Paul and his crew are outstanding! Seriously, I cannot sing their praises high enough. I originally contacted Paul for a fairly small job after reading other Angie's List reviews about his courteous nature and professionalism. The other reviews were spot on. Paul has been a dream to work with on both projects and neither were uncomplicated. He is never ruffled by our questions, requests, or changes...and we changed several design aspects to the bathroom during construction. When I apologized to one of his crew for the extra work, he told me it was "not a problem; you're paying us for what you want and you should have it." Our bathroom is totally transformed from late 80s blah to 21st century contemporary. Apex took the bathroom down to the studs and concrete floor and then built a new walk-in shower with built-in marble corner seat and tile floor that matched the larger bathroom floor. They tiled every square inch of wall space in the bathroom, installed new vanity/toilet/towel bars, moved electrical & added additional lighting, added an architectural beam surrounded in very small stone tiles to hold dramatic lighting, and carved an almost 3' long lighted niche into the wall as our main design feature. Paul & his crew tidied up at the end of every day, so we didn't feel like we were living in a messy environment. We're so pleased with the level of work we received that we hope to use Apex for an even bigger upstairs bedroom+bath remodel we want to undertake later this year. Paul's price, while not the cheapest bid, was very fair, and for the pleasant demeanor and can-do attitude he and his crew brought to our home each day, the price was worth it!
Description of Work: We have hired Apex Contractors (Paul & his 3-man crew) for 2 different jobs. In autumn of 2014, he created an unusual living room travertine tile wall & a separate travertine fireplace surround for us. We were so thrilled by the quality of both his work & his professionalism that we arranged for him to come back in January, 2015, to gut and rebuild a guest bathroom in our house.

Paul came to my house and gave a very reasonable estimate to complete the job (beat competitors by over 1k). He fit us into his schedule the next week and complete the job in 4 days. Paul and his crew were very polite, punctual and pleasant to work with. The finished job beat expectations and their warranty left me feeling fantastic about the decision to hire Apex Contractors!

Paul and Nick are amazing. We were thoroughly pleased with not only the beautiful work they did, but their dedication, professionalism and collaboration on this job. From the start, they were clean, responsive, and involved us in all decisionmaking every step of the way. I find that with remodels, there are often hiccups and delays and this really didn't have any. We had very, very, minor issues and none were because of Apex. They completely gutted our master bathroom, which included removing a wall and small closet. It was falling apart to say the least. We had cracked tile, a corroding tub, rot and water damage behind our shower walls, an uneven floor and the list goes on! Our master bedroom also had an "interesting" tile border and carpet center, which they took up so that we could lay carpet to match the other bedrooms in our house. They laid all new tile(floors, shower, and sink backsplash), converted the bathtub area to a shower, added new plumbing for a double vanity, added french doors to the bathroom (where no doors existed before), created a larger door opening to the linen closet, and installed fixtures, lighting etc. Paul and Nick not only performed this work efficiently and skillfully(in less than 3 weeks!), but also had great insight on design choices, as we were first-timers to a major renovation like this. They also englarged the openings to closets in our two other bedrooms. These closets are a really nice size, but you couldn't tell because they had a traditional single door on them. They opened these up to 60" and added bifolds/french doors in those rooms. The closets are so much more usable now and look as big as they are. Their pricing was also very competitive and the best quote we received. They stayed on budget and schedule. Can't recommend these guys enough!

The project was to renovate a bathroom to improve handicap accessibility to a shower. In the process they would need to determine the source of a water leak and repair any damage it caused. They carefully listened to our needs and met all: a simple attractive and functional design with a reasonable price tag; to cause the least disruption and inconvenience possible in our home and to finish on time - in 7 days!. As in any renovation there were surprises. A second major leak was uncovered resulting in an increase in cost and one additional day. They accomplished all on time and we are delighted with the results. It was a pleasure to have this contractor in our home.

Came out to my house and proposed tile work for a small bathroom floor, 40 square feet. We agreed on a set price and date for work. The night before the work was to be complete I got a call saying the price was now 80% more as a result of having to pay staff for time and fuel.Paul came to me as a wonderful referral who does excellent work. Perhaps that may be true but the business end of his operations were over stated and under delivered.

Wrong Company? We are located in the Charleston SC area...not sure what is going on.
Unfortunately for Paul and his crew, they were walking into a mess left by a previous individual who was unqualified to do the work and had left me with a disaster. You could say this was an episode of HGTV's "Fix my Renovation" . I had to wait six months to save enough to redo everything and then find someone who was willing to do a smaller, lower end job. Paul was willing to accept it and his price quote was 2,400-4,400 less than all other previous quotes I had received. He was also willing to work with me, because I had purchased some things already and what I wanted redone needed to be available at Home Depot or Lowes. Upon initial inspection, he recommended I redo the travertine tile on the floor( it was not level and one could stub their toes on it), gut the hideous tiled tub surround back to studs and redo backer board, make a double niche, and retile with the 6X8 subways and mosaic I had purchases. He would reset my bathroom window correctly ( it had been moved over due to the new tub being two inches wider) and it was now open to the outside and letting in spiders! Initially he also thought we could repair the damaged drywall but then recommended it all be replaced because it would not have been cost effective to try and fix it. This also ensured I had green board where required. He also had to redo some structural work and make it level for the plumbing side of the shower wall. His quote also would include replacing bathroom door, baseboard installation, installing vanity and linen cabinet ( this would require some additional cabinetry work, ie. skin installation, creating a filler pieces and adding crown molding to top of linen tower) electrical work ( Moving two GFI outlets as well as the box for the vanity light, installing said light, installing a ceiling light/fan combo with an auto sensor for humidity that also required rewiring for a 3-way switch) and also setting the toilet in place. He agreed to start the following week. He was actually able to start a day earlier . That worked out perfectly, as I was able to be on hand to answer questions and see what potential problems would arise. The first day they gutted and discovered the shower plumbing had been leaking behind the wall, the mixer valve was no good and the faucet was ruined due to grout imbedded in it from previous work. They also reworked the structural issue on that wall as well so drywall could go up. The next day drywall was installed, plumbing redone in shower and the backer board was going up. Also drywall guy was brought in to do first mud coat. Third day included sanding and doing a second mud coat, floor tile installed that evening, and backer board finished in the shower. By the end of fifth day ,shower was tiled, floor, walls and window were done. On day seven and eight the cabinetry was installed, electrical finished , grouting done, all shower parts ie. faucet, shower head and grab bars installed, door put in and toilet set. As a side note, on the second day, Paul referred me to the person he used for granite and I was able to get a gorgeous scrap piece installed for way less than Lowes would have charged me. Paul and his crew were easy to work with, friendly, knowledgeable, honest, always on time, kept the work site clean and if problems arose( and there were numerous unforeseen issues) they were quick to address them with me and find a timely and reasonably priced solution. They even went out of there way to pick up the door and tile for me. I will definitely be using them again for future home remodeling projects.
Description of Work: This was a 60 sq. ft. bathroom remodel, involving demo of previous sub par work, re-tiling of floor and tub surround, drywall, plumbing work ,vanity and cabinet installation. Also hooked me up with a great deal on a granite countertop for the vanity.

I found the pattern I liked at Home Depot, a lot of people said they were interested but no one returned my calls. This guy was honest with me upfront and told me it was a 2 day job and there was no way to get around that. He also was able to offset it a little bit because I had a few other little jobs that he did. He was a good character, reliable. He was a little bit late on the 26th but they came out and finished the job. They did a good job. I thought it was going to be a good job, but it ended up being even better. I was referred to them by another company named Superior Builders of Charleston. Those guys created a pretty good work environment, they kid around a little bit, but still kept it at a professional level. I enjoyed the time I had working with them.

After moving in, I quickly discovered the master shower was leaking due to at least two botched DIY installs by the previous owner. Due to the complexity of the job (combination of glass block and travertine tile ceiling to floor) I called several construction companies, each one told me that basically the whole shower needed to be replaced- one contractor said he wouldn't even attempt the job. Finally, I called Paul at Apex. He came out and assessed the situation and explained everything that had to happen and why. He was very professional and to the point. His crew arrived and quickly began to cut and remove the old tile and shower pan and liner. He pointed out the mistakes that were made and why the shower was leaking. He also explained what the team was doing and what needed to be done to bring the shower up to code. These guys did a fantastic job, they went all the way to the sub floor and worked on each layer until the last tile was set. I have to say, it was quite a relief to get this done. Paul and his crew were nothing less than amazing. They were able to remove only what needed to be removed, and tied in the old travertine tile with the new seamlessly. The crew cleaned up and made it look like nothing ever happened. I'm very impressed with the company and would highly recommend them. They took a very stressful, expensive situation and turned it into a top notch installation. I am very happy with the work that was done.

Paul and his crew did a great job. Paul responded to my request for an estimate almost immediately. He came out as scheduled to give me the estimate and the pricing was comparable to the other 2 estimates I had received. He really seems to know what he is talking about and he did an outstanding job on the tile. The project was completed as scheduled and he was very flexible with scheduling. He was able to start my project with just a few days notice (another contractor told me it would be weeks to start my project). He was very easy to get a hold of throughout the project. Overall Paul did a great job, and I highly recommend him.

I had 4 different companies come into my home and bid this project, (three of which I found on Angie's) I ended up only feeling comfortable with Paul. He immediately impressed me with his knowledge of what needed to be done on this intricate second story master bath remodel. I had other contractors tell me that a shower pan could be sloped with asphalt roofing shingles, one contractor asked me to reconsider my vision as it was going to cost too much and be to hard to complete. Aaron, another contractor, over bid my project by $6,000. I could not get a straight line of attack on how this project needed to be done until Paul walked in the door. He even went as far as measuring out the squareness of my walls to see if tile would line correctly. He was truly the only contractor that made me feel comfortable that he could complete the project correctly after leaving. My bid was verbal, he provided insurance information via email and started work 2 weeks after we agreed on terms. I provided all tile and grout, he provided mortar, glass thinset, shower bed materials and backer board in his quote. Paul was onsite working with his 2 man crew everyday, they were professional and trust worthy, on a number of occasions they were working in my home alone. I really do not have a bad comment to leave and only wish I could upload a photo so that all could truly appreciate the work him and his crew do. I would recommend his company a hundred times over and only warn you of the other Angie's contractors found on this list. I wanted to hug the lil fella when he left! I might also add that I found him as a referral from a friend that was equally as impressed with his work in a downtown Charleston home. Thank you Paul

I had used Skorshee Construction before and called Paul for an estimate on Thursday July 26th. He arrived at the scheduled time, looked at the project and gave me the estimate for material and labor. I accepted it and he said that he could start on Monday July 30th. He suggested that we use special tile that was perfectly square allowing them the make a very thin grout line which would make the final job look the best. I agreed and my wife and I then had the job to choose the tile pattern we wanted from the samples he had with him. We would let him know on Monday when they started and would choose the grout color then. They arrived on Monday and Paul went to get materials needed to get the project started including the grout we had chosen. The two men with him (Rusty and Dennis who would lay most of the tiles) moved things to one side of the room to the other so they could start laying tile on the empty side. I have pool table with a slate bed so this was no small job. This continued Tuesday through Thursday until the Den was completely tiled. On Friday, Rusty, under Paul's instructions did the remodeling of the Utility room after taking the Washer and Dryer out. Paul provided a painter to do the finishing work (mudding, sanding, priming and painting.) Although it was inconvenient for the family for a few days we were prepared to put up with it and it was will worth it. Paul, Rust and Dennis did a great job and we are totally pleased with the final results.
Description of Work: They laid ceramic tile in my Den and remodeled my Utility Room including laying tile in there and sheet rocking the ceiling and walls. They did an excellent job on both counts. The remodeling was very complex as the Water Heater and Furnace are in there. The suggestions they made really helped the outcome. They were prompt every day and stand behind their work. I have used them before and will use them again when needed.

They did a wonderful job and we are more than satisfied with the work performed. I would gladly recommend them to anyone requiring tile masonry. They are clean, polite and respectful young men and we enjoyed having them help us through a tough project. They were very dedicated and worked very hard with only a short lunch break. They only flaw in the project was that it took a two days longer than was originally planned. This is very understandable to me as you can't make an accurate time-estimate until you get the old flooring up and see what has to be done to prepare it. Also, the broken flange of the toilet caused a delay waiting for a plumber. I can honestly say that I got my Money's worth.
Description of Work: We remodeled our Kitchen and Master Bathroom. We hand already chose the Ceramic Tile and on the first day of the project they went and purchased it after they determined how much would be needed. I went with them to pick it up and paid for it so the $270.00 for the tile isn't included in expenditure shown. All the work described below was done by Paul and Jason who work for this Company. Kitchen: We had chosen to place tile under the refrigerator and stove as well as the main floor so they uninstalled these appliances and placed them in another room. They removed the old flooring in the Kitchen and replaced the fiber board under the stove with plywood. They then laid hardi-board over the entire floor followed by laying the Ceramic Tile that we had selected and purchased. They returned the following day and put in the Grout and washed it. The following day, when it Grout had dried they installed the Shoe-Molding and put back the Refrigerator and Stove and hooked them up. They even helped me replace the water filter in the Refrigerator. This took three days. Each day they cleaned up all debris and disposed of it. In the Master Bathroom, they unhooked the plumbing and removed the Vanity, Sink and Toilet. It was discovered that the Flange on the Toilet was broken so a plumber was called to replace it. They broke out the old tile (a very difficult job) and leveled the floor. At that point t the hardi-board was laid followed by the new Ceramic Tile. They returned the following day and put in the Grout. As in the Kitchen, they cleaned up all debris and disposed of it each day.
