a2z (Rich) is very detailed. He makes sure the job is done right. He looks and drives to make sure the project is done on time and what he quoted you. I found him to be very responsive if I had a question or needed something he called back within minutes.

I had to tackle this project long distance. We live in Virginia and this condo is in Rhode Island. It was a 30 year old bathroom but not one that I was planning on tackling at the moment. However, a leaking shower stall necessitated that we fix it. I was very hesitant about using a contractor long-distance. I located a2z through Angie's List and decided to try them because they had received the "Super Service Award" for several years. The customer attention that a2z Renovations provides was immediately apparent. Rich rearranged his schedule to meet with us when we came to Newport. As our scheduled arrivals in Newport were sporadic, at best, this meant the world to us. While we weren't present during much of the project, we did have a set of "eyes" on the workers. My in-laws also have a condo in the same complex and they were able to see the project from start to finish. My father-in-law, who is a real stickler for details, noted how neat the work site was and how the contractors walled-off with plastic the bathroom from the rest of the condo. Rich was on-site for much of the project. The end-result is gorgeous. The work experience was great. Rich and I were able to communicate easily via e-mail. Perhaps the best recommendation I can give is that I have just signed a contract for a2z to remodel our kitchen area in the condo! You will be happy with both the end-product and the process... Did I mention that we also got a $500. refund on the bathroom? Now that is coming in under budget!!
Description of Work: A full bathroom remodel in our condo in Newport. This included some significant plumbing work as the original plumbing from approximately the 1970's needed major upgrading. The shower stall was completely gutted; the plumbing upgraded and the stall was beautifully tiled and finished off with lovely tile details and shower door. The tiling of the floor was wonderful and the toilet was removed and replaced. The bathroom vanity area proved challenging and a2z came up with fantastic ideas. We wound up with a bathroom that was bigger than we expected when Rich suggested moving a particular small wall. It really opened up the whole room! When I had trouble locating lighting and accessories in polished brass, Rich found them for me and sent me the links on-line. As I was doing the whole project long-distance, this was greatly appreciated. At the end of the project, Rich noticed two small details that I had overlooked and made a suggestion so that the project would have a consistent "finished" look ~ the finished product has the look of a very classy bathroom without an exorbitant price tag. The attention to detail by z2z really made all the difference.

The project went as scheduled. They arrived early, worked steadily and completed the job in the time scheduled. Rich applied his usual attention to detail and standards for quality materials and workmanship. His suggestions and recommendations were beneficial to the outcome of the project and reflected his typical concern for a quality outcome. Update: Rich just dropped by to close out our contract and reported that he had been able to purchase the materials for our deck at less than the initial round of vendor bids that he used to develop our contract price. As a result, he presented us with a check rather than a bill for the contract balance. This was a pleasant surprise, as my wife and I had accepted the original price and were prepared to make our final payment as called for in the contract. Although the rebate check was a surprise, Rich's integrity in his dealings with us was not.
Description of Work: Removed an existing wooden deck. Replaced with a larger AZEK based deck and rail system.

Now that we have had A2Z do several projects for us, we have the kind of working relationship where we communicate via email and text, they show up and do the exterior work, and they bill us afterwards via email. They do high quality work and have expertise in lots of areas. We are very happy with everything they've done and I highly recommend them. The only downside, and it's one that I understand completely, is that when your job is in the "handyman" category it will be lower priority compared to their larger jobs. That said, if you have an emergency (which we did: a leaking roof) they will take care of you quickly. Thanks Rich for all you do!
Description of Work: A2Z has done a number of "handyman" projects for us: * Taking out rotten wooden gutters and bringing in a subcontractor to replace with aluminum * Taking out rotten roof, wall, and window sill boards and rebuilding * Rebuilding small exterior porch steps * Replacing exterior electrical box * and more

Outstanding. Worker was professional, knowledgeable in multiple areas, and completed work from A2Z. Assessed, brought in the right tools, kept me appraised, did the job thoroughly, checked his work, cleaned up, and even helped with extras - above and beyond. Rich really listens to what your needs are, your budget is, and works to find the best fit. When it comes to safety - he knows what has to be done to keep my home and everyone in it safe.
Description of Work: Various Handyman items: 1. Assessed problem with kitchen sink. (garbage disposal broken) 2. Change out bathroom light switch (one of three switches broken) 3. Installed two new smoke/CO detectors, one in the hall and one in the living room, and moved the old one to a joist in the basement. One in that area was not appropriate to bldg code, it now is. 4. Assess, adjust and repair bathroom sink plumbing (goes from a flimsy plastic 1 1/4" drain to 1 1/2" pipes and was missing several of the gaskets to threaded joints.) 5. Replaced all the screens except 2 in basement. 6. Changed out both storm doors as agreed. 7. Carry an AC unit downstairs, the AC was rigged to be permanent requiring greater effort to remove and then repair frame)

Excellent job for multiple reasons. Rich knew the all the proper required distances from property lines, assessed the pitch of the yard, access, and helped choose the right location for the new structure. He supervised the work, ensuring proper depth of concrete forms, sub materials, rebar and perfect level was achieved. Pitch of the land was challenging. He followed up as the concrete set and made sure the job and clean-up was complete.

Richard, the owner of A2Z, is professional and conscientious and responds to calls and emails promptly. Although, he used a subcontractor, he was deeply involved with the progress of the project and readily available for problems and concerns. The project was billed on a materials and hourly labor basis because it entailed potentially unforeseeable problems associated with demolishing the existing deck, repairing water and structural damage, sealing against further water intrusion, and preventing further deterioration. The home is waterfront, sitting less than 50 feet from the water's edge and subject to severe weather from all sides. Additional planning was required to properly support the hot tub, which sits on the deck. The deck had not been properly supported by the previous contractor and there was evidence of sagging. The crew arrived on schedule and worked hard the entire day without the down time I've experienced elsewhere. They were courteous and patient, answering my many questions and addressing any concerns. It was very hot and yet they expressed only positive comments about it being the nature of their type of work. No complaining on this crew! They took great care removing the existing deck railings and clear acrylic panels and storing them for later use. Patiently, they tried to assist us in removing the existing deck boards, which we sought to save for another project, but, which were unusable for this project. They sawed/grinded away the huge (approximately 18" wide by 4" deep), deteriorating PSL beams used in cantilevering the deck, placed appropriate sealing/flashing material to protect against water intrusion, capped the piers with aluminum and additional flashing, rebuilt the deck (spacing the joists 12" on center to prevent sagging/bounce associated with the use of PVC decking), and replaced railings and disturbed siding. The project also entailed installing new columns to support the deck now that the cantilevering was removed. They made every effort to reuse material when feasible to save me money. Richard strives to provide high quality services at a fair price. He billed me thousands of dollars less on this project than his original estimate, because it went smoothly. I highly recommend and I will be using A2Z in the future.
Description of Work: A2Z has performed work for me before, flashing correctly windows and glass sliders that the original builder of my relatively new home (2010) had done incorrectly. Most recently, he demolished approximately 500 square feet of deck on that same new home that had to be replaced because the wrong type of beam was used to cantilever the deck and they were deteriorating rapidly.

I was looking for an electrician and called Rich for a referral. I trust Rich's judgement and I can always rely on him to get back to me asap, which he did. Unlike most other electricians or handymen in general who take several days to respond to your calls, Rich gets back to me THE SAME DAY. And I appreciate that. He emailed me the contact info of his electrician whom I was in touch with quickly. He needed an access to the attic which Rich came in and took care of quickly and efficiently. He shows up on time and works great with the tenants. Thanks for being so reliable, Rich!

We have had Rich B. and A2Z do several significant renovations, interior and exterior, to an 85 year old house that had had very little upkeep. It is a pleasure to recommend him as skilled, professional, straight-talking and very capable and responsive. This year he replaced an aging deck, which involved new footings, dealing with the filling of two septic tanks under the deck - one of which we didn’t even know existed! - and following our requests and specifications while offering advice and alternatives on both design and materials along the way. If there is a problem later, Rich comes soon and remedies it, but this has been a minor issue. He also re-cedar shingled the exterior and replaced several windows. From our first project three years ago we have felt complete trust in him and his employees. We have been very pleased and satisfied with his workmanship, responsiveness, advice and business manner for three years of projects and will definitely consult with him about any future issues.

First, I called A2Z and request for them to come by and look at my siding and yard mess. Rich returned my call within days and listen to my list of work I needed done. He asked all the right questions, reassuring me he understood and could take care of this without any problem. Just to get a real idea of the property, A2Z came by. I was thrilled that they were willing to come by the next morning at 7:15AM to accommodate me and my work hours. Steve walked around the property with me. He was very professional. He didn't waste my time. He was done within 15 minutes. He took my thoughts back to Rich, who was at my house working within days. I was so thrilled to see the yard completely cleaned and the siding repaired without complications. I was afraid the siding was not going to fit back in and new siding would have to be purchased. Matching the color was a concern, as well. Looking at it, I couldn't even see where the damage was. It looked great. Rich and Steve were done within 3 hrs. I now have my yard back, though now I have more to mow. I have also asked A2Z for an estimate for rebuilding my deck. I feel very confident it will be done professional and within my budget. I highly recommend A2Z Renovations, Portsmouth RI.

Have asked Angies List to have this report removed on 8-12-13 . . . Have no idea who this is or why they targeted us in such a manner. Aside from the very limited feedback and "C" grades the biggest clue for us was the $300 cost for a full day, broken down that comes out to $37.50 per hour . . . No legal company, with the costs of business, could stay afloat with such a low labor rate. This individual has mistaken us for someone else.

Rich said he wanted our project to be one of the benchmarks of his business. He priced the project under all of our other estimates. We looked at a few of his other projects, and unfortunately we listened to his reasoning for leaving his corporate job. He said it was for family reasons and that he was traveling too much. He said he made his decision while working for GE in the UK. We felt his family values were in the right place. But then we were surprised as to how he was billing us for his workers. He was billing us at over $40/hr.and I later discovered that he was paying them less than half that price. I understand administrative costs, etc., since in the corporate field, but this was extreme. Also, he assumed that her could proceed with phase two of the project before phase one was done, and I immediately recognized that he was manipulating the work to fit his financial needs, rather than satisfy our requirements for quality work. We immediately confronted him on some of the details of his first phase, and he attempted to talk his way out of it. He did a lot of his own electrical and plumbing work to "save us money," but we had to hire independent contractors to correct his mistakes. Consequently, a project that should have taken 1-2 years and cost about $130,000 has gone on for 5 years and will end up costing $190,000. Fortunately, we have gone with a quality contractor that really knows what he is doing.
Description of Work: Rich covered the home with vinyl siding, replaced all windows and doors with new construction top of the line products. He also moved the front door to the middle of the house; installed a sliding door to our deck; and installed a temporary rough bathroom in the basement while upstairs bathroom was being gutted. He was supposed handle the construction of the addition to the side of the house, but we had to cancel due to his over pricing and our disappointment in his fast talking approach tgo the project.

First of all we will not talk any negativity or ill will regarding this client from 2008 . . . they are very nice people, easy to deal with and a true asset to our home town of Bristol, RI . . . not to mention a great soccer player son with high expectations. When we go back on our detailed project notes and recollection, we offer the following in proper order of their report: 1. Very glad to read that they have no negative reflection on the actual New Construction Pella Windows and doors we installed. 2. Very glad to read that they have no negative reflection on the Foundry Shaker Style vinyl siding we installed. 3. Very glad to read that they have no negative reflection on the temporary bathroom in basement. 4. Regarding a2z not being awarded the addition because we were too high in price, we at a2z understand that our pricing does not work for everyone. Our pricing levels are such because we must maintain certain financial percentages to run a professional construction business. But it is our recollection and documented in notes, that the husband did not get a particular job he was interviewing for, and was not bringing in a steady income, so with his wife being the only one working, they could just not afford to do the project. They talked about getting money from parents and/or loan from a financial institution . . . but it never came to fruition. 5. All of our projects are treated as bench mark projects . . . we do our best to cater specifically to all of our clients. 6. Our family values are and have always been true . . . please don’t mock or cast stones on our value . . . that might show poor judgment to many. 7. Whether we charge an hourly rate of $40 or $100 and pay employees minimum wage to $100 per hour . . . that is all irrelevant . . . we are breaking no laws or mistreating employees . . . what matters is the agreement with the client, which we honored and followed. Construction has one of the highest workman’s comp rate in all industries . . . back in 2008 it was 18% . . . reflect on the other direct and indirect expenses, a $40 per hour bill rate is absurdly low by any accountants suggestions. 8. Suggesting that we did our own electrical and plumbing work, suggests we broke the law . . . the licensed electrician on the project was Montey Electric and the Plumber was KANS Plumbing . . . Both were under contract and paid against the project with proper inspections. a2z employees might have turned off breakers during certain phases, but we are a class act and use licensed and insured professionals ALWAYS. 9. The project may have taken 5 years, but we were there in 2008 only . . . and have NO reflection on how long it takes someone else to finish what has nothing to do with us . . . same point on the costs, we have no control over what others charge. 10. Quality contractor . . . very glad to read this . . . there are many quality contractors and we are happy the client found someone that can meet their financial expectations. 11. Would have been nice for them to include the fact that in 2010, they reached out to us that the, “temporary” bathroom toilet had failed and that we should honor fixing it even though the 1 year warranty was long over . . . when I personally, went over to take a look at the situation . . . I took everything apart, got sick 2 times as the macerator tank was filled with human waste . . . observed that the macerator pump was wrapped with a sneaker lace . . . after showing them, fixing it and putting it back to proper working order . . . they politely said, “oops, sorry our mistake, must have fell in when doing laundry.” 12. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that due to a2z Renovations research . . . a fence they wanted to install would become an issue as the neighbors current fence was on their property . . . thereby proving that they had more land than they anticipated 13. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that due to our in town contacts we were able to help their son get a summer job that year 14. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that we were able to send at least 3 clients to the husband for his psychiatric consultation business 15. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that when they dropped a certain item into their pool, we were able to fish it out before it got damaged 16. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that the used hot tub they procured, was broken and we were able to repair it to working condition, even though their “hot tub” professional said it was not possible 17. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that we took their dog in and out several times throughout the project for them to do his business 18. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that we helped them unload many, many fence pieces in their yard and cover it with our tarps so it would not get dirty/damaged 19. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that we continuously covered their floor, furniture etc. even though they continuously said it was not necessary 20. It would have also been nice, for them to observe that when they locked their keys in the car, we helped them open the door as the house keys were in the car as well In summation, we trust the client may have been holding this in quite some time . . . now that 5+ years have passed . . . we will make every effort to personally reach out to them and understand their perspective. Cordially, Rich Bonvegna owner of a2z Renovations

a2z came as soon as I called, gave me advice on how to replace them as inexpensively as possible, and I followed Rich's advice. I ordered the exact door frames from the reference # he showed me. One of his crew came to replace all the hardware, etc. So, what could have cost up to $700, cost half that. And, of course, a2z is always on time, on budget, and a pleasure to work with.

My husband and I recently purchased a condo in an old Victorian house needing quite a bit of exterior work. This is a second home, so we are not there during the winter to oversee projects. I contacted Richard to get a quote for replacing the cedar shingles on the exterior of the house. Richard was quick to respond to my initial inquiry and scheduled an appointment to visit the property in my absence. He was helpful in explaining the strict mandates contractors have to follow to remove lead paint, which was a big contributing factor to the cost of the project. When the other owners are ready to move forward with this project or any others, I will definitely contact Richard to work with us.

Rich communicates via email which is unusual for a contractor, in my experience. It makes scheduling and communication really easy. He responds quickly and keeps to his word. He arrived for the job on time and completed the work in a professional way -- going above and beyond by re-attaching some loose laminate, patching up a few holes, and restarting the clock on the stove. The little things really do make a difference. Thanks Rich -- looking forward to working with you again in the future.
Description of Work: We found A2Z Renovations here on Angies list and chose them for their A rating. Rich from A2Z was a pleasure to deal with. He replaced an old stove hood with a new one we had purchased. He wired it and hooked it up to the vent. He also flashed the vent to prevent future water leaks.

I contracted a2z Renovations to perform an all-points inspection of a new property that I was interested in purchased. Rich was extremely thorough and professional during the inspection, and in addition to providing me with the list of items that would need to be repaired/replaced he additionally provided an excellent amount of detail about the hows and whys of each item that was an issue, which was very helpful to someone like me who has very limited knowledge of home construction.

I called Rich, he scheduled a time to come out and inspect shortly after. Integrity A+, Communication A+, Craftsmanship A+. Its so comforting to know you can call a company and they will do the job and take pride in their work. Your get what you pay for and a better job usually means more time. You can have the job done Right , Quick or Cheap. Pick two, you can't have all three. I just want it done right.
Description of Work: Rich and his crew installed a new roof on my home approximately two years ago. During a recent rain and high wind storm a leak occurred. I live out of state and the home is a rental. When I got a call about a leak I was surprised, it was a new roof, one which I had carefully watched being installed. I called Rich and he quickly scheduled an inspection. After looking in the attic and on top of the roof he said there were no obvious holes or damage that would have caused a leak. A short time later when I came to town I checked both attic and roof as well. It was determined that the strong wind drove the water under the shingles at just the right angle and for a long enough time to allow water to come in. I don't believe it was caused by improper installation, the guys did a great job. I tend to be a perfectionist and watched their job as it progressed and the install was done properly, right down to the exact manufacturers specifications. Honestly, I've found most trades in the area to be lackluster to begin with and thats me saying it nicely. I normally will try to use referrals on everything. A2Z is a company you can TRUST. While not the inexpensive bid, the attention to detail Rich pays to his projects, the communication and service he renders is priceless! You get what you pay for. I doubt most contractors would have stepped up to the plate to address a potential problem as quickly as Rich did!

Response from A2Z Renovations LLC
While RI law states that a warranty period is 1 year from day of project complete, it is in the best interest of anyone who is serious about maintain longevity in business to at minimum understand any situations even after the year is up. If not for good customer standings then at least to better the process for future similar projects. When the customer reached out to me over 2 years ago in reference to his roof, being a designer, he did not like the common practice of making low pitched roofs protected by rubber membranes . . . rather he wanted architectural roof shingles that he procured from Lowes . . . so our next suggestion was to reduce the exposure to weather on the low pitched roof from standard to 3-1/2 inches making it a tighter fit . . . however that was also not appealing to the customer. No worries, our final alternative was to cover the whole exposed sheathing with ice and water membrane and install the shingles at regular exposure . . . doing so required prior approval from Building Official which was received when the customer approached him with our suggestion. So when the customer called me and suggested that the roof was leaking, I was puzzled and did a quick investigation . . . after much back and forth brainstorming . . . we finally deduced that the roof did not appear to be leaking as the signs were just not there. Our final and current conclusion was heat coming from the room below up through the gaps in insulation and forming condensation on the tips of the roof nails, especially during rain storms when the moisture in the air is high . . . great news was that the rafters were dry . . . since the soffits are not properly ventilated due to the style of the home, the ridge vent alone cannot do it’s full job. The customer was going to install a fan and try and get the air to circulate out while we continued to monitor towards progress, hoping this would eliminate the condensation. The customer's persistence and accommodating personality is exactly what we look for in a client . . . we can’t all be perfect in this world, but together we can all strive to be better. Rich (a2z Owner)
