This is a response to Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s allegations. I, Steve Kauffman, called Mr. [Member Name Removed] regarding his problem, but at the time of this posting Mr. [Member Name Removed] has not returned the call. Here is the history. When Shiloh Roofing was originally contacted by Mr. [Member Name Removed] in May, 2014 for an estimate to discuss his needs, an appointment was scheduled for May 7, 2014 at 9am. I personally went out and physically accessed the problem. Mr. [Member Name Removed] was told at that time that the roof now in question was much deteriorated and should be replaced. Mr. [Member Name Removed] requested prices for replacement and repair; replacement and repair for all the roofing areas of his home, along with a window replacement. A Proposal was submitted to Mr. [Member Name Removed] on May 15, 2014 with options to repair or replace, with replacement being the recommended option, because of the age and condition of the roof. This roofing was probably installed prior to the 1950's. This roof was rusted through and we have pictures on file to show the rust and deterioration. Against the explanation and suggestion of a professional roofer, Mr. [Member Name Removed] chose the repair. Shiloh Roofing stands behind our workmanship, but what Mr. [Member Name Removed] posted here on Angie's List is not a workmanship issue; this is a very old deteriorated roof that had a temporary fix. The temporary fix lasted 3-years and 2-weeks (per the customer), which in reality, isn't a bad thing since the roof should have been replaced in 2014. I do my best to work within the customer's budget, so problems can be fixed. This is the situation here. Mr. [Member Name Removed] was presented with the facts about all his roofs, he was given options, and he chose what he wanted to do. The Contractor, in this case Shiloh Roofing, can't be held responsible for the choice of a customer. Shiloh Roofing doesn't make the choice for the customer. We can only make our professional assessment, present the facts, and make a recommendation. At this same time, Mr. [Member Name Removed] did approve the reroofing of the rear mansard and the installation of 1-new window. These 2-installs (the rear mansard roof and the window) fall under our Workmanship Warranty, but these are not the issue at hand. The current problem is the rear second floor roof. As stated above, this roof was much deteriorated in 2014; now with another 3+ years of age, it is no wonder Mr. [Member Name Removed] is having problems. Roofs do not last forever. There are some roofs that have a longer life expectancy than others, but none last forever. We provide Workmanship Warranties for all new installs and Manufacturer Warranties for the products. It is idealistic to think a Contractor would provide a warranty for a deteriorated roof that was installed by another Contractor. As for the "F" given for Punctuality and Responsiveness, I would like to submit for the public view the timeline of how this played out. As stated above, the initial contact with Mr. [Member Name Removed] was at an onsite appointment on May 7, 2014. A formal Proposal was submitted to Mr. [Member Name Removed] on May 15, 2014, the Proposal was accepted by Mr. [Member Name Removed] on May 29, 2014. A Contractual agreement was drawn up and submitted to Mr. [Member Name Removed] on June 6, 2014 and it was accepted & returned on June 23, 2014. Since this work was in the City of York, a permit was required and the Contractor applied for the permit. The permit was issued and the work began on July 10, 2014 and completed on July 14, 2014. The job was inspected by the lead Foreman and the invoice was processed. When Mr. [Member Name Removed] paid the invoice, he provided positive input through a Customer Questionnaire and he made no negative comments. The comments were the employees were courteous and polite, the employees respected their property and took measures to protect their yard, the employees used proper language and behaved appropriately in a residential area, he stated he would recommend Shiloh Roofing to others, he stated the crew was fast, hardworking, extremely respectful and left the jobsite spotless, and he was happy with the results. If you follow the timeline, from the time Mr. [Member Name Removed] entered into the Contractual agreement with Shiloh Roofing on June 23, 2014, a permit was requested & approved, and the time the work began on July 10, 2014 is about 17 days (or 2 weeks and 3 days). Mr. [Member Name Removed] did not complain about the Punctuality and Responsiveness at that time. As part of our follow-up, Mr. [Member Name Removed] was sent a letter on April 3, 2017 from Shiloh Roofing stating the coating he had done in 2014 was a short term fix and suggested he consider replacing the 2nd and 3rd floor roof decks in the Spring of 2017. The letter was never returned as undeliverable, so I can only assume Mr. [Member Name Removed] received the letter. The next time I heard from Mr. [Member Name Removed] was on Sunday July 23, 1027. Our office is closed on Sunday, so his call was received and returned on Monday July 24, 2017. Two employees were sent to Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s property on Monday July 31, 2017 and accessed the problem. The pictures indicate rusted through roofing and deteriorated spouting. There was no charge for this service call, even though the problem Mr. [Member Name Removed] is experiencing is a roof issue on a non-warranted roof. In response to Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s comment about employing someone on work release, I'd like to publish why this was the case. We do give individuals second chances, if they are deserving of a second chance. Over the years, we have had an employee who was paying a consequence for a mistake he made. The mistake wasn't murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, arms offense or child molestation. The offence was a misdemeanor. This employee, as with all our employees, was background checked, drug tested, etc. We take many precautions to ensure the safety of our customers and staff. We are in business since 1957 and realize the seriousness of our choices if we cut corners or make unwise decisions. Shiloh Roofing would not jeopardize our 60+ years of being in business by carelessly hiring a felon or other potentially dangerous person. Mr. [Member Name Removed] gave our Price a "D". No one pressured Mr. [Member Name Removed] to choose Shiloh Roofing. He made that choice of his own free will. Furthermore, Mr. [Member Name Removed] indicated he contacted Shiloh Roofing because we were referred to him. At no time are potential customers discouraged from getting other estimates. In fact, we encourage folks to get more than 1-estimate. It is unfortunate Mr. [Member Name Removed] is experiencing the problem in his attic and bathroom, but to blame Shiloh Roofing for his decision to repair this roof in 2014 rather than replace it isn't justified. All the documentation mentioned in this response is on file at the Office location of Shiloh Roofing.
