Called this company for an estimate because of the overwhelmingly good reviews here on Angie's List. Received bids from two other companies as well. This was the middle of the three bids. I spoke to the office manager, Cindy, who was pleasant and professional and we scheduled them to come out, view the job, and give me an estimate. After the estimate, I got really busy with life and didn't follow up with any of the companies. Cindy continued to persistently, yet gently, call me with reminders that I'd need approval from the Town of Mt. Pleasant to remove a tree this size. I took care of all of that and left the country for a two week vacation. I called and scheduled the work upon my return. Rain got in the way of the date we had set for earlier in the week and we had a Plan B for next week. Midmorning today, a beautiful sunny Saturday, the owner, Chris Nicholas, called me and asked if there was a possibility that they could complete the job today and I said sure! A team of seven guys and all of the equipment arrived mid-day. They were a study in teamwork and precision! Some were working on bringing down the tree, others were carrying the limbs to be fed into the chipper, others were cleaning up behind themselves every step of the way. The stump was completely ground down, they then worked on the couple of places where big limbs had fallen on the ground until you couldn't seen any sign of it at all. It took them only 50 minutes to take down this huge tree and not much more than the same amount of time to get the stump out, cut up the huge trunk and finish everything up. Wouldn't know anyone had been here if not for the chips over the area that the stump was. Complete professionals that were impressive to watch! Great work everyone!
Description of Work: Removal and disposal of a large Black Cherry Laurel tree that was close to the house. Over the years, it's gotten so big that the root system is now disturbing the foundation of the house and causing stair step cracks in the bricks.

**READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY THE OWNER CALLED, BERATED ME FOR 41 SECONDS AND HUNG UP.** The work completed on 5/29/14 went well. I had no complaints with the quality of the work, although it did take some time to receive the proposal and have the work completed. It took a couple of weeks to receive the proposal. After I returned the proposal on May 3 the work was completed May 29. Chris was free to work when he wanted as the home was unoccupied. He was paid immediately. The problems began with my second proposal. I called Chris out to another home I was in contract to purchase. He furnished a proposal to trim several trees. I was clear with Chris that I was supposed to close but there were issues on the seller's side. Needless to say the closing date dragged on for over 3 months. Chris' secretary began following up routinely, in one instance sending an email, text message and voicemail within minutes of each other. I replied the same day indicating closing had been delayed. The phone calls continued, to the point where I stated on three separate occasions that I would call them when I had any further developments. The calls continued (obviously). Other than one call, I personally answered each and every one of these calls and spoke politely with his secretary. I did everything short of being so rude as to say "stop calling me". I cannot be any more clear than, "I will call you when there is a change." Finally I became so frustrated that I solicited a second proposal from another company on 5/22/15. Today, 5/27/15, I received yet another call from Chris' secretary "following up". I politely explained that I would not be requiring their services (I was happy to end the phone call there). The secretary pressed as to why I wouldn't need their services and I explained I decided to use another company (again, I was happy to end the phone call there). The secretary pressed further and I explained that I had stated I would call them when I had a change in closing status, yet they continued to call me. She thanked me and stated she would "certainly relay my concern to Chris". Thirty minutes later I received a phone call from Chris wherein he berated me for 41 seconds and promptly hung up. I politely tried to interrupt and see if he knew the entire situation (always willing to give the benefit of the doubt, I wondered if what I had said and what Chris was told were the same thing), but he kept rambling on. The phone call consisted of repeated "for you to refer to our following up as harassment...", "I cannot believe you are so low as to consider our following up harassment...", "I can't believe you reneged on a contract...", "don't ever call me again, I wouldn't touch you with a 10-foot pole..." Since I couldn't speak to you on the phone like a gentleman, Chris, please see my reply below: I *never* used the word "harass" or "harassment", that is your (or your secretary's) assessment of the situation. My problem is with you failing to respect your customer's wishes or follow simple instructions. We do not have a contract. I did not hire you on your verbal proposal, nor did I have any standing to hire you for a property I did not own. You furnished a written proposal on 3/2/15 to which I replied I could not sign until I owned the home. It was never signed. I did not reneg. Lastly, Chris, the feeling is mutual. I too would never do business with you again. Had you behaved like a professional on the phone we could have worked on the next project. Being a businessman myself, I understand that business is just that. Unlike yourself, I always carry myself in a professional manner; always looking toward the next project. There being no shortage of quality tree companies in Charleston, your ultimatum is mere bravado and without consequence to me. Your consequence is this review.

Response from Charleston Stump Stompers and Tree Service
We do 1000"s of free estimates a year and have for 26 years. There is a procedure that we use to follow up on the free estimates we provide that is logical, efficient and very normal for people in business that go out and competitively bid jobs. This man's process was only prolonged because of his own problems with closing on a house and his inability to be honest about his intentions with this job. He might have forgotten that he called upon us, this time as a second time, to consult about tree work, provide an estimate and, according to him, to do the job once he closed on this house. That is the information from which we operated. We, of course, had every reason to believe he would use our company again and no way to know he would not ... unless he were to tell us otherwise. Instead he said he would like us to do the job as soon as he closed on the house. We took him for his word and did not require he sign and return the written agreement immediately since he did not officially own the house yet. Our question is why didn't he be honest with us when we called him to check in once a month? We only ever called him once a month, as our prices are good for 30 days to take into account growing seasons, any additions or changes in the landscape that might affect our work, etc. We kept this person's price the same because he was a previous customer who had extenuating circumstance. Had he been up front and honest, he would have called us when he closed on the house and decided to have another company do the work or at least let our office manager know such when she called to check-in. We are a lot of amazing things, but we are not clairvoyant. Typically, and in 95% of all cases, we only ever do one follow-up call. And further, 80% of our estimates become jobs during that one follow-up call because we are a conscientious, thorough, expert tree service with a great reputation and proud of a friendly and efficient office staff. The rest of this man’s review, including his version of a conversation is, at best, a fictional story to harm our business, or get people to read his drama, as evidenced by his catch-phrase in caps at the beginning of this depiction. We are sorry if he feels badly and maybe has his own issues with having not dealt with us honestly and not telling us up front or in a timely fashion that he had decided to have another company do this work. There perhaps are those who struggle with telling the truth and would rather say “call me back” and then string it all out, which is what we now think he did with us once he decided he was going to have another company do this work. The process of folks getting other estimates is obviously a part of the bidding process we deal with every day and does not bother us at all. Most go through that process in a relatively short period of time and let us know their decision when we call. We invite you to read our many reviews and know that 26 years is a long time to remain successfully in business if we practiced the kind of behavior and spoke the words that this customer has chosen to parlay to the public. We are glad that we do get the opportunity to respond. Thank you for your time to read our side.

BUYER BEWARE! I selected this company because of their good reviews. Even though they had the highest quote I went with them because of the reviews and recommendations from friends who have used stump stompers. This company does ok for trimming trees but you better hope they don't damage your property in the process. i as well as the foreman witnessed the crew destroying some of my expensive landscape lights. The owner would not contact me, so after 12 days I called him. He berated me and would not acknowledge any responsibility. I wasn't even asking for replacement, but rather assistance in repair. Ultimately, he said I can sue him and he hung up on me. I was shocked. I would have expected such a higher level of professionalism. He did not even return multiple contacts from the BBB. My advice is, if you use this company, make sure you are 100% satisfied before you pay them in full. They will NOT come back later and make it good. BUYER BEWARE

Very well, professional courteous service. Dennis came out to do the estimate. He came out with crew at work start. Then returned during the day to ensure the work was being done to our liking. The crew was careful to move yard items clear of the work areas and returned then to their spots when the work was complete.

Contacted them on Friday about broken branch and concern over rest of tree. Chris came out on Tuesday and looked at the tree and broken branch. Said tree looked good and that it was a problem with just the one branch. Had a crew there on Friday. They removed the broken limb, about. 12 inch diameter and 25 foot up. Cleaned up and removed all the smaller debris and left the larger chunks for us to burn in our fire pit, Also fertilized around the tree. Everyone was professional and courteous. This is the second time we have used them and they will definitely get my business in the future.

They came and got right to work. They checked with me on the trees to be trimmed and what I expected. They were here for only a few hours. They did the work and cleaned the yards (mine and my neighbors) from the debris that comes with trimming and tree removal. Chris, the owner, came and checked the work. The next day I found out that the irrigation system had been damaged in one area where the tree had been removed. I contacted the office and they said someone would come by to check it. This is the only area where I could find fault. They did not come back until a 10 days later and I had to remind them via e-mail that I was waiting for them to come back. They did come then and it was repaired (on a weekend). All in all, I was very pleased with the work and consider the long delay in fixing the irrigation pipe an oversight by a company with a very busy workload.

I used Charleston Stump Stompers and Tree Service to remove an extremely tall pine tree from my yard. They showed up at my house with a large crew of people. I didn't count, but if I had to guess there were at least seven personnel. They finished the work in about two hours. They did an excellent job cleaning up. I could barely tell they had been in the yard, except for the fact the tree was gone! I was thoroughly pleased with their service and will use them again when I need this kind of work done.

Chris came to house as scheduled and spent a good bit of time with me then studying the job and its logistics. He documented everything we talked about and gave me the estimate on the spot. Price was right in line with another bid I received. On the day of the job the crew showed up on time and got right to it. When I came back to the house after they were done I was pleasantly surprised at how they cleaned up. My yard was cleaner after they left than before! After they left and after I paid them, I noticed one large limb that they forgot to remove. I texted Chris to tell him and he immediately called me and assured me he would take care of it. Within two weeks they took care of that as well. All in all, an excellent job.

They arrived with three trucks and a large crew to get the job done. They were done within a few hours. A small section of our neighbor's fence was damaged from a limb and they repaired it within two days as promised. Very professional and beat all other prices by a considerable amount. We would highly recommend them and plan to use them again.

My first attempt to get this tree removed ended up being a fiasco with another well-rated Angies list provider, so I turned to Charleston Stump Stompers as my second choice. I called for an estimate, and Chris (owner) returned my call when he was standing in front of the palm to be removed. He was clear & articulate on the work he would perform. After thinking about the quote for a day, I accepted his bid and told him to begin work whenever convenient for him. I don't reside at the location of the palm removal, so I also requested photos of the "Site" after he was done. The work was completed within two days after setting the appointment. Pictures show a well-done job. An update, (if needed) will be posted once I visit the property again. Although the price was rather high, I chose this company because of two reasons: I felt comfortable enough with them to be on my property without me being there to supervise, and they are the Tree Company our HOA uses for all their tree work....not to mention Mr Nicholas is a pretty entertaining guy to talk to.

Thank you for your review. Please let us know how we could have achieved A ratings from you on those items that you rated a B. Your written review left us wondering why the "B's" and, of course, we are always looking for areas we can improve upon. The C rating for price is hard to address. We usually get an A and are try to be as fair and competitive as possible. We also make sure there are no "fiascos" so maybe there is some justification there for a little higher price than the other company? We appreciate your business and look forward to you getting into town to look at the work in person.

I had a very tall pine tree get struck by lightning at the end of summer and tried to get quotes during the fall season to have it removed. It was a tricky one as it was tall enough to hit the house or one of the neighbors had it been felled at the stump, resulting in some high quotes (from those that called me back). This was one of the few tree removal companies I had called that demonstrated excellent customer service, calling me back straight away, coming around promptly to quote the service and then pro-actively calling me during the cold weather spell to come and carry out the work without ruining the grass while the ground was hard (the work required a truck in my back yard to get the tree down carefully). They arrived when expected and carried the work out swiftly and cleanly, would definitely use these guys again.

The Stump Stompers team arrived at my farm out in Ravenel as scheduled and pretty much on time despite major fog and traffic on the highway. The crew was very polite, very professional, friendly and informative. They took the time to go over the day's plans with me and make sure they knew exactly where my septic tank and drainfield was, as well as my preferred pathways into various pastures before they got started on their work. I have horses and they were very willing to work around my need to move horses between pastures as they progressed with their work. At the end of the day, I could not be happier with the work they did. My trees look FANTASTIC and they left my property cleaner than it was when they arrived. Also, because I was willing to wait until after the peak season, Stomp Stumpers was also able to offer me the best price for the work I needed done. I highly recommend this company and its competent crew for anyone who needs trim work done at their home, business or farm!

First off, we were a little unsure as to what we wanted done, so when Chris came over to take a look, we walked him through some of our thoughts. He very professionally, gave his opinions and suggestions as to what would work best, and pointed out several things that we would otherwise not been aware of. Chris was very nice and easy to talk with. Once we determined what we wanted to do, he gave us a quote that was EXTREMELY reasonable and less than we anticipated we would need to spend. Due to issues with our HOA, we had to wait a few weeks before we could have the work done, but Chris called and let us know when his team would be out to do the work. They showed up exactly when scheduled. We were not home the day his team did the work, but when we arrived, we were MORE than pleased! The team was in and out in a day, an other than the tasks at hand, there was no trace that any crew or vehicles had ever been there (I mean that in a good way as to the cleanliness of the area). Chris and his team went above and beyond what they were asked to do, even providing more clean-up and debris removal than we had agreed upon. I could not have been more pleased with the results and will 100% definitely use Stump Stompers again in the future if the situation arises.

Went spectacularly well; a fabulous crew, knowledgeable; very competent, very courteous--a fabulous job. Got the whole thing done in an hour. First an Arborist came within a week of my initial call to give an estimate on the work. He promised to do the work by mid-August. Their crew arrived Aug. 13 and within two hours removed the Maples, trimmed the Crepe Myrtles, removed all debris, put the debris through a chipper, used a stump grinder to get rid of the stumps, and raked and removed anything left. The Maples were close to the house and they were removed without damaging anything.

This was the WORST job I have ever seen. The workers were rude, destroyed my flower beds with the ropes they used, and used spikes to climb live trees, chipping the bark and leaving the trees vulnerable to pests and fungus. When I told them to stop and leave the property, they ignored me. I would NEVER use these people again under any circumstances.

We have no record of this person, we believe this to be a fraud and regret that he has been able to post such negative comments. Had we had such a customer, who would give us all F's, we would surely remember and would have addressed it. It simply did not happen. It is curious that it has been over nine months since this work was supposedly done and this person is just now posting this review. Perhaps he has confused us with another tree service? Also in question is that November 11, 2012 was a Sunday and we do not work on Sundays. All we can do in response to this is point to all of our reviews over the years we have been on Angies List and note that it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to have a successful, 24 year old business if we conducted ourselves the way this person has described. We are saddened to have these low marks, that will adversely affect our overall image to Angies List members, posted by someone we do not know.

They were prompt with a response to my initial request for an estimate. I asked for a call before the day of the work and received one which was nice as I have a dog with outside access and I needed to make sure she was safe while the work was being performed. I was very pleased with the trimming they did. They did an excellent job cleaning up after themselves and worked hard to avoid landscaping I had around the trees. The trimming was a bit difficult and I'm sure very labor intensive as the workers needed to climb the trees and tie limbs back before cutting. Overall, I thought they did a great job and I'll be sure to use them again for future work.
Description of Work: Removal of two large (greater than 6 inches in diameter) oak branches and trimming of smaller branches growing over my fence into my neighbors yard.

Working with Chris was a great experience and the job that was performed was professional and as expected. This was not a simple tree removal and literally was blocked on three sides with a deck, the house and the sunroom respectively. None the less they managed to get the tree out with no damage and cleaned up the yard of all debris. I definitely would recommend Charleston Stump Stompers and would use them again for sure.
Description of Work: Removal of a large 23" diameter oak tree which was touching the house and was within 1 foot of the sunroom.

We thought the price was right so we called them to do the job. They returned the following week and everyone was done within an hour and the clean-up was amazing. They pulled everyone out and left my yard looking nicer than when they arrived. Within a couple of days, I received my bill via email & was very happy with their work and their price.
Description of Work: We needed someone to come & look at two massive pecan trees in our yard to see if they were healthy and/or needed to be trimmed. They arrived (on time) and gave us a fair quote to remove limbs and trim them back to create a 8-12 feet clearance around our home.
