As a painter and someone who works with trim, he is excellent. As a foreman on a job, he becomes too distracted and things are over looked. There was a lot of physical labor his employees did in order to make room for them to work (moved my belonging outdoors and covered them with tarps to keep them from the weather). Mr. Coyle was very particular on the woodwork trim around the doors, floors, and windows. He was also very good about working within my budget. Mistakes he should have found and repaired without my finding them: 1) The cold air return was plastered over and one of the electrical outlets in one room. A smoke detector was plastered over. I addressed the issue of the return and the smoke detector and they were fixed. I didn't realize the electric outlet was plastered over until a few months later when I was moving furniture and went to plug in something realizing the socket was not there. When the work was started, I did inform him that the outlets/switches were loose after so many years of just hanging and they needed to be adjusted and stapled or nailed in place. Almost every one of them was fixed in place level with the 2x4s instead of ¼? past the 2x4x so that they would be even with the wall board. Now, the face plates that were put in place are cracked because the power source is inside the boxes and not level with the wall board. 2) The shower leaks through to the floor below. He and I went round and round about the shower quite a few times when he was here. I finally asked if he had put caulking on it. He then did do that and it was good for about six months. Then it started leaking again. I was not going to call him on it as we had already done that dance. 3) The roof--needed to be done and it looks good from the street--with gutters. Unfortunately, I did not think to put gutter covers on. . . 4) I asked for no texture in the plaster. One small room and two closets ended up with the sand texture and then he asked if that was all right. I wasn't going to make them do it all over, so I'm living with that. 5) In a heavy storm in June the chimney--in the area above the second floor--looked like it had a waterfall. The water followed the line of the roof plywood onto the electrical wires and down through the light fixture over the stairs. When I emailed him about it (last week) he made it over on the same night that we had light rain. He said he could not see where it had leaked. I was not as pleasant as maybe I should have been, but I was not happy. Water and electricity do not mix. I put him on the defensive, I know that, but I think I have a reason for concern. He left the house saying something to the effect that it might not be his fault (uh, you did the roof, not I) and that he would not come back until my attitude changed. I could email him when my attitude changed. Needless to say, I am having a plumber come in to fix the shower, an electrician come in to do the electrical work, and a person who can assess the chimney and fix it. As I tried to explain to Mr. Coyle, I did not see some of this stuff until much later. With all the extra physical labor he and his employees did moving things, I settled for things I should not have. As time has passed, I have seen things I did not see at the conclusion of the job. I figured I should have been here daily while they were working; my fault that I had to go to work. I assume part of the blame.
