Whitmore Plumbing

I typically don't like posting bad reviews, but I feel like this review is warranted as a warning. I'm an active duty military member who owns my home in Beaufort, SC. Since I am active duty I rent my home and do not live in South Carolina. My tenants brought to my attention that their water bill was high, noting that the toilets were running (seal was old) so I hired Whitmore Plumbing to inspect the issue. Whitmore came out, didn't even fix the toilet, went around the yard and then had their secretary (who was nice) contact me and say it was a slab leak. They then gave me a quote for repiping the whole house (attached) for $7,200. At no time did the plumber who did the inspection call me and talk to me about this. It took them over a week to provide a quote. Having done major remodeling on houses before and working with some good, and not so good, contractors, I clearly saw that there was something dishonest going on. I contacted another Plumber (will not name them here) and sent them out to inspect. They fixed the toilets, found the leak in the yard (not under a slab) and fixed it all - for under $400. So here is why I am giving a one-star review. Even with a misdiagnosis I wouldn't give that bad of a review; however, Whitmore Plumbing was very dishonest (if not fraudulent) in their dealings with me. First, the tenants had proof (using dye) that the toilets had a major leak. The plumbers who came out completely ignored that. Second, they didn't even try to discover any of the lines that ran from the water meter (out near the main road) to the house. I didn't really let on that I knew a bit about how plumbing and water lines work (this is one way to check if a contractor is being honest or trying to rip you off) and called them one last time just to give them a chance to explain why they needed to run all brand new pipes from the street, to my house, and throughout my whole house for $7200. Keep in mind that my tenants would have been without water for days, I would have also had to pay another $3000-$4000 to fix the drywall, paint, concrete slab, etc. At no point did the plumber actually call me to discuss the issue, I had to talk to the secretary that had nothing going on. So with all this being said, take a look at the proposal they gave me. Now, take a look at the pictures of the issue, all we had to do was replace the broken connection. I try to treat people with honesty and respect, clearly this is not the Whitmore Plumbing way. I feel obligated to post this because if this was a new owner, or someone who was not that knowledgeable, then they may have paid the $7200 - keep in mind total expenses would be over $10,000 and that would not even include the time and headache this would cause! TD;DL: I feel like Whitmore was trying to take advantage of me since I am active duty, out of town, unable to come down to the property, so they thought they could make some money by me paying $7200 instead of fixing the actual problem that only cost under $400.

From the very beginning Whitmore Plumbing was very responsive. They returned calls, provided estimates, and performed the work all within 2 weeks. Every aspect of the job was explained to us and they did everything they stated, including calling the water department regarding an issue with our meter. We are very happy and will use them again when we are ready to install our tankless water heater!

I've done business with them for over 25 years. They're always in and out, and always courteous. Every time they come out to do work, the job is always very affordable. They always do a good job, and I would never use anyone else.
