Description of Work: I live in Hunters Trace and during the recent storm we had a tree fell down. One of the members of the HOA contacted Paul for an entire week and never received the courtesy of a call back even though she called every day. I realize their is no emergency service but not even a call back. Another tree service was called and were out the next morning. They did a fantastic job.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SERVICE. It has taken them over 3 months to do a 1 1/2 day job in our yard. Very few return calls to inform us what was going on, weeks between visits, scheduled work was not done (so they had to return), not showing up on scheduled days and showing up unannounced on other days. Even though they eventually finished the job on Friday, 10/17, (started on July 18 or 25), the lack of communication and poor work quality is not worth the hassle at any price. Did I mention they parked a truck in my flower bed and trampled some of my 3 foot tall lantana? Of course, you can be sure the owner, Paul Mulkay, will be here tomorrow to pick up his check!
Description of Work: Cleared out a green border on one side of our house and removed a sweet gum tree.

The last time I used them was a year ago. They did a good job and I have used them twice. It went well and I was not as happy with the hedge as I was with everything else. I was not happy with the clean up. I would use them again.

We have worked with Paul Mulkey and The Tree Clinic in the past and received excellent service. When I called, I was actually out of town on personal business. Paul offered to go ahead and go to the house to examine the tree with the cavity and give me a proper estimate for all the work. Because I was out of town, we did everything by phone, which meant a little phone tag, but from the time I made the initial phone call to the time of the work, was only about 2 weeks. That also gave us time to get permission from our home owners association for the maintenance pruning. When he called with the estimate, we discussed the tree with the cavity. He said it was approx 1/3 of the way thru, which could be a hazard. He suggested the pruning to reduce the weight on the tree and then monitoring it for any changes. He said some trees may change in a year, and others in 20 years. It also appears that when the work was done, they may have sprayed something inside the cavity to seal it. We agreed to have the work done, and it was completed while I was out of town. I then paid using a credit card over the phone. He said if we had any issues, we could address them when we got back in town. However, as I said, we've used the in the past and had no problems. When I did finally return home, I was pleased with the work. I was glad to see a large part of one tree had been removed, almost like it was topped, but that portion was very dead and a danger. The tree is right beside our driveway and I am glad I now don't have to worry about it falling. We wanted to get the dead limbs out of the trees and to thin them so that any storm winds would pass thru. We are very happy with the results. I also appreciate Paul willing to do this all by phone. It made things a lot easier for me.
Description of Work: We had all the trees pruned. This included raising the canopy, thinning the growth within, and removing large dead limbs. We had the trees fertilized and treated for insects. We also had one tree with a large cavity that was inspected. The decision was to reduce the weight on the tree with the pruning and then continue to monitor for changes.

I found Paul Mulkey and the Tree Clinic using Angie's List. He came out and did a walk about on the property with me, explaining in detail what he saw as problems and what were assets. He was very patient and answered all my questions thoroughly. He is extremely knowledgeable about trees, it being a family business passed down from his father. I learned a lot from him, and he waited patiently while I took notes about varieties and species and such. I never felt rushed although I knew he had a very busy business. His crew arrived at the designated time and they too were extremely professional and courteous, and even offered to stack wood for me. They left nary a branch on the ground when they were finished with the pruning. I should mention that the office manager is also very friendly and helpful. Their system for taking messages and returning calls is very efficient, and I can tell it is there to enhance customer communication. Any time I left a message for Paul, he got back to me almost immediately. I had them back again last month to retreat the trees and the ground. I am extremely pleased with the work and expertise of Paul and The Tree Clinic and I know my trees and landscape are in excellent hands. I recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: The Tree Clinic treated several trees for root boring insects and treated several other trees for scale. They also treated the lawn for fire ants, and fertilized all of the trees and applied oils. In addition they removed a severely leaning river birch trunk and pruned about six trees total, including a magnolia. Might have been more.

Description of Work: I called The Tree Clinic for advice on a palm tree and was scheduled an appointment for Friday, July 1st at 11:30 am. Mr. Mulkey cancelled that meeting at 9 am stating there were "tree emergencies" and that emergencies came first. I agreed and he re-scheduled the appointment for 9:30 on Wednesday, July 6th. I rearranged my schedule to be home for this meeting. He called at 8:30 on July 6th stating that Interstate 26 was closed due to a traffic accident and "HE WAS ADVISED" not to come. I explained that I-26 was closed WESTBOUND and he was coming eastbound. He replied that he had to go back. I said that by the time he got to my house, accessed the problem with my tree, that I-26 Westbound would be open (please note that as I type this...I 26 Westbound had already opened 2 of the 4 lanes). This was a blatant lie and excuse for not having to drive from his point of business to Summerville. Not only did he cancel two appointments and make me re-arrange my schedule twice but he suggested that I could take a palm leaf to the Extension Service on Meeting Street and they determine what was wrong with my tree. When I called The Tree Clinic to complain, it was explained to me that Mr. Mulkey was the "owner" of this business.. so my question to the "owner" is: When you called and said "HE WAS ADVISED" not to travel I 26....who advised you as you were the owner? Another lie? I guess The Tree Clinic has too many customers and doesn't need another. I would never call this company again and strongly advise any other customers to stay away from this unethical individual. Two meetings cancelled and all I got was lost time!

Response from THE TREE CLINIC
I am absolutely disappointed and quite frankly shocked at this review. The member is correct in that I did call at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 1st to reschedule our 11:30 a.m. appointment due to trees falling on houses in both Folly Beach and James Island overnight. Naturally, as any homeowner would understand, these jobs were made priority. I'm happy to provide her with the names and numbers of both customers should she wish to confirm that I was not making up reasons to cancel her appointment. In fact, my intentions were quite the opposite. As soon as I knew of the emergency tree removals, I immediately called her to reschedule as I am always appreciative of the opportunity to do business with a client, and I make every effort to be prompt, courteous and professional. As for her claim that I am not interested in business in Summerville, this is completely false. I have numerous customers in Summerville, and would not waste time or money advertising that I serve the Summerville area if I wasn't interested or willing to do work there. In response to the second appointment scheduled for Wednesday, July 6th at 9:30 a.m., she is also correct in that I called at 8:30 to reschedule as there was a fatal accident that caused considerable traffic delays on I-26 and actually rerouted traffic. Anyone listening to traffic reports on the radio that morning can attest that emergency crews working the scene of the accident were advising travelers to find alternate routes vs. using the interstate as traffic was backed up significantly. Yes, the accident occurred in the WESTBOUND lanes, which when traveling from downtown Charleston to Summerville, one would take the westbound lanes of I-26--NOT the eastbound lanes as the member incorrectly implied in her review. With response to the traffic not being an issue on my return trip back, there were already significant traffic delays, and I would've been late to my three remaining morning appointments had I kept her appointment--I would've been late getting there (traveling westbound) and therefore late leaving. As a businessman, I tried to do the right thing by offering to reschedule for later that afternoon. The member was not interested and instead proceeded to berate me. I then suggested that she could take a leaf from the tree to Clemson Extension, and they would be able to help her solve her issue with the tree at no charge. She grew even angrier at my solution to her not wanting to reschedule the appointment yet still needing assistance with her tree, and hung up on me. Again, I am shocked and disappointed that the member would write a review twisting the truth in an attempt to deceive my previous and future customers about my work ethic and professionalism. I take both very seriously. My dedication to my customers and their trees, and my reputation as an honest and fair businessman obviously show as I have been in business for 22 years. Unfortunately situations arise where we all have had to reschedule appointments for one reason or another. Sadly, fallen tree emergencies and a fatal car accident tying up morning traffic for hours on the interstate aren't acceptable reasons in the member's opinion. What saddens me the most is that I believe the member generally cares about the health of her tree, and we always appreciate people who love and care for their plants. I sincerely wanted to help her. With regards to the statement that I am an “ unethical individual” because of a fatal car accident and two fallen tree emergencies that prevented me from keeping our appointments, I believe this statement is slander and defamation of character. Especially when I called ahead to let her know I needed to reschedule, attempted to reschedule—which she wasn’t interested in—and then proceeded to give her free advice on how to still get the answers she needed concerning the health of her tree. How does this make me unethical when I tried to do the right thing on all accounts? Lastly, I made a personal attempt to talk to the member by phone after reading her review today. When I asked her about it and tried to clear up the misunderstandings she obviously has, she said she wrote what she felt is the truth and then hung up on me again. Her behavior doesn’t make any sense, and sadly goes to show we can't make everyone happy, but I always try.

Loved the service! Was charged $200 under estimate. His crew worked quickly and efficiently removing 9 trees and prunning 6 (two which are large Grand Oaks). The crewman who pruned the Grand Oaks in the front yard worked magic. The trees truly look like a work of art. I get compliments all the time. His right-hand man kept the crew in order and oversaw the demo (tree removal), Their machine broke grinding a stump into the ground. It was the end of the day and they returned first thing in the morning with new equipment and completed the job. If you are looking to spend serious money on tree services, this is a company you can trust. BTW, their quote was thousands of dollars under competing companies. That's right, THOUSANDS! I got five different quotes and needed some serious work done. Paul Mulkey personally came to my home to talk to me. He was the only owner that did not send a crew member to speak to me and give me an estimate. Half of the quotes were so overpriced, I felt they were trying to take advantage of me being a young woman. I suggest you at the minimum get a free estimate and speak with Paul Maulkey of the Tree Clinic. I will continue to use them, year after year.
Description of Work: Removed 9 trees, pruned at least 6 trees and a row of overgrown wild brush that runs the entire length of my land. Also grinded all stumps to a pulp. Created and installed prop/support for one very large Grand Oak limb resting on a brick wall. The limb no longer bears any weight on the brick fence wall. Grinded all trees down on site. Removed all debris from yard and driveway. They left both the front and back yards spic-n-span clean.

I received an estimate from Paul Mulkey today. I have extensive work that needs to be done in my yard with several different areas I would like to address. Paul was able to give me a separate estimate on each area at my request. And while we butted heads on which trees should be removed and which ones should stay, he remained professional and gave good arguments to support his suggestions. If it was up to me, I would have them all chopped down. His knowledge of landscaping as well as tree services is what has me reconsidering how much I should remove. Not only is his vision of the property as a whole (landscaping, privacy, fencing, tree pruning) unique from other estimates I have received, his prices are considerably lower. Also leaving some of my large trees will save us thousands (+$5000). I am known for being stubborn as a bull and for Paul to have me reconsidering anything is pretty amazing. I have to admit. His ideas are good. In fact, many of them were great. If you are in need for tree services, I suggest having the Tree Clinic be one of your choices for a free estimate. Regardless who you choose to complete the job, you will not be disappointed with a visit from Paul Mulkey of the Tree Clinic. I have not yet decided on which company to use but the Tree Clinic is a front runner on my list. I will post another review once the work has been completed.
Description of Work: I was given a free estimate on tree and shrub removal. Paul Mulkey gave me tons of landscaping ideas which I did not ask for but was greatly appreciated. Landscaping is a cheaper alternative to tree and shrub removal which is less money in his pocket but more money in mine. This was the difference between his and other quotes I received. Other companies just saw $ signs when I told them I wanted several trees gone. Paul cared more about preserving the beauty of the trees and landscaping than the thousands of dollars it would take to remove them. You don't find service like that anymore! While some trees do need to be removed, several can be preserved with proper pruning. This allows me to save some of the grand live oaks in my yard instead of spending thousands to chop them down.

They came out and gave me an estimate and they were very nice. My interaction with them was wonderful. They were polite and helpful and gave me a lot of information even though all they were doing was an estimate. They were exactly on time and very professional. I got estimates from two other companies and I went with one of them. I would use them in the future if necessary.

They were traffic to work with. He walked around the lawn with me and explained everything to me. I'm new to the area and he was very helpful. They were about 400 dollars less then the other estimates. The place was cleaner when they left then when the came. It was traffic. I would absolutely use them in the future and we even recommend them to our neighbor.

The owner, Paul, is a known Arborist in the area and has his own radio show. They periodically come and feed our trees. Since they have done a big job for us, they also come every six months to check on everything for us. They came out initially and did a very professional estimate. They then did everything that they said they would in the estimate with no surprises in price. We do not pay an ongoing fee for them to come out twice a year. They will give us an estimate if we need anymore services done. I will continue to use them in the future and would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I have had them out to prune, to treat diseased trees, and to feed, etc.
