DLD Fence

The owner came to my work office on 5/13/2013 to get a deposit of over half the cost of the job and sign a generic contract. The check was cashed that same day. Written in for work order number was "licensed & insured". At this time, he pointed to a neighbor's (who had since moved) fence and told me he had installed that fence. She stopped by a few weeks later and told me that it wasn't DLD Fence that installed her fence. He told me that he would be to my home to install the fence the following week. I did not get a call, nor hear from him until he finally showed up on May 30th to begin the work. When we got home from work he and his helper had started the project. Some of this fence is on a cliff and is protection against anyone or any animal from falling off of the cliff. At this time, we pointed out that if anyone (especially small children) were to lean against this area of the fence, they would end up falling off the cliff. We made it clear that this was unacceptable as the fence that he replaced did not have this dangerous safety issue. They left our property a mess that evening, but we figured that they would clean it up the next day when they returned to finish the project. The next day they did finish and we didn't have any contact with them as they were gone when we got home from work. Here are some complaints: 1. They had used our garden hose and left it all unrolled and across the patio. A professional company would have their own equipment, or at the very least, returned our equipment to where they had taken it from. 2. They left chunks of concrete near almost every post hole they had filled with concrete, chunks that were big enough to break a window or damage a lawnmower blade. 3. They left concrete spray/splash all over the new siding on my house, the cabana and the pool pump house. 4. The bottom of the fence goes from touching the ground to over 6" spaces from the ground in areas. The day after the work was completed, the owner called me in the morning for the final payment and became very upset when I tried to tell him the issues that we were unhappy with. He told me that I should have told him when he was there what was wrong and, in my opinion, was yelling at me. I was on my way to a funeral at the time and just told him he could come by when my husband got home at 1 pm that day. We waited until 3:25 pm and he didn't call or show. To make a long story short, I paid him in full on 6/3/2013 (under protest). He returned to my house again on or around 6/14/2013 at which time he text messaged me to tell me that I owed him another $150 for putting a bottom rail on the unsafe cliff area, and that he wanted to stop by my office to pick it up. I text messaged him back to say that my husband was out of town until 6/17/13 and that he would have to wait to deal with him. He sent me 2 more text on 6/18/13 about coming to get a payment and to be honest, I ignored him. On 6/18/2013, I received a voice mail from the owner that I felt to be a threat... "...I've left a couple of messages in the past few days and if I don't receive a call back today, I will be at your house tomorrow..." Needless to say, I was a bit frightened and immediately text messaged him back to tell him that his check would be in an envelope taped to the door outside my office. He sent someone to pick it up within minutes. Before they started work, I did check the BBB who list them as an A+ company, but I didn't ask for further references or check the RI Contractor's Registration Board. If I had, I would have found that this company has no insurance (according the the board) and I may have had a chance to see some of his work, which is definitely not even close to being the professional installation I expected. More than anything, I am embarrassed to say that I didn't do my homework on this rather expensive project. I should have done a little more research, and insisted on having an insurance certificate mailed or emailed directly to me from the insurance agency in my name before letting them step foot on my property. I have photos, text messages and the threatening voice mail saved should anyone want to see or hear just how this company will treat you.

They are very good people to work with. I have worked with them in years past. The owners are David and his wife, Dawn. I spent about $2,000 on them, seven months ago. Also, I spent another $2,000 on them, six months ago. In all cases that I dealt with them, they came out when they were supposed them; they were on time; and they cleaned up after themselves. The price was very good; they had the lowest price out of three other companies that I had dealt with. They were also most efficient. Everything worked out the way I wanted. They had called me back within a day. They came out on time. If they cannot make it on time, they will call you 24 hours ahead of time. They will never leave you hanging. When they are working, they keep working. The only time they will stop working is when you have to show them what you want them to do. I will use them again in the future.

THEY WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL AND WERE ABLE TO GET TO THE JOB IN A VERY REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FROM WHEN I FIRST CALLED THEM. THEY STUCK TO THE ESTIMATED PRICE AND TIME FRAME THAT THEY HAD GIVEN ME. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS.
