The shingles were not the color that I had picked out. I met Tom @Lowe's on a Sunday morning to pick the color for the shingle. I told Tom light tan was to light and the dark tan was to dark and everything to the left of the dark tan was to dark. A medium tan was what I wanted and bottom line...no dark roof. He said he could get the shingles either at G&S or ABC Roofing because they would be a better quality shingle. After his team started laying the shingles, I walked out to look and was shocked to see dark shingles. I explained to Tom they weren't even close to what I picked out and he threw his arms in the air and became agitated. I was frightened by his actions and allowed the work to continue. I paid Tom on Jan,11,2012 with check number 2706 for the amount of $2,300. Afterwards, I asked a friend of mine who is a roofer, to check their work. He informed me of some concerns. When I called Tom with those concerns, he yelled so loudly, I had to remove the phone from my ear. He was very upset that I had a roofer check his work. The concerns were, uneven edging, caps on the edging where water would drip on the wooden facia board and no drip edge. Tom stopped returning my phone calls. Tom had Scott, one of the laborers, call me to inform me Tom was going on a cruise and it would be at least 10 days before they could do anything. In the meantime, I had a builder's permit and I called the number on the permit. I got Dan Ligon of Southern Craftsman Construction which is the company on the permit. I informed Dan I wanted to make a formal complaint against Tom Trosky. Dan listened to my concerns, came out to look at my concerns and he said I was right. Dan told me he would get Tom and Scott to correct my concerns after Tom returns from his cruise. Dan and Tom came out to listen to my concerns. Tom had an outburst in front of Dan and I told Dan that is what I have to deal with which I shouldn't have to deal with that. Dan said he would have a talk with Tom. Dan reassured me he would get the work done but he couldn't make me happy but he would try to satisfy me. Tom and Scott used roofing tar to fill the gaps so water wouldn't drip on the facia board, installed a drip edge on the utility room where there was very uneven edging(sloppy laying of the shingles). They had to return to install a drip edge on the back 2nd floor roof line..again to stop water from dripping on wood. I told Dan that I didn't think it was fair that I should have to live with and pay for Tom's mistake ie, picking the wrong color. I also stated Dan's policy of only wanting to satisfy the customer wasn't a good business practice. Dan said he thought long and hard about what I said and he agreed with me. Dan said he would talk to Tom with a proposal of splitting the cost and reshingle my roof with the color I want. Tom refuses to do anything. Dan's next offer was for me to buy the shingles and he would have someone install them free of labor charge. I told Dan it was unacceptable because this is all Tom's fault. Update: There is always a first time... Fact: Tom Trosky and I went to Lowe's to pick a color for the shingles. I said light tan was to light and dark tan was dark. Tom Trosky bought Burnt Sienna, which is much darker than dark tan. Fact: As I stated, I did tell Tom Trosky on day 2, the shingles weren't even close to what I wanted but with his bad reaction, arms flying in the air and a very intimidating tone in his voice, I was afraid of what he would do so I allowed the work to continue. Fact: I walked on egg shells while the job continued. I did pay for the job when he came over by himself because I wasn't sure what this man was capable of if I mentioned how unhappy I was with the shingles. They are to dark and busy, clashing with the brick facade. I'm a single woman living alone on a fixed income. Fact: Days later,Tom Trosky yelled at me over the phone that I had someone check his work who found legitimate concerns. It took weeks to finally get those issues resolved since Tom stop returning my phone calls and I had to call the number on the builder's permit. That's when I found Dan Ligon, owner of Southern Craftsman Construction. And Dan Ligon even said, it was a good thing I reached him because I could still be trying to reach Tom Trosky. Fact: Dan Ligon lead me to believe that the shingles would be replaced after he agreed with me that I shouldn't have to live with and pay for Tom Trosky's mistake, though Tom would have to agree to splitting the cost with Dan Ligon. Tom refused. Fact: I called the South Carolina Department of Labor,Licensing and Regulation. I spoke with Roderick T. Atkinson, Complaint Analyst. Mr. Atkinson informed me Tom Trosky doesn't have a contractor's license. In the state of SC one can work under someone else's contractor's license. And it is that person's responsibility to "fix" things. Per the state of SC it is Dan Ligon's(he has the contractor's license and is the owner) responsibility to replace my shingles or refund my money. The final decision is not up to Tom Trosky. It is up to Dan Ligon period. Who is the boss here? Dan Ligon is. And Dan Ligon agreed with me I shouldn't have to live with Tom's mistake therefore, I want either a $2,100 refund and or re-shingle my roof with the color of my choice. If Southern Craftsman Construction re-shingles my roof, it would not be a free roof. This is a matter of principle. Tom Trosky should pay for his mistake and his bad behavior. Update as of June 15, 2012 I made one more attempt in hopes of resolving the matter with the color of shingles and Tom Trosky's bad behavior. I asked my brother Don, a retired investigator, to call Dan Ligon. Don asked Dan if he would consider splitting the cost of the shingles with me since he offered to do that if Tom would agree to split the cost with him. After several days Dan called my brother back with his answer of no. Dan re-offered if I pay for the shingles, he would find someone to re-shingle my roof at no charge. My answer is no since I have already paid for the shingles. They did discuss Tom and his actions. My brother said Dan thinks highly of Tom and feels it is simply a personality conflict. Also, Dan isn't going to do anything about it. Of course, it's Tom's word against my word. I don't have any witnesses to back me. However, I do have a witness, as in Dan, the day Tom had his worst outburst. Dan asked Tom what I was saying was true? When I met Tom at Lowe's to pick out the color...The light tan was to light, dark tan was to dark, everything to the left of the dark tan was to dark...I want a medium tan...bottom line, I do not want a dark roof. I never heard a yes or no from Tom. He lost his temper. I told Dan that is what I have to deal with and I shouldn't have to deal with it !! Now I have a standard quality dark roof which is also ugly thanks to Tom Trosky's intimidating tone in his voice when he is aggravated. I stand behind everything I have said and or have written is true. The old saying...what comes around, goes around. I know it will.
Description of Work: He started work on January 3rd and completed the work on January 5th. I paid him $2,100 for a roof repair, including replacing shingles and some damaged sheeting. I also paid him $50 for the permit and $150 for some work he did on my fence.

Response from Southern Craftsman Construction
Our company has replaced over 100 roofs during the last 27 years and has had no reports of dissatisfaction. We have never had a customer request a new free roof a few weeks after paying us as agreed for a roof replacement. Our superintendent, Tom Trosky, was glad to discount our normal insurance rate of $235 per square for this job by 50% as a consideration to the customer. There was absolutely no intimidation when collecting the final payment. We are sorry for her dissatisfaction but the time to discuss this isuse was during the three day installation process when she first saw the shingles. Dan Ligon-Owner
