Glen was very punctual, and even a little early, for the appointment. He explained the findings from the inspection well, and was able to do most of the repairs on the spot. He did seem a bit distracted and hurried, though, and his prices were higher than I expected. The work he did seems to be good.

After the flooring company discovered that our refridgerator was leaking and the floor was rotting underneath, they left us hanging (had already paid 2/3 for the new floor, and now our washer, dryer, refridgeratore and toilet were uninstalled). They said they would not move the refridgerator or fix the floor in order to continue putting in the new floor. We were stuck: our plumber didn't want to do it and the appliance company would fix the fridge, but not move it or fix the floor. I called Jack of all trades as they sounded like someone who would do many different kinds of things. Shockingly, Glen called me back within an hour, and then offerred to stop by to assess the situation the same day, on a Thurs evening. He came and pried the refridgerator out of the floor, and moved it across the room. By Friday, he fixed the floor to the correct level that the flooring company could come back and finish the floor. After all that, the great thing was that I had forgotten to ask him to drill a hole for the water to be re-installed for the ice-maker. He stopped by and not only drilled the hole, but went back into the crawl space and fed the line back up through the hole (no extra charge). It is really great to work with Glen. I highly recommend him.

about 3 wks of work on our house: reinstalled 3 ceiling fans, installed a new plaster ceiling in our Living Room, put a new door in te garage, replaced a screen door to the deck, refurbished the entire deck, painted most of the 2nd floor. All of the work looked - and still looks - great. It has held up well - so well that we called him back to do more work this past summer. He worked most days by himself, some days with another workman. The work was quality work & always completed within estimated time and budget, I'd hire again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Jake, of Jake of all Trades did a great deal of work on our house as we are putting it up for sale. We'd also had an attempted burglary & the guy who DID manage to break in did it by breaking our back door - literally. Our house is very old and all of the sizes are unusual & require custom work. None of the doors are standard, none of the windows - nothing. When I called Jake, it was initially to fix the door. We agreed on a time & he showed up about 5 minutes early. His questions were reasonable and thoughtful & he agreed to provide an estimate the next day. I found the estimate in our front door when I opened it at 8:00 AM. The estimate (which was free) detailed all of the work he would do precisely & gave a time estimate of 3 days. We agreed on a day. He showed up on time that day & every other day & worked 8 - 10 hrs. each day. He tried to replace (but couldn't find the non-standard door sizes) so ended up fixing the door & it looks great - as if it had never been touched! He did

Jack of All trades was very communicative with me. I was taking care of items from a home inspection, so I had an escalated schedule, making things a little tough to fit me in. The lady on the phone was very kind, understood my predicament, and talked with the owner directly, to see if he could work in a time, either late, on a weekend, or if a slot opened up. Though I didn't use them, as I found someone who had very quick availability, their kindness, responsiveness, and good price make me want to recommend them, as they tried to bend over backwards to help, and I really appreciate that.

During these heavy rain days, we had a basement leaky. I called a few providers. Glenn gave a quick response. He came to check. When he disconnected the heater-chimney part, with a very brief glimpse, he immediately told me a bad news that I needed a new chimeny liner. I would like to have more solid evidence to show that a new liner is really needed! But this seems not easy. He explained that this was level 1 check (only cost $75 for the brief look). If I wanted to check further, he needed to charge me more! The leak was not related to the chimney. Because I was in a stage of renting the house, I wanted to make the house nice and get the job done quickly. I decided to ask Glenn to put the new liner and paint the chimney. However, even now, I am not convinced I needed the new liner. He put the new liner. But he replaced my original big chimney cap with a very small one. Not sure that is good or not. Later I found that his price range was high! We will see how the quality of his job.

Response from Jack of All Trades Inc & Chimney Sweep Services
(Member name removed) called me on a Saturday concerned about water getting in her basement from her chimney. She requested a free inspection and was not happy when I told her inspections weren't free. She agreed to pay for the inspection and I was at her house that same day and and time I told her I would be there. I noticed she had a newer cap so I decided to start my inspection inside to see where the water was coming in. She took me in the basement and showed me the heater pipe that goes into the wall...About 3 inches below the pipe there appeared to be water stains. As she stood next to me I then proceeded to remove the heater pipe so I could see what was going on inside the flue. Because the flue is dark inside I AWAYS CARRY A FLASHLIGHT SO I CAN SEE INSIDE. As I shined me FLASHLIGHT in the flue I noticed a large pile of decomposed terra cotta constricting her flue 60%-70%. At this point I showed (Member name removed) the pile of debris with my FLASHLIGHT...reached in and pulled some pieces out and explained what it was and how it got there. She claimed she was a chemist so I broke it down to her explaining what happens when sulfur from the oil heater reacts with rain water or any moisture creates sulfuric acid which eats the clay terra cotta liner causing it to break down & collapse leaving holes in the flue and choking off the passageway of the exhaust gas. This is dangerous because now the is the potential for the gasses from the heater to come into the house and can cause illness and/or death (carbon monoxide). This meant she needed to have her heater flue re-lined. She said she understood. I continued my inspection on the roof and noticed crown and flashing issues but still didnt understand where the water was coming in to the basement. I then looked at the base of the chimney, noticed the grade was sloped toward the chimney and also noticed her downspout became disconnected and was dumping water at the base of the chimney. I fixed the downspout (at no cost) and showed her what I found...this was the source of the leak. I gave her a full inspection report and a breakdown of all that needed to be done to correct the chimney issues as well as information on the liner. She claimed that if was to much money and proceeded to tell me how much she should pay for each item...I defended my prices for 10 minutes and then finally gave in and discounted my services just to make her happy (she also asked me to paint her chimney for free which I explained was going to take me several hours to do and wouldn't be fair to me). I also explained to her that many of her neighbors had similar work done and you could see the ones that had been lined by the caps they had on the chimney. She told me to do the work, we scheduled for the following Saturday and I left. On Tuesday I received a call from (Member name removed) telling me she wasn't going to get the work done because I was too expensive and she didnt believe she needed her chimney lined. She asked me to then further discount my services which I told her I couldn't go any lower. I also told her that its her decision...my job was to find the problems and inform her how to fix...her job was to decide weather or not to do anything about it...I then told her to call 2 other CSIA certified chimney sweep companies and even gave her the names telling her if she still wanted me to come out after that I needed to know by Thursday so I could get her materials ready. She did call on Thursday and told me she wanted me to do the work. When I arrived at 11am sharp (as scheduled) I started the job installing the stainless steel liner found a hole under the pipe in the foundation where the water was coming in from, repaired with hyrdolic cement and completed my job. (Member name removed) questioned the integrity of the liner I install which I explained in detail to her type, size, thickness and draft principles and warranty (lifetime which I gave her the warranty registration form)....she question cap size ( which I explained liner comes as a kit with a special cap for the liner) but still didnt seem happy. I also explained where the water was coming in from and how I fixed. She still was very concerned that I didnt fix properly. I told her I would come back to fix the water issue if it still leaked because I am convinced its fixed 100%. That seemed to put her at ease. I was then paid and I went on my way... What I don't understand is why would she give a bad review if I did all I said I was going to do and then some...nothing changed in the written estimate I gave her at the time of inspection, was punctual and guaranteed my work and materials. On top of that she admitted to me that she never called the other two chimney companies to confirm what I had found and said, "they would just tell me the same thing you told me!" She never called them to just get prices as well. (Member name removed) called me a week later and asked me to do more work for her which never got done because she didnt like my price...why would she call me back if she thinks I did such a bad job??? I don't get it. For the record I did call (Member name removed) to find out why she is so unhappy and she has yet to return my call

Glen came out and evaluated all the jobs I needed. I did ask for a quote for replacing the front brick stoop, but that prices was too high. However, the remaining work was within my budget. The first day of the job, Glen was not the person to do the work. Two other workers came out and they were very professional, polite, and did the job they were hired to do. Excellent quality. The second day to finish up the sanding of the wall board a another worker, different from the first two came out. He was very polite and professional and was extremely helpful. He put down plastic on everything so not to get the sanding dust on anything. He did a great job. Overall, no complaints with using Jack-of-Alltrades and I would not hesitate to use them again. Update: I received an invoice and they adjusted the price down from their quote due to less time needed to do one of the services. You can't go wrong with this company.

The owner of the company (sorry, I don't remember his name and lost his card when I moved) came on time and was very professional. It was raining and the work was out on my deck but that didn't seem to matter. While replacing the damaged siding, he discovered that a nearby exterior electrical outlet was not quite wired correctly and fixed that free of charge. Did a very nice job on the siding replacement. I would definitely use this company again if I was still living in the area. His price seemed reasonable but I have nothing to compare it to.

My first encounter with Glen was to sweep my chimney. He came on time and did a very professional job. He pointed out, with photos, that the terra catta inside of the chimney was cracked and needed repair. He came out again, on time, and installed a sleeve inside the chimney in a professional, timely fashion. Today, he came out to build a pad for a 20K watt generator I purchased. He again, showed up on time and buitl the pad even though it was raining. It looks great and I am using his electrician for the installation. Glen is my go-to man for anything I might need a professional for - I've had some truly bad experiences with other contractors, but I cannot give any higher recommendation then Jack-of-all-Trades. Glen Layton is as trustworthy as any contractor I've ever dealt with.

Response from Jack of All Trades Inc & Chimney Sweep Services
After we got in contact with the homeowner, I (the owner of Jack of All Trades, Inc.) went out and met with her at her house to resolve the 6 year old issue of the rust stain on the chimney. As I pulled up to her house I immediately recognized the glaring reflection from the stainless steel cap from the liner I personally installed (6 years ago) atop her chimney. Being stainless steel it still gleamed as if it was still brand new! I met her at the door and we started down in the basement. I explained the difference of stainless steel and aluminum liners. I showed her the stainless steel liner protruding through her foundation wall connecting to her heater which she concurred was stainless steel. I then got the ladder out and climbed to the top of her chimney. Yes there was the presense of rust but not coming from the stainless steel liner or cap I installed. There was however wire mesh embedded in the mortar crown which pre-existed any work we ever did. This was the cause of the rust. I asked the homeowner if she would like to climb the ladder to see for herself...she refused...so I took pictures to prove my findings and showed them to her. She admitted that the stainless steel was not rusting and saw the rusty wire staining the crown which I explained that it was embedded in the mortar crown of her chimney probably when the house was built...I offered to try an experiment to see if it was still rusting by cleaning off some bricks of the rust and see if it would return. She agreed and I climbed back up the ladder with a bucket of water, scrub brush and cleaner and scrubbed her chimney (at no charge). After I was finished I told her that the crown should be sealed and the chimney power washed and the rust would not reappear (my solution to her problem)...she was in a rush to leave and said she would call me later to discuss further. As to this date I still have not received a call from (Member) nor a thank you for the 1.5 hours I spent over there to prove her rust issue was not from our work. I also did some research to she if she had called the office several times (as she stated) 6 years ago...there is no record of her number calling the office after the liner was installed.
