After reading several favorable reviews, I called Matt Brainard to come out to my home to discuss adding a screened porch to the back of my home. Matt seemed very interested in the project and we agreed on a time for him to come to my home. The morning of the appointment, he called with an excuse (which seemed legitimate at the time) about why he couldn't come and needed to reschedule. I told him I understood his situation and we rescheduled for another time. The morning of the second appointment, he showed up 20 minutes late. I gave him the benefit of the doubt (again) and we went on to discuss the project. Matt seemed very knowledgeable about construction, although I sensed that the scope of my project was slightly beyond anything he had done before. However, I believed he would be capable of completing the project. He seemed like quite a perfectionist, which I appreciated. Matt spent plenty of time with me discussing different aspects of what I wanted and what would need to be done. He had another appointment to get to, but he wanted to meet with me again after he had time to do an estimate on what my project would cost. He seemed very interested in the project. It struck me as a little odd that he didn't write down anything we discussed, but I just gave him the benefit of the doubt (yet again) that he just had a sharp mind and could remember everything. Matt and I scheduled another time to meet the following week. He gave me his business card and explained that the website and email address listed were no longer in use, and hadn't been for a couple of years since he and his business partner (the other B in and quot;B and B Design Buildand quot;) had gone their separate ways. The morning of the scheduled meeting, Matt did not show up or call to tell me he wasn't coming. Thirty minutes after the appointment, I tried to contact him to ask if he was still planning to come, and he never responded. He still hasn't called to explain what happened. In summary, Matt is a seemingly nice and talented person, but he appears to lack the professionalism and business skills needed for the job. Perhaps what happened here was a blessing in disguise. I very likely would have hired Matt to do the work, but in hindsight I'm glad it didn't work out and I can continue my search for a builder who is a better fit for my project.

My wife and I had a good size project to expand our deck. I was a professional carpenter years ago and wanted to do this job myself on the weekends...but finally gave out and hired someone else due to the fact that I had no free time. Needless to say I'm a stickler for quality and appreciate the finer aspects of carpentry. Matt Brainerd exceeded expectations and then some. His initial friendly enthusiasm when he was bidding the job was one of the reasons I hired him in the first place. He instantly had ideas\suggestions that he shared and it was immediately obvious to me that this guy was passionate about his work. His price was reasonable and his materials bid list was suprisingly detailed. His skill as a carpenter is matched only by his integrity on the job. Matt won't just measure and cut. He will measure, cut, sand, smooth, router...by the time he's done, a deck with new wood looks like a deck with new wood that might be a candidate for and quot;better homes and gardens.and quot; No, I'm not exaggerating. I just can't imagine that there are very many builders out there like Matt Brainerd. I feel fortunate to have found him. If I should ever have need of a carpenter again, I would go straight to him and no one else. This guy is good.
Description of Work: Expand existing deck; build roof over deck; incorporate concrete pad into deck to support hottub; build aggregate sidewalk coming up to deck.

When we spoke on the phone, Matt made it clear that he would not be able to perform the work for us, as he's nearly 60 miles away from us. However, he was very interested and wanted to come to our home to take a look at what we had in mind and what could actually be done. Matt arrived at our home 15 minutes early, which I make note of as being punctual is important. He greeted us with a warm personality and a true sense of interest in our home project. He took his time in listening to our concerns, not talking over us which so many people tend to do, and presented some very detailed ideas/suggestions. Best of all, he willingly said he would make some calls in efforts to find us a quality contractor in our area that would live up to the same quality standards he has for his own business. Even though Matt will not be performing our work, I have zero doubt if we lived closer to his home base that he would easily have been the one to earn our business. I would strongly suggest that others here take the opportunity to contact Matt for their home projects, as we were impressed and pleased with his knowledge, interest in our project, patience, personality, and punctuality.
Description of Work: I wanted to write this review because people around Middle Tennessee need to know about Matt Brainard. We called from the White House area, as we are interested in having a deck extension built in addition to adding a screened-in porch which involves rather complicated roofing work due to our home having uncommon roof lines.

Matt was recommended to us by a master craftsman with very high standards and Matt lived up to every bit of those standards. He listened very intently to our ideas, offered his ideas on the design, then drew up the plans for it. It was a very collaborative effort and over two iterations we came to a final design that was perfect. Matt was a pleasure to work with and thoroughly enjoys creating a masterpiece that will withstand the test of elements and time. He puts a lot of thought into each cut and prides himself on his precision. He offered many good suggestions on the design and materials but always sought our approval before making any decisions that would impact either the look or the cost of the finished product. We ended up taking most of his suggestions because it was evident that he truly wanted the best result for us. We have already had a handful of people ask us who built our haven by the pool and we proudly tell them, Matt Brainard. We will definitely have him back again for other projects.
Description of Work: Matthew Brainard (615) 347-9760 designed and built a deck around an above ground pool that included a pentagon-shaped covered area similar to a gazebo. The yard is on a slight hill which made the construction a bit more difficult but the end result is a beautiful space that will be used for our family very often. The walkway around the pool is approximately 4' wide with a covered area that is roomy enough for 6 chairs, a table and has a ceiling fan in it. In addition there is about a 12'X16' space that is not covered which is perfect for lounging in the sun by the pool which also connects to the pre-existing second tier deck. Matt used a mixture of wood ranging from southern yellow pine to eastern white pine to cedar to ensure the best quality and longevity for the deck. The project took approximately 7 weeks.

The old concrete just sunk. They were the only people that really listened to me. The other people that I called wanted to put concrete peelers on my wall. They came out twice to give an estimate, and they came out on time. It was perfect. They also got back to me pretty quickly. I will be using them next week. I'm happy with them so far. Last time they had brought out several people. They seemed like down to earth people.

I hired Matt Brainard of Band B to provide a written report and estimate for foundation repairs related to the recent Nashville flood. I had a deadline of providing the quote to the SBA in order to secure the funding for the project. We both had to reschedule the inspection due to busy schedules, but eventually Matt made it out to do the inspection. We had agreed to a price of $150 for the inspection and report. Matt came out and appeared to be very knowledgeable and proposed a couple of solutions that he was going to estimate and get back to me on. The SBA deadline was now about two weeks away. When my deadline was just 4 days a way I had not heard back from Matt. I called him but he was on his way out and said he would call me back ASAP. That was a month ago. I have called and left Matt at least 10 messages asking for a response. On my last message I asked him to refund my $150. I have still received no response. I’m surprised that he wouldn’t return my call. When he was here I explained that I had found him on Angie’s list, so one would assume I would be writing a review. He was on Angie’s list under structural engineer, but he informed me before we made any agreement that he was not an engineer, just a contractor.

They were professional and we liked them personally. However, personally we just didn't feel like they were a match. They didn't have expertise in the area that we needed expertise in so we chose not to go with them. They came and looked at the job carefully, there was good communication following the process and they did know what we wanted. They looked underneath our house and it was so bad that the house should be torn down. I knew that was not the case and I subsequently had a foundation crew come in and replace some things that needed to be replaced. A mold remediation crew got rid of all the mold. I have a lot of knowledge and experience in this area so I'm not the average person that they would do construction for. I think they are professionals and very nice people personally, I'd say it worth meeting them and having them bid. They're legitmate folks running a business and with the right match up they'll do a great job. I just wouldn't use them for something they have no expertise in, but if their doing a job in something that is their area then I think they'll do a great job.

These guys are sticklers for doing the job right. Matt gave me an estimate on removing the affected concrete. When that was removed they realized that the remaining concrete was too thin and a larger section needed to be replaced. I believe he tried to keep the additional cost as low as possible. Matt also noticed a place where my deck sagged, and offered a good price to repair it. It looks great. They found too much gravel under the original concrete, unevenly spread. They took some of the rock and spread it over my driveway. The whole job took several days, time for concrete to set and then for sealer to dry. They were very polite and professional, and willing to explain to me what needed to be done, and offered me options for how it would be done. I plan to use B and B for my next job.
Description of Work: Removed a large section of concrete from the carport. Leveled the subsurface. Poured new concrete. Replaced, stained, and nicely trimmed 2 6x6 columns that support roof. Removed gutter and leaf-guard, cleaned and replaced. Shimmed fascia so that gutter hangs at correct level. Pressure washed entire carport, as well as porch and deck. Sealed carport cement. Also, repaired sagging deck post. Jacked post up and poured cement to raise deck to level.

We were impressed with Matt's professionalism and experience from the beginning. On the day we awarded the contract, we knew he was the right contractor for our job. His ideas and suggestions made the job go quicker and ultimately saved us money. He consistently delivered more than he promised. His craftsmanship and attention to detail made the finished room better and more beautiful than it was originally.

Matt did a great job - so good that it looks like it has always been there. The kitchen has a bay window with a couple of odd inside and outside angles that he got just right and also an arch that was too high to fit the molding all the way across so he had to finesse it to fit. A stair landing coming into another room we had done also had an odd area that he finished well. (Pictures attached). In order to do the hallway, he had to take off one section of molding in the foyer that had just ended at the outside corner with the hall. We almost decided not to do it since we couldn't find molding that matched perfectly. He told us he could do it so it wouldn't show and he was right. He noticed two cracks in our drywall, one near where he was working and one that was not. He offered to fix them for us and did so without adding any cost . We had patched both of these areas before only to have them reappear because they needed the drywall cut out and repair done that we were not able to do - great added value. He cleaned up all the mess and finished when he said he would, which was important as we were having company on the evening of that last day of work. Matt is pleasant and easy to work with. We know him from church and were involved in a more extensive project he did at our son's home so we felt confident hiring him for this job and the outcome proved us right.

The owner first came by to access the project. The company does have a structural engineer that was consulted. Since my husband and I were not afraid to do some of the work ourselves, the company actually told us things we could do to save money (i.e.-demo certain things ourselves before they came in to do the structural part.) Since our home is a ranch, the attic area was accessible over the area with the removed load bearing wall. A beam and support system was added to the attic space. It only took a day. They were very friendly and explained everything that was done.
Description of Work: We were renovating our kitchen & removing 2 interior walls, one of which we knew was load bearing. We hired this company to assess what type of structural support we would need before before removing the walls.

Wife's parents retiring in the area. Looked for housing but decided to add on a handicap accessible 'apartment' to our current home. Used a local architect (DAAD) to design, then bid the job to a couple contractors. Levi and Matt had just begun B and B Design Build and we knew them both through church. This was a big job for their first major collaboration, and they nailed it. The project was 1500 sq ft, with a basement garage beneath. It joins seamlessly with the main house, as the design, window style, even the brick was matched very well. We found Matt, Levi and their crew to be responsive, professional, friendly, hardworking and we've been very satisfied. Even 2+ years later, they will still come out to check something if we have a problem.

I would recommend B and B Design to anyone needing construction on their home. They are honest, hard-working, and take great pride in their work. They are very hands on contractors that were at the job site before 8am everyday (with exception to rain) and montored the entire process. Someone from B and B was always on site to make sure out sourced jobs were done correctly. Very professional and detailed.
Description of Work: B & B Build Design transformed our backyard from a dirt pit to a truly beautiful and relaxing space. We had a deck and purgola built that expands the entire back side of the house. In the process we had the back door moved for a more comfortable flow from outside to inside. The drive way was extended into the back yard to were foundation was placed for a future garage. The driveway and backyard is seperated by a retaining wall that can also be used for seating. A fire pit was built in the back of the yard. The yard was also fully landscaped and an irragation system was installed.

I cannot say enough good things about these fellows and their work. Their knowledge of older homes, the structure and what is common for the style and period of the home is astounding. They were always full of helpful suggestions for ways to enhance the project outcome, even when it was something that we were doing ourselves that they were not getting paid for. They were always on time, very polite, and professional. The only thing that I would say in anyway negatively is the price was very high, but I would still use them again for a project like this. When you are adding on to your home, you want someone that knows what they are doing! We had one incident where one of the sub contractors did not do his job well and caused a leak in the roof, which in turn did some damage to the existing part of the house. Band B came out on Sunday, fixed the leak, and made all of the necessary repairs at their expense! I give them an A++ and would very highly recommend them to everyone in this area!
Description of Work: Our 80 year old stone home had to have the stone cut and removed from the back of the house in order to build a 600 square foot addition. This was done in 2 days by one man, a feat that all other companies we talked to could not come up with a way to accomplish. B&B did all of the shell of the renovation and also did some stablizing of some of the existing structure(ie. floor bracing, flooring, and plaster removal). All of this type work they did themselves. Their work was done quickly and efficiently with all of their mess cleared away upon completion.

We met with them several times to come up with the design and they were very patient whenever we made modifications. The entire project was finished in the estimated time frame of about 3 months and was on budget (amazing for many contractors!). They were so friendly when our young sons wanted to come down and see the work being done all the time. We were very happy and will continue to use them for large or small projects at our house.
Description of Work: B&B designed the build out of our walkout basement into a playroom, office, bathroom, laundry room, and closet. The work included everything from installation of a specialized sub floor we requested because of prior water issues, to electrical, plumbing, installation of a new water heater, sump pump, shower, carpeting, drywall, cable/Internet connections we requested, etc.
