This dinning room set was beautiful and has always been very well cared for, but it needed refinishing. The father and son both knew how precious and sentimental this furniture was to me. They told me they had been in business a long time, knew what they were doing and that I could trust them and that I would be happy with their work. Because of Angie's list, the reviews and what they told me, I felt comfortable and had no doubts of their ability to do a beautiful, professional job. The suit was a lighter color and they told us it had to be dark and they gave us a choice of 3 colors. When asked what product they used for stain, they both told us the brand was Old Masters. They came with a color chart of another brand and we didn't care for any of the 3 color choices we were given. We went to a store that sold Old Masters and when I called the son to tell him the color we wanted, he had no idea of that color or even where to buy the product. They said that because of the so called sand blasting, and I don't know if it was ever sand blasted or not, it had to be sanded. I told them twice that I had no problem with the appearance or patina of the wood finish. I never told either one of them that I wanted a shine and in fact told them that I didn't want it shiny. I understand that wood has to be sanded, but I could not have imagined the amount of sanding they would do to cause such damage to the beautiful walnut veneers and patina this set had. They have sanded through the veneers and caused the table and side board tops to have a ripple or wavy appearance. The tops are not flat or level as any top should be and the beauty of the wood and veneers are no longer there. They have altered this furniture, removed the patina and damaged it. The father also told my husband that he stabilized the chairs by putting 12 screws in each chair. The proper and correct way to do this is to take the chairs apart and re-glue them, not drive 12 screws into 80 year old furniture. On a Monday the father called and said they were returning the furniture. When they got here they told us that they could not meet my expectations and the son said he could not get the color we wanted. I told him the color was secondary to the damage they had done and my only expectation was for them to do a professional job and the job they told me they could and would do. I trusted them to do what they said they knew how to do. The father admitted that the veneers on the table and side board now needed to be replaced and that was expensive to do. He said they did that type of work, but he was cutting his loses. He knew how much they had altered and damaged this furniture and they no longer wanted any part of it. He left me devastated and heart sick. Rebuttal to company response: This is in response to the Palmer's Furniture Repair and Refinishing Company comments at the end of my complaint and to their refusal to resolve my complaint. I have had several companies look at this furniture and not one of them could believe that a professional, or anyone who knew what they were doing, could have done this work, caused so much damage and then delivered it back in such condition and with such poor workmanship. No company that came to see the furniture could figure out what type of product was put on it and that it was certainly not a product that a true professional would use. It looks awful and ugly. The furniture was sanded to the point of destroying the wood grain and wood veneers and was not sanded by hand, as it should have been. This furniture did not need to be sanded as the Palmers have done. They didn't know what they were doing and once they started sanding they did not quit until they had ruined 9 pieces of a beautiful, 80 year old depression era dinning room. As to Mr Palmer's claim that he repaired all the chairs, the chairs were also in excellent condition. There were a few of them that needed to be stabilized. The correct way to do this is to take the chairs apart and re-glue them, not drive 12 screws into each chair and then fill the holes with whatever they used. This is 80 year old furniture, not junk. Again, they didn't know what they were doing, nor did they care. Mr Palmer claims he rebuilt the table. The table has not been rebuilt and what was done to it is a mess. It can't even be touched without moving. Screws were also driven into this wood to "rebuild" it. This table in their sanding, "rebuilding" and refinishing, is now a mess in look and function. His assertion that there is little left to do to this furniture is wrong. There is now so much repair work and work to undue what they have done. This furniture now needs replacement of wood and veneers and rebuilding it. Once this is all done, it will never be what it was and not the way it had always been. They so altered and destroyed this furniture. In his refusal letter to Angie's List he also assets that I am trying to extort money from him to pay for repairs that the so called "sandblasting" caused. This is ludicrous. This furniture was in beautiful condition and had been that way for 80 years. It just needed to be refinished with a professional product by a professional who knew and appreciated the uniqueness of this beautiful antique furniture. Mr. Palmer claims that "We delivered back better furniture than we picked up. There was nothing we could do to satisfy this member." Mr Palmer knows that this is a false statement and that the furniture he brought back is in disgraceful condition. No one would have been satisfied with this type of work and the condition that it was returned in. I find it hard to believe that Mr Palmer refuses to make right what he made so wrong. I expect restitution.
Description of Work: Their service was used to refinish an antique depression era dinning room set that belonged to my grandmother.

Response from PALMER'S REFINISHING
This furniture had been previously sandblasted which severely damaged the veneer and left a wavy pattern in the tops of the table and sideboard. Millions of tiny pits were in the surface of all the pieces and they had to be sanded out in order to obtain the shine she was requesting on the furniture. At the time we picked up the furniture the surface had a matte finish (dull look) which hid most of the defects this customer stated that we created. After much discussion and review it was our opinion that we were not going to be able to meet this customers expectations with any degree of satisfaction. We had already repaired all the chairs, totally rebuilt the table base, sanded all the furniture and put the background color on it . The other steps remaining were to tone everything, touchup the veneer sandthrough area on the sideboard, and spray lacquer on the surfaces. After nuerous inputs from her about her ever increasing expectations we decided to cut our losses ( $200 supplies-- 48 man hours of labor) and return the furniture.

Showed up on a Monday as promised, gave me a price and took the chairs to his location. He called on Thursday and set an appointment to deliver the chairs on Friday. He showed up on Friday at the appt. time and showed me what he did. The chairs are now rock steady and I would definitely use them again if the need arises.

Wow. This company provided some of the best customer service I've seen. Their work is beautiful, and they are very professional. I have used them on two separate occasions to refinish furniture to include a dining room table, sideboard and repair another table. The latest appointment referred to here was for two end tables that belonged to my husband's grandfather and the repair of another table. They turned out beautifully. In addition to that, they came and picked up the pieces and delivered them - all in a very short time period. I will continue to use them when I need refinshing or repair work on my wood furniture.

Palmers picked up my furniture and performed repairs and refinishing in less than a week. They responded promptly, and gave me a quote over the phone. They arrived on time. They carefully loaded and unloaded my furniture in their truck. They were pleasant and their price was very reasonable. I would recommend them. After I saw what a nice job they did, I asked them to do my rocking chair.

My husband purchased an antique pie crust tilt table at a garage sale. It was in bad shape - the 3 legs were not level and the tilt function had been disabled. There were numerous screws, nails and wood glue from previous repair attempts. We brought the table to Scott Palmer who found the table to be an actual tilt table. They repaired the table and refinished and then delivered to our home. The table is beautiful. We sent 2 more small tables back with them for repairs and refinishing.

My son purchased a dining room table, 6 matching chairs, a coffee table and a foyer table from an unfinished furniture retailer. He was hoping that I could stain and finish the furniture for him...it was far too big a job for me! I found Palmer's Refinishing on Angie's List and gave him a call. He was great on the phone and agreed to go pick up the furniture from my son's house in another city. We agreed on a price and they agreed on a finish. He picked up the furniture, put the chairs together, stained and finished it and then delivered back to my son. My son and his future wife were thrilled and I was happy with the wedding gift I was able to give them. They were wonderful to work with and the work was excellent. I do intend to use them again!

I called Al Palmer and he quoted me over the phone the price, then he and his son drove an hour and a half to pick up my bed. True I had to pay a little more for the extra travel time but was well worth it. He & his son reviewed the color, & finish with me and how long it would take. They were prompt, showed up on time, and called in advance to tell me when they would arrive. He returned the finished bed exactly in the timeframe they stated. This bed belong to my parents and is over 70 years old, some of the finish was peeling off in several places along with some of the detail work missing. Al completely re-stained, refinished, and repaired everything to its glory. The bed turned out excellent. I?m extremely pleased with the workmanship, professionalism, and promptness. I would highly recommend them to anyone and I will assure you that I will use them again should I need any refinishing in the future. My wife and I are very happy with the bed being restored and we look forward showing it off to family and friends. I just can not say enough about the Palmers and their workmanship. Now what else can I find that?s needs refinished?

When I called the Palmers they gave me a fee over the phone. That was the total they charged...no extras. Pick-up and delivery is included. They made suggestions and followed through on ever aspect. Great people to work with.
Description of Work: This family owned and operated business did an excellent job refinishing a table for me. They drove up from SC to pick up the table and delivered it when finished. Their price was excellent. The work they did is beautiful. When the stain color we had selected did not work on the wood, they called me and we discussed a solution. When completed, the table looked terrific. I would definitely recommend them.

From the start, they were fantastic. Came to our home and walked us through the process, chose stain and finish and gave us a reasonable estimate for the furniture. They were in the middle of two large projects but we were moving out of state within a few weeks so they managed to get all those pieces done over a week early. They were very accommodating to a drop off date as we were travelling even waiting in our driveway when our flight caused a delay! Highly recommend this great family-run business!

I called Al Palmer and he quoted me over the phone the price, came out and picked up the dining room table, inserts, and base, and took it back to his shop. He reviewed the color, finish, and how long it would take with my wife and me, showing samples of color and finish. They were prompt, showed up on time, and even called in advance to tell us they were coming. He returned the finished dining room table exactly in the timeframe they stated and again called in advance as to what time they would deliver. My dining room suit is no longer being made and the finish was peeling off with some bad places on both the table and inserts. Al completely restained, refinished, and reassembled everthing exactly the it was when it took it out. The job was "excellent" with the diningroom suit looking like it came from the factory. I was extremely well pleased with the workmanship, professsionalism, and promptness in everthing. I would highly recommend them to anyone and I will assure you that I will used them again should I need any refininshing in the future. Since we have always loved our dining room set, we now have everything restored to its original condition ready to be handed down to our Grandchildren. It looks like new. They were very interested in making sure we were pleased with everthing and assured us they would stand behind their work should we become dissatisfied with anything in the future.

I called and got an approximate quote over the phone. They came out, confirmed the quote, took my pieces, refinished them, and brought them back about two weeks later, just as promised.
Description of Work: Palmer's refinished two dressers and a changing table. They did a fantastic job: they were prompt, communicated well, and the pieces of furniture looked amazing when they were finished with them. Al and a helper stopped by our house on Monday to look at the pieces and give us a quote which we immediately accepted. Al gave us a detailed explanation of how the furniture would be prepared for painting, how they would do the rub-through red highlights, and how many coats of laquer would be applied over the paint. I particularly like the fact that Al is a chemical engineer and has extensive knowledge and experience with the finishes he uses. They loaded the furniture that day and on Friday they delivered the finished pieces. Needless to say, we are extremely pleased and will use Al to refinish a hutch and a dry sink as soon as we unload them.
Description of Work: Al refinished our 54" single pedestal table w/ two 12" leaves and a 16 1/2 X 52 X 38" sideboard. The pieces were solid oak with a golden stain. Al also antiqued all of the sideboards hardware to better match the new finish which was a flat black with rub-through highlights of red. The furniture turned out absolutely beautiful, the cost was excellent for the high quality work, and Al Palmer is a delight to work with.

Al came out and looked at the wardrobe and gave us a quote of $500 to refinish it in an antique look plus $100 to add a shelf for a TV. He gave us several colors to choose from. The new entertainment center was delivered about a week later, and although it looked like a new piece of furniture, we were very disappointed in the look we were trying to create. Al offered to redo it for $300 then $100 to keep us happy, but we said we would think about it. We wanted more of a distressed antique look and the piece clearly did not look that way - and the green color was way to pastel-looking. We should have produced pictures and examples of what we were looking for before he started. I decided to just handle it myself. Well, a month goes by and I decided to call Al back for a few "distressing tips" and express my disappointment. Al is not the type to let a customer go away unhappy, so he said he would either refund the money or pick it up and redo it for free. I didn't want my money back after all the work he did so I let him pick up the piece and redo it. It turned out great, the wife was happy and I paid him $300. Even though he refused payment we made him take it. I was going to pay all along, but there is a difference in voluntarily paying and having to pay! Bottom line - Al will go to extreme lengths to make you happy with the end result.

Mr. Palmer and his son came to my house to pick up the table. We went through the finish choices and they explained in detail what they needed to do and the timing involved. They did a great job with the table and had it back when promised. When they delivered the table they noticed one of my chairs had a loose arm because a screw hole was stripped. They took it upon themselves to drill another hole and secure the arm. A great added bonus.

We have a large mahagony dining table and three leaves that needed major repair and refinishing. The men at Palmer's Refinishing called us back promptly and scheduled an appointment right away. They arrived on time and were very knowledgeable about our options. We were very pleased with the quote and their willingness to help us out. This father and son were so very nice ...and professional. They took the furniiture on the spot and had it back to us in four days! The best part of all is our table and leaves look WONDERFUL! My husband commented they looked better than when they were purchased twenty-five years ago. Everything was repaired as promised and we couldn't be more pleased! They provide the skill and pride in their work that is hard to find these days. We will definitely use their services again and pass on their names to our friends. Thanks so much....

I had a wonderful experience with this company!!! Mr. Palmer was always very responsive when I called. The turnaround was much shorter than I expected as well. I had six dining room chairs refinished in a slightly distressed look. I did not like the first result due to the color that I chose. I called Mr. Palmer the next day and he came and picked up the chairs again and returned them in just a couple of days. They were perfect!!! I appreciated Mr. Palmer's patience with me as I determined the look that I liked. He and his son just wanted me to be happy. It is obvious that they take great pride in their work.

Palmer's Refinishing recently painted all of our kitchen cabinets. We found them via the internet as we were not Angie's List members at the time. Mr. Palmer and his son personally came and looked at our cabinets and gave us their professional opinion on the best way to upgrade them. The cabinets were pickled oak and had been in place for over 20 years. My initial thought was to have them sanded down and restained to a more modern possibly darker color but the Palmers suggested painting them instead. I had seen a picture of painted cabinets in a magazine that seemed appealing and they were able to match that color. They gave us the estimate and took two doors with them so they could return for a second visit to show me a finished door with a painted/glazed look and the other door painted but without the glazing. After I made my choice we set a date for them to come in and do the work. We had an unexpcted death in the family before the first start date so I had to cancel their visit. They were extremely understanding and they worked with us to re-schedule for a week or so later eventhough I gave them very short notice. They completed the project on time and within their original quote. They were truly intent on making sure that we, as customers, were satisfied with their work. I would highly recommend these folks to anyone seeking the services that they provide. They also urged me to join Angie's List because I'm going to need some granite countertop work and flooring work to complete our kitchen renovation!

They came twice to source the work, and we changed our mind and went with them. They took some sample back and redid it, and brought it back and asked us if we liked that, and we loved it, so they told us when they’ll be here and they were here on time everyday and they did exactly they said they do. They cleaned up great and they did a great job. They were purely very honest people. They were not the lowest on their price, but they were by far not the highest, and I think we had four bids all together and the lowest we got was $3700 and they were $4000, so it was a good price and good quality work. I would use them again in the future.

The team from Palmer's did an outstanding job repainting my cabinets. I still cannot believe that these are my same cabinets, as the quality and workmanship from Palmer's was incredible - our cabinets look brand new! The team from Palmer's took care in ensuring that any mess was contained, were meticulous in their work, and didn't consider the job finished until I was completely satisfied. I would not hesitate to recommend Palmer's to anyone considering repainting their cabinets!
Description of Work: As part of my kitchen remodeling project I wanted to have my cabinets repainted, as I did not want to spend money on replacing them. In addition to the cabinets in the kitchen, they also repainted some built in cabinets and a TV niche.

They were prompt. They did a very good job. They were polite and professional. They did very good work. They were just a great company. They picked up after themselves and locked up when they left. I will use them again in the future, if needed.
Description of Work: They did refinishing work on tables for us.
