John O Syrjala Jr

We have lived on Daniel Island, SC for over seven years and in that time, we have hired dozens of contractors for various projects and maintenance tasks. With a few exceptions our experiences have been generally positive but John Syrjala Jr. is far and away the best contractor we have ever worked with. The primary project was to replace a wooden staircase with a brick one. I was expecting that building a brick staircase would be significantly more expensive than a wood replacement but Mr. Syrjala’s bid was actually less than some of the wood-based bids. Without reservation I can say that Mr. Syrjala’s prices are very reasonable! Mr. Syrjala is an amazing, professional mason who works carefully and takes no shortcuts. The demolition of the old staircase was accomplished quickly, there was no mess and he carted away all the old material. He then dug and poured a cement footing, despite it being a relatively small area he used enough rebar to support a major structure. He found brick that was a perfect match to our 12-year-old home and did a beautiful job of building the stairs. During the two weeks he worked at our home there was never a time that there was any mess and he left the area around the project site looking better than before he started. The stairs look great! We also had Mr. Syrjala complete a hardscape project for us and construct some foundation piers, this work was done to the same high standards and at very reasonable cost. We recommend Mr. Syrjala without reservation, and are confident that you would have an equally positive experience.

Very reasonable estimate. Honest about when he was available. Improved the structural integrity of the original design, so it is not likely to need repair ever again. While we had to wait in line for him, he came as originally promised and the wait was well worth it!

John is very polite and professional. He returned calls on a prompt basis and his follow-up was always “on time” as scheduled. He provided a clear and concise estimate and did not vary from the cost. He always addressed my inquiries in the most concise and transparent manner. I found him to be an honest man and a fine mason. We were very pleased with the quality of his work.

John did a great job! He was professional, quick, and reasonably priced. We were very impressed with him. We are having him come again to build us some brick pillars and a pigeon wall! Can't wait!

Fabulously well; they did the work in a short period of time; the brick edging is gorgeous--neat and organized.

He did really excellent work. He gave me a reasonable price up front and made no attempt to change it. We salvaged some brick from enlarging the size of the crawlspace opening, and the rest he went to a brick place and found to match. He then interspersed the new brick with the brick that came from the house so that you can hardly detect any work was done, even when you're staring at it looking for differences. He matched the grout in both color and style of application, and we are really pleased. He and his son came when they said they would, cleaned up after themselves, and were very polite. We have already recommended them to neighbors and would definitely use their company again.

Our fireplace, built in 1979, had broken bricks due to our using them to chop wood for kindling. we were young and had no idea of the damage we were doing. Letting John put his masonry magic to work resulted in an updated modern look and feel to our fireplace that will last as long as our home. He is very courteous, prompt and easy going. I had my doubts about finding matching bricks, but John came through with flying colors. I would recommend John to anyone needing masonry work, inside or out, and would hire him again for any future work.

John was very professional and always left the worksite clean after he finished for the day. I needed some ideas of what I could do with the material I had in the yard and his suggestions were great! He and his son were very polite and pleasant while working in my yard. He gave me a quote and when additional costs came up with additional materials needed he would inform me. He would let me know when he would be working in the yard. I would definitely recommend him to anyone and as a result of his work in my yard two neighbors have hired him to do work for them.

Very polite and reliable person. Did incredible work on the house and fence. He went above and beyond; suggesting improvements that would make the fence last longer and look better. I will definitely ask him to do work in the future.

Because John did such a fabulous job for me previously, I called him to come back again and do the border around a large area in the back yard. The area is large enough so that he designed a walkway into it in order to access the bench. Gorgeous--can't ask for better. The price includes the cost of the bricks as well as labor. Fabulous work; great person, caring, gentle, knowledgeable and very committed and conscientious. Thanks John--I think of you each time I go into the backyard.

Awesome! It is beyond gorgeous and beyond my expectations. John was great in giving us a bunch of ops regarding the type and color of concrete bricks to use. He provided costs estimates for each option. He made suggestions regarding color which would coordinate with the brick on the house, ordered the materials; was right here when they were delivered and immediately placed the bricks in around the beds to get them off the driveway asap so we could get in and out of our garage without any waiting. Completed the work in 2 days. The edging served a 2 fold purpose---to keep mulch and beds from draining into the grass and aesthetically to put the finishing touches to the property. I have used John in the past to install a concrete patio--it is beyond SWEET! Everyone who comes to the house is awed by it. A fab job and very reasonable cost. You will never go wrong to use John!

In the messages I left him, I described what I wanted, and requested he contact me with questions or to schedule a meet. It was a $1500 job....maybe beneath him, but he never returned my calls..............

We picked out the stone and told John what we wanted it to look like. He was very creative and it looks great.

He did a brilliant job. Everyone in the neighborhood has commented on the work he did. He was professional and showed up on time. He explained everything thoroughly, and he was very neat and tidy. He never left a mess, and everything was well-appointed at the end of eachthw rokday. His timing was perfect, and he really stands behind his work. He is very honest. He was quite affordable, and I will absolutely plan to use him again.
