We called Jason initially for what we thought was a routine slow-draining tub in a little-used guest bathroom. He tried the usual things but quickly discovered that the problem wasn't a garden variety blockage in the outflow or vent pipe. He put his camera down the tubes and discovered a major blockage in the drain under the house where it dumps into a sewer pipe. His crew had to excavate all the pipe under our crawl space, and when they pulled it up, we discovered that the (dreadful) contractors who had done the "flip" on the house before we bought it apparently hadn't bothered to cover the drains in the bathroom while they worked -- there was construction debris, broken ceramic tiles, pieces of wood, and assorted other garbage along with the nasty stuff that is usually in pipes. We hadn't discovered the problem in the year we'd owned the house because this bathroom was rarely used -- not a nice surprise. They replaced all the drain pipes, and everything has worked perfectly since. Jason knows his stuff, is a straight shooter, and we have total confidence in his competence and honesty. We would definitely use him again!

Sent an email based on Angie's List reference several weeks ago. I received an inital phone call later that day, was told he would get back with me the next day to schedule a date where he could come and give me an estimate for a bathroom remodel. Several days passed without a phone call, I sent another email. He gave my phone number to a fellow contractor due to his busy schedule. His friend came and looked at the project, stated he would get with me in a couple of days for an estimate. Several weeks have passed and I haven't heard a word from either man.

Response from Cottrell & Co., Inc.
Dear Member, I apologize for the miscommunication. My company has always taken pride in all facets of customer relations, however we obviously did not convey our intentions not to get involved in large remodel projects as they are impossible to schedule service calls around. I take full responsibility for not relaying our operating procedures and responding in a quicker fashion. I must confess that I am totally computer illiterate and relied heavily on my wife to monitor our e-mails. Recently she has volunteered herself to a client who we consider personal friends for what was suppose to be a temporary situation. I should have done a better job explaining our business' position, and hopefully my wife's volunteer work will be finished soon, as she is sorely missed. If you have any plumbing repair needs in the future, and would consider giving us another try, I would be glad to make it up to you on the price. Sincerely, Jason Cottrell

After an extremely long list of very poor plumbers, including the original one brought in by our builder, we joined Angie's List. Brian was very professsional & informative about our problems. He completed the first round of work in a very expedient manner. The second problem was tingent on waiting for parts to come in. We have only one tiny negative: when he reattached the Grohe thermostat unit, he did not put it back on to reflect the actual temperature setting. We'll be able to fix that with no problem. As I indicated previously, Cottrell & Co. was approximately the 5th plumber to make repairs in our 6 year old home. They are by far the very best yet & I will contract them again without hesitation.
Description of Work: We have a stand-alone icemaker that could not function because the design of the drain was faulty. He repaired & corrected the drain. We also had a Grohe shower thermostat that was broken by a previous plumber. Brian ordered the parts & returned at a later date to repair the damage.

I've had other people come out and work on my toilet, but it would never last. He came out and replaced everything, and things seem to be working well. His prices were very reasonable, he's friendly and personable. Overall, the quality of his work was much better than previous plumbers I've used.

His name is Jason Cottrell. He is very good at what he does. He is very professional and good at communicating what he is going to do or what his needs are. He is very honest. He will tell me if I need something or don't need something. He told me that I didn't need a large hot water heater and that it wasn't necessary. He is very flexible and I trust him. He does a good job. They are courteous, professional and efficient. I will absolutely continue to use him.

He came out before because I thought I had a water leak and he didn't charge me because he couldn't find the leak so that's why I called him this time. He was professional and did a good work. We called on a Sunday afternoon and told Jason we had to turn the water off because the spiget on the side of the house just broke off at the foundation and water was spraying everywhere. We were okay to wait until Monday and wanted to arrange something for then, especially since we figured it would be cheaper to have him come not on a Sunday. He was at a family birthday party in Chapin and said he'd be leaving in about two hours and could swing by (Lexington) on his way home and fix it. He did exactly that...replaced it properly with new faucet and putty for exactly what he said he'd charge on the phone....all within 2 hours on a Sunday. Very professional and really cared!

Description of Work: I wanted to remove a natural gas line from the deck which fueled a grill. Mr Cottrell suggested keeping the existing gas line but moving the termination point to a secure but safe place under under the deck. Moving in lieu of removal would allow easy re-installation and create a selling point for the house if it was put up for sale.

Emailed the company via Angie's List email provider service. Mr. Cottrell called back the next day with a rough estimate, based on my email. He was punctual, knowledgeable, and professional in his work. The cost figure provided above ($545) was labor only; we purchased the new sink and disposal. I enjoyed working with Mr. Cottrell; he is a true professional.

This plumber advertises that "All our plumbers are master plumbers," even though he is the ONLY plumber in the company. That should have been revealing. Work started fairly smoothly: he said the house I had recently bought needed all the plumbing and sewer replaced underneath. As it was an old house, I agreed. Several times he left the house and did not communicate that the water and electricity were cut off, so other workers could not work. He also did not lock up the house when he left, as instructed. He knocked a large hole in a bedroom wall to get to some bathroom pipes, when he could have gone through the adjacent bathroom which was going to be demolished anyway. Although I did not ask him to pay for repairing the large hole in the wall (I should have.), it was upsetting because the wall knocked down was in good condition. Cottrell the plumber said he wold have "left the job if we had not been nice about it." This arrogance was usual. He said he had strapped the pipes in the crawl space, and only one was strapped. When he first arrived, he said he would include in the job moving 5 ft of gas line, but when the job was near completion, he said he had changed his mind and would not do this. Cottrell did not fasten bathroom faucets to tub studs securely (other contractors on the site can verify that temporary shems were put in, etc.), and got unhappy when asked to properly redo the work. The faucets and pipe were jiggling, different lengths, and not attached close to the shower tile. Although Cottrell was paid completely within 24 hours of when that stage of the work was finished, he was agitated and pushy about payment. He also resisted submitting a complete bill (which he knew to submit in advance). Cottrell said as part of his work, he would return to the house when the redo of the bathrooms was done so that he could reconnect the plumbing. When he was called about doing this recently, he said he was too busy. Also, he was asked to fix a leak in a newly installed by him sewer pipe joint. During the 3rd call, he cited a date and time a week in advance when he would come out to finish the work. When he was called to verify the time he was coming, he said he could not get to the site until late afternoon, if then. Since other contractors at this house were waiting on his work to be finished, he was asked to be sure to come that day. At that point, he got personally abusive, said he would not come back to the house at all, and abruptly hung up.
Description of Work: Replace and bring into living space all plumbing under the house. Also replace existing sewer lines, plus new hot water heater.

I had a leak occur just on my side of the meter. The City of Columbia took 3-4 service requests and over 5 weeks to come out and tell me that the leak was just on my side instead of the City's. A pond formed in my front yard while I waited on them, surrrounded by ants and yellow jackets. Quite a mess. Jason came out quickly, diagnosed the problem immediately, and repaired it the same day. He went the extra mile by cutting out some roots that could be problematic in the future. He even cut down a portion of my tree that broke in the storm the previous night, gratis to me. His reputation on the List is well-warranted, and I will use him on all future plumbing needs.

We called Cottrell & Co in the morning to help us with a clogged toilet that we had tried repeatedly to open. The person who answered was very polite and cheerful. We were told Jason would contact us later that day. In the afternoon he called and came over. In a few minutes he had the problem solved. He did not charge us, saying he was in the neighborhood already. His company does offer an Angies List coupon that would have applied to his services. We were very impressed. We will definitely call them again for the plumbing part of the remodeling we are planning.

I found Cottrell and Co. on Angie's List with very good ratings. I called and set up an appointment for Jason to come diagnose the problem. He and his assistant quickly determined the problem, gave me a rundown of what needed to be done and an approximate estimate. We set up an appointment for Wednesday at 3:00. Jason ran into some delays on a earlier job, but called me well ahead of our appointment to let me know his situation. I appreciated the fact that he informed me of the delay. He arrived about 45 minutes later than the appointment but jumped right on the job to get it done. They were fast, did a very good cleaning up and charged me exactly what was estimated on the original visit. I would used Cottrell and Co. again.
Description of Work: Jason Cottrell and his assistant replaced a section of drain in an upstairs bathroom. The previous homeowner appears to have used caustic material in attempt to clear a drain. The remaining residue left a very bad odor after the shower/bath was used.

Problems solved by shear perserverance! Problems caused by the pump I had provided wasn't working properly, or as advertised. Jason worked at the problem the first day, another visit, and a third visit until he had the think working the way it was advertised to work but didn't. Smart guy.
Description of Work: Replaced 40 gal. gas water heater with an 80 gal. electrical so I could put a timer on it to control costs. Installed the timer too. Needed a small pump installed under a walk-in tub to help drain the tub faster. (The tub holds 80+ gallons, and you can't get out until it has drained and you can open the walk-in door). Some problems were encountered with the pump (I provided), and I got a new pump. Jason returned to reinstall the new pump and plumbing, and wouldn't accept any fee for the return visit. Exceptionally effecient, intellegent, responsive, prompt, fair****, helpful and will not walk away from the job until it is complete and completed correctly and to my satisfaction. Definitely use again and highly recommend!

Overall, the company was pleasant to work with because they explained what they needed to do to find the initial problem. Once the problem was found it was quickly repaired. They then checked all faucet connections and toilets because I explained that my water bill had been outrageously high for the last three months. They also checked for leaks around the outside faucets. I was very pleased with the service I received and will use Cottrell & Co Inc. in the future for any of my plumbing needs.

My plumbing was backed up, water was coming into the downstairs tub and the downstairs toilet was overflowing. I called Cottrell & Company after reviewing reports posted on Angie's List. I called about 9:00 AM on Friday, May 21. After reviewing the schedule, set up an appointment for 11:00 PM on Saturday, May 22. About 4:21 on May 21 had a VM message that they were in the neighborhood and were going to swing by to analyze the problem and they asked that I return their call. I called about 5:00. I was told that they had put a camera down the "pipe" and after review of the problem, that the area that was clogged was the resposibility of the city. They had gone ahead and called the city to report the problem. They assured me the city would be by to work on the problem within a couple of hours. Sure enough, the city came by, I told them what the plumber had said and within 1/2 hour they were gone and my problem was fixed. I am extremely pleased with Cottrell and Company. Because I was a member of Angie's list did not charge me for the analysis or service call. This was my first company off of Angie's list and if the rest of the companies listed provide the same level of service, Angie's list will be my best invetment I have made in a long, long time. Thanks again to Cottrell and Company, I appreciate the prompt service and professional service received.

I am complaining about the amount I was charged for their services and the fact that they don't stand behind the service they perform. Cottrell & Co. came out to my home on 1/9/10 because I was having water leaks under my sink and under the house. After they fixed it I called again, because I still had a leak under my sink and when they came out they told me that was not included in the work they had done and wanted more money to fix it. Another $175.00. A new drain line was installed through the kitchen cabinet and floor instead of being installed in the wall for noise reduction. The sink drain was vented under the sink, which is acceptable. However, there was no provision for the venting of the bathtub and washer drain as required by code. Furthermore, the old cast iron vent line, which may or may not be strapped behind plaster walls, was left open with no cover, making it susceptible to rain water from exposure. All cast iron removed and replaced by PVC was left in the crawl space. The waste line which was removed was left under the house and is still full of waste, which raises health issues. In short, the drain line did need replacing, but was not done properly or to code. The company did not address the mold problem I have under the house nor did they bring it to my attention. When they originally came out to give me an estimate they said it would take 3 hours and it only took 1-1/2 hours and I still got charged for 3 hours. Company replaced bathroom faucet and gave me a quote of $50. They only replaced the faucet. Did not replace the drain opening. The final price for that was $120.00 instead of $50.00. They charged me $70.00 for labor and it only took 10 minutes to install.
Description of Work: I had a water leak under the sink in my kitchen and under the house below the kitchen. I also had a faucet in the bathroom which needed to be replaced.

Response from Cottrell & Co., Inc.
To whom it may concern, We were called by this member after she was referred by a friend to investigate a leak under her kitchen sink. We came out the same day to accommodate her as she was very distressed about her current plumbing situation. Upon arrival, the existing condition of the plumbing system was very poor due to pipes being 60 years old and not being properly maintained. A service plumber had previously done work on the system and work was done improperly and not to code. She confessed that an ex boyfriend who was a painter also knew a little about plumbing and had attempted to do some work recently but repairs were not successful and had caused some damage to the cabinets, joist, and allowed an abundance of sewer water to accumulate in the crawlspace. She stated that she was a single mom and could not afford to fix all that needed repair so I made arrangements with her to come back on a Saturday and make whatever repairs she could afford at a reduced price. The price of the faucet install increased from $50 to $120 because she wanted us to provide the faucet as well. Our investigation and service charges were waived and prices were discussed with her up front and approved before work began. As you can see from other ratings given by previous customers, my number one goal in business is to have a positive influence in my community. I enjoy helping people, especially those who think they cant afford a good plumber. Unfortunately, there are a few people in this world who expect something for nothing as if they are owed special treatment and are willing to lie, cheat or steal to get what they want. I did exactly what she asked me to do and in turn have been blamed for everything that had ever been wrong with the home.

I am an out of town landlord and needed to find a plumber, since my property managers' plumber never seemed to really correct an issue. I found Jason on Angies list. He cut an access panel in the wall so his wall camera could find the leak. The issue as it turned out was not a plumbing issue but a tile issue. Jason referred us to a tile guy who came out and resolved the leaking. Since then I have used their services again. Jason is skilled and explains the situation in simple terms. I wish every company I used was as professional, knowledgeable, trustworthy and helpful as Jason.
