Reading the other reviews made me laugh because their experiences were IDENTICAL to mine. I hired Otis because I was extremely impressed when he came to view the project and give me an estimate. He really talks a good talk and for the most part, knows wood. His price was right. I decided to bite the bullet and give him a whirl knowing full well (from reviews) that he wouldnt finish the job on time. I was not in a rush and needed to save $. He was 3 weeks over schedule. He spent a lot of time telling me how to paint. He had lots of family emergencies. He did have great communication with me and responded in a timely manner. He never worked more than 3 hours at a clip. Never arrived before 10am. Told lots of TMI stories some of which made me feel like I had to shower afterward :-). The job was fair. It could have been better and could have been worse. What I suspect is that he did NOT use the high-grade varnish that he touts to use. I also suspect that he did NOT sand between coats. On my steps there was a place where the was a piece of tape and opposed to scraping it off (would have taken 30 seconds) he varnished over it. WTH??? IMHO this man has some mental illness... perhaps a personality disorder. If you are willing to really monitor what he does and can get over his extreme narcissism, he will do a fair job. I do suggest however that you spend a few extra bucks and get someone else.

When Mr. Statham quoted us the initial estimate he seemed to be knowledgeable with respect to flooring and the job that we wanted him to do. His initial contracted time of completion was 4 weeks. He was the only contractor that was able to start at the time we wanted someone to. We had multiple projects to work on once the floors were completed. It was clear after only a short while (1-2 weeks) that progress was slow at best. He worked from 10-4 on a good day and for the first three weeks was working at most 4 days a week. Due to a "family issue" three weeks in to the job he had to stop work all together and was unable to work again for close to a week. During this time, all of our floors were raw and we were living in one room that had no hardwood flooring. When he finally got back to work, he still worked his usual 10-4, 4 days a week schedule. Also, because of this delay, we had to take delivery of cabinets and pile them into our kitchen which had not been fully demoed and our garage which already had all of our stuff to move into the house. When it became apparent that we would be unable to complete all of our other remodel goals on time, we simply told him on a Monday "You will be done this week". He finally was able to get the job done 2 weeks behind schedule. Good stuff... Nice enough guy to us Offered (sometimes uninvited) advice about beginner home renovation techniques (painting, drywall repair, tile) Answered his phone when we called him and responded to texts fairly promptly Now the bad stuff... He complained about other contractors working there, explaining that they were all cutting corners places. Distracted us while we were working on other projects Left tools strewn all over the house daily and never put anything away Left polyurethane stains all over the walls which had to be painted over Got a little too personal about himself making me(the husband) a little uncomfortable at times. full discretion: I did offer him a beer after we both worked at the house all day (different projects obviously) early on into the job. That was my fault.... The aftermath of said offer turned into him drinking on the job at every opportunity, pestering me for beer, implying that I need to buy more for "us" . Additionally, when we moved out to another house for the last 10 or so days of the job, he consumed all the beer in my house along with a fifth of our rum and the remainder of a half gallon of vodka. We removed all our remaining liquor upon this discovery and also found liquor (not ours) stashed in the house. This was the point we told him he was to be done at the end of the week. Overall: nice guy, quality work, extremely un-professional,

My husband found this vendor from a Google search and met Otis Statham III (owner). He seemed a little rough around the edges but knowledgeable about flooring and construction in general. His quote was low, we were first time homebuyers and I was 5 months pregnant so we decided to award his company the business. The issues began almost from the start. We had a 203K construction mortgage and needed Otis to sign the bank paperwork so his quote would be built into the total mortgage of our home. He began spinning what I call conspiracy theories about how he WOULD NOT do business with a bank, he was doing business with us and wanted nothing to do with the bank. We were puzzled, because, well who do you care writes the check as long as you get paid. However we were able to get him to sign the paperwork and get started. His original estimate for the total time this job would take was 3 weeks. After the first couple days he stopped showing up, or would only work if he was the only contractor in the house. Then he started getting verbally agressive with our other contractors. Then he would talk trash about my husband and I to the other contractors (some of whom were family friends of ours). He then started calling us telling us our other contractors were not doing THEIR jobs, on occasion locked a Lowe's installment crew out of "his" house as he called it. We began tracking his hours as at this point he had totally blown through his 3 week time frame. I remember one phone call in particular when my husband was out of town, Otis was supposed to be working on the house (we had to adjust all of our other contractors schedules around his which was VERY inconveninet) and I drove by - he had already left. I called him to ask why he was not there and he began YELLING at me (keep in mind at the time I was 26 and 6 months pregnant) telling me he did not answer to women, he only answered to my husband, he did not work for me so he did not "owe" me any explanation as to when he works, and he would "finish the job when he felt like it". I could go into every detail about this horrible person, but I will end on the fact that he completed the work 8 weeks after he started, and also after threatening us to not finish the job until we started supplementing him with cash just to drive to the house to work becuase he said gas was too expensive. I cannot say enough about how terrible, horrible, awful it was working with him. I wish I had searched on Angie's list before we hired him, because I found another terrible review. Now at least I know this is just the way he does business. The most sad part is that the work he did was actually ok - OH WAIT I FORGOT ONE THING! After arguing with us on the phone for an incredibly long time (one argument in particular) we went to the house to see how his work was coming along. We had painted the entire house (previous owner was a smoker) and had just finished our master bedroom. We arrived to find wood stain splashed all over the freshly painted walls and trim. It was clear the paint was splashed on purpose, as we found it on every wall, in the closets, and on the ceiling. STAY AWAY FROM STATHAM FLOORING!!!!!! You have been warned!

We had 5 contractors, and he was the only one who caused problems but they were major problems.
Description of Work: This guy is the worst contractor I have ever dealt with. My wife and I purchased a house that needed a ton of work, much of which we did ourselves. Due to the large amount of work, we decided to have to floors contracted through our mortgage. Otis seemed like a reasonably nice individual who was very knowledgable on refinishing floors. He came back with a great price too. Soon after starting, he said he could have the job done in three weeks. This was great because we had planned on moving in by December 15 so we could have family come stay with us for the holidays. This gave him about 5 1/2 to 6 weeks to complete the job he said would take 3. The first week we had a couple set backs with removing the old flooring in the kitchen. Instead of starting on the bedrooms in the other side of the house. Otis got upset and decided not to work at all that week. This still gave him plenty of time to finish within timeframe. We had to gut our kitchen and had cabinet guys ready to install them for us and things got a bit stressful as they wanted to start their job, but Otis kept getting angry and saying that they couldn't work on the house until he was done. We began to notice that he would spend maybe about 2 hours a day at the house if lucky, and the amount of work completed in the next two weeks was minimal. At this point, it seemed harder and harder to hit our target date. When confronted about the lack of work and the minimal hours per day, Otis began yelling and cursing at my 6 month pregnant wife and told her that she can't tell him what to do and he isn't her boss. He then preceded to tell us that he would not be done with the floors until December 20th and had no intentions to work weekends to finish in the timeframe he gave us which was far before December 15th initially. When we told him that we needed it done by the 15th because we need to be out of our house he stated that, "it's not my problem that you guys didn't plan for a place to live". After rescheduling our cabinets three times, we decided they needed to be doen and Otis would have to work around them seeing ashe took way too long. Both contractors showed up at the house the same time and Otis locked the cabinet guys outside holding my house hostage. Meanwhile I am at work and receiving 7 calls in a row with a belligerent floor guy and cabinet guys asking me what I should do. Otis refused to let them in until I agreed to pay him an extra $600 in cash for the "extra work" involved in going around the cabinets. I agreed just to get him out of the way for the day and contacted my bank about the axtortion my floor guy was engaging in. We were told we could fire hime, but it would take about 3 weeks before I could get someone else in there that was approved by our bank to do the job. I called him back and informed him that there was no way I would EVER pay an extra $600. He then stated that he would not be coming in until I do. My response was "If you don't finish the job, I already got a quote from my cabinet guys, and they would be more than happy to". AT this point he agreed to finished by the end of the week. (December 24th... very convenient considering we need to stay off the floors for three full days after the job and that we had family from Europe coming to stay with us, rmember how pregnant my wife was??? yes this was stressful). Otis then began cursing and yelling when he found out I had another quote done to finish his job. He tried to play a lot of our contractors against us, not realizing that two were family friends who reported all the lovely stuff he had to say about us. He would also try telling us that everyone of them was trying to "screw us". This guy is insane and seems to have personality traits similar to lifelong alcoholics. I have worked as a chemical dependency counselor and knwo these signs well. Please do not hire this man.

Our contract stated that the work would be done on or about July 31, 2008. The work still wasn't completed after the 1st week of August and he took a week off for a vacation! This home is a rental we are trying to have ready when someone wants to sign a lease. The contractor worked very sporadic hours...would come for 2 hours and then not reappear for several days. We found that he was dumping the sandings from the floor along the edge of our yard/woods! We provided a dump cart for him to put them in after that. As the last days of July loomed, he worked a few long days...until 3 in the morning!?! The hardwood floors are done to my satisfactory. He started to strip the cork floors before leaving on his vacation and was doing such a sloppy job of it, we left him a note to call us to see if we could change the contract to say we would do the stripping. He never contacted us so we didn't want to break the contract. He finally called us well after we had left him the note (after we had left a voice mail for him), and said that would be ok for us to strip the cork floors. We insisted on a contract addendum lowering the cost. We waited another week after we left him a voice mail stating that the floors were stripped and ready to be finished. He suggested one coat of acrylic finish on the cork flooring and we agreed to it. It turns out the finish he used is one made by Bruce and is available at the local hardware store for 7.99. He came with 2 cans...had to run out and buy 2 more...so $32.00 of product, a few hours work and he made $384.00...not bad. My husband asked him to please slow down as he was spreading the finish on the floor...it was glugging out of the can and splashing on the knotty pine paneling I had spent an entire day on cleaning. He mentioned that maybe we shouldn't rent the house since we were so picky! The following day I went to the store and purchased 2 more cans to complete the job ourselves. This contractor cleaned his tools out along the edge of our driveway and killed a small bush with the chemicals, dripped water that had chemical in it the entire width of the driveway, leaving marks, dumped sandings from the hardwood on the edge of our yard/woods and worked very sporadically...until 3 in the morning! A job that should have taken 2 weeks took 4. A nice man but lacks professionalism. Will never use again, nor recommend.
