Description of Work: Ron Anderson and his employees were all fantastic, and one of the hardest working crews that we've had. (We're slowly renovating an four-square home). When Ron first came to do the estimate, he actually climbed out our 3rd story window and went out onto the roof and took pictures with his phone of all four of our chimneys. He then proceeded to explain to me what the individual issues were with each chimney and how he proposed to repair them. Not only was he and his crew efficient and industrious, but he also alerted us to a roofing problem from previous contractors which would need to be addressed. I would highly recommend!

Description of Work: I am looking for someone to repair my chimney. I found Anderson Chimneys on Angie's List. I used the Angie's list scheduling portion to contact him. After a couple of days I got an email asking me to call. I called, left a message, and never heard back. If the message did not go through then I would be willing to talk again, but I don't usually pursue a company more than once.

Description of Work: Our experience with Ron was an attempt to have a fireplace replaced in an older house. We had him over a few times to get a sense for what he would do (and paid for the visits) but in the end communication ended and we never heard from him again. In trying to find someone else we spoke to neighbors and contractors, some of whom who used him. The general sense is that he does great work if you can get the project agreed to and started. However, communication seems to be a problem; we heard several stories that were versions of our experience.

Response from Anderson Chimneys Fireplaces Masonry
I was contacted by (removed member name) interior decorator over two years ago to come and look at some fireplaces at the (removed member name) home. I first visited with the Interior decorator , then with the decorator and the (removed member name) for over and hour both times for free!!!! I gave the (removed member name) a quote to repair their fireplace so it could be converted to wood burning. For Free!!!, The After about one month (removed member name) decide that they did not want to go through the costly process of have the fireplace converted into wood burning. I then at (removed member name) request went back to his home FOR FREE and spent another hour or better going over his options for gas loos.We scheduled a time for Anderson Chimney to come back to his home to do some demo of his firebox to see what would be required to run gas lines to his firebox. Which we did for FREE!!! After that was completed (removed member name) was not in touch with me for over three months. When he finally got back into touch with me we made arrangments so come back over to his place to look online together at some vent free gas options, which I did for FREE! I showed (removed member name) some Victorian inserts which he seemed to like. I sold (removed member name) one of these Victorian inserts that I had at my cost to try and help him get his process completed. I had the unit dropped off at his home for FREE. I then did not here from (removed member name) for over three months again. When I finally heard back from (removed member name) he requested that I comeback to his house to discuss this process again. Which I did for Free. We finally decided on a install date. (removed member name) contacted me the day of the install date and informed that he wanted to wait because he was not sure if he wanted to install the unit he bought from me in his place. He thought they may want to go into another direction. Well to be honest at that point I was completely over the I tire process!! I sent (removed member name) a email requesting a payment of $203.25 which was the fee I get to do a fireplace cleaning. To be honest I feel that I shorted myself drastically. I was over (removed member name) home at least seven times. It cost me more in gas and employee wages to do the inspection of the fireplaces, the light demo to the firebox, the delivery of the Victorian unit to his house, as well as the countless hours of research for his job. I was happy just to get some form of payment from him at that point! I have not responded to (removed member name) emails because I don't wish to do any work for him. I can not afford to keep running over there for free. He seems to be a nice guy,but he is often gone out of the country for months at a time, and he seems to want people to jump at his beckoning call when he returns. I can not do that!!! I wish him luck in getting his process completed! Here are a few mails which I have attached so you guys can see for yourself. This first email is from the decorator 8-11-2011 Hi Ron, (removed member name), whom you and I met with last spring, is trying to get in touch with you to discuss the work. I think he is ready to proceed now, but not certain since we are not handling it. He has chosen to handle it directly. You might want to give him a call. I don't have a number for him, but you may have it since he likely left it for you. His email is fei Hope all is going well with you and the business. I learned a great deal about fireplaces from you! Thanks, Judith Gelatt Here is a email regarding the unit I sold to him at my cost. 6-04-2012 (removed member name), If I just had to install the gas line and the unit the cost would be $650.00, If you want me to demo the tile on the fireplace face ad the hearth it will be and additional 250.00 for demo and debris removal. If you want me to pour a base for you inner and outer hearth that cost for that will be $650.00. Getting this unit for $1,500.00 with the burner and remote is a steal. If you don't buy it I am going to and either sell it for 3000.00 or keep it for myself. Here is an email from 2-12-2013 Hi Ron. (removed member name) is back from China and we have regrouped on the living room fireplace. Here is the decision: We will go with an open fireplace with a new ventless log unit. The photo embedded in this email is the look we would like to achieve. We would prefer brick or tile to line the inside of the fireplaces but it may be cost prohibitive. Can you let us know the cost? If we can do it, we will. If it is too much, we will go with the black fleur de lis panels that are in the fireplace now. I think we are ready to move ahead. When can you get started? Thanks. Maura The last two emails that I will share are from 2013. The first is from (removed member name) to me and the second is my response! On Jan 5, 2013, at 12:07 PM, "(removed member name)" wrote: Hi Ron, Look, it is winter. I bought the unit in early fall. Still no fireplace. Just pick at time and I will coordinate with Dan to get the work done, even if my house is a wreck for a month. (removed member name) Hello (removed member name), Look????? I must admit (removed member name) that I an a little Taken back from your tune!!! Particularly when it is I who Has been to your home four different times Which has cost me money, and there was no cost to you! Also when I sold you the fireplace at my cost. Which I could have made at least 1500.00 on if I had not done that! I also had it delivered to you at no cost to you, which I payed for it to be delivered to you. Also (removed member name) it is your schedule that has posed the greatest challenge due to the fact that you are not in Pittsburgh for many months at a time. (removed member name) I am busy as well I can not just drop what is on my existing schedule to add you in just because you are finally ready to move forward! Lastly you have changed your mind numerous times about which direct you even want to go in which has further complicated the process! At this point I have to admit L(removed member name) I think it may be best if you contacted another chimney contractor who maybe able to a commentate your schedule and needs better. Most respectfully, Ron Anderson Anderson Chimney This was is reply!!! Hi Ron, I just heard this morning from Dan who now would like to book for late February and early March to work on the fireplace mantle and surround. So my goal would be to get the install done in the next 6 or 7 weeks. He would like to meet with you before the install to coordinate. Just for clarification, I wanted to make sure that you knew that my frustration wasn't with you, it was with how long it took me to find someone to do the finish work after the fireplace install. When the guy you recommended never answered my calls for called back when I left messages, I went through multiple people looking for recommendations. The people I contacted didn't respond, were busy, didn't do that kind of work, whatever. It has taken me a long time, but I didn't see that as your fault. Anyway, if you now don't want the project, that would be a real shame from my point of view since I would love to have you work on the place. But, if you don't want to, do you have a recommendation for someone? Thanks, (removed member name) Decide for yourself!!!

Very well.
Description of Work: We were told by the home inspector that we hired that our fireplace damper was inoperable, so I called this company. Don came out and fixed it in minutes..the flue was off kilter. He didn't charge us..even for the trip here. I happened to be making cookies, so he said a cookie would suffice. I gave him a few cookies and gas money ( which wasn't wasn't requested by him) There are many nice people in this world, and he is definitely one of them!!

As poor as it gets
Description of Work: I called 2 weeks ahead to schedule Ron for my gas log maintenance and some masonry work. He agreed to come on a certain day and time. I then called him the day before to confirm that he was coming. I got the answering machine (there is no receptionist...everytime you call you get the same recording)...He called back that evening and he mumbled something and my wife thought he was a telemarketer and said we're not interested. He then called back very angry and despite my wife's apologies (3 times) he seemed unsatisfied. He did confirm he would be there at the time agreed upon. I took a half day off from work and guess what...no show....no phone call...no courtesy. I put$ 250 in the out of pocket expense as that is how much I lost waiting for this bum. He is unprofessional and I suggest you choose someone else.

Response from Anderson Chimneys Fireplaces Masonry
I called Member's home to confirm with him the day before I was to arrive tO his home to do the inspection for his gas logs. When His wife answered my call I clearly spoke my name and who I represented , as well as why I was calling. She immediately without even giving me a chance to say anything to her ( we are not interested in any service and please take us off of your calling list) and then hung up on me!!! I immediately called Member's home back on for my call to go to voice mail! I made another call back which was answered by a child who at first told me there was no adult available, until I asked the child to explain to their parent that I had spoke to Member and that I had a scheduled appointment to come to their home for a chimney inspection the following day. Member's wife the got back on the phone and asked who I was and said she misunderstood what I was saying the other time I called. I found her initial interaction with me to be very rude when she was unwilling to even allow me to try and clarify why I was even calling before she decided to hang up on me. I was taking time out of my very busy schedule to go and do a free inspection for Member. I don't appreciate being hung up on or being just told anything to smooth over a very poorly handled situation. I think in the further if you are making appointments for service at your home you should make your wife aware so she is not hanging up on people and rejecting their calls to confirm sevice!! For your customers that we have had the opportunity to work for, you will find that we offer excellent service, we are on time and, we are fairly priced! I found my interaction with this customers wife as poor as it gets!

I initially contacted Mr. Anderson for a quote for work on my fireplace. I happened to catch him at the end of the day, but he said he would stop by in route to his last appointment. I was pleasantly surprised. When he arrived he was courteous and extremely knowledgeable about fireplaces (gas and woodburning) and was able to give me a round about estimate on the spot. What I didn't know is that he also does BRICK CLEANING, POINTING, REPAIR and REPLACEMENT of BRICK. On the way out of my house, he started politely pointing out things that I should consider having done to my home on the exterior (not pushing his services at all!). We walked the perimeter of my home (very large) and I asked him to submit an estimate which he promptly sent through email. After getting another bid, I hired Mr. Anderson because his price was a better value and because I could tell he really cared about the quality of work that he performs. He started within four days. Showed up on time. Did more than was asked, was careful to tape all windows and covered whatever could get damaged from the brick washing solution. Three workers finished within four days. Will use again in a flash. Great work!
Description of Work: Spot slush pointing, brick cleaning of entire house, brick replacement as needed

We are extremely pleased with the work that Ron did. This project had been on my wife's list for many years and stayed there because other companies we contacted wanted a fortune to do a lot of extra work that was not needed. Ron also showed up when he said he would be here and cleaned up after he finished the install.
Description of Work: Ron visited our home to give us an estimate for installing vent-free gas logs. He checked to make certain our fireplace was safe and showed us a number of different gas log sets. He also recommended a plumber to install a new gas line to the fireplace. Ron ordered the gas logs and installed them in about two hours.
