Our State Power Vent hot water heater had been malfunctining for almost 1 year. The burner would occasionally turn off prematurely or wouldn't light off at all. It got very bad the last weekend in July 2012. I consulted the water heater Instruction Manual to trouble shoot the problem. After checking that out, I decided that it might be a malfunctioning gas control valve. I tried gently tapping on the control valve when the water heater was in the startup mode. Occasionally the burner would fire up. I decided now it was time to hire a plumber.Over a year ago,a friend of ours, with the same type of hot water heater, had a similar problem we were having. He hired a plumber who said that this model and year of manufacture (year 2004) had a badly designed Gas Control Valve. He told our friend that it wasn't worth the cost to replace the Gas Control Valve. He sold my friend a new hot water heater to the tune of about $1200. This friend did not recommend the plumber he had hired.I contacted another friend who highly recommend Mack's Plumbing Service.I contacted Mack on August 3rd and he stoppped by later that day to check out the problem. From my description of the problem and Mack checking for other possible problems, he decided that a new Gas Control Valve was needed. I told him about my friend buying a new hot water heater. Mack said that the water heater seemed just fine and that a new Gas Control Valve should fix the problem. He did not do like many other tradesmen do, selling the customer more than what is really needed.Mack ordered the new gas control valve receiving it onTuesday, August 7th. Mack came out early on Wednesday morning, August 8th, and installed the new Gas Control Valve. The hot water heater has been operating normally, just like new. Again, I highly recommend this honest and knowledgeable owner of Mack's Plumbing Service.
