of it ourselves, with him paying in the form of closing costs, of course. So, not having a clue who to call we joined Angies List and found GLen Hutchison because of all the high ratings he had. We emailed him through the contact information provided on Angies List and he called the same day. Set up a time for him to come look at what we needed and he was there exactly when he said he would be. He looked over the list and without really having to think about it he was able to tell me exactly what we were in for, which was not bad. So we scheduled the repairs. His electrician and plummers were there as scheduled and took care of everything exactly as Glen said they would be. I honestly could not imagine how it could have gone any smoother. He did such a great job we got him to give an estimate on the updating we wanted. The floor plan we had and the floor plan we wanted to have when all renovation were over were a very unclear on our part because we didnt have a very good vision of what it would look like. We talked it over with Glen without details and he was able to give very helpful advice. We talked it out and came up with a plan. We got a couple of estimates and one was really close to Glen's but we went with Glen based on the repair work he did and we have never regretted that decision. (Glen's was lower, BTW, just really close to the other). Again, he detailed exactly what we talked about and gave the estimate in writing and told us when he wouldl be able to start and when he expected to finish. Glen actually started a little earlier than he thought he would (which was perfect for us) and he finished right when he said he would and his estimate compared to the actual bill honestly was almost exactly as estimated. Maybe, literally, $100 or $200 different, and when the budget was about $40,000 you really cant get much closer. This really was like working with a close personal friend. I would call, text, or email Glen really early in th e morning and I think he always called me b ack before 9 AM that day. I left keys for anyone that was working for Glen with absolute confidence and they NEVER breached any trust. One guy even brought in the trash can from the curb on trash day and also offered to take the dogs out one day I wasnt able to get there. They really are great guys, all of t hem. Lowell did the electric work and his detail was unbelievable. He doesnt miss a thing. John did the drywall and framing. Where the main loadbearing wall of the entire home was removed, John patched the ceiling in a way that you would never know anything was ever th ere. Very smooth, no waves and no stray bubble or anything. Looks like it was never there to begin with. Jeremy did the wood trim work and it is just as clean as it was when it was built originally, I am sure. Ben did the tile and the compliments are still coming. Joe did the hardwood floor refinishing where the walls were removed. I had no idea it could look so seamless. He matched original 1" hardwoods that were put down in 1959 and you cant tell it at all. Zach was there to help out with the big jobs and he was just as friendly and helpful as the others. Cant remember the plummers names but they were in and out almost without notice. Very good job all of them. I can promise you that if I EVER have any work I need done on my house Glen will be the first, and only, person I Will call because I Know that if he is in charge of it, it will be done very well, on time, on budget, and the way it needs to be done. If you have read this far and are still looking, just stop and call him because he is the guy you need for whatever it is you need.

We are very pleased with the work of Glen Hutchison's company. The workers were always punctual and friendly. The work performed was excellent. We had them do an assortment of odd jobs from replacing the entry door and sidelites to patching water-damaged ceiling drywall. Our deck stairway railing needed better support and they figured out a way to accomplish it. Their pricing was fair and we would definitely use them again.

He came out to do the estimate, even though we were officially a little too far out of his service area. I was glad to have his opinion and input. He is respectful, knowledgeable, and prompt in coming to do the estimate. We ended up not going with him as his estimate was a little high, understandably, to account for the travel involved. If I lived within his normal service range, I wouldn't hesitate to hire.

I had a very good experience with GHI. Glen was arrived on time for the estimate and provided detailed review of the work needed on each window. Glen estimated the materials and about 30 man-hours at $1,900. Based on the estimate I thought it would take 3 to 4 days to complete the project. The first worker arrived right on time the first day to start setting up and I was happily surprised to find out that it was a whole team that showed up to do the work. The windows were repaired and prepped for paint in 1 day because of the number of people that Glen sent. It was great because the weather can be unpredictable in December. Only one person had to show up the second day to paint and they completed the job within a couple hours. The workers were extremely courteous and cleaned up everything. It was truly a stress free repair. The total job came in $150 over the estimate because of man-hours, but Glen discounted the final invoice to the quote. $55 an hour might be a little expensive if it was only a paint job, but the carpentry skills needed to do the windows was well worth the money.
Description of Work: I had 14 windows that need to be scaped and painted. Serveral needed the window sill to be replaced or repaired and several had brickmolding replaced or repaired. After repairs were done, the window sills and brickmolding was painted.

Glen and his crew are without a doubt the neatest contractors we have ever dealt with. The whole crew was meticulous in keeping our home as clean as possible and keeping their tools etc out of the walkways, they were polite and They did what they said they would do - when they said they would do it - and pretty much on budget. They stopped when there was a question about unexpected items. I will be using them again.
