My air conditioner went out on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend and I called Carolina Heating Service to get someone to come out and repair it. They said they could come out during regular business hours (which would be Tuesday due to the holiday) for $105 or come out the same day for their after-hours rate of $195. There was no way I was going to wait until Tuesday and so I happily paid the $195. The customer service person told me to turn off the air conditioner but turn on the fan, which I did. The service technician arrived soon afterwards. So far so good, but that's where the story goes downhill. The technician took a look at the outside unit, then went into my attic to see the inside unit. He then told me that the inside unit was frozen solid and that he couldn't do any diagnotics until it was thawed out. My options were to either pay him $305 to stay and thaw it or I could simply continue to run the fan until it thawed in a few hours. Oh, and by the way, it will cost another $50 for him to return to do the diagnotics. Oh, and also by the way, he won't be coming until Tuesday even though I paid for emergency after-hours service. So, within 15 minutes I'm out $195 (you pay up-front), I still don't have a working air conditioner, and still don't know what's wrong with it. I called the customer service person back and explained that I needed to schedule a return service trip and asked that they waive the return service charge. She said she would talk to the manager and let me know on Tuesday. Well after having a toasty few days to think about the situation I decided why should I reward a business that treats their customers this way. I mean they should have taken care of me later that evening or on Monday morning, NOT Tuesday and certainly NOT for an additonal charge. I paid for emergency service! So I called them on Tuesday and politely explained how their policies are not very customer friendly. I also said that if they know that a unit can be frozen why don't they try to avoid a useless service call by asking a few questions. Then they can schedule the call when the technician can actually do something. The customer service person pretty much just wanted to re-explain why they couldn't do the diagnostics and also defend the reasoning for a return service charge. She did finally get the return service charge waived later, but I decided to cancel my appointment. I would rather give my business to anyone else. The people that I dealt with were courteous. But they are having to enforce policies that, if they would simply think about it from the customer's perspective, they would see are very unfair. I should have had service later that evening or at the very least the next day and at no additional charge. Instead, I had to wait two days and had to fight to have the return fee waived. It shouldn't be this hard to do business with someone.

Sales rep BJ gave us good options for replacing an 18-year-old system. He was patient and understanding of our financial situation and helped us find an affordable solution. The two installers Craig and Chase did an excellent job of removing the old stuff and setting up the new in a long, long day of working in some tight spaces. The two of them never took a lunch break, putting in nearly 10 hours of solid effort, then cleaned up, removed all the waste, and spread a layer of mulch around the new condenser before leaving. I wholeheartedly recommend this company!
Description of Work: Carolina Heating has worked closely with me on the HVAC needs of seven properties belonging to my family over the past decade. During that time they have been very attentive to my home-bound and disabled parents, keeping their 60 year old heating system running and performing prompt, after-hours repairs on their vital cooling system. They also helped me keep 12 tenants comfortable for a number of years. Their prices have been competitive and their workmanship excellent. This month we've had a new 3-ton HVAC system installed in my daughter's home and are completely satisfied with the job.

They are fine. They are very efficient and stay in contact. The only thing we have them do is maintenance check every year. It is an annual fee and included. They are always on time. They are very professional. They take care of it and they are gone. All of them are too expensive financially, but they are no more than anyone else.

Our A/C quit working and we had Carolina Heating Service come out on a Saturday. We have a maintenance contract. We were charged for the weekend service call, but then were charged an extra $74 to find a leak a leak in the evaporator coil. We think that the service call should include diagnosing the problem. We got an estimate for the repair which was higher than the high end of Angie's list pricing guide, even though the coil was covered under warranty. We got the repair done by another company for half of the Carolina Heating Service estimate. Carolina Heating Service installed the unit a little over two years ago.

I took some vacation time so I could be home during the appointment. They called and said they were running ahead of schedule and wanted to come early so we agreed. I was out working in the yard and saw their van drive by, I assumed they missed our house and would turn back around. A few minutes later they drove back by and called my wife to say they couldn't make it due to an emergency. I call bs on that one. They rescheduled for the following week and once I received an estimate for the work, I never heard from them again. Sounds like they didn't want my business, so they won't get it again.

We decided to convert our hot water tank from electric to gas. Carolina Heating did the necessary work to bring the existing natural gas line to where it needed to be to hook up the new hot water tank, installed the tank, cleaned up after the work was done, and even corrected a totally unrelated plumbing issue that they discovered while under the house working on the hot water tank conversion and install. I also received a veteran's discount for the job.

We have a program that we bought into with them. It's a heating and air maintenance program. There was no cost. We bought into a program that is $410 per year and it covers 2 maintenance calls per year. It's great. They are very good to work with. They do a really good job. I can get right through and get to someone. We are going to use them again. There were 2 workers. They were here about 2 hours. The area was perfectly clean. Never knew they were here.

Since my bonus room was unfinished, I asked if the lines from the inside unit could be placed inside the walls to the outside condenser. I was told "sure, no problem". Well, there were problems! Won't go into all of the details here, but knowing what I know now, I would have never asked the question. I still gave a good rating because of Kris who was the installer/technician that finished the installation. Kris and helper Chase did their best to make sure that I was happy with the completed installation. Both were professional, courteous and wanted to made sure that I was satisfied before leaving.

Starting with their sales team on to their install and maintenance teams they provided excellent service all the way through the project. Some of the work was done while we were away and they provided pictures of the work as they progressed. The equipment they installed was top notch along with their excellent recommendations and support. They decided half way through the project that I would be better off with the next level up Waterfurnace and they provided this to me at no additional cost. They performed followup calls to make sure everything was going OK and their alert system notified them that there might be a glitch and they called to schedule a visit to take a look but all was OK once they checked it out. They even provided a followup survey a few months after the install to make sure I was satisfied with their service.

They're expensive, they really are. I believe that Carolina Heating & Air thinks that they're going to sell me my next air conditioner, but I've got news for them, they're not. I actually purchased a whole house generator from them about four years ago. That thing, wasn't cheap. I signed up for a maintenance agreement for them to come out and service it last year and if I had to have any repairs, they would knock so much off. But they are very, very expensive. So when it comes time to get me a new air conditioner, it's not going to be purchased through Carolina Heating & Air. They are so expensive and they're expanding out into Geothermal stuff and solar stuff. You know what happens when companies expand, the service in other areas start to get slack. It hasn't yet, but I see it coming in the future. They just get too big for their britches, they really do. I was pleased with them, they've got one technician that I ask for every time. He is efficient, he is amenable, he gets the job done and I like him. That's the one I ask for. As a matter of fact, I schedule my appointments around him. If he can't see me, then unless there is an emergency, I just wait until he has an opening in my area. That's how much I like that one technician. It's $500 a year, for the generator and the heating and air conditioning agreement. It's kind of pricey, but you're supposed to get priority service over people who don't have it. I really like that they call you and let you know that they're on their way out. If something should happen and they can't make it in the time frame, they will call you. I really like that. Old folks like stuff like that. Younger folks like it too for that matter because time is very valuable to younger folks.

We use Carolina Heating and Air for our spring and fall HVAC maintenance. We contacted Carolina Heating and Service after reading the reviews on Angie's List. They came out and assessed our antique heating/ AC system and gave us a price that included an year in their maintenance program, a programmable thermostat and vapor barrier installation in the crawl space. They came out a week or so later and installed the system and vapor barrier. The thermostat wasn't working so they came out a week after that to do a check up and install a new thermostat. We upgraded the programmable thermostat for a few dollars more and now have a wonderful thermostat that does everything but sing and dance. The HVAC system is very quiet and efficient. Since this house is new to us, we don't know what the differences in the utility bills are, but it's got to be better than the 1993 system we had. We are looking forward to being warm and toasty during our first upstate winter.

I called due to excess drainage on the exterior of my home and routine AC service. While the drain problem was unrelated to the AC, which Aaron kindly explained, I received guidance on my next steps. The AC service was fast, high quality and Aaron also provided great recommendations for maintenance and safety. Scheduling was fast, an unexpected surprise, and he was at the front door faster than promised. Highly positive service experience!

Carolina Heating Service was recommended to me by a family member, with the disclaimer "Their prices aren't the lowest, but they do great work." And that statement pretty much sums up my experience with them, too. My AC quit working properly on a hot day in late July. I noticed it was very hot in the house when I came home for my lunch break and immediately sent a message to Carolina Heating Service via Angie's List. A friendly dispatcher called me back within an hour and had me on the schedule for the same day. She was upfront about the cost for the service call so I knew what to expect when the technician arrived. Technician (Aaron) arrived exactly when he said he would, was very friendly and answered all my questions patiently and thoroughly. The issue with my AC ended up being routine and easily fixable, and he had it up and running for me again in no time. I asked a lot of questions, so he also gave me a lot of good advice about how to maintain my AC system and recommended services without being a pushy salesman about it. The invoice for the repair ended up being a bit steep, although I honestly haven't had to get a lot of AC work done so I don't have much to compare their prices to. Either way, I'm satisfied that the issue was repaired quickly and everyone I dealt with during the process was very pleasant and knowledgeable. The experience was a good one overall.

It turned out very well. Very professional guys. Did more than any other heating company had done. They not only checked everything, they actually changed my filters and provided new filters. I have a plan with them which includes 2 visits a year where they come in and do a maintenance check on the system. It also gives me the ability that if God forbid something go wrong, I get emergency visits. Super polite, very quick to respond. They call you to let you know. They send a calendar to let you keep track of what needs to be done. Honestly when I first bought it I thought, wow, this is a lot of money because it was $100 more than the service I had before but I really regard it as well worth it. Sometimes you get what you pay for. We've renewed them after our first contract expired.
