Good: Tile came out good, installation looks good. Stayed within estimate. Not so good: Somewhat careless with work. Put a hole in the wall, which he did fix. Chipped bathtub while installing, but did replace it. The day he chipped it he had me pay for work done and did not tell me of the chip. He then when to Lowes to see if they had them in stock. Luckily, Lowes had one. He then called me and told me what happened.

Response from Scuba Steve Premier Handyman and Remodeling Services
First of all, I feel bad that things did not go well, and for that I am sorry. However there is an explanation which should shed some light on what really happened here. First I DID NOT pick up the tub. He had it delivered or picked it up himself, I am not sure. I believe the tub was damaged before I even touched it and when I moved and set the tub the chipped feel out. It takes a lot to chip tubs the way and the size of the chip that had fallen out of the tub. I just replaced it without any complaints. I did not buy a new tub, I exchanged it due to damaged incurred via shipping at the company where he bought the tub. They replaced the tub with no questions or concerns. I did not secret the damages as he implies. Once I saw the piece had fallen off I went the store to find a replacement, then explained what I found. I did not point fingers at the time. I bought a replacement and re-installed the new tub. As far as the hole I put in the wall. Yes, I was leaning on the wall in a shower area and the wall caved in. I found the house had 3/8's inch dry wall installed on that area, the area I had put my hand through... That is NOT up to building code and I would not have any way of knowing the wall was installed at a sub-standard level. If I had known I would not have leaned on the wall while trying to make a repair. I lean on walls all the time and I have never had a wall cave through like that did. I fixed it at no charge of course. I am a very careful working. I do my best the plan ahead on things. I did not act carless as he implies. I work hard and do my best the be carful and neat. Seems the home owner just is having a had time allowing for things which are unforeseen and not the result of carelessness, but the result of shipping damages that do not show up until things are opened or installed.

Steve called on 12/13) and said that he wanted to begin work earlier (12/14) because he was overbooked. This did not work with my schedule. When he came on Sun. 12/17, he suggested completing the entire job that day. I wanted to stay with our original agreement, so I allowed Steve to be flexible about the time. I expected him to work about 3 hrs. each day. Steve began work on Sun. 12/17 and worked 2 hrs. He worked 1 hr on Mon. 12/18, 1 hr on Tues. 12/19, and 1.5 hrs on Wed. 12/20. He worked a total of 5.5 hrs. in my home. The estimated 16 hrs. included “drying time.” I felt it was unreasonable to pay for an additional 10 hrs @40/hr ($400) while the paint was drying and Steve was not working on-site. So I gave him a check for $300 (in addition to the $100 deposit) for 6 hrs labor plus materials. He verified the amount with his calculator, accepted, and cashed the check that evening. Steve was verbally aggressive in my home and on the phone (tape recorded). He used denial, threats, and intimidation to get the full amount of $700. He threatened to put a lien on my house, to send the balance of $300 to collection, and/or legal action. He accused me of changing the contract and of using my age (74) “as a decoy” to avoid paying contractors. I maintain that although Steve’s workmanship was excellent, his pricing is unethical. I paid the full amount of $700 because he is not worth the battle. If you hire Steve, be careful to get a valid contract, not an invoice sent 6 wks before the work was completed. I delayed sending this evaluation because I wanted the situation to cool off. Steve has a hot temper that made him unreasonable. I would have given him a 15% tip on $700 which would have made up for any loss he incurred, but he lost nothing. In my opinion, Steve’s work is worth $40/hr, but not $120-140/hr. Steve threatened to sue me if I posted anything on Angie’s List that would result in a caution. I refuse to be intimidated by this painter/handyman. If he objects to this review, he may contact my attorney and I will ask for the return of $400. Otherwise, I’ll let the matter drop. I told Steve that I would not recommend him. I haven’t identified him to anyone else because I want him to be successful in his work. However, I firmly believe that he needs professional counseling about his pricing habits and his quick temper with clients.
Description of Work: Repair ceiling peeling in 9 x12 kitchen: Scrape off peeling (about 5 sq”), treat with retardant for peeling, mud, sand, prime, and paint. All materials except paint included in cost of repairs. The original verbal agreement (11/06/17) was $40/hr for an estimated 16 hrs labor over 5 days to begin on 12/17/17 at 8 am. Steve used his calculator to determine the total cost: $640 + materials = $700. I gave him a $100 deposit, leaving a balance of $600. He said $800 minus $100 left a balance of $700. I thought he misspoke, but I called him the next day to verify that the balance was $600, not $700. Steve had already mailed me an invoice (not a contract) for $800. He agreed to send me a new invoice for $700. Now he says it was a $100 “discount” not a price hike.

Response from Scuba Steve Premier Handyman and Remodeling Services
This lady is very not being honest in her dealings or this review. She even tried to accusing me that I was not honest because she was an older woman, that I planned it out, too take advantage of her. I am offended that I would be accused of such a thing. She claimed that I was only there very little time but that is just not true. She demanded me to reduce my price after I was done, just because I finished faster than expected. I quoted her 15 hours and finished in 12 or so hours. That time was what was expected. Some times thing take longer, some times things take less time. I do not get to ask for more when things take more than expected. How can she demand to reduce the price when I finish faster? I never had an hourly rate agreement with her. I had a set price with her. But after I had finished the work she refused to pay the agreed amount on the invoice. So I told her pay what she was going too, but that the unpaid balance would be subject to collections or other legal actions. Sure I was upset and I most likely did not sound pleasant in my tone towards her. I was wrong about that I know it, something I need to work on. However, I find it very hard to be pleasant after working hard, doing a great job then getting told, "I not paying you because you finished faster than you said." I may not have sounded pleasant when I felt i was getting cheated or shafted at the end of the job. Let me ask you, those reading this. How pleasant would you be if you had an agreement on a price for your work. Then you do a great job and even finished early, then you are told, "I am not going to pay what was agreed on." How happy or pleasant do you think you would be at that time?. I guess I personally struggle with that, I will need to work on that. But that does not make me out to need professional counseling. WOW! what a personal attack at me. I will let the fact that I receive a Super Service Award THREE YEARS IN A ROW reflect my true demeanor! I worked at her house about 12 hours in total maybe. See I do not write down my start and finish times at a job. I get in and do the work agreed upon. I do not play around and stretch out the time something may take in order to look busy. She is the one who tried change the deal after she agreed on the price once the job was done. I included all the materials in this job, plastic, tape, special primer and other things which all was a cost of $200 or so. Then I worked 12 hours (not sure) but lets say 12 hours. So $700.00, minus $200.00, leaves $500.00. Paying me $41.66 per hour. Which I see is a FAIR hourly wage!!! She even says the work done, was great in quality. I did make a mistake on the first invoice at first and did send a correction. She only paid $700.00 not the $800.00 she shows. I won't take time addressing all her false claims. I feel bad that she tried to take advantage of me and tried to demand a reduced cost after I finished. To me that is underhanded and just out right not a way to treat people. If she wants to not be honest in her review that is on her. As to her offer of leaving things a lone. She does not and is not owed any refund. I did all the work I stated I would. My only fault is I did a great job, but I finished it faster than I thought. Since when is doing a great job and finishing before estimated a bad thing? If people do not like the price I quote, they are welcome to ask for a discount or a better price, but before the work is started, not after I finished the work as she did. I have worked out prices with other customers before, many times. I have given a discounts for work once completed before, because the work was not what I expected. Because I have a honest work ethic. But I have never had someone try to tell me what they were going to pay because I finished early until this lady.

He again was prompt, cleaned up after himself, helped us in getting the appropriate supplies and making recommendations. Our bathroom was not without problems but with Steve's expertise and hard work the bathroom turned out better than we anticipated. Steve is honest and we appreciate him working with us.
Description of Work: This was the second time we used Steve; this time he practically remodeled the whole bathroom (a second bathrooom from the first project). The long list includes: install new vanity, sink, faucet, and water lines; install new medicine cabinet; install new light; install new outlet, GFTs in both bathrooms; replace vent fan; remove old tile in shower, install new tile in shower and on walls half way up; install new shower valve; install new flooring; reinstall toilet; install new towel bar, soap dish, and toilet paper holder; install new light over 2 kitchen sink areas.

I don’t know how we got all A’s before; I was not happy and really glad to see him go even though the work is not anywhere near done and I’ve overpaid him. And be aware if Steve says he’s coming at 8 AM he will be knocking at your door at 7:45.
Description of Work: I had a multitude of jobs to be done including to resurface my garage door, to hang a new screen door on my porch, to replace an outdoor and indoor light fixtures and do some small fixes like replace closet guides. I also wanted him to replace a shower stall in my bathroom (Which turned into a whole remodel when shower stall didn’t fit as hoped) and put tile on my kitchen backsplash. It is my own fault I now realize that when Steve gave me an estimate for the jobs, he did not place a value on each job instead he gave me a quote for all of it. It was impossible to separate prices whenever a variation was required. He told me “If I quoted you by the hour you wouldn’t like my hourly price”. Steve was not flexible. It’s a complicated story but it became an oppressive atmosphere and I dreaded him coming to do anymore work. He grumbles and growls and complains as he works and you can hear him all over the house. He doesn’t lay a tarp or protection in the house. He just started jackhammering away without concern for my office equipment or upholstery in the room. He never even said, “you might want to cover some things”. His form of cleaning is to sweep debris onto the carpet because “ it’s easier to vacuum it off the carpet than off of plastic!!” There are mud tracks on my stairs. All 4 floors (Tri-level and basement) of my house are covered in thick dust. Insulation he knocked over on the garage rug was simply walked through then into the house. He used my new throw rugs to place open pails of caulk and mud on; my shoe grates as tool bins. Again my fault the first time I disapproved of his habits I should’ve cut the ties then but instead just tried to advise him of my preferences. Every time I brought a material to him he’d say it would cost more to use it.....”why don’t you just do white subway tile like everybody else.” When he installed a flagpole for me in my brick, I found it on the ground later that day.... “oops, wrong size screws”. He was supposed to caulk around the tops of my cupboards. he only did 3/4 of it and said, “oh, so I forgot some”. Besides, there’s caulk all over the ceiling that I have to now paint. He left an exposed patch on the garage floor where he missed with epoxy. When I told him he should pay for his mistake ( because more of the epoxy was $125 a box) he argued with me before finally saying he would split the cost with me. Everything was a tug of war with him. Needless to say I am deeply disappointed. I’ve had workmen before who were very mindful of their treatment of my house and would discuss “options” with me rather than “tell me” what I had to do. The last straw was when I bought the wrong size trim tile (which I could get in time for it’s install the next day) he became very angry and would not repeat to me the proper size to buy(it was in his head but he wouldn’t write it down for me again). Instead he threw the tile on the floor and yelled, “I just can’t deal with this .... and I’ll tell you another thing I’m not going to do your kitchen for you”. Who talks like that?? Certainly not a professional or ANY man to a woman. At that final straw my daughter and I became frightened and I asked him to leave. Not all Steve’s work was poor..... just some (see pictures). The lights, door andwalls of garage were fine but his untidy work habits and grumbly attitude are very unpleasant and I often felt bullied.

Response from Scuba Steve Premier Handyman and Remodeling Services
Haha haha, what a story. It amazes me the stories people come up with when they do not get there way. I'm offended at her false claims that I was scary to her live-in 35 year old daughter, come on. This statement is false! As for her pictures, they are of a work area, not 100% cleaned but clean organized. When I finish the project I would have cleaned up better. Besides this is all the left over things. I never took any extra items she bought. I stored everything in one place in the garage. The insulation packaging fell apart so I stacked it until it was needed. I do not know what the pictures is of the hard wood floor as I never installed any hard wood floor for her. The picture of the block for the closet is of a cut piece of wood, she stated she wood stain. ??? what so like this is wrong now, but it was fine when done? Wood, a recyclable items in a trash can for yard waste, how is that a problem. I never left a mess, I covered up every thing, put down plastic and cleaned daily. As for her rugs. I moved them 6 or 7 times a day, but every time I turned around she had put them right back where they had been. ???? I thought she wanted them there, so after this went one for 6 days, I left them where she put them. I even told her why I moved her step rugs, but still she kept putting back in my path. Let me see if I can shine light on this made up story. I came and gave this lady a quote for many items. When I added up every thing it was far more than her budget allowed for. So trying to be nice I gave her a large discount of $650.00, thinking maybe I would have a long time customer. She at that time presented to me specific product types and layout of tiles. The items she selected was reflected in my quote. I left to wait for the start date, all was fine until I started work. When I resuffused the garage floor, I come back and found the material reacted funny to her very poor conditioned pre-painted floor. This is the reason why the coating did not work correctly. I advised her that the epoxy might not adhere to her peeling painted floor before it was installed but she insisted to have the floor done. I attempted to scrap off and prepare the badly damaged floor to the best possible state. But the epoxy looked strange in a few places, causing it to need a second coat. The other reason I believe the expoxy reacted funny is she, the home owner did not like how the flakes fell, so decided after I had left, she walked on the floor to add more flakes in spots she thought needed more flakes. ??? It was this and the poor condition of the floor is what caused the need for a second coat. Now on to the the rest of the story. When it came the tiles, I lost track if how many times I would take at least 2 hours explaining what I was doing and exactly what was need to complete the step to finishing her bathroom and door the back slash for the kitchen. Yet every day, some times 3 or 4 times a day she would want to not only change the style, but the layout of the tiles as well. As for her bathroom she would come to me and wanted to move the wall, then she wanted move the sink, then she wanted the change the door. Then she added 5 or 6 more things to the list. she changed her mind so many times I lost track. I had to re-due almost every thing done in order to accommodate for her changes. As to her claim she bought the wrong tiles, this is false. She did not buy the wrong tiles. She changed her mind on what she wanted for the 15th time at least. See we would talk out and plan for two hours, what tile was going to be used. Then I would count out how much she would need so she could buy the tile. But every time she would come back with something other that what we talked about and planned out. This happened almost every day I was there trying to complete the bathroom and back slash for the kitchen. Every time we talked 2 hours she would on her own change what she wanted and buy only sample on the tile and I would need to re-measure and recount what was needed. For the first two weeks I attempt the please her, until finally I told her she needed to pay for all the changes or I would need to stop the project and she would need to find someone else. She become very rude, said she would get even in her review of me. As I guess she feel she has. Previously, when I asked her, why all the changes she asked for, she told me, "I'm fickled". Well to me it don't matter how anyone is. You can make all the changes you want in a project, as long as you are willing to agree to a price change as well. You can not get marble installed for the same price as ceramic tile, ask any installer or tile company. I have worked on over 1700 homes while connected with Angie's List. And hundreds more outside of Angie's List and thousands over the 26 years I have been working. In all my years I have never had any such claims presented regarding my work and work performance or demeanor. I say let my past history speak for its self. See to me what we have in this review is someone who did not get their way and decided to be vindictive because they could. This is the first time I had to stop a project because of the numerous changes that I was asked to do without any consideration for compensation for the changes. Let me add a comment posted by Elizabeth Holland from my Facebook page, it reads as follows: "Today I like to share with you a Male friend and his Name is Steve Waffle KiYa, we have been Face book friends for a while .. I have not talked with him outside Facebook so I can only share with you my upservation ...Steve has always show me respect and treated me with Kindness ... He did arrive on time at 7:15 pm. Looked at water heater, had to go to Home Depot to buy the heater and parts. He did get me 10% discount as a vet, which I appreciate. He did buy $51 in parts that I had to take back; he rushed around my finished basement looking for the water shutoff valve? Not impressed there. Replaced the water heater and the work was fine. Meantime the upstairs toilet was leaking -- he diagnosed the problem, grabbed a flexible hose from his van, replaced the one that was there, but took the old one with him. Pronounced it fixed because it wasn't leaking anymore and charged me $30. However, it didn't leak because he didn't turn the water back on. When I did the next day, leaked like a sieve. I just returned from Home Depot with a new flexible hose and seals. The one he replaced mine with did not have a rubber seal in the connection. I have just fixed my own leaking toilet for less than $10 in parts. Trust me, I was not happy with his work. Granted, he wasn't there to fix the toilet and he did a good job on the water heater and hauled the old one away, which was great.

I did the install after hours and worked until 10:30 pm. I am not surprised at the review. The home owner watched my every move. In the past when someone does that, I know there is noting I can do right and they look for something to complain about. And she found something as expected. I guess you can't every one happy all the time. When replacing a water heater, because I don't carry a large supply of parts in my truck, I told her I would be buying extra things to avoid having to return for something unexpected. EVERY water heater goes in different than the one before. She said it was fine, but know wants to complain about what she returned. Yet I did not take anything that I did not use. I only took away old and broken and scape pieces. Most plumbers have a full set of parts on there trucks and charge much more than I did. Besides if the toilet was not fixed she could have called and I would have corrected it without any further cost to her. But she did not even call me. The toilet line I used was in my truck. I had no idea the rubber seal had fallen out. I simple mistake. As far as her water shut off. Most the time a lot of home owners do not know where the shut off is. So I started looked for the shut off. I would like to ad that if something I do is not correct and the person calls I always make good on what was done wrong at no added charge. But if the customer does not call. I have no idea something needed to be corrected...

He has done work for us once before. I think he is very reasonable. If you call him, he comes and you figure out what you are going to spend. He does the job.
Description of Work: He repaired some drywall in our basement bathroom.

Steve was able to come the next day after my call. My Mother, who is 90 years old, who lives alone, was very comfortable with Steve. He fixed her door bell for a reasonable price. She is very pleased with Steve's work and will use him again.

The job went very well. He came right away when he was finished with the current job he was at. He got right down to business and knew his stuff. He cleaned up after himself and the job site (the bathroom) when he was finished. He was very decently priced as well. Scuba Steve does all kinds of handyman and remodel work so we definitely are keeping him in mind for future projects.

Response from Scuba Steve Premier Handyman and Remodeling Services
Wow, really ? I sorry I could not hear this person well over all the noise on my current project. I surely did not mean to offend her. And, Yes may schedule is full. It is full because of the quality of work I do and price I offer. She wanted her house painted outside. I just do not own latters high enough to paint a 3 story house. Now why can't I polity pass on painting this woman's home? I was polite. This person is mad because I did not want take time to come and see her when I knew I could not do the work? Hum! Well know this, if I can not do the work. I will polity tell you it's not something I can do. I won't lie and say I can do something and not be able too.

Steve came in & didn't waste any time getting right to work. He's fast & really does a great job. He cleaned up really well after each time that he was here also. (I appreciate that very much.) We will be doing some more repairs later on this summer, & we already asked Steve if he would come back & fix them. If your looking for a hard worker, Steve is your repairman. Very nice man.

We were having 2 of our bathrooms remodeled by a friend of ours and needed a light box moved in one bathroom, which our friend was not able to do electrical work or move the box, especially since it required notching out a 2x4 behind the drywall to get the box centered with our new sink. I called Steve and explained what I needed done that morning, he quoted me $85.00 over the phone and was there PROMPTLY at 5:30PM as he stated he would be. He walked in with a small tool bag and at first I was skeptical as I know the job required some major cutting. I left Steve to do his work and have to admit was nervous when I heard him cutting and the walls vibrating that the work our friend had already done was going to be ruined as he had already laid the ceramic floor and did the painting. To my amazement, Steve was done in less than 30 minutes when i walked in the light box was centered on the wall and he had cut a perfect hole around the box and did not hurt the paint, drywall or flooring I was amazed I really thought it was going to require some patch work, but he did an amazing job. While there he also quoted me a price on adding a couple of light switches and was very informative. He actually took the time to chat with me for a bit, which I found nice considering many contractors just want to get the job done and move on....Steve took the time to tell me where he learned his craft, his level of professionalism, and service. We would and are going to hire Steve again and his prices are very reasonable. Our friend who is a handyman contractor completed the work, which he has done for 15 years, and we were not 100% pleased with it so much so that we are going to have Steve finish the job

He called before he came to my home at the time he said he would. It is so nice to have someone follow through as I've had some bad experiences. I have more work that needs to be done and have asked him for his services. He's prompt, does the work, gives estimates and I know he can be counted on. Highly recommend him.

Have used Steve before and as usual, he did a site survey ahead of time and on day of painting he showed up on time, did a great job of prepping and taping off areas which weren't to be painted. Finished ahead of schedule, cleanup everything and house looks beautiful.

Scuba Steve came out as soon as he wrapped up another job he was working on the same day I called. I loved the business name and the fact he's a Veteran definitely caught my eye originally in his bio. He was also highly rated on Angie's List. Steve was prompt and got right to work. He replaced the wax ring and the hardware (because I know the hardware was bad to begin with), he put the toilet and all it's components back together and cleaned up everything after he was done. I would highly recommend Steve's services.
Description of Work: I needed to have our leaking toilet fixed after I was too busy to complete the task. I had removed the toilet but with some difficulty because the my hardware was bad and I knew it needed a new wax ring.
