.What I got was completely unprofessional and unaesthetic, to put it mildly. I could have done it myself! They ran a new electric circuit to the outside wall opposite the fireplace, then ran wire mold around the room, up and over the double doorway to the bedroom, back down to the baseboard, and then up the wall to a surface-mounted outlet box. Not hideous, but unattractive. Ugly came next, when they put a splitter on the existing cable to the room (also on the outside wall), and ran it parallel to the wire mold, securing it with cable staples. When they got to the fireplace wall, they punched a hole in the plaster wall so they could run it inside the wall a big 20" to a wall plate. They simply left the raw hole in the plaster and ran the cable in, with no effort at any sort of finish treatment. I argued with them throughout the process, asking them to consider other pathways, which they could not seem to envision. Basically, they disregarded "the little woman" and did what they d*** well pleased. I balked at accepting the job, but they pointed out that they had done what was agreed, and I was so depressed at that point that I caved and paid up. Should have stopped the job as soon as it turned wrong, of course. Good old 20-20 hindsight! They had to come back and replace the splitter they'd installed, since it was broken and the TV didn't work. Performance was still unsatisfactory, necessitating a call to the cable company to come and replace the junctions yet again. The cable guys expressed very negative opinions of the installation in general. I'm still looking at a ragged hole in my wall and ugly surface wiring. I can't bring myself to paint the room with all that mess to deal with. I dream of making it all go away, and hope I'll have a chance to make that happen, but know it will cost me all over again.
Description of Work: I wanted to mount my flat screen TV over the mantel in the 2nd floor sitting room of my 1846 Victorian. I needed electrical and cable connections installed. Of course, I hoped for a beautiful no-wires-showing installation, but understood that my plaster walls and unusual configuration might present barriers. I pointed out possible pathways for both electric and cable, including the fact that there was electricity to the other side of the fireplace wall, so there was clearly a pathway to the basement nearby; coming down from the attic was also an option. I was given a quote for $1250, with half up front and half on completion. I accepted & gave them a check.

Lost power due to a main circuit breaker failure on a Sunday Night. Only service I could get due to the hour was GEM. They came to the house, charged $150 to walk in the door, then charged me in excess of $500 to diagnose and replace a $50 dollar breaker( entire operation took 30 minutes). While service was prompt and courteous, it was outrageously expensive. Also, about two months later, the same breaker failed again. The new electrician (different company) told me it had failed because the breaker was installed improperly, and was in fact a fire hazard. I will never use this company again.
Description of Work: Diagnosed an electrical problem/ Replaced a main circuit breaker.

They were very prompt, showing up the same day I called. However, they arrived earlier than they had told me they would get there, and only my housekeeper was home. Although her English is great, and she told them what the problems were, they waited half an hour for me to arrive before starting work. One of the problems I had called them for, a non-functioning light in my vent hood, they couldn't even look at because it was part of an appliance, which they aren't allowed to do. They then proceeded to give me an estimate of the cost of the work, and when I had approved it, they went to work. The work was done well and in a timely manner. They cleaned up fairly well, and were very nice and professional, but I felt that the price was outrageous, and that it was ridiculous that they couldn't even look at the broken light in my vent hood. If it had been a smaller company, I'm sure they would have fixed it if they had the parts.
Description of Work: They replaced the doorbells (2) at my home because they were sticking and causing a constant humming sound, and they replaced a fluorescent light fixture in my basement.
