Description of Work: Paul French is a total professional with superb knowledge & expertise in chimney restoration & function. My late Mother's home in Chattanooga, TN was under contract, and the buyers wanted the chimney inspected. I had one inspection done by a rude person from a company that just wanted to find numerous "problems" to jack up the price by thousands. I contacted Angie's List for references of chimney inspectors in Chattanooga, and one of those referrals was French's Chimney Restoration. Paul came to inspect the chimney's cleanliness and structure. He found the problem the buyers were concerned about and gave me his fair price to fix the bricks on the exterior of the chimney above the roof. Unfortunately, he was working on a 2-month project in Nashville, TN, and wouldn't be able to do my project until mid-summer, well after the buyers moved in. However, 10 days later he was back home for Memorial Day, and called to see if he could do my chimney work while he was in town. Wow, what a considerate man! It took him several hours to replace several bricks, redo some mortar, and repair the chimney cap. He did a beautiful job and was a pleasure to know. He obviously thinks of his customers' concerns and finds a reasonable way to help them out. Paul French has my highest praise and respect for a job extremely well done! S. Hammond

He has not called me to do the job yet. My chimney leeks onto my living room floor when it rains because of the temporary aluminum he put on the top. Paul seems to be a really nice guy and knows his work well and is capable of performing good work. However, health circumstances and care for his aging Mother have set him back in performing the chimney services. I am still waiting to hear from him because I believe he is one of the very few people that is licensed to perform the poured inner liner that my chimney must have done.
Description of Work: Followed after another chimney guy who did a bad job refurbishing my 3 flume chimney. Frenches gave an estimate for refurbishing liner and putting a crown on the chimney. He put my aluminum liner back in the chimney and put a temporary aluminum crown on the top until he could fit me in to his schedule. He has not been able to fit me in for over a year due to large projects and health problems. The last time I got him to answer his phone he said he would have my chimney done before winter set in this year.

I wanted to discuss the repairs with my husband. I have left a couple of messages to schedule the repairs and he has yet to return my calls. I have read on other reviews that he is hard to get a hold of, but I feel I have been patient. While waiting to schedule my repairs, I feel more damage is being done.
Description of Work: We set an appointment with Paul French to come and check a leak in our chimney. Paul came out and inspected our chimney and went over the repairs he recommended and the cost would be approximately $3,000. He said it may be several weeks before he could get started. I was to discuss the repairs and call him back to schedule a start date. I have left a couple of messages and he has yet to return my calls.

They came on time. He suggested moving the wood stove and I am very glad he did. It gave us more space and it looks better than before. He seemed to be very knowledgeable. They cleaned up their mess. We have used the wood stove a couple of times since and it seems to give off more heat.
Description of Work: Replaced metal pipes to my wood stove. Moved and cleaned wood stove. Cleaned and inspected chimney.

Paul is the consummate professional. He may not be the quickest (our job took over four months), but his work is second to none and his attention to detail is unsurpassed. We also had a ton of work done compared to most, and his home base was two hours away. But if quality is what you find most important in a contractor, Paul really is the best. During the restoration of our 1908 farmhouse home, Paul really made it seem like he had our best interest in mind. And he did. He gave me an option for every budget and listened patiently to my every question and request. Paul is one of only two people in the state who work with and quot;Golden Flueand quot; and the stuff is fantastic. Most chimney guys are hawking steel liners, but what Paul does is the real deal. It's mostly seen in Europe, but if you can find someone to cast line your chimney in the states, you are very lucky. And to beat all, it's only about $20 percent more than the crap metal. I felt very lucky to have found him, and even more fortunate that he could fit me into his busy schedule. Paul is honest and passionate. He really cares about his work and the people he works for. I am glad I found him because there really is no one better for the job.
Description of Work: - removed and rebuilt three hearths and fireplaces- removed and rebuilt chimneys from the roof up- put on two chimney caps and four chimney pots (four flues total)- lined all chimney's with "golden flue"

They were on time, very neat and thorough. He wanted to replace a whole bunch of other items to get me up to code, but he didn't push the issue. My firewall was cracked and he said he would get me info on replacing but I never heard back from him, so I patched the cracks with furnace cement myself. Seems to have worked fine.

Awesome! He is a little difficult to get a hold of but once he and his crew committed to a date/time they were there. This job took 2 days to complete and had to come back another afternoon to drop off the chemicals. Paul (owner) is a really cool guy who knows his stuff! He is real easy to get along with and will work with you on what you want and what he thinks you need. He is not a sales guy, at no point did I feel like he was trying to push services or equipment on me that I did not need. They are also very professional and take their time to do the work right and at the same time make sure that your house stays clean on the inside while they are working. I can't recommend them enough and I plan on using them again in the future.
Description of Work: I have a house with 2 fire places (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs). Fire place 1: cleaned chimney installed a gas blocking plate in the fireplace installed a flue block plate at the top of the chimney to make sure no animals or debree falls into the chimney ran a natural gas line into the fireplace from the kitchen through the basement installed ventless gas log set Fire place 2: cleaned chimney (had never been done before by previous owners, removed 7x5 gallon buckets of creosote!!) cut a hole in the chimney cap (is made of heave stone so had to be done to also clean from the top) and added a removable metal plate over hole removed old flue re-bricked part where flue came out, did not install a replacement flue but will do it once i use chemicals to remove any remaining creosote that he just could not remove due to the shape of the chimney and the fact that this creosote had been building up for 50 years added a screen to keep animals and debris out of chimney by stone cap left me with 7 gallons of chemicals that i will need to use when i build fires to remove remaining creosote They are coming back at the beginning of next season to clean out the creosote that the chemicals loosened up and will then install the flue. (flue installed later because that way the loose creosote has a place to go and won't get stuck behind it) Misc: ran gas line to my dryer as we have a gas dryer. Left 2 capped T joints so I have the option of converting the downstairs to gas logs and also option of running gas to my grill should I ever choose to do that in the future.

I had my chimney cleaned last year and was able to use it once before it started smoking. I gave up and didn't use it the rest of the winter. Spring came and whenever it rained, it rained in my fireplace. By the end of the summer, whenever it rained, the stone wall around the fireplace weeped. I found French's Chimney on Angie's List and made the call. Paul French came out and looked over the entire fireplace and chimney and gave me an estimate. I have an insert and he pulled it out to look into the chimney. He took pictures from all directions and showed me the damage. I was very impressed with his work and didn't even try to get another estimate, just hired him. He came out a week later and repaired my fireplace and chimney. When he pulled up the roofing to fix the flashing he found my roof was heavily damaged. He took pictures and offered to let me go on the roof and see the damage. I went up and he showed me all the damaged area and explained what he would do to fix it. The damper was rusted and broke off as he was trying to get it working. He order a new one and came out a few weeks later to replace it. He tried to find the best price for the parts and made a part of the damper that he thought was too expensive to buy. I was very impressed with his professionalism and his work. He completely cleaned up the area and left me with a working fireplace.
Description of Work: Built crown, replaced chimney cap, replaced flashing & damaged roof, fixed broken damper, cleaned chimney, leveled fireplace floor.

10 years ago I built a house and know the headaches that can come with THAT experience. Paul French and his crew were fantastic. They are true craftsmen and take pride in their work. This was a very messy job but there was not a speck of dust that entered my home. They constructed double tents and then exhausted all of the dust out doors. Each day they cleaned around their work area and were very organized. They protected my roof with scaffolding and pads.
Description of Work: My house was remodled in 1990 but the chimney was built in 1935. It is all stone, two sided with two separate fire boxes. One is woodburning and the other is gas. It never had a liner and had provided many years of service. However, in 2007 I had a chimney fire. I was told by several companies to not use the fireplace any longer or else risk a serious house fire. One company tried to sell me a steel liner but I knew that with the use that I give my fireplace, this would not be satisfactory. Another chimney company said that what I needed was a poured liner. I'd read about this but didn't hope that there was someone in my area who was trained in this method. I was wrong. This company told me about Paul French. Paul French installed the "Golden Flue" system (www.goldenflue.com). Visit the web site for more detail. My job required taking out both existing fireboxes and the center chimney divider that ran about 6 feet from floor up. They then cleaned the central shaft and patched it with a fireproof compound. They installed a fantastic lighter system for the wood side and replaced the gas pipe to the gas side. They replaced it with a proper cast iron system. They then poured the new dual lumen flue. Paul beautifully rebuilt the fireboxes, installed new custom made dampers, they repointed the chimney, and flashed it with copper flashing. They poured a new chimney top, stained it to match the stone and topped it off with a custom copper chimney cap. Because of the chimney fire, Paul provided detailed information to my hojmeowner's insurance and helped to act a go between. Finally, Paul installed new fireplace doors and a new set of gas fire logs in the gas fireplace. The new wood burning fireplace draws beautifully, and is now completely safe.

Mr. French was prompt, courteous, and helpful throughout the entire process. There seems to be a lot of crooks in the chimney sweeping business, so we are very glad to have found an honest, knowledgeable man. He primarily works on chimney repair, and he knows what he is doing. I won't use anyone else, but he stays very busy, so you might have to wait a while to get work done.
Description of Work: We initially contacted companies to sweep our chimneys, only to find that one had a crack in it. Paul French repaired the chimney, brought the fireplaces up to current code, and swept them. He also helped us get our insurance company to acknowledge that the crack was the result of a chimney fire and help pay for the repairs.
