They installed the unit before I moved in to the house. Yes, I would recommend them to other users.

We had 3 estimates for a new HVAC system before deciding to go with Carter for the purchase and installation of our unit. Our primary reason for choosing them is their seemingly sincere interest in meeting customer needs and making sure the best, most cost effective system was installed. Everything went great with the day of install: the installers arrived on time, worked throughout the day, were pleasant, etc. We noticed that the machine was a lot louder and made a fairly high-pitched squeak but ignored it. A month later, when we received our first electric bill, it was more than double our usual electric bill for the month of August, and that month did not have any sort of extreme temperature to merit such a high bill. We had been told that our bills from now on should be at least 20% LESS than our old ones and maybe more since our old machine was over 20 years old and incredibly inefficient. When we called Carter and a technician came out, we were told that the new machine had been installed incorrectly (he was surprised at how badly the installation had gone) and someone would have to some and reinstall the machine. So, I had to miss another day of work for the machine to be reinstalled. But, they were gracious about the error, so I set up the reinstall with little complaint. In the months following the second install, our electric and gas bills weren't as extreme as the first one, but they were all significantly higher than they had been with our 20 year old machine. Carter has a guarantee that if your bills are higher, they will pay the difference. That is a great service, but it didn't help with the fact that we were promised that a new machine should yield better results. They did honor their guarantee; we had to save our utility bills for the first year, and they paid us the difference in our heating and cooling bills. Still, the next year, we continued to have much higher bills. Carter sent our technicians 2 or 3 times to inspect the unit, and each time the technician would tell us something that was wrong with the machine. One said that a switch had been improperly flipped that made our unit run on full throttle when it was supposed to be set to idle when an optimum temp had been reach; so, a year later. Other times, they claimed to make minor tweaks that should improve the machine. Shannon Miner has been pleasant, but when we contact him, it often takes weeks or even months before he contacts us back. We have a machine that is either a lemon from the beginning or was ruined by an improper install. Now, it squeaks constantly, it makes tons of noise, and takes forever to warm the house. Our old machine would warm the house back up quickly when we returned from work. Now, it can take 3 hours to rise from 64 to 67. Our 20 year old machine could do that in 30 minutes. We have asked Shannon Miner for more than just the one year of difference in heating costs. His company installed a new machine claimer better efficiency and we paying more. On top of that, the machine is not working properly and it makes a lot of noise just trying to warm or cool the room. He has made excuses, saying that perhaps something else in our house is causing the increase in gas and electric bills--it seems coincidental that the bills would all increase immediately following the install of what his company has already admitted to a poorly installed machine and then a machine that had a lot of glitches. I'm ready for the company to do more than make excuses and admit that the machine is messed up. We have asked for a resolution to this, but we have gotten no real solution.

About 2 or 3 hours after the tech left, I detected the smell of wires or wiring insulation burning and noticed that the blower wasn't producing any air from the ducts. It was making a humming sound and I figured the motor had stopped running. I called the tech and told him what it was doing. He said he would have his office call me the next day and give me an estimate of the cost to replace this blower motor. I got a call on Monday morning from the office. The lady said it would cost about $525.00 to replace this motor. I told her that I wasn't sure whether to repair this unit or replace it. After some time studying about this, I called a local supply house and they had a motor for $121.00 plus tax. I gave them the model number and all the information off the label. I went to their place and picked up the motor and installed it myself. I'm not an A/C technician but I have a few skills that I have learned in my 66 years on this earth. I don't like the idea of letting someone diagnose my problems and then doing the repairs myself. After dealing with 2 HVAC companies in one day, I felt I had no choice. Why do these companies need to mark up parts so much? I paid this technician $105.00 for a run capacitor that I found on Ebay for about $10.00. Sure, he told me that he had only charged me $35.00 for his service call. Why would the price of this capacitor be so high? Why would they need to charge $525.00 to replace this motor? I can't answer these questions. I realize that these folks are in business to make a profit. That is normal and acceptible but how much margin do they need on parts to be profitable? My experience with 2 different HVAC companies this weekend did not cause me to be favorably impressed with either of them. I know I'm going to replace my heat pump soon. Now I don't know where to turn for that.
Description of Work: Another HVAC company had come to my home on a Sunday morning and diagnosed my heat pump problem as a bad blower motor. This first company did not have a replacement blower motor and since the weather was bad and the weather forecast worse, I felt I needed to get this problem repaired as soon as possible. This tech said he had 2 other customers ahead of me and he would call me back before he started my way. I explained to him that the blower motor was said to be bad. I told him that the $525.00 price quoted to me for this motor seemed high to me. He said there was a good chance he had a replacement motor on his truck and he thought he could save me some money. He called later that afternoon and said he was headed my way. When he arrived, he plugged the wires in to the blower motor and said it was running. He said it looked like the capacitor was the problem instead of the motor. He put a tool around the wire on this capacitor and said it wasn't producing the proper amount to run the motor. I watched as he started the motor and it indeed was running. He replaced this capacitor and repaired a burned wire somewhere in the system. He charged me $184.00 and the system was working when he left.

Tech told me after talking to supervisor that it would be cheaper and smarter with my age to buy a new unit. Tech told me not to say nothing but it would be way beneficiary to go ahead and replace the fan verses the price of a new unit that his boss (Shannon) recommend but the tech said my unit would be fine with just a fan...

They came out twice and no issues. I called because my A/C started to not keep up with the heat and I had noticed the outside compressor fan was not running. They came out and took a look. The tech initially said that I needed to replace the fan compressor. I asked how much and said he wasn't sure but maybe $500-1000. The tech suggested I might just want to replace the unit instead of accepting that much cost without really any guarantees. I told him that I would get another opinion before I spent any money. He went back outside to take a look at something else. I don't know what. He called the part into the office for a price quote which came back at like $1500. I declined. A little while later, I received a second phone call stating that they had made a mistake on the first quote. I was told that the actual cost to replace the fan compressor was going to be $352. I told them I'd get back to them. A couple weeks later, I called another company to come out and take a look. It turns out that there was nothing wrong with unit except a circuit breaker was turned off and the outside unit. The new A/C tech said that was why the air wasn't blowing cold inside the house and not able to keep up. He stated there wasn't anything wrong with the unit except that the breaker was off. With that said, being female predisposes one to dishonesty when it comes to money. SHAME on Carter's for attempting deceit.
Description of Work: I had an annual service maintenance agreement with these folks.

I called Carter because I had icing on my coils. I decided to use them based solely on the fact that they had a flat diagnostic fee when other co's had trip charges and hourly fees to do a diagnostic. I told the tech I had already cleaned my coils and had done all the other troubleshooting related to icing. I remodel houses and rarely take someone else's word for anything. After the diagnostic he determined that freon was low and added freon. Problem solved. About 2 months later my children's grandmother had icing on her coils. She lives in a pretty modest neighborhood in E. Brainerd. I recommendeded she call Carter. They came out to do a diagnostic. They conluded that she needed her coil removed and cleaned and that her filter needed to be replaced. They quoted $512 to clean the coil and up to $200 to address the filter. Coil cleaner is $20 and filters are $15. I thought this was outrageous and called Carter to cancel the service call and tell them what I thought of their exploitive pricing. I then called Stan's. Their tech came out to do a diagnostic and determined that the coils were just fine. The problem was a capacitor in the outside unit that needed to be replaced. They charged a total of $125. Problem sovled. Carter would have charged $512 for the coil cleaning and the issue would still not be resolved so they would have eventually found out about the capacitor and gouged a middle class GRANDMOTHER even more on top of the filter. I later found out their freon prices are ridiculously high. Apparently they have 2 pricing structures--for people like me who know what's up, and for people who don't which they think they can freely take advantage of, even though they can least afford it. This seems to go on alot up here in chattanooga and I don't think Carter should be able to get away with it. It is wrong, immoral, probably illegal, and most definitely unethical and dishonest. I hope this review saves someone's friend or family member from getting ripped off by this pathetic excuse of a company. Have a nice day!
Description of Work: Carter added freon to my system. I thought I had found a good company. I recommended them to my children's grandmother who they attempted to swindle.

Description of Work: Well. overall the experience wasn't good. They did respond quickly to my call, but that was about the best it got. The tech showed up on-time, but then set in his truck on the phone for about 15 minutes. When he came inside, the first thing he said was "where's your thermostat?" Not a "hey how are you doing..." or anything remotely polite. Once he found the problem in the heat pump, he then asked if he could come back tomorrow.... (Hmm) I asked why, and he told me he didn't have his tools with him. WHAT?!?! (What kind of company sends a tech out without tools?!?!?) I asked why and he said his van was getting worked on and he could come back at the same time tomorrow. I then asked if he would call another tech and get them out. Well, whoever he called told him to go get his tools thank goodness! I guess he was too lazy to even think about going to get the tools... so someone had to tell him to do so. I then sat around my cold house for about an hour until he returned. Once he was back, he knocked out the rewiring problem fairly quickly. He then tried to see if my old thermostat was still good, but it wasn't. He said he had one that I could buy off them... FOR $150! I asked if there was a cheaper one and he said no... that was all they carried (IF I owned a Heat/Air company... I would make sure my customers had a couple more options! Also, it would have been nice to know there was only ONE option so I could have actually went to Home Depot and bought one while he was gone to pick up the tools. I told him I wasn't interested in buying it. So they charged me $140 basically for a tech to show up tool-less... leave for an hour, then come back and literally "cut out" a burned up section of wire in my heat pump and bypass it... after asking me to go another night without heat. Not what I would call professional! I went to Home Depot that evening, bought a nice digital Honeywell thermostat for $45 and installed it myself. NOT a company I will call on again... and I don't recommend you do either!!!!

Experience was great. We highly recommend this company to others.
Description of Work: After having 3 other service companies come out to do regular service on our aging heating and AC unit, Carter is the company who did it right. We used them for the first time last year and our unit hasn't worked this well since we first got it. We felt the technician was honest, thorough and articulate in explaining what he did. We had no hesitation in calling them again this year and will continue to do so!

The workmen came to replace our unit about 8:00 AM . They were very courteous and friendly. They even took time to answer our little granddaughter's many questions and helped look for lizards and frogs for her bug cage. They later sent an inspector to check the installation. He found everything in order. We were very pleased with their work, but tell Tim that Bess is still waiting for her lizard.

My heat pump coils were freezing over. Even at low temps. I was still getting warm air, but woke up to a block of ice every morning. I figured the defrost function was not working. I called one company and they said I needed a new defrost panel for $350.00. The tech seemed young and quick to diagnose. I called Carter and they were there that day. The tech., Alen, called 30 min. before I came home from work to accommodate the fact that I had dogs in the yard. He was professional and took his time and decided that only my defrost sensor was bad. This only cost $150.00. I saved some money and got my heater working in 2 days. Good Company, Good Tech. Ask for Alen. Laid back competent guy.

I was impressed at the difference in companies. The company that I first asked to look at my furnace was awful, they didn't care that it was freezing out and I had no heat. So I called this company, they came right out and easily made the repair. They were a better price and provided much better service. I was very happy with the work they did.
