Reimagine Your Home - with our 3 Stage Remodeling Experience
We want to emphasize the importance of this moment in our customers’ lives—and our duty to them as we guide them through their transformation. We put in the extra effort, so every customer’s experience is more convenient. We do everything possible to anticipate needs, eliminate barriers, and bring customers into the process—and into the joy of reimagining their space.
Stage 1: Space Planning
Once we understand your goals and budget, our architectural designers develop a series of three potential layouts for your upgraded space. These layouts represent three different price points within your budget, showing you a range of what’s possible in your space.
Stage 2: Design Selections
From floors and cabinets to light fixtures and paint, we help you choose the details that complement your vision. As you walk through your virtual space, you can start to see how your decisions become reality and make any changes before we start construction.
Stage 3: Construction
We’ll notify the neighbors, pull the permits, and schedule every detail so you’ll never worry or wonder what’s next. We’re prompt, we’re precise, and we’re always here to answer your questions and anticipate your family’s needs as you watch your new space take shape.
Services we don't offer
We do not take on small stand-alone projects such as replacing windows or interior painting unless it is part of a much larger project.

We hired West Chester Design Build for our kitchen remodel and we are very pleased with the experience. Chris Payson and his team displayed professionalism, courteousness, and quality workmanship. Brian, Wes and Norm are very talented tradesmen. Brian, the lead carpenter, took care of the many details of the job and did beautiful work. Wes is also a talented carpenter and his tile work is beautiful as well. Norm is an experienced plumber and a very conscientious professional. Our new kitchen is fabulous! West Chester DB is a pleasure to do business with and we highly recommend them for any design/remodel job. It would be a pleasure to work with Chris and his team again.
This was a unique and big undertaking. We wanted a party room/club in our basement with, full bar, stage and unusual lighting. I designed most of it myself and they did an absolutely brilliant job taking what was in my head and turning into a fantastic space for parties and events. The basement was previously unfinished so they took it from nothing to completion. They were very professional, clean, and the quality was wonderful. They also had good ideas to help the design come together, they totally got our vision and were all about getting it just right. There was a lot of electric work to do and their electrician did a fantastic job putting in lots of colored lights to make it look club like. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. If there was one negative thing to say it would be that it did cost a bit more than they originally estimated and it took longer than I anticipated but it was definitely worth it. I can't say enough about what they accomplished it was just fantastic and have thrown many parties in the space and people just love it.
Description of Work: Remodeled our unfinished basement into a party room/club.

WEST CHESTER DESIGN/BUILD LLC was too busy to do this job within the timeframe I required - but they called me back within hours (if not minutes) of posting my request to explain their limitations, and recommend a contractor to me - local to my area - that they thought might be able to do the job within my timeframe for a reasonable price. I was rather impressed by their professionalism, honesty, and selfless recommendation to me.

I called Chris and to get an estimate to remodel my upstairs. He responded quickly to my call, set up an appointment, came on time and was very easy to work with. I like d the estimate and I wanted to work with them but I got an offer on my house and sold it without the remodel. All through the estimate process - they were great.

After reading several reviews on Angie's list and interviewing several contractors we decided to go with WC DB and Chris Payson. They came over and measured and looked and the space and listened to our wish list. They did a great job of really looking at what we wanted and thinking creatively about how they could use the space to create a great living opportunity. They had great communication skills as they walked us through when they needed decision made and when items would be delivered and installed. The listed to our ideas too. When we ran into slight snags such as the original drawings (from the original builder) being slightly off they offered great alternatives. The crew at WC DB were fabulous, I wasn't looking forward to having strangers in my house for several months but if I had to have anyone, it would definitely be Norm, Brian, Kimberly, etc. They were extremely customer focused and professional. They always showed up on time or early, they were conscious science and great with communication too. If they had questions they asked before moving forward. The finished product is great, We love it and it represents us well. We would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Designed a multi-use basement to include storage, a workshop, workout room, full wet bar, TV lounge, and game area. They also finished a room above the garage as a bonus room.
From the framers to the painters, these guys were incredibly good! Finishing my basement was the first, major home project my wife and I set out to do so naturally, I was skeptical of every company who provided me a quote. After visiting w/ four different people, I was particularly impressed with Chris Payson of West Chester Design Build. I appreciated his professionalism, his vision for my space, his follow-up and his fair, detailed quote. (of note: There were no surprise expenses along the way.) After selecting WCDB, I was equally impressed to see how much cooperation their was between Chris's employees. The plumber, framer, drywall installers, electrician and designer all worked well as a team. There was productive communication between all of them throughout the project. I work from home so I saw it every day firsthand! I popped in on the project often (about twice/day) and I also noticed that these guys never cut corners! On the contrary, I'd see them do extra. I recall the plumber pointing out and fixing an existing plumbing issue that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. That kind of extra effort and attention to detail gave me added confidence that these guys wouldn't disappoint. Their designer, Kimberly, was also involved throughout the process. She came up with a great design for my space. I needed some "hand holding" throughout the project to pick out colors, patterns, carpet, tile etc and she was always accessible. In short...she was great. Lastly, don't worry about privacy. Everyone was considerate of me and my family and kept all the work flow through the bilcow doors. These guys also bring their own portable toilet and position it discreetly behind their construction dumpster so I never even had to share my bathroom. They were very clean too! My favorite part of the day was checking progress in the evening. I had no problems taking my 4 year old downstairs every night because the area was always left swept, cleaned and organized...every night. My basement is now a transformed, 1000 square ft living area with a wet bar and play room. I highly recommend West Chester Design Build!
Description of Work: Finished basement with bar and playroom.
Every person that came to came to complete the different pieces of my job was curteous, on time & professional. I felt safe having them in my house and best of all they cleaned up nicer than it was when they arrived. Also the quality of work was way beyond what I expected for such a fabolous price. I did not have a ton of money to spend and the first estimate I got would have made me bankrupt. Their estimate was reasonable and their work was of a higher quality I think than I would have gotten if I had paid the person who gave me the ridicolous first estimate. I will be bringing them back to do more work when I have saved some more money for home improvements guaranteed! I believe they offer a better overall service, at a better price than anyone else!
Description of Work: West Chester Design & Build oversaw the entire renewal of my kitchen with new flooring & cabinets and turning my mudroom into a brand new laundry room and full bathroom.

We were consulted about each of the details of the design and finishes. We chose higher end products so the porch would be no or low maintenance. This added to the cost, but without those choices, we thought the cost of the project was quite reasonable. The project took longer than we expected, but that was mainly due to a problem with doors that arrived damaged and had to be reordered. Overall, we were very pleased with the project and would hire them again.
Description of Work: They built a screen porch for us that is absolutely beautiful! The project was completed by West Chester Design from start to finish. They developed the plans and design, helped us get permission from the HOA, and completed all work other than contracting out the gutter installation. The design fits perfectly with the design of the house and looks as if it was original to the house

They came out and remodeled our kitchen to include hardwood floors in foyer, family room and dining room. During the consulting and planning portion of the project, they offered creative options and product options to fit our budget. Allowed us to do some of the work, ourselves - some demolition and the painting within their timeline to defray costs Prompt, courteous service. A pleasure to work with throughout the project and with all members of the team. Timely with the plan - upon starting, worked and completed within seven weeks. Creative ideas and craftmanship notable as the attention to detail accented a job well done. We highly recommend them!

Analysis, problem solving, estimations (per corrections), and SERVICE were impeccable. And, without Chris Payson's help & referral (his network), I'd likely be back at step-one, second guessing myself! I was and remain very impressed by Chris Payson. He spent a great deal of time with me (without contract). He was very professional, polite, and honest (per evaluation as compared to other contractors). He even adjusted my toilet AT NO COST TO ME, and it ceased to leak thereafter. I will definitely call upon Chris again. His designs are beautiful and, really, with all I've said above, I cannot help but give this man his props. I will HIGHLY recommend him to my friends and family.
Description of Work: I called Christopher Payson at Design Build, LLC, located West Chester, PA, after seeing his name (and viewing his expertise) @ Angie's List. I'd had a brand-new shower installed -- by a contractor I had no familiarity with, unfortunately -- that was leaking badly, in addition to a leaky toilet, as well. Chris arrived right on time for our appointment. And after thoroughly checking out the shower, he told me that glass shower doors are tricky to put in (install), lest one's contractor is wholly experienced in the process. Chris did not "drop names," nor did he care to gather or "discuss" names (contractors). He furthermore declined himself the answer to remedy my said problem. Instead, he told me that I'd do better to talk to someone who regularly fits glass doors to bath & showers at homes similarly built to mine -- I live at Hershey Mills, West Chester, PA, and though it is a beautiful residence I've purchased, there are "known" problems to some homes in my Village within (Hershey Mills), due to building methods implemented & used at the time of construction. In sum, Chris referred me to Craig Pappas. A fellow professional tradesman, whose work Chris is vastly familiar with. An "expert," said Chris. And he couldn't have been more on target... (I eventually came to learn that Craig Pappas (Chris' referral) is almost always on-call here at Hershey Mills. So it was a pleasure & relief to have "the right individual" look into my bathroom's problems.

Chris Payson and the team at WCDB did a fantastic job on our home remodel from Jan-Mar 2013. The WCDB team is very professional, honest, and courteous organization which puts a high priority on customer service and high quality finishes. WCDB remodeled our entire home which included a higher-end kitchen, two full bathrooms, powder room, laundry room, family room, hardwood floors, new moldings, and interior doors. Chris and his team kept the project on-time and on-budget. I cannot thank Chris (GC), Norm (plumbing), Wes (carpenter), Brian (carpenter), and Scott (electrician) for all of their hard work and professionalism through the entire process. Our family could not be happier with the results of our home remodel. Thank You WCDB! I highly recommend WCDB!

The project wasn't right for this company, so no work was completed. I would definitely call for future projects.
Description of Work: Chris followed up my email request for information with a call the next day. He was extremely professional and helpful. He talked me through our screened-in porch demolition project even though it wasn't a job that was right for his company. He spent a while with me on the phone and even told me he'd be happy to help more if I sent some pictures for him. I sent the pictures and he sent a very detailed response. He was so kind to take the time with me even though he was receiving no monetary compensation. I will definitely call West Chester Design/Build for any future projects.

We hired West Chester Design and Build to do an extensive kitchen remodel. They designed a completely new kitchen layout with a new island, window, and arched entryway. Their workmanship was top-notch and throughout the project they asked for our input to ensure that the kitchen was exactly what we wanted. Honestly, I can't say enough about how great the guys were and I wouldn't hesitate to hire any one of them again for a future project. In addition to being incredibly talented at what they do, they were courteous and very respectful of our privacy and of our home. In addition to the amazing team that built the kitchen, they also have an interior designer on staff that can help with everything from selecting paint color and tiles to designing a decorative backsplash. She has an amazing eye and really helped make some of the tougher design decisions a breeze. I doubt any kitchen remodel goes without incident. During the project, we hired another company to replace the kitchen flooring and they burst a pipe flooding our garage. Even though it had nothing to do with West Chester, one of the guys came over at 5:30 straight from another job site and he worked until 8 to fix the pipe so that we would have running water again. This was all organized by Chris Payson, the owner, while he was on vacation. I think that kind of responsiveness really sets West Chester Design and Build apart. When things go badly, you want to know that the team will go the extra mile to make it right. The fact that they fixed this when it wasn't even their mistake says a lot about their commitment to making the project a success. The team created an amazing kitchen that has all of our friends in awe and that we will love for years to come.

[member name removed] and [member name removed], thank you so much for trusting us with your special kitchen project. You guys were a joy to work for and every day you brought smiles to our team members. The kitchen looks great! Adding that double window really improved the natural light in the kitchen! These types of projects are not easy, but together we made a great team and accomplished something really special. I'm sure Stephen is loving the kitchen TV we installed, and being able to watch his soccer matches while prepping for meals. Talk to you soon!
Chris and team were extremely professional from day 1. The work was very good and everything was completed on time and as scheduled from the original plan. Chris provided us with a great design, one we had not considered but now that we have it done, it was the only way it really would have worked. From demolition, to framing, to drywall, carpentry and painting, we were very pleased with the work completed. Everyday the site was cleaned up and organized. There were little extra touches they did with some trim around the posts and the painting one of the walls with blackboard paint. Chris was responsive to questions we had and easy to get in touch with. We would definitely recommend Chris and West CHester Design for work you might be considering.
Description of Work: West Chester Design finished our basement. They did all the work except for the flooring but did provide a very good recommendation there. The basement was partially framed out from the previous owner, but all against code. Chris provided a great design which included tearing out the existing framing and the finishing the rest of the basement.

Hi [member name removed], thanks so much for the feedback! Your project was a perfect example of what West Chester Design/Build loves to do! From day one, it was easy for us to see how your old basement was laid out poorly and was not allowing you to take full advantage of the large space you had. By redesigning the layout for you, and taking care of that small foundation leak, it allowed for all new possibilities for your lower level. The finished project looks fantastic! You and [member name removed] did a wonderful job selecting paint colors and a nice carpeting for downstairs. It was great to see your family already enjoying the new finished space! You guys will love it for many many years to come! We will stay in touch, let us know if you need anything.

There were numerous instances when Payson contractors washed down their work area sending sand and silt that covered about 40 feet of my front sidewalk with a layer of mud. I brought it to their attention and only once did they clean the mess they made on my walk. The remaining 6 or 7 times I had to clean up the mess they made on my property. I maintained my patience in these matters to preserve the good relations I have with my neighbors. Several times in November I found large stones and broken bricks strewn on my lawn that were covered over by leaves. I found that I had to check the lawn before mowing so as not to damage my lawn tractor. The Payson contractors were very careless with disposal of most debris and it was ending up on my property.
Description of Work: My neighbor contracted for building a garage which now stands 4 feet away from my property line. The construction was done by R.Chris Payson, West Chester Design/Build LLC. Photo 1a depicts my lawn mid-June 2012, several months before start of construction. The end of the white fence is the location of my property line. On the 25th of September my wife and I returned from an upstate funeral, and on that evening my neighbor called me to tell me that my lawn was torn up by Payson Contractors. He said that he asked Payson to put up a silt fence before starting construction, but the builder did not comply. He said that Payson had a silt fence, but they failed to install it because it would inhibit excavation for the garage foundation. Photo 2, was taken on 9/26/2012 at 7:57 am. Subsoil dirt, stones and broken bricks were piled on my property to a height of three feet. My lawn was torn up in spots by treads of the loader used to excavate a foundation (see photo 3). I confronted the Lead Carpenter (Wes Yoder) and asked him what he was going to do about the destruction of my lawn? His answer was “when we are finished it will look better that it was”. Photo 4 and 5 taken on10/23/2012 and 11/16/2012 respectively depicts lawn damage extending about 8 feet into my property. I called Chris Payson (Designer & Project Manager) on or about April 24 I told him that my lawn certainly “doesn't look better than it was before”. When I asked what he was going to do about my lawn, he told me that the job is completed and he will not be back to the garage site. Photo 6 was taken on 4/25/2013, and depicts that Payton contractors only leveled the remaining clay subsoil; no top soil was replaced. They didn't even seed the area that they damaged. When I purchased my property in 1968, I had topsoil brought into the front of the house to replace the clay and subsoil that the builder left for topsoil. Most of my front lawn consisted mostly of Zoysia grass that took years to establish.

Chris and his crew: Brian (main carpenter & project manager), Wes (carpenter), Norm (plumber), and Scott (electrician) were absolutely fantastic. We haven't left the room since it's been finished! Chris understood our vision and executed it better than we could have imagined. He presented us with a color drawing to show us his plan for the room, which helped us to envision the room. Along the way, when the group had ideas that would add to the space, they brought them to us. More often than not, we went with those ideas. Also we had a tight timeline because we were expecting a baby & the whole crew worked with us along the way. They were extremely flexible, respectful, trustworthy, and professional at all times. We would definitely recommend them and use them again.

The solution: After qualifying for a home accessibility loan through Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA), my wife and I contacted Chris at West Chester Design and Build. After explaining our situation and our needs, Chris was more than happy to come out personally to give an assessment. The assessment came in right under budget and was considerably fair. In addition, Chris was more than happy to work with the PHFA process, which meant that he would be required to submit more than the usual amount of paperwork and extend extra patience throughout the process. Throughout the entire project, Chris was professional, understanding, and simply apleasure to work with. The work: Once the contract was signed, Chris? team got started right away. His team was outstanding! They were professional, courteous, and diligent, which is something we appreciated. We found them to be incredibly trustworthy and respectful, which is so important when you have people working in your home and around your family. The finished work was simply outstanding. His team of carpenters showed a level of craftsmanship that a guy whose father works in the trades can appreciate. Their work is clean and they also clean up after themselves. Their attention to detail really made the finished product that much better. When we imagined ramping the front entry, we were not sure what the finished product might look like. We have seen so many ramp entries that are not very aesthetically pleasing, ramps that unfortunately take away from the look of the house. We were so pleased with how they crafted a ramp/deck area out front that we feel actually improved the look of our house and the curb appeal! The team finished everything in a reasonable amount of time, and now my wife and I have a wonderful home that she can enjoy to the fullest. Not only that, we have had dozens of compliments from people that visit in regard to remodel. People (even those well versed in accessibility work) often ask us who did the work and tell us that it is some of the best accessibility work they have seen. Chris and his team showed us that they were knowledgeable in and attentive to ADA accessibility guidelines. This was critical for us! The recommendation: If you need a contractor that is reliable, professional, courteous, does an outstanding job, and comes in at a fair price, then Chris and WestChester Design and Build are your guys! We felt so comfortable knowing that he was overseeing the work and that he wanted to be proud of the final product. The work speaks for itself- check out the pictures! Nate E.
Description of Work: Home Accessibility Remodel First, let me start by saying that my wife is a wheelchair user, and finding a house that is wheelchair friendly --let alone accessible!--is near impossible. However, this summer we were blessed to have found a home that worked for us…mostly. That’s where Chris and his team at West Chester Design and Build came in. Our needs: The house we purchased is a ranch style, cinderblock design built circa 1956. The house is great, and has had several remodels over the years (e.g. kitchen, main bathroom, gas fireplace, etc.), though it still was not adequate for our accessibility needs. Our needs were as follows: 1) we needed a ramped entry at the front of the house, 2) part of a wall removed within the house to create a ramp entry to access to the sun room, and 3) an extension to our existing driveway pad to allow for a level parking surface and room for the side ramp of a wheelchair accessible van to fully extend.
I LOVE THESE GUYS!!! They were simply fantastic to work with. An exceptional team of very talented carpenters, plumber and electrician. They were courteous and respectful, cleaned up after themselves, and of course did amazing work. They were so dedicated to making the space great and helping us to maximize the design and functionality of our basement. Chris Payson was wonderful to work with throughout the project. Now don't get me wrong - the whole project wasn't completely perfect - there were some material delays and a couple of issues with one of their contractors and interior designer. But I don't think it is realistic to think that a major project like this would not have some minor issues. The real test of a good contractor is how they handle these issues, and West Chester Design Build is simply top notch. Chris was extremely responsive and took immediate action on every issue to which I expressed concern. The final result is OUTSTANDING and I can say without hesitation that we recommend them to anyone and definitely plan to use them again for future projects.

I moved into a single family home with my daughter and son-in-law with the intentions of renovating a portion of the existing home into an attached in-law suite. Chris drew up the plans, presented a proposal and was significantly less than the other offers we had received. Once starting the job, Chris and his team were here everyday, professional and friendly, working hard to complete the job in a timely manner. All told, it was about 2-3 months from start to completely finished, which seemed very reasonable to us for the amount of work that went into the project. We were very pleased with the results and have received numerous compliments on the job. We would absolutely recommend Chris Payson and West Chester Design/Build for any home project and hope to work with Chris again in the future.
Description of Work: Renovated two car garage and office into large (approx 850 sq ft) two bedroom, one bath apartment/in-law-suite with large kitchen, dining and living area. Attached to single family home.
They were always prompt and got the work done in a timely fashion. Everyone was kind, neat and respectful in our home. They left the home very clean and dust free.
Description of Work: My main floor had NO closets. So, West Chester Design and Build helped me find a great space for 2 large closets and spent a long time working with me to create the design and shelving of the closets. They also put in a doggie door and painted my daughter's room. Their carpenter hand made two gates in my porch to keep my puppies from running away. The work was exceptional and the craftsmen were courteous, professional and highly skilled. The work looks incredible. I couldn't be happier with what they did.

We do not take on small stand-alone projects such as replacing windows or interior painting unless it is part of a much larger project.
