I hired PHD to address moisture issues we had in our crawlspace. We had mold growth throughout. I had already interviewed 2 or 3 other providers of crawl space encapsulation, and PHD was recommended by a guy I spoke with through our HVAC contractor. At anyrate, I met with Rich Pace out of Charlotte who seemed to me, to be very knowledgeable. The system he recommended, from a pricing perspective seemed reasonable and also included the mold cleanup removal. I was told this would be a two day process. My home is in a neighborhood. On day one the crew arrived and a number of guys parked down by the road. I came outside and one guy was off the side of the road taking a leak out in the open (sure the neighbors would appreciate that). On day one, the guys breezed through mold cleanup, layed out the moisture barrier material, and by days end, it appeared to be a work in progress. Day 2, two guys showed up with the spray foam insulation rig to spray the crawl space walls. After spraying the foam and cleaning up, they were ready to call the job complete. When I asked when they would be back to finish up, he looked at me funny. They were supposed to be installing a gravity drain, as well as install a dehumidifier, neither had been done. Also, there were signs that the crew did not clean up all the mold, and not all the moisture barrier material had been sealed like it should have (around the pillars and other areas). The guy was supposed to come back and finish the next day. By end of the week, the job was still not finished. I ended up getting a hold of Rich in Charlotte and he came down to “complete” the work. He breezed through things and was in a hurry to head out to go out on vacation. I made the mistake of paying him thinking everything was complete. After a couple weeks I noticed some things… some of the foam did not appear to adhere to the wall properly. I also found cracks in the foam. I had two other spray foam experts come look at the job and they explained the foam wasn’t mixed properly for the cold weather and it had shrunk and cracked. They also pointed out other short comings of the work PHD performed. I emailed rich and asked him to come by to address the issues. I didn’t hear back. I then called him from my work phone (different number) and got a hold of him. Told me about the issues I saw and he agreed to come by and take a look. I walked around and showed him all the shotty work. He played things down like it wasn’t that bad. He was then supposed to send a guy out to “fix” everything that needed to be addressed. A supervisor was also supposed to come along with the guy to make sure everything was complete. Turns out the guy he sent out was the same fella who sprayed the foam to begine with. They brought a portable spray foam tank with them and apparently the guy had problems with it. He went to lowes and bought a bunch of “Great Stuff” foam (which was inadequate for the job on hand), and went around and filled gaps. I ended up going under the home to inspect and half the things I pointed out still was not corrected. I ended up going through myself and things up. This is very frustrating. I am actually looking to have my spray foam work done in my attic (from a different company of course). I will have that company fine comb through my crawl space and correct what PHD failed to fix. I would also mentioned that Rich Pace (owner) was supposed to be present in both cases when work was being done to supervise, but in neither case was present. PHD (Pure Home Dynamics) is based out of Charlotte and has a satellite office in Columbia (Peeples St.). http://www.phdcarolina.com/
Description of Work: I had mold growth in my crawl space. PHD was to perform the crawl space encapsulation. Their system includes laying down a vapor barrier, sealing it around the edges and pillars. Next spray foam the walls. Next, install a gravity drain and a dehumidifier. Some of this work isn't quite right, see my story.

Response from PURE HEALTH DYNAMICS
The warranty for the work performed at this home revolves around performance of the install. What I guarantee is that humidity in the crawl during the wet season will not exceed 65% and that wood moisture content will not exceed 16%. I am positive that this install is performing well within these specifications. As for the insulation his main complaint was that the insulation did not bond at the very edges to the foundation wall. This also will not effect performance. I am sure that his crawl space is maintaining 55+ degrees on the coldest winter's day. If the insulation were to fall off of the wall we would have gladly repaired it with the spray foam rig. However, when insulation is sprayed onto a solid masonry wall and the last 1/2 inch is not bonded there is no performance concern. If the insulation cracks all that needs to be done to ensure best performance is to seam the gap with some type of filler (spray foam or caulk). An 1/8 inch crack is negligible in the overall thermal performance of the system. Building code actually restricts the spraying (insulating) of the top and bottom 3 inches of the crawl space wall. This is a much bigger energy penalty yet the Energy Code states that even this much larger area is negligible. I have no excuse for the urination complaint. I was not there (and never said I would be) so I did not witness the event. I did remind my workers that this and cigarette butts on peoples property were unacceptable. We have installed over 2000 crawl spaces since 2004. Things do sometimes go wrong. I will be glad to provide any prospective client the names of customers where we had issues and they can provide you with accounts of how we stood behind our work and services.
