We brought a chair into Empire to get reupholstered. My wife purchased it from Salvation Army for $40. It was old and in rough condition. At first, Joey the owner was not in the shop. A woman who works there gave us a bunch of sample materials to look through. She did not the prices of any of them. So, my wife picked out one she liked. The next day Joey called to give her a price. It was expensive. She said we would come back and pick out a fabric less expensive. He than told her he would call the supplier and see if he could get a better price on the fabric. I guess he did because the price went down a couple of dollars. He asked for a $200 deposit so my wife gave him her credit card number for that. I picked the chair up the a week later. Paid Joey the balance by credit card. The work done was very good. The chair looks great. However for the cost of getting this chair redone I could have bought a brand new one. I felt it was overpriced.
Description of Work: Reupholstered chair.

My daughter talked with Joey and he had given her a price of $750 for reupholstering a sofa. We took the sofa there yesterday and Joey looked at it but said nothing regarding the estimate. We talked for quite a while, my daughter being very enthusiastic about getting the work done and complementary regarding a recommendation from a colleague. We also mentioned that she might have additional pieces to have reupholstered. It was a very friendly conversation. Joey showed us pictures of work he had done, and we chatted. Somewhere in that chatting Joey mentioned that his sister had been in Africa, and I mentioned that my daughter had also been there. She clarified this by saying that she had a dear friend whose husband had been there on a one-year fellowship and she had been invited to stay with her and thus only had had to pay for the air fare. Joey suddenly said that he was going to raise the estimate for the work to $1000, because the sofa had 4 legs instead of two. My daughter and I were stunned, however she said nothing. She decided to continue with the job because the recommendation she had had been very positive. She gave Joey a check. Afterwards, she told me that she felt that he had raised the price because I had mentioned that she had been to Africa, and that she saw a light go on in his eyes when I mentioned that and that immediately afterwards Joey announced that he was raising the price. She felt that he thought she was wealthy (not the case) and that was why he raised the price. Anyway, whether or not this was the reason for the sudden announcement that the price was going up by 1/3 over the phone estimate, be ware that the estimate Joey gives you over the may change greatly once you bring in the furniture. And in this case for what was the flimsiest of reasons, and after talking with him for more than 15 minutes.
Description of Work: After receiving an estimate over the phone, we brought in the sofa to be upholstered.

It was easy to schedule and it wasn't a front burner issue. He called less than a week later to say that they were ready. He saved the scraps from other jobs to do the bean bags. We are going to use them again.
Description of Work: We used Empire Upholstery for two different jobs. One was in September and the other around Christmas. We had some old bean bags that were very nice and he filled them and sewed the holes. We didn't want the beans anymore so he chopped up foam and put that in them.
