He arrived exactly on time, inspected the floor, and said that he could only determine whether the result I wanted was possible if he picked a section and tried his polishing techniques, which are quite time consuming. I knew a little about tile, and could tell by our conversation that he was both experienced, and knew what he was talking about. We agreed on a price for a finished job, assuming that it was possible to produce the effect I wanted. He worked for over an hour, and to both of our disappointments, when the floor dried after the polishing materials had been rinsed off, it appeared that the problem was not due to deposits, but a breakdown of the tile itself; something that could not have been known at the start of the project. It would require either a complete resurfacing, or replacement, neither of which he was prepared to do. As he had an hour and a half round trip to get here, plus an hour of work, I offered to pay him for his time. I was dumbfounded by his reply. No charge. I have hired many dozens of craftsmen over the years, and this was the first time anyone had ever told me that because he wouldn't be able to produce the result I wanted, through no fault of his own, but faults in old materials, that there would be no charge. This reflects a pride of craftsmanship that is almost unheard of today. I only wish I had other jobs for him to do--I love to see skilled people in action.
Description of Work: I had a 15 year old porcelain tile bathroom floor that had developed a haze. I wasn't sure if it was simply a result of deposits in the water, or an actual deterioration of the material. I wanted to begin the process by getting a good, professional diagnosis. I contacted Mr. Dolan of NEASR and he agreed to give it a thorough test, and only if he felt that it would be possible to meet my objective; have the hazy floor tiles match the wall tiles, would he endeavor to do the work.
