Technician quoted extremely high price for very simple job and said he would reduce price if he could at end of job.$579.00 for approx. 2 1/2 hrs including approx. $30.00 parts. Went to business location to inquire about labor charge per hour and was refused any info. Was given $65.00 credit on my bill but feel that their business practices are predatory based on what they feel the customer can afford.

Senior citizen predators!! Horrible pricing and takes advantage of those unable to speak up!! They charged over $400 to replace a $15 faucet for a 93 year old woman on SSA!! PREDATORS!!!! Regardless of their claim to be "community minded, they only want your $$$$. The work performed was only worth the service call and parts..... horrible response from "old man owner"... he says " they have a reputation"... unfortunately the pubic must not know the truth!!!!

Our garbage disposal recently quit working. Mathis plumbing returned my call promptly and sent someone out the same day to evaluate. We were given a quote to repair but the gentleman also gave us a quote to replace since the price difference was minimal and the unit had some age on it. We opted to replace the disposal. The work was done the same day and we have experienced no issues. Great customer service and quality work.

The only complaint I have is the repair men showed up & I didn't have a time frame in which they would come nor did they call to let us know, it would have been nice to have a call or anticipated time frame especially since they were at the door before 830am. Other than that service was great.

Contacted them by email, we had used them in the past with a minor unit repair, and asked for a quote to replace our gas pack unit when the air conditioner went out. It was an old unit that we had discussed replacing at the time of the repair, about three years before. We added that a remodel was to take place adding some extra room to our home about 6 months in the future, gave them the new sq. footage, and ask that the new unit meet our needs. The work was completed the next day with my son meeting them at the home. The billed us for the replacement, met us when we returned home and went over the work with us. The unit more than met the needs of our added floor space and our utility bill on gas and electric went down! We would certainly use them again, but we haven't had to!

He did an excellent job on the heat pump. A pipe coming out of the house got disconnected, he reconnected it. The toilet was leaking and he fixed that too. It took about 15 minutes for the heat pump. They were here for about a total of one hour. They were a little expensive. The trouble is that they hire new workers who train on the job. Sometimes the job is not up to par.

They are very good and reliable, will come when you call, and do excellent work. Also, they are nice, knowledgeable, and very friendly when they come. We haven't had any problems with their work as they provide good quality of work. I do wish their pricing was a little lower.

My apartment complex has used Mathis plumbing numerous times and every time, the technicians were polite, professional and were able to come up with solutions to some very complex problems. There was little to no mess every time they came on to our property and I would definitely use them again. They are a great, fair priced company. I have absolutely no problems with this company and they have done work for us that no other companies wanted to do and for a very fair price.
Description of Work: I had a 2" polybutylene hot water pipe spring a leak behind a wall in a kitchen. After identifying the spot of the leak, the plumbers were quick to get the parts they needed and come out to repair the line. The pipe had to be snaked through the existing pipe back to the hot water heaters, joined with a different kind of pipe, since the pipe in our walls is not made any more, and they did it all with residents still in the apartments.

I called Mathis Plumbing because of a leak in my water line. They did show up on time and were very professional and polite. They dug out the water meter and found the leak. They said they could fix it. I was going on vacation and needed it done right away. It took only an hour, but it still cost about $500!!! They only replaced 6 inches of pipe. The work they did was done with products from the local hardware store. For this price I expected a little more done than what I could have done in half the time.

Even though I just ran across [member name removed] review back in 2009 and since I never had the opportunity to discuss these concerns with [member name removed], I thought it would be proper to respond at this time (2013). I went back and printed the history for [member name removed] from our database for this service call. I will give the facts as it relates to [member name removed] post. [member name removed] called in after lunch on 10/8/2009 and stated he had a leak at his water meter in which he was informed by the local water authority (CPW). Our documentation also shows the following: - We responded to his request that afternoon as requested. - We dispatched a Service Technician and helper at 3:20 PM to [member name removed] home on the lake. - We arrived on the jobsite at 3:45 PM. My Technician and helper assessed and gave [member name removed] a firm “Up-Front Price” of $425.00 for digging up and properly repairing the leak, not the “higher” about $500.00” cost as he indicated. - We completed the repair and checked out our work at 5:00 PM. It was well after 5:00 when both men arrived back at the shop to end their day (the shop and office were closed by this time). - Part of their time was on overtime in which we paid our employees. [member name removed] could have saved a little expense if we were allowed to have come and repair the line the next morning. Evidently, the leak had been going on for a while until it was noticed. I understand now the urgency was due to [member name removed] vacation schedule. - Our big box trucks are not stocked with materials from local hardware stores as he indicated. We use products from plumbing supply houses that we purchase for our Residential, Commercial and Industrial customers. If we are going to guarantee and warranty, we are going to install good quality products that we feel are the best and will give the longest service for our customers. We warranty our products and workmanship for one (1) full year from time of installation. - [member name removed] seems to simplify by saying that we replaced only 6” of pipe. The fact is, in a repair situation, you normally don’t replace a long section that would usually involve a backhoe, trencher, etc. By my Service Technician’s write-up, they used 4- SCH 80 (heavy duty) PVC ells, 1-sch 80(heavy duty) Male adapter, cleaner, heavy bond glue as well as some pipe. This indicates to me that the problem at the meter was tight and they had to dig out and install an offset in the line to obtain a good and proper repair. - The repair price was given up-front to [member name removed] before we performed any work. He signed my Technician’s work order which authorized us to perform the work at the price given. At completion, he signed the Technician’s workorder acknowledging satisfactory completion with our work. He had the opportunity to deny the repair and all he would have only owed us the discounted service trip fee of $29.50 that he was quoted when he called in. - Now after the fact and the urgency of the leak had been eliminated, in my opinion he unfairly goes online to give us a bad review. Only guess I can make for his actions was maybe due to buyer's remorse. - At the end of his post, I am baffled by his statement “for this price I expected a little more done than what I could have done in half the time”. Why would [member name removed] have needed to call us for his problem if he was knowledgeable and capable of making the repair himself? He says he could have done it in half the time that a trained Technician who has been performing this type of work for years. I guess it is easy to make this type of statement after the fact. I see that [member name removed] at least complimented Mathis in arriving in a timely manner, was professional and polite and evidently performed a good quality repair since I haven’t heard of any warranty issues from him in the past 3 ½ years…….. Being in a family owned business for over 60 years, I would rather defend pricing anytime than having to defend poor service, poor quality or providing substandard workmanship. With most people, value is remembered way after the price has been forgotten. Hopefully now, [member name removed] at least sees a little Value in the repair we made for the price he agreed to Upfront….

In Feb or March the well that provides water to our house went dry. I called a well and pump company to come fix the problem. This man came out, looked over the system, replaced a valve controller, opened and closed a few valves and got the water flowing to the house (and the heater). He said that he did not work on heating units and if there was a problem with restarting the heater to call someone else. The heater did not work so I called Mathis plumbing heating and air. When Mathis came out they did not fix the system (that could have been fixed), gave me an estimate for a new heating system, charged us for a service call and left. After fixing the problem myself I called Mathis and told Mr. Mathis that I was very disappointed in what happened. I did not mind paying $58 if they had fixed the problem or if the system could not be fixed at all. However, I had a problem paying $58 for them to fix the problem when they could have fixed it but did not. Mathis then sent out their most exprerienced heating person to look over the situation. After seeing the system he told me that his repair man was correct and there was a leak in the system and system needed to be replaced. I found out later (from a plumber that came out for a different problem) that the "leak" was an open valve that should have been shut. I do not know who opened it (could have been the pump repair man or the Mathis repair man) but the Mathis people should have found it and closed it since they were looking for a leak. Their ad in the phone book states "If we don't treat your home with care and respect...you don't pay". I was never offered a refund of my money even though they could have fixed the problem but did not. I do not feel that our home was treated with respect.
Description of Work: I called them to fix our heat pump that had stopped working when the well providing the water for the heat exchanger went dry. The pump had been fixed by a different company and was working fine but the other company did not work on heating units. When Mathis sent out a repairman he looked over the system, checked some valves and told me that one, we had a leak in the system and two, that they could not fix my system. They gave me an estimate for a new system, charged me $58 for the service call and left. About three days later I talked to the previous owner of the house and he told me to open two valves on the system and the heater would work. I opened the valves and the heater worked fine.

In responding to his complaint, I need to provide you with the other information that he left out. Previously, on 1/3/08 he called in for service. We responded promptly on 1/3/08 & found the "water source" heat pump performing to it capacity. We informed him, to maximize the under-performing unit, some duct work needs to be reworked & new valves, flow meter & pressure temp gauges were needed. He declined all options to help his insufficient unit to work better. For these two trips we only charged one standard fee of $59. He had bought this house and wasn't familiar with this type of system. The service trip that he is referring to in his complaint was taken on 3/30/09; he called for no hot water & no heat. He was informed again of our fees. We again promptly responded the same day. Since he said "no hot water", my Service Manager dispatched a plumbing tech. He found nothing wrong with the hot water heater, but a bad expansion tank, in which he declined to replace. My tech called back to the office for a HVAC tech to respond. My pluming tech didn't charge for his trip/time. When the HVAC tech arrived, there was no mention of having a previous well problem. If he had, my plumbing tech would have inspected the system while he was there. The "closed loop system" wasn't putting enough water thru heat pump. The line pressure gauges indicated that there was a water pressure drop so the "common sense" deduction is there must be a leak int he closed loop. They asked him about the location of the outside water loop, but he said he didn't know. He even told my men that he had two wells & he didn't know which one supplied the heat pump. Finding a leak in a water loop without knowing location can be very costly. This is when they told him, since it must be a leak in line and the unit is old & under performing anyway, it would be best to install a new standard heat pump. He declined & we charged him the $59 trip/diagnostic fee but no fee was charged for a repair. He later called to complain, so I sent our HVAC Operations Manager, to his house at no charge just to appease him. By doing a visual inspection & knowing what our tech's did, he also deducted the conditions indicate a leak. Afterward, he calls the previous owner for any details. The previous owner told him a place where some valves were located & make sure they were open. He said he opened a valve & heat started working. But he now contradicts himself by saying another plumber said the leak was an open valve that should have been shut, so which was it? My tech's didn't open or shut valves to re-regulate any flow. Why would they, they were told the system just stopped working so they deducted the loop line not staying full was due to a leak. He failed to give them the critical information of his past well problems. He did tell me later about opening a valve & it started working. I told him I was glad it was working now for him. He evidently doesn't realize that we didn't charge him for a repair. We only charged one $59 diagnostic/trip fee for our trips. I don' t think we have been unfair with our charge. But why wait 6 months to complain? If I felt this strong, I would have reported it to the BBB or taken it to small claims court. He just chose an easy avenue to intimidate us. This is an unfair complaint. Surely, he can see the whole picture & can realize his part in the misdiagnosis. Mathis Plumbing and Heating has just been honored by S.C. as the "SBA Family Owned Business of the Year" as well as the entire Southeast 8-State Region. Since documented customer service and fairness is just one small requirement of being nominated, I think this should give credibility to my response. He quoting our ad, "If we don't treat your home with care and respect, you don't pay". We didn't damage anything? I now realize we have actually lost way more than the $59 he paid. Wayne Mathis-VP
