This company pulled a fast one on me. They are a large company, so I figured they would be reliable. The service tech came to my home and inspected my unit. He told me that I needed an entirely new A/C unit. The problem turned out to be a small problem that I had already identified. They gave me a quote of $6100 to replace the unit. (I had it done by someone else for $3700.) When I called to complain, the service manager refused to take my phone calls. Their website claims that if you have a problem the President of the company, Roger Costner, "will make it right". He also refused my phone calls. Because of the bogus analysis of my unit, I spent about $3300 too much. They treated me with disrespect and apathy. Steer clear of their predatory business practices.

I shudder to think of how many gullible elderly people on fixed incomes this company has scammed. I tried contacting this company by phone 4 times on Wednesday 2 July, 2008 but none of my calls were returned. I guess when they realized that they werent getting my money they have no need to talk to me. I dont even want my 49.00 back, they can have it because I hope to make them EARN IT in the coming months. It is time that crooked service providers be held accountable so that legitimate businesses can thrive by offering honest quality services. During the conversation with the company I was assured that the system would not work for long because they didnt replace the condenser pump, clean the coils and add freon. Its been several weeks now and we have never been cooler. Put the 748.00 that I would have given them to good use.
Description of Work: The air conditioner in the lower level of my home quit working. I called this company and agreed to the 49.00 assessment fee. My wife was at home when they arrived. The service tech. stated that we needed a new condensation pump (295.00), both units needed coil cleaning (108.00 each), oil and Freon (169.00) and offered up a service warranty (179.88). With labor the total would be $748.80. My wife ALMOST wrote the check but called me at work first. I suspected something was wrong so I had her pay the 49.00 and declined the other "services" opting instead to contact an independent AC inspector. The inspector promptly came to my home and tested the Freon and found it was within normal limits. He then checked the "broken" condensation pump and found that it was merely clogged with sediment which was rinsed out and replaced in 15 minutes in perfect working order! Next he showed me what a 216.00 "coil cleaning" involved by taking a garden hose and a brush and cleaning the coils of the grass and dust that the service tech. was so concerned with.

He does good work. He is a super nice guy and is very courteous. He will give you a specific appointment time. He is very knowledgeable. No matter how hidden the problem is, he will work until he finds the problem before he tries to fix it.

I fell for the fancy advertising and began working with Brothers Costner soon after my wife and I moved to Charlotte from New Jersey. I purchased a service contract for maintenance of my heating and cooling systems. Later, I purchased a central humidifier and an Energy Miser Air Scubber A/C Duct Air Purification System for more than $1,000. The lovely 4-color brochure had in a huge headline "Complete Money Back Guarantee!" The smaller print said the guarantee was for 30 days. The following year I realized the system required buying 3 replacement air filters at a cost of more than $60 each (just under $200 with tax), which the company "highly recommended" every 6 months. No where in the brochure, or otherwise, was I informed of the additional annual cost of almost $400 to maintain this system. Ive had highly effective electrostatic filters in two other homes and did just fine with normal filters on my air intakes. Ive learned Brothers pays Honeywell about $32 for the filters. Ive learned my system will work fine with standard filters I can buy for less than $15 each, if I change them more frequently, i.e. every three months or sooner. When I complained to the technician about being ripped off on the filters, he just laughed at me. The technician was arrogant and acted like he could not care less whether I continued doing business with the company or not (I will not). About a year after I bought the air purification system, I had Brothers install a central humidifier for me. Several weeks after the installation I discovered a pool of water in my crawlspace. My plumber showed me how the Brothers technician had made a pin-hole in my water pipe when the humidifier was installed. I had to replace a valve and section of pipe, and Brothers reimbursed me -- after much haggling, for about half of my repair cost. This company spends a fortune on advertising and marketing, but charges premium prices and does not deliver. In addition, their technicians range from excellent to incompetent. I cant afford the latter anymore. I need to locate an honest, fair contractor who will provide consistently competent service. I regret having done business with the Costner Brothers and would definitely want others to steer clear.
Description of Work: In 2006, after moving to Charlotte, I purchased contract for heating and cooling service. On initial service, the technician failed to clean and service one of my two condensing units properly. After complaining, the company sent another tech who did the job correctly. The following year I purchased an Energy Miser Air Filtration System for $1,100. The company did not inform the system would require special Honeywell air filters to be replaced twice a year. The company pays approximately $32 for the filters and sells them for double the cost. The result is a cost of nearly $400 a year to replace 3 air filters, which are only available through contractors. This additional cost was not in any of the fancy literature on this air cleaner, nor was it disclosed to me before I purchased the air cleaner. Ive had electrostatic air cleaners installed at two other homes, and never confronted this situation before, as regular replacement of standard air filters, which can be purchase for $15 or less, was all that was required. Whats more, Brothers sold me a service contract on my two systems for $385 a year. When they came to do the service, however, the tech did not bring the 3 filters they recommend. He said he would have them shipped to me and I could install them myself. I declined, and will not do business with this company again.

However, when calling Brothers Air & Heat they stated they would not service my area even though in Angies List they indicate they do. Im only a couple miles out of the service area, they said they would cover when I called them. They also did not offer another referral and Im sitting in 95 degree heat with a broken air conditioner.

They ended up replacing a capacitor. They did fix satisfactorily. I really did not have anything to compare to compare pricing too. It sounded too pricey but again I have nothing to base it on. I have had no problems with anything since the quality was good.

From initial call to completion of job I dealt with professionals. Ms. Peggy took my call, she determined the availability of a service technician, scheduled a time frame I could live with and insured I would get a call prior to arrival. Mr. Matt Rutland called and arrived prior to coordinated time. He was pleasant, informative, helpful, clean and quick. Matt gets a BIG THUMBS UP! Peggy too. Because of the good experience I had with Brothers Air and their staff I am going to sign up for their Partnership plan. They won me over and I to am in the service industry.
Description of Work: Respond to outage, determine problem, determine availability of required parts, pick up parts, return and install parts. Check for proper functionality. Problem: combustion exhaust motor assembly and pressure switch.

Matt Rutland returned my call to the company within an hour and was over at 8:15 on a Friday night as our heat was out and an expected low temp night. He showed up within an hour of calling me back. He went right to work, took him 45 minutes and all was done exceedingly well. He cleaned up very well. He replaced the coupler unit and also cleaned some of the burners. This is a Carrier Gas Furnace that is 17 years old and never been professionally serviced. I appreciate the extra care he took in checking over the unit. He did advise me that a new furnace will probably be needed in 2-3 years at most. Very professional and great work ethic.
Description of Work: Pilot light would not stay lit on gas furnace after several attempts.

The techs arrived on schedule and completed the work in less than three hours, They took the time to explain the new unit and the new thermostat operation. Excellent!
Description of Work: We had repeated problems with our Gas PAC Air Conditioner. We previously needed to have the Heat Exchanger, relays and motors replaced in prior years (by Brothers). Well, finally our unit took its final dive, and we had to get a new 5 ton unit. The technician outlined several options and offered what he stated was the best deal for the price. We got estimates earlier this year, as a precautionary plan and Brothers pricing was competitive. It included installation, ductwork rework, gas attachment and new thermostat. We would definitely use them again!

Discovered the problem at 5PM. Checked Angies List, and placed immediate phone call to Brothers. Call was returned within 15 minutes by Todd Brown. However, since we had no maintenance contract with them, repair was not able to be performed that evening. Called early the next morning and received confirmation call from Todd that he was within one hour of arriving. He arrived sooner, diagnosed the problem as bad transformer on air handler, plus a bad condensate pump. He replaced the transformer and condensate pump and then inspected and ran the system. He added a pound of freon and the A/C ran and cooled very well. He also helped me understand how to better maintain the cooling efficiency of the unit by clearing grass and shrubs from too near the outdoor condenser and fan blades. UPDATE: 12/5/2011: Now have a monthly service agreement for twice a year maintenance and tune-up. During this semi-annual inspection, tech found that only 50% of heating elements were working properly. We concurred. After thorough cleaning and testing of the air handler and heat pump (free with service agreement) and with new part installed, it was definitely warmer when heat turned on in home, Tech was very knowledgeable, polite, mannerly and had a "teacher's heart", by that I mean he educated me on the best tips to keep the equipment in top notch condition. He showed me the schedule of pricing for the part he replaced, and with the maintenance agreement it was one-third less. Very happy with the service and professionalism.
Description of Work: Air Conditioner would not operate and wife was overheating. UPDATE: 12/1/2011: Brothers scheduler called to set up the semi-annual FREE maintenance and tune-up service per a service contract. I mentioned that the heating seemed less than expected.

Stan arrived right at the appointment time. He made sure he left the house as neat and clean as when he found it. Along with his testing and inspection, he washed our system. I mean he actually cleaned it with soap and water to keep it looking and performing like new.

Our A/C had stopped working in the middle of the heat wave. Brothers technician came out and determined that the drain line had gotten clogged with a tiny bit of insulation from in the attic. This was a new heat pump that they had installed for us in December of last year. Our old a/c was dying and we changed it out at a slow time. They linked it to our gas furnace to make a hybrid system. It has been wonderful! Also, they installed a float as a safety so that the condensation pan would not overflow into our ceiling.
Description of Work: Cleared and cleaned out the drain line in the attic. Checked and cleaned the outside unit. Let us know what we needed to do to keep the unit running well. It was 104F. We have 3 small kids and it would have been nice if they could have come out sooner, but thankfully we have ceiling fans! He came when promised though.

I was very satisfied with the work performed. The installation crew (Willie and Eddie) arrived on time, confirmed the work to be performed, and completed the job without issue. I was impressed at their ability to remain focused on the job given the outdoor temperature was 96+ degrees and the Im sure the attic was even hotter. In my case, they were able to keep the system running for the majority of the installation which meant I was able to keep my cool! The only issues I encountered was because of a misunderstanding between Darryn (the service technician) and I during our initial consultation regarding the number of thermostats to be installed and the Honeywell zone controller. This was promptly corrected and wouldnt disway me from using the companys services again. The Honeywell controller has a purge function that restarts the fan after the thermostat is satisfied shutting the fan off. There is an audible thump. The restarts may cause extra wear on the system.
Description of Work: Company installed a Honeywell Multi-zone controller, replaced thermostats, and installed a return air duct to a bonus room.

I got 3 bids, Brothers was not the least expensive, however research on them from Angies list, BBB, and personal recommendations convinced me they were right for this job. So far, they have validated my choice. Larry helped me understand the choices, priced each and provided data on each. The unit matched the quote, they were on time, installed the system to code, cleaned up and so far, all is fine. Local code inspector passed the installation. Needed one service call - a solenoid needed replacement, they came within 3 hours of the call to the office and replaced it the next day. I highly recommend Brothers to anyone needing HVAC work.

Robbie Johnson (technician assigned) arrived as scheduled -- he even called ahead to inform me that he was coming. Robbie was extremely professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. Although not required, he did put covers on his shoes to keep the floor and carpet clean. Robbie made a point of explaining everything that he was doing; and, also, informed me of the companys services that were available. He presents as a very dedicated and invested employee of the company and does, himself, have a highly trained background. The companys yearly service plan is, indeed, a valuable offering and well worth the investment. I would highly recommend this firm -- and Robbie as well.

This was the second job performed by Wes who seems to service the Concord area. He was professional, polite, and on time. Very good about thoroughly explaining what he was doing. One of the best service companies Ive worked with. Very happy to recommend Brothers services in Concord! Would definitely use again.
Description of Work: Gas pack not heating. Fan rusted to housing and control board blew resistor set when I tried to start heat in the fall. Replaced combustion assembly and control board. Inspected heat exchanger. Removed and cleaned burner jets - burnished flame sensor and electrodes.

Brothers did a very nice job as usual. This is the third time we have hired them to perform maintenance on our units and they did an excellent job once again. They arrived on time and in uniform. Every time the technician entered the house, he would put on shoe covers to keep from getting anything on our floors. After servicing each unit, he would report back to me how the system looked and if he needed to make any repairs or recommendations on future items that may need replaced. He also recommended that we sign up for their bi-annual service plan (which saved us money) based on what the bill was going to be for that day. Another plus, is the wireless computer setup the technicians have. He was able to access our records from the previous maintenance visit and see the notes the last technician left about one of our units. Based on those notes, the technician knew exactly what to check and found that he did need to make a quick repair. They will get all our future business.

It went very well; Jason was very thorough, neat, and carefully explained everything that needed to be done. There were absolutely no surprises.
Description of Work: It was discovered that I had unusually high humidity readings in my home and a de-humidifier needed to be installed. The mister that is part of the heating component was also out of order. To complete the installation, some of the ducts had to be repositioned.
