It didn’t go very well. I called to make arrangements for Mr. King to come out, and he informed me that the deal wasn’t any good. He said there was no way he could do the 100 cubic feet for what I'd bought. He said there would be a very large surcharge of around $300 because it was a short load. I asked that he contact me if he is in the neighborhood but I've never heard from him.

Trey King designed a great plan for our limited space. He gave excellent suggestions and recommendations for what we might need. We had a small problem with tile person which was resolved. Trey kept in constant contact and answered all questions promptly. Our new bathroom is beautiful and has added significant value to our home.

They did not get my email correspondence through Angie's List. When we finally connected, we just couldn't figure out a good way to accomplish the task. I couldn't afford to spend more, either.

We expected to have the advertisement honored, especially the part that stated that labor and materials were included. We received a contract about 3.5 months after we signed up for the deal for $43K, not including any materials, except cabinets. We were responsible for paying for and supplying tile, counter tops, light fixtures, back splash, door knobs and pulls. We also asked about any warranty and we were basically told these were worthless regardless of what anyone promised. Trey is definitely honest so we appreciated that. But just have to remember if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is! I think there was a lack of communication between the service provider and Angie's list. Just recommend before signing up, confirm all details with the service provider. And be prepared to pay extra for ANY upgrades or add-ons.

We found that the ad he had placed on Angie’s List was a bit misleading, and he told us that it was not worth his time to come out for our project due to its size. We ended up cancelling and getting a refund.

Response from King Construction
The difference between Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau is that comments about me and my company are completely unfiltered by Angie and there really is no recourse when inaccurate information is posted. As I have stated in earlier responses any and all issues with the "Big Deal" should be addressed with Angie, not me. Specifically to this member: GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT SIR. I never even spoke to this man and I had a very pleasant 20 minute conversation with his wife explaining why her particular concrete needs could not be met for the $599 offer and I went in to detail explaining each reason. Our conversation ended with me asking her to send me her address and I would come to her house and give her a legitimate offer to do the work, I never heard anything back from her.

I called for an appointment and told Mr King I am an Angie's List member. I told him I have a small flooring job that will take take maybe two days. I needed someone to take up, trim and relay my living and dining room bamboo floor. I told him I had trouble getting people to make and keep appointments. I told him if the work is satisfactory (not superior- all I wanted was satisfactory), there would be other bigger jobs including a kitchen remodeling and a bathroom reconstruction. Mr King same-day cancelled two appointments. Then he referred me to someone else, a flooring company, who also same-day cancelled two appointments. When I said don't bother with a third try, a female rep from the flooring company arrived after all just to chastise me for choosing bamboo over real hardwood, berate Lumber Liquidators for selling bamboo in the humid Lowcountry, and suggested I class-action sue Lumber Liquidators. She said she would follow up with any pending class action law suits and get back to me about fixing my floor. I told her I chose some tile at Melcer Tile for the foyer. She said for me to buy tile from her. She never called back. That was a couple of months ago. Mr King never called me to check on me to see how the job went with the lady.

The provider, King Construction owner, made it clear from the beginning, that he was not happy to fulfill my order, that he handled much bigger jobs than a driveway, but he would come over to give me the estimate because he was obligated. He did that timely. I did a careful review of the deal before I made the purchase. The estimate for the job came back at $3,200. I expected total cost to be slightly more, but not 3 times more. The size of my driveway may warrant, at most, an additional $1,000. I am a senior citizen and do not have income to do this at this time. Please reimburse my bank account for this purchase order; I appreciate your help.

Response from King Construction
I would normally not give a response to a review such as this, but it is important that accurate information be given. For those of you who purchased a "Big Deal" and had it not work you please direct your questions and concerns to Angie's List directly and more importantly read the fine print. I'm not sure what gave [member name] the impression I was not interested as I visited her house the very next day after speaking with her. The bottom line is that her driveway was 410 square feet and had a tremendous tree root system under it that was going to require additional work to remove as well as needing to bring in dirt to fill the void that would be left. Further, there are maximum amounts that container companies will haul when removing concrete and each truck is an additional cost. I regret that the big deal did not work out for some of you, and I'm not sure what the College of Charleston is doing employing senior citizens, but please have your facts straight before sitting down at your keyboard.

Please take the time to read my experience before hiring King Construction. Originally was supposed to start the job on 1/6/14, which got moved to 1/8 then rescheduled for 1/9 around noon. I had no problem with this as I understand that things come up in this business and things get delayed. They showed up on 1/9 after 4pm, with no call/text/email letting me know that they were going to be that late. I wasn't home because I informed him that I had to take my wife to the airport at 3:30pm. His guys worked for 2 hours and left. They came back the following day on 1/10 only about an hour later than estimated and finished the work needed to prepare for electrical work and granite installation (completed by Eugene's Granite, highly recommended). Check of $1450 was given to Trey. Trey texted me the night of 1/9 and said, "Electrician will be there around noon. I'll touch base tomorrow when I have a more accurate time." The next day came around and I had not heard a word from Trey. The electrician shows up at 3pm with no heads up. Luckily I was home. What was expected to be a 30 minute job took 4 hours. It was done right so I was happy with the service, but NOT THE COMMUNICATION. Granite is installed on 21st and I contact Trey to have the drywall guy come out on the 22nd. The drywall guy shows up only 25 minutes late this time (I'm fine with 25 minutes late, not 3-4 hours). The drywall guy comes in and looks at the job and goes to Lowe's (5 minutes away) to get supplies (1 sheet of drywall, mud, and corner bead. He is gone for 2 hours. I call Trey and he says "Yea, he called me a while ago and said something came up and he will be back tomorrow." I told him politely "don't bother, I will find someone else to do the job." He says "No problem" and immediately hangs up on me. Very professional Trey. The best part is the next day his drywall guy shows up to "finish the job." Trey's communication is so bad that he didn't even let the guy know not to come back. Trey I don't know how you stay in business. You need to work on you communication skills. Maybe you can use all that money I gave you to take a class on bussiness/communication skills.

I would encourage anyone reading this speech to not only read my reviews but also read the reviews left by this particular member over his time at Angie's List. You can't please everyone. On a positive note I would like to thank Mr Scheidler for solidifying something that I have been struggling with in an attempt to make the client happy. I will no longer be entering in to a contract with a client that thinks he or she would like to play contractor. That includes scheduling, hiring of sub-contractors, etc. I offer a full service, comprehensive, turnkey approach to my profession and will only be offering my services as such in the future. Thanks for the feedback Michael.

The project went great. We were very pleased with the service that King Construction provided for us. My husband and I are both in our 60's and the attic ladder going into our attic was over 35 years old and was in need of being replaced. I call Mr. King on Wednesday afternoon, he returned my call Thursday morning, He sent someone out Friday morning to give us an estimated. Mr. King set up our installation for Saturday afternoon. They arrived with the new attic ladder and in an hour and a half our new attic ladder was installed. The installers were knowledgeable and very pleasant to be around. They knew what they were doing and we are very satisfied with the work. We will call on them again when the need arises. Thank you for a great job.

Mr. King was courteous and professional but he was unable to complete any part of this job without a lot of added expense that he would have to pass on to me. Although I felt my deal should have been doable with the location of my job, he was unable to fulfill within the price of the deal or even slightly over. He was clear that he could not lose money because he would be subcontracting out the job and not doing it himself. After several conversations and emails, we mutually agreed that I would not be able the pursue this work close to the contract price and all work would be best put off to a future date when my finances would allow. Mr. King seems like a very competent contractor and comes highly recommended on several contracting projects. I will keep him in mind for any future projects. This particular project is a no for me. My grade is a B and not an A due to not able to do job close to advertised contract price.

Our experience with King Construction, LLC, was excellent in all regards. Mr. King returned our initial phone call within a matter of hours. He and his masonry supervisor met with us the next day. They gave us a cogent and credible worst-case scenario for what structural problems we would find and how they would proceed to repair it. They provided a detailed work scope and estimate within two days (including having backtracked to find the original brick supplier and confirm availability of materials). Their estimate was not the lowest, but it was the most credible and offered a maximum worst-case limit. We accepted the estimate. Work was started on time and was completed on schedule. The work crew was on time every scheduled work day, worked extremely hard and effectively, and were very careful about not damaging brickwork that was not in scope and general care in maintaining cleanliness of the work site. The masonry supervisor visited the work site daily and Mr. King visited very frequently. When we requested a last minute change to the brick landing pattern, agreement was reached within and hour, the plan was modified and work proceeded in a timely manner with no additional change cost. We highly recommend King Construction, LLC, for major construction projects ? from repairs and renovations to original home construction. We were extremely pleased with the entire project and association with the team. Steve Johnson Charleston, SC 29466 PS - if in the Charleston area and would like more details, please feel free contact me (843-849-9103).
Description of Work: King Construction, LLC Charleston, SC 29466 Extraordinary service and quality at a very reasonable price! Our experience with King Construction, LLC, was excellent in all regards. We hired King Construction, LLC. to evaluate and repair a structural settling defect on the brick stairwell landing on the front elevation of our home. Upon original inspection it was evident that whatever attempts to create a suitable substrate foundation for the brickwork had failed because the landing area (7' x 5' approximately) was completely separated from the steps above and the result was an unsafe entry to the home. King Construction demolished the stair system and excavated all of the affected landing brickwork to expose the substrate and address the issue. There were several issues that collectively contributed to the problem and are listed below: 1. The supporting block/brickwork was not placed in mortar. These are all of the materials underneath the stair system that are what supports the stairs and are placed on a foundation slab (the foundation slab is a slab of concrete used to support brickwork above) . When the foundation slab sank all of the loose materials essentially fell apart and provided no further support. 2. There was no flashing of any kind coming from the wooden porch framing above to divert rain away from the compacted dirt below the foundation bed. This actually compacted the dirt over time and caused the foundation slab to fail. 3. There was no vertical re-bar installed in the tower (tower is the blockwork around and on top of which the brick veneer is installed) blockwork nor was there a bond beam installed in the top course. If the foundation slab was in any way poured to bond with the blockwork there would have been no issue whatsoever. After all excavation was done King, LLC, filled the top course of block with concrete, installed 12" dowels coming out of the blockwork, created a turned down monolithic foundation and constructed a 12" square re-bar cage and poured a six inch thick concrete foundation for the bricks to rest on. There was no way that the original construction method could have possibly been expected to last any length of time and was a fine example of how construction should not be done. Now it will probably last far longer than the rest of the home. We highly recommend King Construction, LLC, for major construction projects – from repairs and renovations to original home construction. We were extremely pleased with the entire project and association with the team.

They did return my call, and I made an appointment with them. Then, we had a day of rain before that and he called me trying to get in. I told him that I had too many people coming in already. When we got to his appointment, he did not show up and did not call. He told me to begin with that he would be given free rein basically. He would decide what was to be done and what was not to be done that I would have no say. That would not work. So, I did not like his manner to begin with. UPDATE: Trey King called March 7, 10:20 AM. He had read the negative review that we put up. He says that I never answered the phone, and he was upset that I had no answering machine. He claimed he never had an appointment with me, though he did. He cussed me out for about ten minutes. I told him that I put the first review up because he was unprofessional. From my background, I dealt with contractors on a daily basis and I know what professional conduct is. During his cuss-out call, I never raised my voice, I didn?t let myself get flustered. However, I told him that I had done the review due to his unprofessional behavior, which he was now repeating. He slammed the phone down hanging up.

Response from King Construction
First of all, we appreciate all of our feedback on Angie’s List; however we were shocked to see this recent review from a member whose husband contacted us for an estimate. First of all, I approach all of my appointments with all of my customers with the utmost professionalism, regarding punctuality, conduct, and behavior. Let me clarify that we NEVER had any appointment set nor did I ever use any profanity or certainly insult him with cuss words. Instead, I initially explained to him over the phone that in order to do the job he was requesting both correctly and efficiently, we would have to go from the ground up on his bathroom remodel. This is not an upsell….this is the RIGHT way to do the job. He didn’t like what I had to say and therefore produced this review which is lacking in truth. For a more accurate picture of our work, please see all of our other reviews.

Overall the experience I had working with Trey was excellent. He called me back almost immediately the first time I contacted him, and he was instantly ready to get started on the job. Trey stayed in contact with me (or my father who helping out at the house) every single workday to let us know how things were progressing. Trey uses very professional, trustworthy subcontractors. I left them in my house for several weeks without worrying about a thing. In fact, one time they were worried about leaving the house key under the mat (where I had been leaving it for them) because someone was outside watching, so they secured it in a different place. Additionally, Trey happened to be at my house on the last day of work as I pulled up. I went inside to find that the air conditioning was not working. Even though he was completely done with the job, Trey stayed and tried to help me figure out what the problem was. He then called his HVAC contact for assistance. I ended up using them (from Trey's recommendation), and they came out first thing the next morning. They were incredibly fair and didn't "take me for a ride" even though they clearly could have. What I thought was going to end up being an entire new HVAC system only cost me $300. The work itself was incredibly professional and well-done. Trey is definitely a perfectionist. My father (who dealt with Trey more than I did as I was at work most of the time), couldn't say enough good things about him. He was extremely impressed. We are having Trey draw up an estimate for further work on a detached garage at the same house.

I was referred by a friend who had hired this company about 6 months to a year ago. Living in a hurricane prone area, this is not my first time dealing with construction companies and the frustration that tends to accompany such projects. I contacted the owner, Trey, who came to meet me the next afternoon. He was helpful in identifying the pros and cons of a couple of sets of ideas I had for the project including some key points I didn't recognize that helped manage costs and improve the look. Within a few days, I was presented with a competitive estimate and agreed to the contract. Throughout the project, I found Trey to be very responsive to my questions and appreciated his communication of the progress and what I could expect. I found them to be reliable to be there at the appointed times. The project was completed in a timely manner and they followed up several times to ensure that I was satisfied with the results.
