He was very good. He came and did his job and the floors still look very, very nice. His pricing was reasonable compared to other people we talked to.

The problem was that after 4 days, when some chairs were put down, the finish gouged. I also noticed more grit, like debris in the finish than I expected. Keith came out and offered to do whatever it took to fix it and re-screened the last finish and applied a new coat of polyurethane. I stayed out of the house for 5 days. The gouges were very nicely fixed and overall the floor looked nice but there was even more grit-like stuff or tiny bubbles in the finish. It seemed to me that something was going on between the re-screen and putting down the polyurethane, whether it was a tack cloth problem or the way the polurethane was applied. I called Keith back and he was supposed to come back to check it out and "make it right". But he never called that day and did not return my subsequent call. I think Keith is a good guy and was very responsive initially but he is a bit slow on returning phone calls. I simply don't have the time to re-do the work. The work is acceptable but not as smooth as I expected from all of the research I did and looking at friends' floors which had been refinished.
Description of Work: Keith refinished the hardwood floors in the living room (12x16) and dining room (12x11) both of which had extensive "pet" damage stains. He sanded, puttied everything and applied three coats of polyurethane. It turned out that the floors are maple and didn't stain as badly as expected so we did not use any stain.

This is an addendum to the Report from February 06, 2008. After finishing the job, Keith promised to come back and fix the hole in the staircase under the second floor. He never did that in spite of my multiple calls and promises. Don't trust his word to finish the job after you paid him. Only pay when everything is done. He sounds very nice talking to you, but he will ignore you after you paid him.

In September 2007, Keith did a significant restoration, sanding and poly-ing of the second floor of a house we just bought. His work was quite good. And he was enjoyable to work with. There was one room where the poly had piled up around a radiator cover. As with the other rooms, we had told Keith that we did not want the radiator cover up there. But for some reasons he had returned it to only this one room and it has messed up the poly a small bit. We had not noticed this until November or so (the next 2 months we had a lot of other work done in the rooms: painting, restoration, etc, it took us a while to notice it and a couple of weeks to call him). After calling him several times, he did not respond until I left a message saying that I was frustrated and would have to report it to Angie's list if he did not respond. We finally spoke and I said that we could be very flexible but needed the job done by May 1 because my wife was pregnant and this was for the baby's room. He updated me in February and said it would be a couple of months. By mid May, I had not heard from him. After two more call and one more threat to lodge a bad report on Angie's List, he called. Once we set a time, he said he would have to charge me for the work. After much back and forth, I said that I would pay him, but I did not think that it was appropriate to charge me for a repairing a flaw in a previous job. I left our house unlocked and he never came on the arranged date. Since then he has not returned 3 or 4 messages. I have finally done the repairs myself. It is a shame because- up until this issue- he was a pleasant person who did good work. But I feel like he has been rude and inconsiderate in the way he has treated me and would NEVER work with him again.
Description of Work: Restored, sanded and poly-ed the second floor of a 1300 sq foot duplex. Floors had been under wall-to-wall for a long time.

Response from KEITH OHM HARDWOOD FLOORS
It is unfortunate that the member finds me responsible for what he called "a small mess up of poly." I am a professional and I handle all jobs accordingly. My goal on every job is to complete the job to the customer's satisfaction. I also make it a habit to put and place everything back where I find it, and I was not told, and I repeat, not told to not replace the radiator cover where I found it. The member's job was completed in September to his satisfaction. As the member mentioned, he had a lot of other work done in the room, meaning other contractors doing painting, restoration, etc. Possibly, this damage could have been the cause of something else and not negligence on my part. I told the member I had no problem doing a repair job for him, however he would have to be put on the schedule for the next available opening. After numerous angry phone calls from the member, I made a conscious decision not to take on his repair job because of his bad attitude and unprofessionalism. Bottom line is the member does say the work was quite good and I was enjoyable to work with then goes on again to mention what a pleasant person I was who did good work and a good job. He only seemed to change his mind (3 months later) when he didn't get his way, and that was to have someone do a repair job at his demand for free. - Keith Ohm, Contractor

Keith did an outstanding job and we are thrilled with the results. He's very detail oriented, and spent days filling in cracks and puttying over nails so that they wouldn't shine through the stain. Moldings around the edges were sanded by hand, even in the closets. He also provided good advice about picking a stain color and finish. He was respectful of our property, was careful to seal off rooms that weren't being worked on, and cleaned up after himself every day. He works by himself, so the project took a while, but the end result was completely worth the wait. We couldn't be happier with our new floors; they are gorgeous! Keith gets an A+ from us, and a unconditional recommendation.
Description of Work: Keith sanded, stained, and finished approximately 850 square feet of oak flooring in our 1925 carriage house. The floors were in good condition overall and did not need any major repairs. However, they did have many small nails that had to be finished, radiators, and some wood moldings around the edges that had to be worked by hand.

DETAILS. A fabulous job is all about the details, and Keith is picky about every little one. Keith's work exceeded my expectations. He puts putty over the nail holes so that the nail heads aren't shiny. He hand paints the poly instead of using a mop. He is concerned about every threshold and every board in every room. He doesn't cut even one tiny corner and you are assured of the quality because he works by himself. My floors took longer than he expected because of the extensive repairs that were required. Although, I paid for the extra material (he used 45 boards) he did not charge one penny for the three additional days of labor. I got Keith's name from friends who used him. Five or six of their friends used him as well and all were thrilled with the quality of his work. I almost didn't call because I had already gotten several estimates. I am so thankful I did. He was the middle price but gave me the best gut feeling. He was honest and forthright from the beginning.
Description of Work: Keith sanded and refinished four rooms (727 sq ft) and 15 steps. He repaired multiple areas of the floor. He installed quarter round, stained the floor, and applied three coats of poly.

Keith came to my home in a timely fashion the first day to give me an estimate. I had heard that he did a wonderful job through my neighbors. His estimate was competitive, so I elected to go with his services. We then scheduled a time. He only worked on my job that week, so he gave my job his full attention. He started on a Monday and finished on a Saturday, after sanding, staining, and coating the floors with 3 coats of polyurethane. He arrived everyday and stayed until the task was done. I even saw him there at 8:00 PM. He worked by himself, so the process may have taken longer, but he did an extraordinary job. He was so careful to be clean-up daily, and he was very respectful of my property. When he showed up late one morning, he called me and said that he was running late because his child was ill, but he called me to let me know, which is impressive. If I had more hardwood floors, I would hire him again.
Description of Work: I had my hardwood floors sanded and refinished with three coats of polyurethane in my kitchen and my living room. He also fixed some areas that needed to be repaired with new wooden boards.
