LINDA B.
Feb 2012
our worst experience in over 20 years of home ownership. This company and its owner were deceitful, and unreliable. The quality of work was terrible.
They contracted to wash our roof but only did the parts visible from the street thereby skipping half the job.
They failed to paint the dormers. They failed to paint gables. They skipped sections of the walls. They painted over cracked peeling paint. They painted over rotten wood. They skipped sections of the fascia and soffit trim. They used a roller but did not "cut in" with a brush next to the trim. They showed up late every day, never appearing before 11:00 a.m. They quoted the job to be finished in 1 week. It took 7 weeks. They destroyed over $500 of trees and shrubs.
Though Mr. Mance, the owner of the contracting business, promised that he would work every successive good weather day when he began. However, he skipped several days, several different times--usually without any notice or any follow up phone call. He promised several different days to appear and then did not show up.
The terms of the contract called for approx 1/3 down and the balance upon completion. Every single week, the owner, Jimmy Mance tried to beg, intimidate, and otherwise convince us to pay more early, before completion. In the middle of the work, he also threatened at one point, "if you don't pay me more today, I don't know when I will be back to finish this work."
Mr. Mance substituted inferior materials against the terms of the contract. He used interior glue to install stone veneer even though the manufacturers instructions clearly specified an exterior glue. He even admitted he did this because the proper glue was "way too expensive." He showed up without tools and borrowed my tools to do several of the repairs. He also "borrowed" hardware from me since he "forgot to pick up the nails and screws." He repeatedly asked me to go to the store for supplies, "so me and my guys can keep working."
I had to constantly point out defects and missed portions of the work. And, I had to double check on several items Mr. Mance promised to correct.
They left trash in our yard during the weeks during the job. At the end, Mr. Mance told me he had "cleaned up everything real good." After he left, I found a large pile of trash consisting of boxes, empty paint containers, old paint brushes, and old wood hidden behind behind our storage shed.
