I, the contractor, David Gerisch was originally hired to work for (removed member name) to do the following work at their residence: Demo one existing bathroom; Create new master bathroom; Install hardwood flooring in living room on top of existing hardwood floors; Install cabinets and countertops in kitchen; Cut one exterior door into the kitchen wall; Turn one exterior door into a window; and Hang some interior doors and trim and crown molding. The homeowners and I originally agreed upon a “Labor Only” contract, which is extremely rare for me to do. The homeowners asked to provide all their own materials because they wanted to save money by purchasing on their own and with a credit card. There were several problems that occurred because of this, such as, but certainly not limited to, poor quality materials. The tiles purchased by the homeowner for the master bathroom shower were bottom shelf quality. Some of these tiles measured 4in and some measured 4 and 1/8 inch. These tiles had 2 factory edges and 2 cut edges. The homeowners, after seeing the problem for themselves, returned the product to the store. However the exact same problem occurred with the new box of the same tiles. Had the job have been “Materials and Labor” as 99.99% of my jobs are, or if the homeowner would have purchased a better quality product, this problem would have been avoided. Also, having to wait for the homeowner to return the inferior product to the store and waiting for them to bring back new product, added time to the total of the job. That in itself may not seem like a lot, but when you add up times it was done over and over, it is very easy to add weeks to a project. The same problem of inferior product also occurred in the kitchen with the cabinets. After I personally installed the cabinets with my own hands, contrary to the review which states I did not do much work myself, I realized these cabinets were not up to my standards and asked the homeowners if I could please sand the cabinets free of charge, to which of course they were obliged. As a contractor, I could’ve just installed what I was asked to install, but it means a lot to me to make sure the finished project is beautiful. I wanted the cabinets to look good. Period. Of course, sanding the cabinets (free of charge), was yet another factor that added time to the total job. To save money, the homeowners asked to finish the cabinets themselves. There were numerous occurrences that added time to the total job. Another example is the homeowner purchasing wrong materials for the plumbing. My plumber, in turn had to go and purchase the correct materials himself, which was not what the homeowners and I agreed upon. I had to wait for several days for the homeowner to decide what kind of hardwood floors they wanted installed. Once finally purchased, the special order floors took 10 days to arrive. Upon arrival, we had to let the floors sit in the home to acclimate. This is yet another delay that could have been avoided on part of the homeowner. Again, another time delay was added to the job when I finally, after 3 or 4 discussions, convinced the homeowners that installing new floors over old hardwood floors was improper procedure and they agreed to allow me to tear up the existing floor. Of course, I could have just saved my time and their money by installing the new floors on top, but my main concern is quality. It means a lot to me that when I leave a home, I know the clients’ home is in better condition than it was when I was hired. Yet another example of delays caused by homeowners, which could have been avoided, was their refusal to purchase a POD or other storage unit for the 1,800 square feet of furniture. The homeowners agreed to move the furniture themselves but did not. This left my men to move furniture daily, which added vast amounts of time to the job as well of costs to labor that they did not pay. I didn’t even attempt to charge the homeowners for my men moving their furniture daily. The most important response to this review, and I believe the most unfair point that was left out by (removed member name) is that the work that I was originally hired to do was almost tripled after being hiring. (removed member name) added, among other things, Installing hardwood floors in the kitchen, tearing up 1,800 square foot of hardwood floors, removing popcorn ceiling in office, tearing down ceiling and beams in new master bedroom, building exterior masonry front porch and full masonry brick stairs along with framing a gable roof over this porch, stone work around the foundation, removing old and installing new exterior siding around house, and 2 exterior windows that had to be cut in with headers installed. The electrical work that was originally ordered by the homeowners was also changed after it was completed, adding additional cost and time to the job, some of this was done free of charge in an effort to appease the homeowners. As a matter of fact, when the original time frame of 4 weeks came about, (removed member name) came out and told me that the 4 week mark was here. I agreed and reminded (removed member name) that, per her request, the work load had more than doubled. (removed member name) responded, “Yes, you are correct, no complaints from me.” The statement made in the review that the homeowners were without a kitchen for 5 weeks in simply not true. (removed member name) had access to their fridge, stove/oven, and microwave every day. They were without a dishwasher and sink. I offered to hook up a temporary sink to which they said no, that they have a hall bath they could use if needed. One of the most shocking details that was completely left out of (removed member name) review is the payment schedule. We agreed on weekly payments because the job was “Labor Only.” Usually, my jobs are “Materials and Labors” resulting in 2 payments. When the VERY FIRST payment was due, the homeowners only paid $2,000 instead of the agreed upon $5,000 - quite a difference. There was a 2 week time frame when I did not ask for a single draw, even though it was agreed upon and even though quality work was being completed at an alarming rate. When I finally asked (removed member name) for a draw, he informed me that he was “broke” (his words) until he could move some money around, including cashing out bonds and/or stocks. (removed member name) told me it would be one more week, and at that point, he gave me one-third of what he said he would. I am responsible for the work of several men. I was forced to go work on other jobs because I could no longer afford to continue to pay all of my contractors out of my own pocket when the homeowner refused to pay and claimed to be “broke.” To expect a small, local business to be able to do so is absurd and insanely inconsiderate. However, I did leave my flooring contractors on the job to keep things moving. On the last day of this job, during clean-up, (removed member name) came out and talked about having me come back to remodel their upstairs bathroom and build a detached garage. I am truly shocked at this review. I believe that I personally worked above and beyond any reasonable expectation, and in a timely manner when you take into consideration all the additional work and delays caused by the homeowners. I am honestly sorry that (removed member name) feels this way about me and my company. I personally did everything within my power to work diligently and responsibly for this family. As you can see from other reviews of me and my company on Angie’s List, I do everything I can to make sure my clients are happy. These are people, not just jobs to me.
