Mr. Cromer to visit my home for a price on a kitchen renovation. The job : reinstall existing cabinets that had removed for the renovation, build two new cabinets, build 2 short walls behind the island; trim out the whole kitchen. They would build the 2 cabinets in his shop and bring them to the job ready to be installed. I received a quote (Total price $6,000.00) and note saying a 50% deposit was required at the time of acceptance. I paid the deposit of 3,000.00. On the scheduled date for the job to begin Mr. Cromer again arrived with his secretary. He did not bring workers with him, the cabinets, or any materials. He said that he had not started the cabinets and they would not be ready for a week. He immediately started making negative comments about the job, about prep work, and what he did not like in the room. He began arguing with me about my choice to have the wall behind the island 1 1/2 inches taller than the standard and my choice to have the counter top 4 inches wider than builders standard. This was very tense. This was a loud discussion. He was almost yelling at me. It was like he didn't want the job after he had agreed to do it. He had so many derogatory things to say I gave up and told him just to do what ever is needed for me to have a beautiful showcase kitchen. At the end of the conversation you could cut the air with a knife. To lighten up the moment. I said, "I will be watching and learning as you do the job." I reached over and touch his forearm and said," Humor me, Mr. Cromer, Well, if I can hand you a hammer to help out just ask." He turned to me and in a very rude voice said, "This is not a humorous job, I am a professional. You will not be able to understand us. My men only speak Spanish and I will be speaking only in Spanish." After they left I broke down in tears. I have never been so insulted in my life and especially in myyyyyyyyyy home. I called Mr. Cromer's office within an hour. I left a message on his machine, that I wanted to cancel the job, and I wanted my money back. Mr. Cromer called me and I told him exactly how I felt and what he had done. I told him I did not like him. I told him he could keep $500.00 to cover his cost of coming to my home and any purchases he made. He had made a small purchase of lumber during the time after he left my home. He said "I am not giving you back any of your money." The next day my husband called him. He said that he would give us back half of the money. We had to agree. He said half or nothing. We had no kitchen, he had our money, and I was still so upset. For a week I cried off and on. He said, his only excuse was that it was Monday morning and he had those women with him. My husband receive a check made out to him for $1,500.00. I had hire him, I had paid him, and I fired him, but he sent the money to my husband. I want the $1,000.00 back that he did not refund. He can keep $500.00 for his time.
