It went pretty fast. They tore fence down in the rain and set the fence post in bad weather. Fence looks really nice. So the job went very smoothly.
Description of Work: Had my fence replaced on one side of yard as it was falling apart and would eventually fall down.

The overall experience didn't go as well as I would expect from an Angie's List Top Service Provider. The fence looks good, but there were some problems along the way that took too long to resolve. Anthony was very quick to come out and give me a quote on the fence. Approximately a month after the quote, I called him to schedule the fence install. Anthony came to the house on a Thursday to get the deposit check and have me review and sign the contract. At that time I was led to believe the fence would take about three days to complete. One day to dig and set the posts, the next two to set the cross boards and complete the fence. The job took six days with Anthony taking days off in between without letting me know. I had to call him a couple of times to find out when he was returning. When the fence was completed, I gave Anthony the final check and signed off that I was satisfied with the job. Several days later I noticed that one of the 4x4 posts was set at a 45 degree angle to the fence, with the cross boards only touching on the corner of the post. I called Anthony to inform him of the problem and asked him to take care of it. Over a week passed and I had not heard anything, so I called again. Anthony told me he had come out, but did not see the incorrectly set post. After I told him which one it was he asked me what I wanted done. I said I wanted it replaced. He said he was concerned removing and replacing the post would ruin the integrity of the fence. His solution to the problem was to set new a post next to the original. I reluctantly agreed. Over a week passed and I still hadn't heard from Anthony. I did a more thorough inspection of the fence and found two more posts that were set at an angle. At that time I decided to file a complaint with Angie's List detailing the problems I was having. Once the complaint was filed Anthony called and left me a message to let me know he would be over that evening to set new posts. I told him I talked to a different contactor about the problem and was told when done correctly, the integrity of the fence would not be compromised. I also told him that his solution to the problem would be rather unattractive with two posts set next to each other in three spots. Anthony agreed to fix the problem correctly, and came over within a few days to complete it.

We engaged Ladson Fencing to install our new fence and gates after soliciting multiple quotes. Mr. Mauldin's price was very competitive and after meeting with him, it was obvious he is very knowledgeable regarding fence installation. Inclement weather impacted the installation, but the final result is a very attractive and nicely installed fence which has garnered many compliments and positive remarks. The only less than positive issue was that the worksite was not cleaned up at the end of each workday. Tools, jackets and trash (drink cups, concrete bags, etc) were left strewn around the yard. My husband and I would gather and place the tools and garments in a pile, and discard the trash daily.

Anthony and his wife came out within a day or two of my call. They were very nice and we had a very good meeting. I was impressed with what Anthony told me he would do and his concern for keeping the yard secure because of the pool. We also felt he was a good choice because of all his positive reviews on Angie's list. I explained that we would be gone while he was working as this is a second home, but there would be other people there working on the home. I provided him with a garage door opener to gain access to the electrical outlets in the garage. Anthony called a few times over the next few weeks to express some frustration that some parts for the fence had either not come in or , were the wrong parts. I don't recall exactly what the problem was. But he assured me that all was well. He was not quite finished ( gate not installed) when he requested his last draw. A family member who was in town went ahead and released the check to him. I returned to town a few weeks later having been told the job was complete. The first thing I noticed was the new gate was hung at an angle and not very secure. Instead of attaching it to the column that the old gate was attached to he had put new posts in the ground that were uneven and crooked and hung the gate that way. There was a broken landscape light pulled out about a foot and lying on the sidewalk and tools and trash strewn around the yard. Anthony told me that they had leftover dirt from digging the new post holes and I had given him permission to leave the extra dirt in a pile on the driveway. There was a small pile of dirt in the drive, but most of the post holes were not filled in. I'm not sure they were cemented. One hole was so deep that our dogs could have crawled right out under the fence. Then there was dirt scattered around some of our trees. Actually we ended up bringing in even more dirt to finish filling in the holes. Many areas of the fence are not level, and are wobbly, and in one area near the pool equipment he had the fence too high off the ground and they took the lattice, that had been above the old fence and was supposed to go back up, and cut it and put it under the new fence to fill the gap. The bottom of the fence was supposed to be on the ground but the whole section goes up at an angle. The posts in that area were not even the same height. Inside our garage, the palettes the fencing was delivered on were scattered all over. I couldn't pull my car in. The little white pieces from the vinyl being cut were covering the garage floor. There was trash and strapping from the palettes and no attempt had been made to clean it up. We are still finding the cement from the old post holes under bushes in the back yard. Because of things being broken without us being told or any attempt to repair them, the mess left behind, and the obviously poor job ( crooked gate, etc.) we felt that even though we had treated them with trust and respect, they had not treated us, or our home, with the same respect and chose not to ask them to come back and fix anything.
Description of Work: Original wood fencing and large gate in to back yard removed and replaced with vinyl fence and gate. Fence encloses entire backyard and attaches to back of house. Gate runs between column and house. Required digging new holes for posts as the new fence posts were not in the same spots. Anthony was paid 2000 and we paid for the materials directly.

I havent had a problem with a gate in the last 10 years!I stand behind my work and reputation of the past reports! The customer was informed of everything that was going on with the project during the process because she lived out of town. She understood all the details around her pumphouse and the lattice being used. We discussed the dirtpiles and she told me where to put the dirt! She said she was going to have her landscapers take care of it! Lastly we cleaned up after ourselves everyday after we were through working. We were also not the only ones with acess to property that was working there!

The good: They did a good job over some uneven terrain and were able to addres a slight slope near the driveway that would have impacted the wide gates. They were very hard working, arrived on time and overall did a good job. The Bad: Requires background description: Ladson Fences only provides installation and the material had to be ordered from another company that Ladson selected based on what was described as an existing business relationship. A small part of the yard already had fence installed, and Ladson's job was to extend the existing fence using the exact same style. Ladson contacted the fence material company and got a quote from them on the fence cost. He then combined his installation quote with the material quote and told me what the full cost would be. I called in my credit card to the company and paid for the material which was scheduled for delivery a few days later. Before the product was delivered, Anthony visited with his contract and did some minor work confirming the fence path. I signed the contract and gave him a deposit just a few minutes before the arrival of the material. When the material was delivered it became apparent that it was the wrong fence. Having signed the contract and given him a deposit, I felt obligated to continue the deal. The price for the correct material caused Ladson's price to increase significantly. 1. Quoting on the wrong material resulted in a higher overall cost than the other bid I received. It was impossible to compare bids because Ladson's quote was based on the wrong material. 2. There were 8 section of fence left over along with concrete and fence parts. The fence installation solves one problem with our dogs but the excess material is another problem with garage storage. 3. The supplier refused to accept a return or given any credit on the excess. Anthony reported that the employee that he had the special relationship with had left the company so he had no leverage. While I'm overall pleased with the installation services, I'm left with 8 fence sections (about 50') of unused fence sitting in my garage wtih other spare fence parts and 10 bags of concrete.
Description of Work: Installed fence to contain dogs in back yard. They had to navigate through brush and overgrowth to install the fence and since the task was to enclose our dogs, the fence had to be installed to minimize the gap between the bottom rail and some uneven terrain.

This review starts out first by saying that Member is SATISFIED with his fence! When we install specialty fence we pass on the discounted price that we get to the customer. Helping to keep the cost down and in turn saving the customer about 10% on materail. When this job was measured it was hard to get an exact measurement. I told Member that we may fall short on materail and if we did we could order more. He did not want any hold up so he ask me to order a few more panels with yhe understanding that they could not be returned. I called the order in and told him to contact the supplier that my part was done as far as materail was concern. Yes the wrong materail was sent but that was the suppliers fault. The cost was more because the fence that was needed was more in detail than the fence that was ordered. Although the wrong materail was ordered and sent by the supplier, they were not going to give away $3000.00 worth of materail. Ladson Fences is not responsible for other peoples mistakes. This is also a point that Member come to agree on! Also note that the labor cost did not go up! In regaurds to the extra materail; I told Member that I would try to find someone that wanted to buy the extra he had. He informed me that if I didn't find a buyer that he would write a bad review and give me low review grades! At the end of the day it all comes down to customer satifaction! This customer is satisfied with his fence by his own admission! Ladson Fences has won the Customer Satisfaction Award for 3 years(2010,2011,2012)in a row! We will keep satisfying customers or we will shut the doors! Again we are not responsible for other companies action and feel we were graded by that in this review! Atnhony L. Mauldin Sr. C.E.O

Anthony was prompt and professional. The completed project did not look great to me (boards were not even at the bottom of the fence or the gates), so I asked him to make at least the bottom of one of the gates level. My thought was that the grass would cover the imperfections on the bottom of the fence, but not on the gate. He levelled it by taking all the boards up to the highest level, which made the gap too big. I suggested that he put a board at the bottom to close in the gap, which he did. I also needed to remind him about replacing the miscellanous boards around the fence, which he and his assistant took care of promptly. I believe this was just an oversight. The end result was satisfactory. Anthony is anxious to please the customer, and was very responsive to my requests on completion of the project.

This customer was a joy to work for! Just a few minor details to consider. The estimate was given in April. We only hold estimates for 30 days. In this case we extended our estimate time and did the work in September(5 months later). When gates are built there has to be room at the bottom for the gate to open over grass. Also when you have a gate on a slight incline it gives the boards a slight stagger look. As the customer stated I modified the gate to her satifaction and yet another satisfied customer.

I was looking to get a fence installed so I searched on Angie's List. Ladson Fence had the top rated overall score and positive reviews so I decided to give him a try. I called in to get an estimate he was very proficient with answering every time I called. I got the estimate done the same day and he gave me all the information I needed to complete the process. After being approved by my HOA he was back out immediately to lay down the foundation. and within three days my fence was complete. I was able to breakdown the balance in three increments and trust wasn't an issue. After he finished my fence I asked him about the wet seal and he came back out to do it for a very small fee. I later called him for additional services and he came the same day with a smile ready to work. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND LADSON FENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF I HAD TO DO IT OVER I WOULD AND I WISH HE PERFORMED EVERY SERVICE THERE IS TO PERFORM BECAUSE I WOULD CALL ON HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Description of Work: Anthony and his employees installed a wood privacy fence for me. He also applied wet seal so that the fence could keep its color.

I thought that for the work that they did, the price Ladson Fences charged was reasonable. They were prompt. I am still not really really happy about the solution they came up with for one gate. The other gate they tried to fix it so that my little dog could not squeeze through and it is very hard to get the latch to close but basically I think that anybody that did the fence would run into that problem.

I called Ladson Fences due to a recommendation from a friend and then went on this site and saw his grading. Anthony met with me on 4 separate occasions w/o a contract because I had issues with the utility lines, other fences, trees and changes I wanted from our original agreed upon plans. He was very accommodating, patient and listened to my concerns/wants. We signed a contract on a Wednesday evening, told me the job would start the following Wednesday, called me on Sunday to inform me that they would start two days earlier than planned and were done 4 days ahead of stated scheduled. The fence is gorgeous and I love it. He was great to work with, his crew was very nice and I would not only recommend them, but would hire them for any future needs.

Anthony was very committed to performing the job, and the final product is something we are proud of. We have received many, many compliments. There was not much negotiating on the price, and we did not have the opportunity to price compare, as we were in an urgent need, having just moved into the new home and had several pups ready to run around. Overall a positive experience and would recommend.

We originally got quotes from three companies, Ladson Fences, which we chose from the glowing reviews on Angie's List, and two other companies that had been recommended to us by others. All the quotes were about the same, but Anthony stood out because he came into our house with a laptop to show us various pictures of his past work, both as verification of the quality work he does and so that we could explain what we wanted/make sure we were all on the same page. At the time we were a little unprepared to spend that much money, so we shelved the fence idea, but Anthony followed up with us about two weeks after his initial visit to see if there was any more information we needed. He was the only one out of the three guys we contacted who actually followed up with us! We discussed options for reducing costs, and he came back out to look at how our plan would change and to provide a new estimate. As for the other two guys, one guy said our new plan would cost more, and the other guy just didn't show up and never called to apologize or reschedule. Already Anthony was head and shoulders above the competition, so we chose to move forward with him. We had to get HOA approval for the fence, which we applied for in a timely manner, but the HOA was dragging their feet. Anthony took the initiative to call us to get a status, after which he called our HOA management company to find out what the hold-up was. We were very impressed with his help in getting the job started. When the day came to begin work, Anthony's assistant had a family emergency and couldn't come to our house, but Anthony was there bright and early. He could only do so much by himself but wanted to at least show up and get done what he could because he didn't want to go back on his promise to start work that day. We, of course, understood, but we appreciated his desire not to break a promise. The work took about a week, and Anthony was always there relatively early, though never ridiculously so. He always stayed well past 5PM to get as much done as possible each day. I even noticed after he built one of the gates that it was done in a style that we did not prefer. It was a really minor detail that was not discussed; it was not unattractive, just not what we wanted. Anthony was happy to re-build the gate to our specifications and, of course, complete the other two in the same manner. All in all, Anthony is fantastic with communication, promptness, dedication, being proactive, and even better with his work. He builds high quality fences and is proud of the excellent job he does (rightly so). Some people here complain that he is a little pricey, but (1) he was no more expensive than anyone else (and, in the case of our re-vamped fence plan, he was less expensive), and (2) you often get what you pay for. I would not hesitate in the least to recommend Anthony to anyone else. His utmost concern was our satisfaction. He takes care of all of his customers, but especially Angie's List customers. He works hard for all these great reviews and deserves every one of them!
Description of Work: Anthony built our 4-foot wood fence from start to finish (no previous fence had to be removed/repaired) with three gates. The perimeter of the fence was about 350 feet.

Anthony came to measure the yard and provide an estimate on 06/07, a Thursday. He quoted us to surround the yard with a 6' privacy fence. He asked me to call 811 to have our utilities marked and let him know if we'd like to proceed. I called 811 Friday, and they said the utilities would be marked by the following Wednesday at midnight and work could proceed after that time. Anthony called me back on Monday and I elected to proceed - he stopped by later that day to sign the contracts, which stated the types of material he would use, the footage and type of fence, as well as the expected payment schedule. I provided 1/3 down as described in the contract for the work to start. Anthony and his team arrived promptly Thursday morning after all of the utilities were marked and posted the entire yard. My husband and I were both home and were very impressed with the speed and efficiency of the crew - it was HOT outside and they took minimal breaks. They also had to clear some dense brush along the back border of the property - Anthony did not charge for this service. I provided a second 1/3 payment after posting was completed. The next day, they started erecting the cross-beams. Due to my checks being non-local, Anthony warned that they might not be able to return until Tuesday when the check clears. I was disappointed, but understood and did not expect them to work without payment. Anthony and his team returned Tuesday after the check cleared and placed 98% of the vertical boards. Again, I was very impressed with the speed and precision of their work (as were my neighbors - they spoke to us later that evening on how shocked they were at how fast the fence was going up). Wednesday, Anthony and his crew had returned to complete the work, but our outdoor GFIs were not working, so Anthony called and let me know that they would return the following morning with their generator to finish the vertical boards and installation of the gates. The final day, they finished before noon. The fence looks fabulous. Anthony politely knocked and walked me around the yard to explain what they had done and how the gates functioned. They lined the top with border boards so the dogear is masked and used black hardware on the gates that match our house - these are details that I love. They cleaned up very well without any scraps of wood left in the yard, and now I feel safe letting our three dogs out in the backyard without having to chase them out of the street and neighbors' yards. Anthony recommended a type and quantity of wood finish that will allow our fence to weather well for the next 5 years. Overall, I was very impressed with Ladson Fences - I would definitely use them again.

We do not recommend Ladson Fences. After completion of the effort, we found nails and concrete chunks on the lawn. There is one board mounted with only one supporting nail. The practice is to install 2 nails per rail with a total of 6 per board. We also counted approximately 35 boards with less than 6 nails and several with improperly installed nails. The double gate looks as if it sagged, but the problem is that the boards were all installed at an angle and not perpendicular. And, one post that was identified on two occasions as loose. It is still loose. There were problems and ?red flag? indicators throughout the process, and for those reasons we did not have Ladson Fences correct the problems addressed above. We went with Ladson Fences based upon the ratings on Angie?s List. Our difficult experience follows in two parts: a summary and a supporting detailed explanation of the summary points. SUMMARY: 1. The contract required a 50% payment before the work started. 2. At the time we signed the contract, Mr. Mauldin requested that checks be written in his name and not to Ladson Fences. Mr. Mauldin also stated that he preferred cash but would accept checks written against local banks. Prior to signing the contract, we had written the two checks (down payment and final) to Ladson Fences. At his request, we wrote two new checks in his name. He accepted that they were not written against a local bank. 3. When asked why he did not have a business stencil or decal on his truck, he stated that he worked in areas that required licensing and that he did not want to advertise his business in those areas. 4. He demonstrated no ability or concern for scheduling, nor did he contact us when he missed scheduled work dates or for rescheduling dates. 5. The quality of his workmanship was adequate. 6. He accepted the checks written in his name (not from local Banks). Both checks were written against the same account and were consecutively numbered. He used a check cashing service to cash the first check, and encountered no difficulty. For some unexplainable reason, he encountered difficulty with his check cashing service as they refused to cash the second check. 7. We suggested that he deposit the second check in his business account or that he use a different check cashing service. His responses were combative, aggressive, and threatening. DETAIL: 1. We felt the 50% down payment was inordinately high. We expected a 20 ? 30% down payment. Again, we signed the contract solely because of Angie?s List high rating. 2. Because of the comments addressed in Summary items 6 and 7 no additional explanation is needed. 3. No detail necessary. 4. The first work day he tore down the existing fence. He worked less that half a day and left all the debris in the yard. He promised to return and remove the debris later that day. He did not show up. When called, he said that he would be back on the following day. Again, he did not show up, nor did he provide a courtesy call to say that he would not be here or to identify when he would be back on site. 5. After a weather delay, he returned and erected the new fence as we expected. We felt that the vertical board quality could have been better. However, since we did not specify the type or grade of lumber, we offered no objection. 6. Shortly after he received final payment, Mr. Mauldin called to inform that his check cashing service refused to cash the second check. We reminded him that the check was written against the same account that the check cashing service accepted with the first check, and that there was nothing wrong with the account and that there was adequate funds to support the amount of the check. Mr. Mauldin again became belligerent and stated that the check cashing service informed that the check was ?no good.? He also stated that the issuing bank ?refused to accept the check.? (Do banks refuse to honor their own checks via phone contact?) 7. At this point Mr. Mauldin lost his composure and threatened to bring the ?THE LAW? to the house and stated that we had better have cash to pay him when he arrived. He further threatened that, if we did not have the cash on hand, he would tear down ?his? fence and remove it. We again repeated that he should try a different check cashing service or that he deposit the check in his business account. He responded with a tirade revolving around having to pay bills and workers immediately. And, he again threatened us and hung up. At this point, we had had enough of the unprofessional ranting of Mr. Mauldin and arranged to provide him with a check written against a local bank. FOLLOW UP: 1. At approximately 10AM on 11 May, Mr. Mauldin telephoned to inform that this write up was all lies and that it would negatively affect his business. We reviewed our write up and clarified SUMMARY comment 2 to more accurately depict the conversations with Mr. Mauldin. As the telephone call continued, Mr. Mauldin , as before, lost his composure and again made derogatory comments including that my wife had taken "my man card." At this juncture, we hung up. 2. Caveat emptor...we stand by our original report.
Description of Work: We had 70 feet of our fence, a double gate and a single gate replaced.

Response from Ladson Fences
Ladson Fences has an outstanding reputation with Angies List! We go out of our way to make the customer satisfied. We also understand that as hard as we try you can not satisfy everybody! 1.50% down was agreed on, as the job was such a small job 2.The customer was told that checks wrote in my name could cash faster and the work could get underway quicker.(again customer satisfaction) 3.As far as company decals, I had just purchased the truck and it hasnt made it to the decal shop. I dont turn down work in any areas. I also have a business license in every town I work in. I can't afford to get caught without them. 4.I told the customer in the begining that he did not have to be home for work to be done. The week the work was being performed there were thundershowers all week(we even worked in the rain one day) 5. As reported by past customers the work was more than adequate. 6&7.Yes I accepted both out of town checks as customer stated. The first check cashed at a check casher(costing $35.00 fee). The second check would not cash. I called customer and he said try again. When the check cashier run check again customers bank response was that the customer was at his check writing limit. Whatever that ment equalled to the fact that the check was no good! When I called him back he wanted me to deposit this check in my business account. I was not going to do this knowing the check would bounce and more unwanted fees! .In the process in working for this customer I never lost my composure or was out of the way at all. I have respect for elder people and this customer was no different. When the customer told me he wasnt going to make his check good I did tell him that I would take him to court(well in my legal rights). After saying somthing about court, then customer called to come to his house and pick up a local check. It became confusing why he did not write the local check in the first place to avoid all this. Our office has tried to contact the customer about retracting this report with no response. So I dont kow where the follow up comments come from! In closing Ladson Fences has won the customer satisfaction award two years in a row! Excluding this one all the other reports have A ratings! It is just not possible for this fence company to go from A plus rating to a failing F! The day that happens we will close the doors! THANK-YOU! ANTHONY L. MAULDIN SR. owner and C.E.O.

The fence is awesome, I'm loving my new found privacy. It looks really nice too. Anthony did a great job, worked quickly, and left the yard nice and neat. He went above and beyond, he secured mine and my neighbors yards to keep the dogs in while he was working, and he professionally dealt with my pesky neighbors.
Description of Work: Anthony installed a 6ft privacy fence.

Anthony responded to my initial inquiry by e-mail and followed up with a phone call. He was prompt on the day he provided the quote and was available to work right away. After considering the price for the work, I called Ladson Fences to schedule an appointment. He was out the next day, exactly at 8AM like he said he would. He explained the work and provided suggestions on other upgrades or replacement of the fence. Unfortunately the person I had put it up did not use quality lumber and after 4 years the fence has not aged gracefully. He and one other helper were there til just before noon. The work was performed as described at a very reasonable rate. Half of the other quotes I had gotten. The fence has a sloping up and down cut on it and every replace board matches the pattern of the pieces around it. He even took the time to align the gate and provide a quote to replace it if need be as it was not installed properly like the rest of the fence. He also put on a new latch I had purchased (I paid him for it though he probably would have done it either way). I felt like I got such a great deal, I thought it was fair. Very professional demeanor, informative and friendly as well as quick and quality work. I will definitely be calling Ladson Fences again and will recommend them to friends.

I was convinced that Anthony was the right person for this job right after he left when he gave an estimate. He completed teh fence ahead of schedule, hauld away the old fence, and left my property looking better than what it did when he started.

Chose Ladson Fences because of the ratings on Angies List. Anthony was very quick to come out and give us an estimate. Recommanded some things. Once we got the approval from our HOA Anthony started the job. He went over details and the contract so there was no misunderstanding. He was very professional. We are pleased with the fence. Would highly recommand him to anyone.

My dog discovered and enlarged a gap in the chain link fence along the side of my yard, enabling her to get into the neighbor's yard, creek and pluff mud. I called Ladson Fence and they came out that same afternoon to give me an estimate. They returned the next morning to repair the chain link fence and some corroded fasteners in wood privacy fence panels.

The overall experience went very well. Ladson fence quicly gave me an estimate and then came to replace the gate within the next few days. The gate is an improved design and appears to be quite sturdy. Anthony seemed to be very knowledgeable and experienced and he and his team worked quickly and efficiently, I certainly would use them again without any hesitation.
Description of Work: I had a wooden picket fence that was 12 years old and falling apart and needed replacement. The gate was custom built on-site.
