AMS is a moving brokerage company. We received a phone call 2 days before to confirm the date of March 12 for our move. On Saturday, they called to say they would not be there til Sunday. Saturday night the driver Paul of the agent Able Movers left a message stating they would not be there til Monday. My husband called him back to advise that since our closing was scheduled for Monday we needed them to come on Sunday since it was already past the date agreed upon well in advance. Paul called us back and agreed. Paul arrived with two teenagers who both informed us they were not professional movers and had been rounded up last minute to help with the move. They dragged a piano across our hardwood floors gouging them and breaking the piano. They repeatedly hit ceilings and walls causing great damage. They did not cover the staircase carpeting or any other carpeting grinding dirt into the recently cleaned carpet. The teenagers sat outside during breaks late into the night swearing in front of my children. My real estate agent came over during this situation and said she had never seen such a botched up move in her life. We agreed we had to put off the closing. I had to stay at a local hotel with my children and put off our move while we had carpets cleaned and I repaired walls and ceilings. My husband had to take a flight to Jacksonville to begin his new job instead of driving with me as we had planned. Yet another expense. The floor damage was estimated by a company at 5000 dollars. The movers said the new owners could file a claim for this. I stayed for 3 nights trying to prepare the house for closing. We followed the moving van out of our dvlpmt and saw it almost topple over in a ditch confirmed by one of the teenage movers also following behind. When after having our items stored for several months we received delivery of our items we were shocked. Though we had paid extra for fragile packing most things were not packed at all. Computers were put into boxes with no packing. Glass dishes were placed in boxes with various other items all unwrapped. Lamps, statues and other valuables were put in boxes unprotected. Parts to put together gaming tables and other furniture were nowhere to be found. We took pictures of the boxes as we opened them. My grandmother's china from the 1800's was smashed. I no longer have any complete sets of dishes. An Italian marble table was broken. Our electronic bed is broken. 2 of the three computers do not work, from being unwrapped in boxes. All lamps were broken. My husband's awards and my daughter's carousel were smashed. This is just a smattering of the damage to our property. We filled out the claim form and sent it with many photos to both AMS and Able movers, verified received through signatures. Their forms state to allow 30 to 90 days. Though this time has elapsed, no response was received by either company. Through countless hours of phone calls the company reimbursed us for 200 of the 300 dollars it cost to clean the carpet. They also sent somebody over who glued and patched the broken piano. As previously mentioned, they said the new owner could file a claim for floor damage. My real estate agent handled that situation at the walk-through. When I Spoke with Eric regarding not having professional movers, the unexpected delay of closing, the flight, the hotel stay, the wall and ceiling damage, etc. His response was that we had more things than they thought, and that they had paid us 200 for carpet cleaning. He also told me he had people to handle these things, and did I think that Bill Gates handled these things? No, he has people to do it. After this conversation, it did not surprise me that he did not respond to my claim. The only positive thing is that the moving team who delivered my things in Houston were courteous and professional. However, the damage had been done.
Description of Work: This company was contracted with to move us from Houston, Tx to Jacksonville , Fl with storage in between.

Response from America's Moving Services
She points out that we are licensed as a moving brokerage. We are licensed as both a carrier and a broker. In her specific case, her move was contracted to a carrier based in Chicago, IL, Able Moving. As per US DOT law and our agreement which she signed, all claims for damage, loss, etc are to be placed on the carrier, who in this case is Able Moving. She did report her damages to our company and we forwarded the information to Able Moving for their review to process the claim. She sent an email to our company on December 19, 2011 stating that she had not been contacted by the carrier and that her claim had not yet been resolved. She also stated in that same email that she had “no wish to discuss this matter further verbally”. We attempted to contact Able Moving on several occasions without any response and we have not yet been able to get any calls returned by their company. She did not purchase additional insurance through our company or Able Moving based on the information we have, and that would entitle her to receive the coverage required by law of $0.60 per pound per article for damages. Based on the claim she submitted, the weight of the items reported as damaged total 479 pounds, excluding the piano, which as she mentioned was already repaired. 479 pounds at $0.60 per pound total $287.40. As a gesture of goodwill, we are willing to compensate the customer a total of $500 to settle this claim, in addition to the compensation she received to go towards carpet cleaning and the repairs received on her piano. Since Able Moving been unresponsive, we are willing to step in to resolve this matter on behalf of the carrier. Unfortunately, we are not willing to compensate the requested $2,500, as we have not been shown any certificate of insurance that would otherwise entitle her to replacement cost coverage. We will only agree to the $500 if she signs a release letter from our company and agrees to re-file this claim under the appropriate party, Able Moving, who actually performed the move. I have used their services twice. They moved me from Atlanta to Huntington, PA then again to Dublin. I am very happy with their services. They were so organized, efficient, and professional. They were trustworthy and moved everything just perfectly.
