ABC Roofing & Repair

Project: Complete tear-off of approx. 360sf of flat roof and replace with a low slope (“shed”) roof with CertainTeed Flintlastic Rolled Roof System. All communication was with Sidney Cowan via phone/text/emails as well as onsite with his “foreman” Lopez. Initial Response Time For Quoting Sidney Cowan of ABC Roofing and Repairs was contacted on a Friday and he had a worker/foreman? (Lopez) on Monday to inspect and quote the project to start as soon as the next day. I was promptly sent an emailed quote from Sidney that afternoon. Pricing Seemed comparable, however, after reviewing the itemized work and materials, they were not going to replace any insulation. After adding that in, it pushed my budget a bit. Start Work/Completion After sorting/approving the quote, Sidney scheduled a crew to start work on Thursday of the same week. As of 10:30am, they had not showed up and I reached out to get an ETA. A short text from Sidney “We are working on your project today and tomorrow” but he would not give me a scheduled time. Workers showed up around noon and there were issues with the dump truck traveling from one site to the next. By the time I realized there was bits and pieces of roof/insulation debris all over my yard, it was too late. I had a conversation with Lopez to stop the demo unless they could dispose of the debris in their bin and Lopez agreed with the assurance that it would be cleaned up. I could never get a schedule from Sidney and workers randomly showed up to finish the roof for the next 2 days, finishing at dusk/night each day. During the demo work, they punched through (~5”x12”) to the interior ceiling and during the rafter installation, they dropped a rafter and made a ~2.5’x3’ hole through to the interior. Lopez said he would have guys come repair/sand/paint the holes they made and I reported the damage to Sidney that day. I had to remind Lopez of the debris and he assured me he had a clean up crew. Work was completed at dusk on Saturday and I spoke with Lopez briefly but new that I had to inspect everything in the daylight the next day. My mistake (and I am smarter than this, I promise), I paid them. After inspecting the work the next day, there were several concerns that I documented in an email to Sidney and scheduled a meeting to review the work sent the day after the crew “finished”. There were several exposed areas that had not been trimmed in wood/painted/caulked, there was so much debris (bits and pieces) in my yard that was never cleaned daily, much less when the job was complete. And I had to remind them that they punched two holes in the interior ceiling. Via email, Sidney & Lopez agreed to meet the following Tuesday at 11am. Everything reviewed, Sidney agreed to have his crew back out to take care of everything ASAP and he would get back to me that day after reviewing the crews schedule. This is where things get beyond frustrating….. Communication with Sidney up to this point was very prompt and somewhat professional via email for more documented communication and via text mainly for scheduling. After that Tuesday, Sidney suddenly delayed his responses, both email and text/phone calls. I could not get a concrete date/time when he would finish the work and it became increasingly difficult to get in touch with him. By the end of the week, Sidney decides that Sunday is the earliest best possible day for them to come back out to finish the job. It was exceedingly frustrating at this point and I just wanted them to finish their work, so I told Sidney that I would clear my schedule Sunday and waited. I waited, I called, several times, I texted. I finally got a text response from Sidney at 2:25 pm “I texted Lopez at 9 and 11am asking him what time he was going to fix your ceiling. I have not heard back” No apology, no answer to my question. I then get a screenshot from Sidney, a text from Lopez at 2:33pm that reads: “Tomorrow morning 7:30am” Again, no apology, again telling me when it is convenient for them to finish a job that was never completed and make repairs due to their negligence. Several unanswered calls and texts were made with duplicate responses never addressing the incompetence of his crew and the corners they cut to finish the job or the repairs. I gave him an ultimatum that work had to start first thing as he said, 7:30 and be completed by noon as I was not changing my schedule again. 7:30am Monday morning. No crew. No crew by 8:30am. Lopez and a couple of his guys show up at 9:15. There’s an issue with the drywall repairs, the guy he brought to do it can’t do it. There was some talk of no materials, I suggested there was a Lowes and Home Depot nearby. There was some talk of doing it after 5pm. A shoty drywall patch, two rounds of me showing them the trash in the yard, and closely inspecting the exposed hole repairs - they leave. The flat roof is now lifting on the edges, there are now hills and valleys where water is settling, the holes in the interior were patched however, never painted or sanded, and I still have roof debris in my yard. I have emailed Sidney about the new concerns but I am afraid I got ripped off by what I thought (several hours researching getting recommendations, etc.) was a reputable company. Take heed, do NOT use ABC Roofing for any of your home projects.

Great experience. Quick response, thorough estimate, bonded. On time, did a great job and rooms look great.

Rating: Poor, Poor, Poor. Sidney Cowan is the front man in this shotty operation. He is very difficult to deal with. The crew showed up somewhat on time did some work and then left the job partially complete. Additionally they left the property in a huge mess. We called to request the job to be completed and some additional work to be done and Sidney Cowan's responce was "I'll Pass". When I finally got intouch with this company to provide an invoice for the work they had completed, Sidney Cowan refused to help. This company left the job half done and is only accessable by eletronic means. Being this flightly, seems that these folks are trying to hide something. Many more roofing companies out there, We definitely wouldn't recommend ABC
