When our AC stopped working we called Calvin and Pierce. A repairman came out in a few days, said we needed a replacement water pump, and that he would be in touch. We heard nothing more for several weeks. When we called to follow up, we were told the pump was on back order. The repair guy did show up soon thereafter and install the pump. Immediately after doing so he informed us that the entire furnace was shot and needed to be replaced. Indeed, it work for a few hours and then died completely. C&P offered to replace the system for approximately $18,000, and after 3 weeks followed with a formal contract. By this time we had found a more responsive hvac contractor who bid $14,000 for comparable work and quickly finished the job. We now finally have AC & heating, as well as a bill for $600 from Calvin and Pierce, $500 of which is for a pump we didn't need and never used. Calvin & Pierce is not interested in taking back the pump.
Description of Work: Came out to repair geothermal heat pump. Performed expensive repair that didn't solve the problem.

It went very well. The estimate was based on a thorough review of my existing system, and the project was well explained to me. The install was completed in the time period specified. The pricing was very competitive - in fact, lower than many other bids. I have no complaints ad would recommend their services.

IN OCT/NOV 2008 Calvin D Pierce Heating and Cooling installed two York heat pump systems (2 ton each for heating and cooling) and fiberglass duct work (and branches) was installed. One unit takes care of the second floor, while the other takes care of the first floor and the basement. Each unit includes 10 KW of supplemental electric heat, a two-speed compressor, and a variable speed ECM blower. The unit for the lower floors also has a humidifier (Aprilaire 700) built into it. This was not possible for the unit servicing the second floor because it is located in the attic. The condensers were set on level concrete pads next to the garage. Each unit also includes an Aprilaire high efficiency air cleaner model 2200 in each return duct. The units are operated by 5 programmable electronic thermostats (one in basement, 2 on first floor and 2 on second floor). Compressors are warranted for ten years, the other equipment for only 5. Installation took about 10 days and went fairly well, but after 1 year, both heat pumps had to be completely removed and replaced. It was never really explained to me why (I wouldn't have understood the technical language anyway), but apparently York had a recall on those units. I am thrilled to have had central air in the house these past 4 summers and it works great. I wish that I could say the same about the heating. During the past few years I traveled a lot and when I returned to the house during cold winter months (central Pennsylvania gets into the single digits) it seems to take days for the interior temperature to increase from 55 to 70). I have called Calvin Pierce about this every year (in the winter) and his technicians respond immediately, but until this past winter (4 years after the installation) I never really felt convinced that the units and advanced circuitry for the heat pump was ever installed properly or that the technicians understood it. Actually, I have felt like a guinea pig with these new units since even some of the technicians have admitted that the unit was new when they initially installed it and it presented some new technology which they had not been familiar with. Hopefully, by now they have figured it out. I have Calvin's technicians service the units every fall and feel this is best since they are the ones most familiar with it, but I do get concerned when this service costs me between $120 to $190 after I believe that I have been more than patient with them during the first couple of years as they appeared to be learning about the system while I and my family were freezing our rears. Although, I feel that I paid a premium price to up-grade the HVAC of the house I believe that it was necessary. I simply wish that I only had to call Calvin's technicians for routine PM work and not to figure out why I am not getting the heat that I should and when I need it. I think that Calvin and his technicians are top-notch and have a great deal of technical knowledge, but I believe that I have paid them more then enough to expect heat when I really need it and not have to continue to be calling them the system doesn't appear to be working suitably enough to bring the interior of the house to a comfortable temp of only 70 degrees. Thank god for the new propane gas fireplace I had installed during the past 2 years!
Description of Work: Installed two York heat pump systems into a 30 year old home which had baseboard electric heat and no AC. House has approx. 2400 sq ft of living space. The until was installed in OCT of 2008, but only now seems to be doing what it was intended to do.

Installed a system that does not work, costs us more than oil ever did. Top of well lines literally freeze in winter. We expected expertise but it turns out that they undersized the system and did too much preliminary work to turn back after the drillers said the soil wasn't good for this. We believe they should have checked that first OR switched us over to a regular heat pump at that point. They made adjustments and a string of promises that the next thing would fix it, but it never got fixed. We've had electric bill from $300-$1000 per month - NOT what we were promised ($115/mo.) Now we know they were stringing us along, probably trying to run out the staute of limitations on our suing. They were unable to fix and are just leaving us stuck. We have a geothermal system that costs a fortune because it uses mostly electric heat. Terrible experience, poor service. STAY AWAY!

I wanted to write this review as I had a different experience than the rest of the reviewers. I manage a rental unit and we called Calvin Pierce to diagnose and repair a heating problem at our rental property. I originally called another contractor but he was unable to do the work for us so he recommended Calvin Pierce to me. Our tenant said there was water on the floor under the boiler unit and the heat was off. A technician was sent out Friday morning and found air in the pipes of the hot water radiator style baseboard heating system. He purged the and ldquo;extreme amountand rdquo; of air and left with the heat working. Two hours later he was called back as the heat was again not working. This time, in the middle of bleeding the lines for a second time, the circulating pump stopped and he replaced the pump, bled the lines again and left with the heat working. He was there for two hours with the tenant present but I was billed for four hours. The following day, Saturday, water again appeared on the floor under the boiler but the heat remained on. I called the emergency number and the tech told me we would wait and see as long as the heat is on. The water dried up later that day. On Monday, the tenant informed me there was water on the floor. I called again and Calvin himself said he would send someone right over. It was deemed the water was due to a sewer backup but was just horrible timing. I thanked the tech for coming to check but he was not needed. Tuesday morning, my tenant reported the heat was off again and the boiler was making a and ldquo;horrible noiseand rdquo; and the tenant turned it off. After I had the sewer backup fixed, I called Calvin and he sent the original tech back. After he did some initial looking and began filling the system again, I asked why he was using the circulator to fill the system and he promptly turned the boiler off. I had researched the issue and I asked him about the procedure and he said and ldquo; It didn't really matter.and rdquo; He seemed a bit flustered when I brought it up after he shut off the circulator. Other plumbers have told me you fill the system with the valve using city water and bled the lines with the circulator. I asked and ldquo; So why on your Friday visit, did it fail halfway during your second fill?and rdquo; I was told it was overheating. I think he broke it and wouldn't admit it. After he bled the system FOR THE 4th TIME, I had to lead the discussion about how to proceed. and ldquo;Should we check the lines for leaks?and rdquo; We did that. We found no evidence of leaks. and ldquo; What else could be causing this? Can you call someone else for help?and rdquo; He called another technician and Calvin himself and had a couple of possibilities. One possibility was a check valve was bad and allowing air into system. That was the easiest fix so we started there. We closed the valve and he said if the pressure holds and the heat works, that is the problem and needs to be replaced. We did that and that seemed to work. He said he would call the next day, Wednesday, to check and we could proceed. I received no call. I called Thursday morning and left a message to come and repair the valve. I received no call. I called again Friday afternoon to say please come and fix the valve as I need to have this repaired for the tenant before we have another problem. I received no call. A week later, I was not waiting any longer and I called another company who came and replaced the valve to finish the job Calvin's people chose not to do. I received a bill from Calvin on the following Monday for the job including the pump and extra hours. I called Calvin and he told me and ldquo;I never got those messages.and rdquo; I told him I have the cell phone records of the calls and that I left messages on a machine both days. He said again he never got them. I told him I thought this whole thing was wrong and he said he would talk to the technician. Four days later, he sends a letter saying the technician purged and filled the system multiple times and the water on the floor was due to the sewer backup, not the system, and that he didn't charge me for the hours his guys came back to attempt to fix the same problem using the same solutions. Before the sewer backup I explained the water was there under the boiler twice for which I have pictures so that can't be possible. He never mentioned the technician didn't fix the problem or even finish the job. Nor did he apologize for any inconvenience and try to rectify anything. Why would you conduct business like this? Why would I pay for someone to keep returning to fix the same problem the same way and not fix the root problem? I told Calvin this whole thing was total incompetence and it was unethical to charge for more hours than actually worked. I will be contacting local business advocates to address this situation as well. I also called the original recommending contractor and told him of the poor service and to not send any more people to Calvin D. Pierce.

They installed it over a two-day period, but we were not without heat overnight, since they put in the air handler first. A York specialist from Maryland also came by twice to help with fine-tuning the thermostat. This company had previously done all the repair and regular maintenance on our previous original Tempstar and Payne (indoor and outdoor, respectively) units, and they have always been pleasant to work with, and reasonable. Also, they provided the forms and receipts necessary for us to apply for a $400 West Penn Power rebate. It seems to be working well and we are pleased. Also, they cleaned up well in our newly refinished basement, so that you couldn't really tell any work had been done. NB - From all the research I did on the Web, it appears that the installer is the most important aspect of the job, more so than just the brand. Apparently, many companies use insufficiently trained installers. Not this one.
Description of Work: Our 13-year old outside heat pump compressor needed to have too much done to make it worth keeping. So in the interest of higher efficiency and since we had already remodeled much of our 23-year old house, we decided to replace the whole inside and outside HVAC system with a York Affinity 36,000 BTU system. They had to put in new lines from the air handler to the compressor (above our dropped ceiling panels), installed a new Aprillaire air cleaner with high efficiency filter and changed out the filter in our existing Aprillaire humidifier. They also installed a new "communicating" thermostat that we are still getting used to.

This is the company that installed my geothermal heat pump about 5 years ago. We use them for service every year. They always do good work. This year, the repairman failed to show up at the scheduled time, and we had to reschedule. This is the first time that ever happened. Other than that, no complaints.

An estimate was provided the day after our call. The work was done the next week, technician worked all day very diligently. He seemed quite knowledgeable and had recommended by our plumber.
Description of Work: They installed OPS hot water heater, because the furnace is in front of the hot water heater. The technician had to remove the pump motors from the furnace to take out the old hot water heater.

They were extremely personable and knowledgable. I followed their tech around and asked questions about every little thing he did so that I knew more the next time I needed work done, he was happy to answer my questions and did so in detail. We have an old system and he didn't try to sell us on upgrading or replacing anything that was unnecessary. I spoke with another company before them and they wanted to replace the entire HVAC unit. I highly recommend Calvin and the price was very fair
Description of Work: They replaced a part in our central air unit responsible for dispersing the refrigerant into an aerosol. They also did service maintenance on the heating and cooling unit, replaced the air filter, and added more refrigerant to the system. The service man was curtious, knowledgable, and pleasant to work with.

Pierce installed a geothermal system for us in 2009. He was the only provider in the area who would do geothermal with our existing high-velocity (Unico) system. He did a good job sizing the system, was straightforward, and his workers did a good job. The drilling and trenching contractors weren't so great, but Pierce's people are good and responsive.
